Markus and Sarah’s lives couldn’t be more different…
After three years away as a goalkeeper for an English soccer club, Markus DeLeon is happy to be back in Melbourne, back with his family and friends, including Sarah. He has known her since childhood, and has often provided her with a safe place from the teasing of other children and the troubles of a broken home. Yet, events after attending their friends' wedding set off a shift in their relationship and questions, which neither Markus nor Sarah know how to approach.
Sarah Winter caught her boyfriend cheating on her, and not for the first time Markus offers her a much-needed shoulder to cry on. This time, however, an attraction between them intensifies, ending in a passionate afternoon, and Markus doesn’t know how to handle this new side of their friendship and flees to the coast. Sarah, unsure as well about the recent events, is surprised by his sudden departure, but is soon sidetracked by misunderstandings and a family emergency.
But sometimes risking what you have means you might lose everything…

Excerpt
Letting out a long sigh, she leaned back into the couch. “I’m truly sorry about yesterday, Marky. I have no idea what came over me.”
“Physical attraction,” he replied with a shrug.
Angry tears burnt the back of her eyes as she moved away from him, frustrated that her apology fell on deaf ears for him. How on earth could he be so blasé about the whole situation when everything inside her screamed of embarrassment and pain. “For crying out loud, for once will you take me seriously?”
“I do, baby.”
Their conversation didn’t go anywhere and her frustration grew even more. As she studied his face for any sign of his emotions, she repeated her apologies, despite him still being nonchalant about it.
“Saz. Let it go. The last twenty-four hours were intense. The thing with Timmy, coping through a wedding not only with a headache but also with the disappointment. Shit happens.”
She rubbed her forehead with her fingers, but stayed silent, unsure how to respond to that. Was he referring to her inappropriate and awkward coming on to him as shit? Her emotions were all over the place and she had difficulties to put them back into order, especially her feelings towards Markus. In the end, she simply placed a quick kiss on his cheek and explained, “I’m heading back to bed to get some more sleep. I’ll catch up with you during the week.”
She heard some mumbling along the lines of Will you be all right? but chose not to answer and headed straight to her room, throwing herself onto the bed.
They’d known each other for such a long time, the idea of him being more than a friend should have given her a shudder instead of tingles.
“Aww, baby.”
Sarah shot around, her heart pounding hard in her chest. Markus had clearly followed her to her bedroom, and hearing his low voice, she rolled over on the bed and buried her face into the pillow. “What?”
Trying to remove her pillow, he said, “You’re really in a bit of a mess here.”
“Probably just the hangover.” A thousand thoughts went through her head and one of them was that she didn’t want to talk to him. She didn’t want to look into his eyes. Annoyingly, though, she still wanted to kiss him again. “Go away. I need more sleep.”
Markus pulled on her arm until she sat next to him. She didn’t fight him as he shifted her until she sat across his lap, leaning against his strong chest. His muscular arms surrounded her and gave her a small measure of comfort. Even more so when he lifted her head and wiped away her tears with his thumb. The powerful waves of emotion dissipated as she met his gaze. His bemused eyes, matched with his mischievous grin, made her melt into a puddle. In that state of mind, she leaned in, softly touching his lips with hers. He didn’t move, and she leaned back to study him. Gazing into each other’s eyes, Markus reached up, his mouth curved, and gently brushed a curl away from her face. Feeling a surge of desire mixed with uncertainty, Sarah started to move off his lap, but he grabbed her by the waist and pulled her closer again.
“Marky—”
He cupped her chin, hesitated, and then lowered his head, his lips hovering inches from hers. When he finally kissed her, the kiss was soft and subtle, but her whole body was on alert. Her heart pounded in her chest and her skin burnt from his touch.
“Marky, honey, if you tease me I—”
She didn’t get to complete the sentence, though, as he silenced her with another kiss. “No more talking,” he said gruffly, while he briefly pulled his mouth away from hers.
