Excerpt
A tall, slender human male clone appearing to be about 25 years of age stepped out from behind a bale of hay. He was a striking-looking fellow with an alabaster complexion and angular features. His thick, blue-black bangs fell over wide, onyx eyes.
“Crap, he’s a pleasure clone,” Iker muttered. “I was hopin’ for someone with useful skills who could hold their own in a fight.”
“We don’t know what skills he has,” Peregrine whispered. “We should give him a chance. Anyway, it wouldn’t be right to leave him here unprotected.”
“You’re Hangiri riggers,” the young man noted. “I’m glad to see you. I’m Ohannes Herod Hertz. I was the stable boy here at Blackwood Ranch.”
“Stable boy?” Iker inquired, eyeing Ohannes suspiciously. “Where are the animals?”
“I set them free. The Pingucury treat animals with more respect than humans.”
“Where’s your boss?” Peregrine inquired.
“Gone. All of them gone. Those that the military didn’t take ran. It isn’t safe here in the loft. You can follow me to the bunker. We can stay there till tomorrow night, then, if it’s safe, we should make our way to the monastery.”
The roughnecks followed the willowy stable hand to a well-disguised trap door hidden behind several large bales of hay. They descended a ladder and walked through a long metal tunnel to a heavy metallic door. Ohannes punched in a code and the men followed him to an area that looked more like a luxury suite than an emergency hideaway.
“A dozen people could survive comfortably for a year in this place,” Ohannes stated as Iker poured the roughnecks and himself a glass of Horika. “As you can see, there is plenty of food and drink, and I am here to assist you should you require anything.”
