Does life inspire writing? #guestblogger #EMT #Romance @DonnaVStone

By D.V. Stone (Guest blogger)
Does life inspire writing? Absolutely! Hi, my name is Donna, and I write as D. V. Stone, and I’m so happy to be here today. Former parts of my life inspire the book Rock House Grill as an Emergency Medical Technician and small restaurant owner. And workplace romance? Yep, though mine was a bit different. I’m happily married for twenty-six years. So where was I twenty-seven years ago? In prison.

Ha, got ya!

I was an EMT in a women’s state prison. Since I was newly divorced, my co-workers conspired to fix me up with a New Boot. Yes, he was cute, but I was still recovering from a nasty divorce a year earlier. The last thing I was looking for was a romantic relationship. Well, those nurses and correction officers were sure this guy was the one for me. They insisted he wanted to go on a date with me, and to get them off my back, I finally agreed. Come to find out they were pestering him too. These would be matchmakers kept telling him, “Donna, the EMT (that’s how I was referred to by everyone, including inmates) wants to go out with you.”

Well, our first date was my annual squad dinner in March. Guess what? They were right. We became inseparable and engaged by May and the following May married.

Many years later, as a couple, we invested in a coffee shop called Heavenly Brew, which is in a scene from my book. We also bought a small restaurant.

EMT Shay McDowell in Rock House Grill has similar concerns. On a hot summer night, she’s called to the scene of an accident where Chef Aden House has wrecked his beautiful Camaro. I couldn’t name the car in the book, trademarks you know, but my sweet ride is Snowball, a dazzling white Camaro.

In another interesting coincidence of real-life mimicking fiction, during the time I was writing about Aden’s recovery from leg injuries, my dear Pete was too. Talk about hands-on research.

 Pete with his crutches

Rock House is the first book of the Impact Series. Each one will focus on a different couple, First Responder, and a music theme. All of these are important to me. I love romance and Happily Ever Afters. There will be threads like Heavenly Brew and familiar characters. Jazz House is next up, and after that, I think the third will be Blues House. I’m also considering branching off on the musical theme with Honky Tonk Hold-Out. Who knows? Next year I retire, and we’ll be traveling around the country in our 5th Wheel trailer.

Well, I hope you enjoy reading about me and Rock House Grill. I’d love to give away a token of appreciation to your readers. Three gift bags holding a notebook, a sweet treat, and a signed bookmark. Just leave a comment with your email if you want one!

One man’s choices—One woman’s impact

Aden House, successful but driven chef and TV personality, refuses to slow down. His life implodes one night, damaging him both physically and emotionally. He’s rescued by a woman he thinks of as his angel.

Shay McDowell has rebuilt her life after her divorce. She juggles volunteer EMT duties and her job, while dreaming of becoming a chef. She finds her way to Rock House Grill and back into the life of the man she helped save.

Can love be the ingredient needed to survive the many obstacles they face?

Excerpt

Easy, you’re going to be okay.” A soft voice eased through the chaos around him. The owner of the voice grabbed his arms and held them in a firm but gentle grip. “I’m right here with you. You are not alone.”

Can hardly m-move.” His voice slurred. “C-can’t see anything.”

You’ve been in an accident. I’m an EMT with the ambulance squad,” the velvety voice calmly explained. “You can’t see well because we’re under a tarp. Hold still, okay?”

“‘K.” A small light flickered at the edge of his vision. It shone into a bag next to him. Penlight.

You’re restrained to a board. It’s to keep your head from moving and causing more injury.” She continued to talk to him. The voice reached down somewhere inside him, calming and peaceful, so he focused on it. A glow from spotlights on the outside lit whatever covered them. The shadow gave the woman the appearance of a halo—like an angel.

About Me

Hi, my name is D. V. Stone. I am a multi-genre author of two independently published books. Felice, Shield-Mates of Dar is a fantasy romance. Agent Sam Carter and the Mystery at Branch Lake is a mid-grade paranormal. Recently, Rock House Grill was released by Wild Rose Press. I also host Welcome to the Campfire and A Peek Through the Window, both weekly blogs. Here’s a little more about me.

Born in Brooklyn, D.V. Stone has moved around a bit and even lived for a time on a dairy farm in Minnesota before moving back east. Throughout her wandering, she always considered herself a Jersey Girl. She met and married the love of her life, Pete—a lifelong Jersey Man, and moved this time to Sussex County. They live with Hali, a mixed breed from the local shelter and their cat Baby.

D.V.’s career path varied from working with the disabled to become a volunteer EMT, which in turn led to working in hospital emergency rooms and then in a women’s state prison. After a few years, she took a break from medicine and became the owner of Heavenly Brew, a specialty coffee shop in Sparta NJ, and a small restaurant in Lafayette. Life handed some setbacks, and she ended up back in the medical field, but this time in a veterinary emergency hospital.

During the poor economy, she was laid–off from a long-time position she cared about. Devastated, D.V. wondered what to do with her life. Finding comfort in her love of reading, she realized it was now time to follow her dream of writing. It’s been a long road but worth every minute of it. Now a published author, she also works in a people medical office again.

Thank you for taking the time to read about me. Each time you open the pages to one of my books, I hope you’ll be swept away by the story and find encouragement in your own life, never to give up on hope.”

Knives instead of needlepoint.... #HistoricalRomance #Giveaway #Madness

Ereader Banner

Blurb

Daughter of an infamous murderer, Ivy Wollard now wields knives instead of needlepoint to survive in a society where no one wants her. When the Marquess of Blackbourne comes along and ruins her chance at a better life, she decides she’d rather have her toes eaten by eels than agree to his proposed scheme. There’s no way her surrender has anything to do with the mesmerizing angle of his jawline or the wicked twinkle in his eyes.

But Asher Blackbourne has a secret. He knows it’s just a matter of time until he goes mad and loses his illustrious title, so when Ivy falls into his path, he realizes he could use her to keep his house of cards from falling down. If every illicit touch between them doesn’t drive him mad first, that is.

Yet Ivy cannot escape her grisly legacy and the dark desires of her father’s admirers. What if violence runs through her veins, and no one who gets close is safe? Mayhem will descend as this rake finally falls for the enigmatic woman who might be just his brand of poison…Er, cure, of course.

Excerpt

That was my favorite pen,” Blackbourne remarked in a low tone, looking at the broken quill and ink flooding the polished wood surface of his desk and nearby papers. He rose suddenly from his chair, forcing Ivy to back away a step until her derriere came up against the edge of the desk.

She gasped as his full height loomed over her. Her hands grabbed the edge of the desk as his legs pressed into her skirts.

Perhaps she had gone a bit too far.

I liked that pen,” he purred, his hand coming up to stroke her face.

She gulped. “I like my privacy.”

Are you going to replace my pen?”

Are you going to un-read my letters?” she replied, trying not to stare at the way his lips moved as he spoke in the smoky voice that strummed along her nerves like a cello’s bow.

He let out a bark of laughter. “Perhaps it’s too late to stop for either one of us,” he said, and Ivy knew he spoke of things other than pen and paper.

It’s been too late for a long time,” she breathed, the fabric of her dress chafing the puckered tips of her breasts as his chest came up against hers.

His eyes flashed as he pressed her further backwards, hands positioned flat on the desk on either side of where he had her trapped. “I’m going to ruin your dress now.”

Ivy sucked in a breath as he lifted her onto the desk, ink smearing over her skirts and the palms of her hands. She didn’t mind that outcome one bit…

MFRW Book Hooks: Rough Weather -- #MFRWHooks #MFRWAuthor #ParanormalRomance

Rough Weather cover

Welcome to this week’s Book Hooks blog hop. My hook today is from my paranormal romance Rough Weather. I love this book, partly because it’s set in Martha’s Vineyard – one of my favorite places in the world.

Enjoy!

Destiny hides in the tempest’s heart

Ondine has always felt at home in the sea. Orphaned at birth and raised by her grandmother on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, she has never really questioned her extraordinary affinity for the watery world. She concentrates on her work as a marine biologist, spends her weekends relaxing among the waves and worries about human threats to her beloved ocean environment. Fears of a deadly pregnancy like her mother’s make her cautious about sex.

When she encounters an attractive but arrogant engineer on her private beach, surveying the site for a prospective off-shore wind farm, anger is her first reaction. A casual touch, however, transforms that emotion to incomprehensible, irresistible, terrifying lust.

Ebony-skinned Marut has his own talents—aside from his uncanny ability to swamp Ondine with desire. He can control the winds and summon storms. He informs Ondine that they share a supernatural heritage and claims she is his destined mate. She responds with scepticism and tries to resist the charismatic Haitian, but ultimately her scientist’s training won’t permit her to deny the evidence of her senses—and her heart. As a brutal northeaster batters the island and Marut’s life hangs in the balance, Ondine learns that true power lies in surrender to her elemental nature.

The Hook

A high-pitched whine drew her attention to the tumbled boulders that marked the eastern extent of the beach. Atop the pile of rock crouched a dark-skinned man, boring into the surface with some kind of drill.

Hey! What are you doing?” Ondine strode towards the interloper, still holding her discarded clothing. “That noise—you’ll disturb the fish!” She halted on the sand below his perch, one hand shielding her eyes from the glare. “Stop that this instant!”

The stranger raised his head and fixed her with eyes like polished jet, set in a proud face almost as black. A cloud of wiry hair haloed his skull. He flipped a switch and the irritating noise died. His full lips parted in a confident smile, revealing even, pearly teeth. He rose to his full height—at least six feet, she guessed, though her position made him look even taller—and gazed down at her.

Self-consciousness blasted through her as she suddenly remembered she was naked. Hot blood raced to her face while her nipples tightened into ruddy peaks, and an echo of her recent climax shimmered in her still-damp pussy.

The stranger looked distinctly amused, as though he sensed the physical effects his presence triggered. There was something else, too, an unnerving sense of familiarity, although Ondine was certain she’d never met this man before.

She squared her shoulders, ignoring her embarrassment as best she could. She wasn’t ashamed of her body—far from it. “You can’t drill here. Tide pool habitats are very sensitive. The vibrations could kill crustacean larvae, for a start, and confuse organisms that rely on echolocation…”

The black man’s grin grew broader. He scanned her nude figure with deliberate and obvious interest before he answered. Ondine’s nipples ached under his scrutiny, even as her blood boiled at his brazen attitude.

I have a permit.” His voice had an unexpected softness, with a faint hint of the Caribbean. He rifled in the pocket of his tight jeans and pulled out a sheet of paper, which he offered her. “Mass DEP. Go ahead and check. I think you’ll find it’s all in order.”

The sun beat down, hotter than ever. Sweat gathered under her arms and at the back of her neck. Ignoring the proffered permit, she planted her fists on her hips and summoned every ounce of authority she could muster.

This beach is private, reserved for Katama residents. What’s your business here?”

Stuffing the permit back into his pants, he sank into a crouch to pick up a piece of equipment that he’d propped against a rock, next to a two-meter steel pole. His thigh muscles flexed against taut denim as he rose. His white T-shirt emphasised his ebony skin, sculpted pectorals and massive biceps—her mouth felt dry and her pussy, wet. “I’m installing a temporary meteo-hydrographic monitoring station.” The device bristled with lenses, buttons and dials, the pinwheel of an anemometer, and the tongue-like extrusion of a rain gauge. “Come on up. Take a look.”

Just a minute.” She stepped into her shorts, then pulled her shirt over her head, trying to ignore the sensation of fleece brushing across her naked breasts. In her bare feet, she clambered up over the knobby, rust-coloured stone until she stood beside him. He towered over her. She caught a whiff of sandalwood and coconut oil and was washed by sudden desire.

He pointed to a white plastic rectangle. “This is the hygrometer, the humidity sensor.”

Yes, yes, I understand. You’ve got a laser ceilometer for cloud height, I see, and an infrared camera for thermal imaging…”

What…?”

She found his surprise gratifying, as he realised she wasn’t just a naked, blonde beach bunny.

Review Tuesday: Lucky You by Carl Hiaasen - #ReviewTuesday #Humor #Satire #Florida

Lucky You - original cover

Lucky You by Carl Hiaasen
Pan Books, 1991

Once a week, veterinary technician Jo Layne Lucks stops at the Grab ‘N Go convenience store in tiny Grange, Florida to purchase a lottery ticket. Her numbers never change; each represents one of the five failed relationships in her life. She figures she should get something from those losers. When she actually hits the twenty eight million dollar jackpot, though, she discovers that her good luck comes at a high price.

Two white supremacists from down-state played the same numbers, so the prize will be split. However, Bode and Chub aren’t satisfied with just fourteen million. They’re determined to have the whole pot, especially when they learn that the owner of the other ticket is a Black woman. Bode and his henchman plan to use the lottery proceeds to finance the White Clarion Aryans, the militia Bode has founded to combat the imminent invasion of Nato troops from the Bahamas. They have it on good authority that the blue UN helicopters will land any day, to hand America over to the dark-skinned foreigners who’ve overrun the country. Hence, they feel more than justified showing up at Jo Layne’s house, giving her a savage beating, and stealing her lottery stub. They get the ticket, though neither escapes unscathed from Jo Layne’s ferocious efforts at self-defense.

Tom Krone considers himself a serious journalist. He’s sick of writing trivial human interest stories for the local paper that employs him. When his editor sends him to Grange to interview the young woman who has just won fourteen million dollars, that’s the last straw. He quits his job, but somehow ends up in Grange anyway, fascinated by the tough, principled and attractive Jo Layne. Together, they track down the racist bullies who assaulted her. The wild, dangerous chase gives them a chance to get to know and trust one another – but there’s a very real chance that when they finally corner the vicious, well-armed villains, their luck will run out.

Carl Hiaasen’s Florida-based novels have been called “crime fiction”, but I see them more as social satire. However you label them, his books offer outrageous hilarity layered over a strong moral compass. Lucky You is fantastically entertaining, with tight plotting, snappy dialogue and lots of quirky, vividly drawn characters. Aside from Jo Layne, Tom, and the villains, Lucky You introduces us to Amber, the clever, sexy Hooters waitress who so entrances Chub that he has her kidnapped; Katie the judge’s wife, a devout Catholic who has a passionate fling with Tom then feels morally obligated to share every detail with her husband – leading the jealous judge to arrange Tom’s murder; narcissistic actress Mary Andrea, Tom’s estranged wife, who’s hiding out in Montana to prevent Tom’s lawyer from serving her divorce papers, because nobody in her family has ever gotten divorced; Shiner, the none-too-bright convenience store clerk who’s sucked in to Bode’s and Chub’s nefarious plot, but saved by Amber; a gaggle of Grange townsfolk, who make their living by manufacturing religious manifestations like a crying Madonna and fake stigmata; and Moffitt, the savvy “Man in Black” federal agent who’s futilely in love with Jo Layne.

Hiassen shows insight into and sympathy for all of his characters, even the bad guys. That’s one reason why this is such a feel-good novel. You can almost see the author shaking his head at Bode’s and Chub’s vile antics. They ultimately get what they deserve, a fate one wouldn’t wish upon anyone. Hiassen’s universe is simultaneously random and orderly. Characters reap what they sow.

Female characters dominate the narrative, Jo Layne and Amber in particular. They both understand the power of feminine allure, but ultimately prevail more through brains and bravery than beauty. Though Tom is officially the hero, he’s mostly dragged along for the ride, compelled by his feelings for the impetuous veterinary technician. Many of the other male characters (for instance, Tom’s editor Sinclair and Domenick the religious scam artist) end up seeming slightly ridiculous. Still, Hiaasen is never mean or petty. In his fictional Florida, everyone has his schtick, and that’s okay, as long as nobody gets hurt.

I should mention that Florida itself is a sort of character in this novel. I don’t know the state well at all, but Hiaasen portrays the place as a natural wonder at great risk from its inhabitants. A good bit of the action takes place on the wild, deserted islands in Florida Bay – still enough of a wilderness (at least when this book was published, in 1991 originally) that a man stranded on one is more or less condemned to death.

Despite the fact that Lucky You was published almost three decades ago, it doesn’t feel at all dated. Alas, the pernicious sentiments and beliefs displayed by Bode and Chub are more prevalent now than ever. Fortunately, Hiaasen’s not interested in penning a political rant. He allows readers to draw their own conclusions.

If you’re looking for some laughs to take your mind off the Covid-19 situation, get yourself a copy of this book – and count yourself lucky.

DARLA

The last everloving fucking thing I expected to see as I drove down I-76 toward my little hometown of Peters, Ohio was a buck-naked man wearing a spiked collar and a guitar.

I mean, only wearing a collar and a guitar. The man was barefoot, for goodness sake. On the highway. In May, in Oh-fucking-hi-o, where winter isn’t a season but a state of mind.

How could I not stop and offer him a ride? Seriously? Where was he hiding a weapon? Okay, Okay, maybe up there, but think about it for a minute. He’d have to twist quite a bit to access anything he hid up his puckered—well, there!

And he wasn’t a bit hard on the eyes, either. Kind of a Brad Pitt circa 1991 look, before he married Miss Toothpick and then left her for that wan Elvira and her weak Michelle Duggar imitation.

Anyhow...back to the naked hitchhiker. My 1986 Toyota Tercel wasn’t anything special but it, um, had a floor. And a windshield. And a place for Mr. Naked to rest his weary nuts. The vinyl might be cracked and faded and it wasn’t no Giving Tree from that Shel Silverstein book, but at least the man could give his balls a rest. Those muscles looked like they could sure use some eyes hungrily ogling them, too, for they screamed for loving attention. If I couldn’t touch, I could at least be the one to stare, right? I’m a giver like that.

Always thinking about others.

Sci-fi romance, for peanuts! #EdHoornaert #SciFi #Romance #BigSale

If you hang around my blog at all, you’ll know that I really like the science fiction romance books written by Ed Hoornaert – aka Mr. Valentine. Over the past couple of years, I’ve reviewed quite a few:

Ed’s books tend to feature feisty, sometimes snarky, heroines; lots of action; exotic locales; exotic pets; and romance that has plenty of heat despite not being graphic or explicit.

Anyway, I just learned that he has opened his own store to sell his stuff, in order to keep more of the profits from his own creativity. For a limited time he is offering a 75% discount on his entire back list. Given that even at full price his books aren’t expensive, the discount brings the price down to next to nothing.

The bookstore is here: https://payhip.com/EdwardHoornaert

Enter coupon code RZZAGGCKBX when buying any of his books. That’s right any book. You’ll get an immediate 75% off.

I don’t know when this expires... so take advantage while you can!

Falling in love can be deadly.... #FionaMcGier #Spies #EroticRomance #OnSale

Blurb

Sheena has spent twelve years saving the world, one assignment at a time. She enjoys the work, but is getting bored. She tries her usual cure; a new man. What starts out as a hot affair with a famous Native American action movie star becomes serious – she develops feelings. And in her world, even having feelings is dangerous. Indulging them by falling in love can be deadly – for both of them.

Excerpt

Set-up

This is the first time they have sex. Sheena has told him her name is Lenora, and invited him to join her in an agency-owned apartment, explaining to him that once he leaves, he won't be able to return. Reluctantly, he agrees.

"When I get called back to work, I have to go. Until then, I belong to you."

Agreed. Now can we get to the bedroom? Or do I have to take you here?"

"Here, in there, in the bathtub, and anywhere else we can think of. There are a lot of hours in a day." It was increasingly difficult to talk, with his hands setting her skin on fire all over her body.

"What do I get out of my concession?" They got up off of the couch.

She took his hand to lead him into the bedroom, giving him an arch look backwards over her shoulder. "I not only know the entire Kama Sutra, but I wrote a couple more chapters for it, with positions those ancient Indian guys never even thought of!"

He let out a low groan as she led him into the bedroom, and he took in the king-sized bed with the mirrors all around it. "Then if we only have a few days, we'd better get going right now!" He threw his jacket on the floor, then sat on the bed. Pulling her close, he nibbled at her lips, while she stood in front of him and quivered. His hands started at her thighs, then massaged their way up to the top of the zipper for her dress. He pulled the zipper down, then slowly slid the dress off of her shoulders, down her body, to reveal the matching lace bra, garters and thong that she wore underneath it.
"Wait." He was panting, leaning his head against her chest, trying to concentrate enough to make coherent words come out. "Birth control. I have condoms with me. Do we need them?"

Pleased at his thoughtfulness, she smiled, looking him in the eye when he gazed up at her. "No, we don't. I'm on the pill, and it's a special, proto-type thing, that also has disease-fighting properties. All of my recent STD tests were negative, so as long as you are okay with that, it’s enough for me."

"Good!" He groaned as he lay back on the bed, pulling her on top of him again, while he fumbled at the clasp for her bra.

When he had it undone, she sat up, straddling him as he pulled her bra off. She ground herself on his erection, ignoring the almost painful feeling of the zipper cutting into her, as she pulled off his shirt, then leaned over to lick and suck at his nipples.

His hands were busy on her body, then he pushed her over, to hold her hands over her head, as he bent his head down to allow his tongue to explore each breast. "I get the feeling you are used to being in control, Lenora," he said in a low voice. "But so am I. So what do we do? Who's in charge now?" He was making her moan and squirm, his mouth fastened on one nipple. He alternately licked, suckled, and bit at her nipple, while twisting the other one gently, then with more force, varying the pressure on both. He had let go of her hands to concentrate on her breasts.
She got busy with those hands. She slid them into his pants, and kneaded his butt cheeks. So hard, so firm, and so strong! Then she pulled her hands out and pushed at him, to get him to lift his hips enough for her to work at the zipper that had been digging into her. Once she had it undone, she slid his pants down and was finally able to grasp his swollen cock. The size of it increased her feeling of anticipation, while the time and attention he was giving to foreplay promised a sensitive and attentive lover--something she had not had in a very long time.

He hesitated now, looking deeply into her eyes. "Last one naked has to be on the bottom?"

With a smile she pushed him off of her, and quickly tore off her thong, leaving the garter belt and nylons still on. His pants tossed off into the corner, he reached for her again, the look in his eyes almost feral as he crawled towards her, then positioned himself between her legs, and began to rub himself against her. Feeling her slick and ready for him, he firmly grabbed both of her hips, and steadily pushed his way into her hot core. She came almost immediately.

* * * *

Her quick response seemed to surprise him, the spasms of her inner muscles causing him to almost lose his tenuous control over his own instincts. He pulled back and pounded himself into her over and over, drawing himself almost all of the way out then slamming back into her, and each time he filled her again, he felt her quiver into another orgasm. He grunted with his efforts, dug his fingers into her butt cheeks, and gritted his teeth, to try to regain control over himself, but the battle was already lost. He threw his head back and howled, as his orgasm made him spasm repeatedly inside of her, the hot come forcing itself higher and higher into her. Yet still he shook and trembled, in tune with her multiple orgasms.

* * * *

She rode his orgasm, spiraling into yet more and more for herself, screaming out her pleasure. Finally he collapsed onto her, and she lay almost unconscious. She was aware that she could barely breathe, but was not able to complain about it, since she was still having smaller orgasm-spasms that made her whimper and clench herself around his still-formidable, semi-erect manhood.

"Am I crushing you?" He spoke quietly when her muscles finally stopped quivering and squeezing him, and she lay still.

"Yes, but I don't care."Her hands were busy rubbing his back, massaging the length of him, from his perfectly-shaped butt cheeks, up to his wide shoulders, then back down again. She felt as if she would never be able to get enough of feeling his skin under her hands, or of his body inside of her, and she was loathe to let go of him with any part of herself.

"Turn on your side, honey, and I will too. That way I can stay inside of you, but you will be able to breathe easier."

They both turned, and he moved her top leg onto his hip, so that he maintained the depth of penetration that kept his balls snug against her butt.

She was surprised that he started to push back and forth, and wiggle himself around in her. "What? Are you already up for more?"

He smiled at her, a cross between a wicked leer, and a smoldering look of passion, his dark eyes black with emotion. "I told you it had been a long time for me. I didn't have any plans to end my voluntary abstinence until I saw you. Then I realized just how long it had been, and the urge to take you was overwhelming. We're both lucky that I was able to control myself until we got up here. The paparazzi would have had a field day!"
