Charity Sunday for Oz - #Bushfires #CharitySunday #PNR

Charity Sunday Banner

Welcome to the first Charity Sunday of 2020.

My post today supports the victims of the horrific fires that have been ravaging Australia. While the world watches in horror, Australia burns. I have many author colleagues from “Oz” and this post is particularly in solidarity with them.

There are so many charities supposedly working to alleviate the suffering of the people and the animals affected by the fires that is it quite difficult to choose. I’ve decided to be conservative and dedicate this post to the disaster relief campaign of the Australian Red Cross. I love animals and I’m tempted to donate to help the unique and severely threatened fauna of Australia, but this month, I’m focusing on the human cost. (Maybe I’ll donate to an animal-related cause next month.)

Anyway, I will donate $2 to the Australian Red Cross for each comment I receive on this post.

Meanwhile, I don’t have any books or stories that feature bush fires, but here’s a bit from my MM paranormal romance Necessary Madness involving paranormal visions of catastrophic fire.

Blurb

Nineteen year old Kyle sees visions of disasters, visions that tear his world apart. Everyone assumes that he is schizophrenic, but Rob, the cop who picks him up off the street, knows better. Rob's own experience has taught him that psychic powers are real, and potentially devastating.

Since his telepathic sister's brutal murder, Rob wants nothing to do with "gifted" individuals like Kyle. Yet he can't deny his attraction to the beautiful, tortured young man – an attraction that appears to be mutual. When a brilliant, sadistic practitioner of the black arts lures Kyle into his clutches, Rob faces the possibility that once again he may lose the person he loves most to the forces of darkness.

First came the flames. Then, the screams. Each cry was distinct to Kyle’s ears—the men’s hoarse yells, the women’s shrieks, the inarticulate wails from the infants. He couldn’t see them, not yet. Sooty smoke billowed up, hiding the plummeting bodies, making his eyes sting. Orange tongues of fire pierced the black cloud. The cries grew louder as the heat intensified.

He took a big swig of cheap vodka. The bottle was already half empty. His head spun and he knew he couldn’t stand, but the awful screams still rang in his mind.

Please, he thought. No more. I can’t take any more. Let me pass out soon. He drank again, his gut churning as the raw liquid splashed into his empty stomach.

He tried to focus on the present—the rough stone pressing against his back, the chill wind biting through his ragged jacket, the faint smell of urine that filled the passageway under the highway. Useless. The sensations of the real world seemed thin and frail, powerless to overcome the horrible scenes in his head.

Every time, it got worse. It took more alcohol to remove him to that state of blissful oblivion. I’m adapting, just like any drunk. Before long, I’ll need a whole bottle to drown out the visions. Eventually, it will kill me. The thought was a relief.

The spells came more frequently these days, and not just during his waking hours. Nightmares stalked him, full of bloody flesh and torn limbs, searing fire or icy floods. He’d claw his way back to consciousness, howling like an animal, trying to escape. He’d been kicked out of every shelter in the city. He upset the other residents too much.

He could always go back to the hospital. Thorazine didn’t completely smother the visions, but it deadened the emotional impact. He could sit for hours, watching disasters play themselves out on the screen of his mind, and not care.

It worked for a while, but then he always ended up signing himself out again. As painful as consciousness was, it was better than the half-life of being drugged. At least, that was what he told himself, on the good days when his curse was in remission. The staff looked relieved when he left. Even the professionals had trouble dealing with his ‘hallucinations’.

Hey, gimme a drink, will ya?” A voice cut through the screams echoing in his head. The grizzled man lying next to him on the sidewalk smelt like long-unwashed socks. “Come on, please? Us bums got to stick together.”

Kyle handed him the bottle. His hand shook. “Sure, help yourself.”

The old timer took a deep swallow, then grinned at him. “Thanks, kid.”

The flames flared up, hiding the man’s pock-marked face and gap-toothed smile. A woman’s cry rang out, full of terror. “No, please, no more…” Kyle muttered, closing his eyes. The hungry fire continued to dance behind his eyelids, mocking his attempt at escape. He groped for the bottle.

Brilliant white light flooded his vision, momentarily chasing the inner fire away. “Okay, boys, time to get up.” The masculine voice held a natural authority—strength without cruelty. “Off to the shelter with you. You know you can’t stay here, getting drunk and blocking pedestrians.” A firm hand grabbed his arm and tried to haul him to a standing position. “Come on. We’ve got a wagon right here. Wouldn’t you rather be in a nice warm bed than a stinking underpass?”

Kyle opened his eyes, blinking in the glare of the cop’s flashlight. “I…no, please…I can’t…” A scream of agony assaulted his inner ears. He doubled over, answering the pain tearing through his stomach. Only the cop’s grip kept him from collapsing onto the damp cement. Another pang knifed through his abdomen. The fire roared inside him.

Are you sick?” Barely conscious, Kyle had a confused impression of the other man’s face—square jaw, sandy hair, warm blue eyes.

My stomach… The fire…”

What fire?”

Kyle couldn’t think, couldn’t focus. The policeman searched his face, trying to understand.

They’re dying,” he moaned. Maybe he was dying himself. He retched and tasted blood. He was sinking into a rosy, fire-lit haze.

Who? Who’s dying?” The policeman gripped his shoulders, shaking him, trying to bring him back. “What’s going on, boy?”

The address appeared out of nowhere, written in chalk on a wall of black stone. “Gardner Street,” Kyle whispered, slipping away. “29 Gardner Street.”

The last thing he saw was the cop’s handsome face, the mingled suspicion and concern. The last thing he felt was the man’s heartbeat as he clutched Kyle’s body to his chest.

Don’t forget to leave a comment. Every one means a donation to the Australian Red Cross. And I hope you’ll visit the other blogs participating in today’s hop.

Thank you!

Her healing touch could start a fire - @MeloraJohnson #paranormalromance #urbanfantasy #TirgearrPublishing

Do you love action, romance, and fantasy all rolled into one? Love strong heroines? Then check out Earthbound!

Earthbound is a paranormal romance filled with angels and demons struggling to find their way here on Earth.

Blurb

Her healing touch could start a fire.

Ally Reynolds is a veterinarian specializing in raptor rehabilitation in New Hampshire. Other than one horrific incident in her childhood and a little extra “spark” for healing in her hands, both of which she has kept secret from even her best friend, her life has been singularly boring. It has also been extremely lonely. Ally longs for someone to share her life with, but how can she trust anyone with her secret?

Matthew Blake, an ornithologist at Cornell University, calls Ally, asking for her help with an injured raptor. Matthew grew up in New Zealand and has lived around the world. He has read about Ally’s high success rates in raptor rehabilitation and suspects there is more to it than is generally known.

Matthew has some secrets of his own; he is a demon hunter. He suspects Ally’s healing powers could benefit him. He wants her to join him and thinks they’d make a great team.

Can Ally trust him or is he just using her? Matthew definitely has more secrets, and some of them are about Ally.

Excerpt

Doctor Reynolds,” a male voice called out from across the room, pulling me back to the present. It sounded somewhat familiar.

I looked up, shielding my eyes from the afternoon sun shining in the front window as a male figure strode toward me, blond hair haloed by the light. He stopped in front of me.

Startled, I rose to my feet and looked into a chiseled face, his eyes the indeterminate blue green of sea glass like I’d collected along the shoreline once as a teenager. His dark golden blond hair was short and spiky, his lopsided grin pure perfection. He was gorgeous.

In my experience, gorgeous men were not to be trusted. Well, no men really were. Oh, all right, no one was, period.
Doctor Allyson Reynolds? I’m Doctor Matthew Scott Blake. I’m honored to have you join us. I’ve read your articles in the Raptor Rehab Newsletter.”

He held out a hand, but when I put out mine to shake it, he simply captured mine in his and placed his other hand over it. His eyes flashed green with golden flecks in the sunlight.

I’m glad to be here,” I said, not at all sure I was anymore, as my pulse sped up. “Please, call me Ally.”

All right, Ally it is.”

I want to climb him like a tree. I swallowed, aghast at my own thoughts. I’d only known him a few minutes.

His hands were so warm. My mother’s voice played in my head, Gorgeous men are dangerous, arrogant, and being involved with them will lead to no good. I frowned.

It’s so good to see you…” he said. At my expression, he faltered and cleared his throat. The wattage of his smile dimmed significantly. “I mean, to meet you. I’ve been following your work since I arrived in the States, in the newsletter.”

He turned, drawing my hand through his arm. “Please, let me show you around the facilities here.”

Uh, thank you,” I murmured, wondering how to tactfully withdraw my arm. My attraction to him was overwhelming. At the same time, his overly familiar attitude seemed a little odd.

A tall woman, her long, brown hair in a ponytail, appeared at the doorway through which Matt had arrived. She positively glowered at my arm through Matthew’s. She wore work boots, khaki shorts, and a sand colored polo shirt with the university logo, so I assumed she worked there as well. She approached us and stopped several feet away, then turned a bright smile on Matthew. “Hi, Matt. What brings you down from the Ornithology Lab?”

This is Doctor Allyson Reynolds, the veterinarian and raptor rehabilitation specialist I suggested to Rick we bring in to help with the injured eagle from Sapsucker Woods.”

Shelly took one more look at my arm entwined with Matthew’s then smiled again at him. “Would you like me to show her around?”

He paused a moment before replying. “That’s okay, Shelly. I can handle it, I know my way. No need to take time out of your busy schedule. I’ll just show Doctor Reynolds around, then bring her to meet Rick. He’s the one overseeing the care of the eagle. Oh…” He turned to me. “This is Doctor Shelly Madison, she’s a clinical associate professor in zoo medicine.”

I saw my chance and pulled my arm out of his, ostensibly to shake Shelly’s hand. I murmured hello. She responded stiffly. Her behavior made more sense to me than his. Why treat me like an honored guest? I was just a vet who specialized in raptor rehab. I had been so anxious to get out of town I’d jumped at the chance, but now there was one question paramount in my mind—why had he called me? They were the experts here.

Now, let’s show you around the animal hospital here.” His hands clenched, his bicep bulging under his short sleeve as he tugged the inner door to the offices open for me.

I fought the urge to retreat a step. Here stood a warrior from medieval legend. It would have been more appropriate for him to be dressed in leather armor than a button-down, short-sleeved khaki shirt, but he grabbed my hand and drew me around Shelly. “We’ll start in the library.”

As we walked, I had a stern conversation with my subconscious. Go to Ithaca, you said. You’ll get away from anyone Jen wants to set you up with, you said.

Matthew squeezed my hand. I looked up to see him beaming at me. My stomach lurched. I was out of the nest and free falling.

Sign up for Charity Sunday!

Image by Oliver Peters from Pixabay

This coming Sunday, the 26th of January, will be the next Charity Sunday.

Charity Sunday is a meme designed to give authors and bloggers a chance to give back to the world—as well as, hopefully, attract new readers.

How does it work? Each participant selects a favorite charity. Before Charity Sunday, you should prepare a blog post that: 1) talks about the charity and why you support it; 2) provides a link to the charity; 3) includes an excerpt from one of your books; 4) includes the code to show links to other participating blogs.

It’s fun if you can make the excerpt relate somehow to your chosen charity, but this isn’t required.

For every comment left on your post, you commit to giving some amount to the relevant charity. The specific charity and the amount to donate are up to you. The posts stay open all month, to maximize the amount of donations. You can set an upper limit to your donation if you want.

If you’d like to participate in the next Charity Sunday, just sign up using the Linky List below. Please be sure that the link you enter will lead directly to your Charity Sunday post, not just to the home page of your blog.

Review Tuesday: My Wife & Master Jake - #BDSM #erotica #ReviewTuesday

My Wife and Master Jake cover

My Wife & Master Jake by Pebbles Lacasse
Amazon KDP, 2019

Happily married for a decade, Beth and Henry have no children, and no complaints. They’re still in love; their sexual relationship is active and satisfying. Still, the problems Beth is having finishing her novel might indicate some underlying psychological issues, and her occasional fantasies in which her attentive and considerate husband turns demanding, even brutal, could suggest that she is not totally satisfied.

Perhaps that’s why Beth so willingly succumbs to seduction by Henry’s co-worker Jake. Blond, fit, sexy and articulate, Jake doesn’t shy away from telling Beth exactly what he wants from her – total physical and sexual submission. Younger than her husband by nearly a decade, he’s an experienced dominant, seeking a partner with whom he can play out his sadistic fantasies. Jake offers Beth pleasure, respect and safety, but is quite clear that their relationship will not include anything like love.

Jake is a temptation that Beth cannot resist, especially when Henry urges her to explore her submissive side. When it becomes obvious that Henry wants her to submit to Jake – that in fact, the men have discussed it, and Henry finds the scenario incredibly arousing – Beth agrees. Her decision launches both Beth and Henry on a perverse erotic journey that changes their lives as well as deepening their emotional bonds.

Few authors I know can write graphic, intense, extreme BDSM scenes as well as Pebbles Lacasse. From Beth’s and Jake’s first encounter, My Wife and Master Jake is scorchingly hot. Jake is demanding, inventive, and unrelenting in his use of Beth’s body. The scenes go on and on, one nasty implement of torture after another – one orifice after another – one orgasm after another. The Dom fulfills his promise to Beth, teaching her about pain, pleasure and the intimate connection between them. As the book continues, Henry joins in their scenes, along with beautiful Domme Jenna. In a marathon session close to the end of the novel, Ms. Lacasse delighted me by including both FF and MM interactions, something many erotica writers shy away from.

In short, if you’re looking for heavy BDSM scenes that will make you cringe while soaking your panties, I can recommend this novel. You’ll find plenty here to fuel your masturbatory fantasies.

If, however, you’re seeking something a little more substantial, a realistic portrait of a couple’s initiation into BDSM, you might be disappointed. I have to say that I found the characters in this book shallow, and the premise unconvincing. Jake’s proposal comes out of the blue, but Beth shows no real concern about submitting to a total stranger. Henry displays not the least hint of jealousy or sense of inferiority. Furthermore, Beth’s initiation was far too rapid to be believable. While it’s true that Jake escalates their scenes each time they meet, their very first session includes far more intense pain than a responsible Dom would ever inflict on a total novice. Meanwhile, Beth slips into submission with almost no difficulty – no self-doubt, no fear, just lots and lots of climaxes. Based on my personal experiences as a submissive, this didn’t ring true.

Another aspect that might be more controversial is Beth’s willingness to trust her body to someone she barely knows, with the proviso that love is strictly forbidden. For me, D/s begins in the mind, Submission and devotion are strongly linked. I can’t imagine surrendering to a dominant whom I didn’t love.

However, I know this isn’t true of everyone who is into kink. For some people, BDSM is more about the physical sensations than the emotional nuances. I guess Beth is supposed to be that sort of person.
One reason I wasn’t completely satisfied with My Wife and Master Jake is that I know Ms. Lacasse can do better. Her Coaching Rayna series offers both erotic intensity and emotional subtlety. This novel delivers the former, but is sadly lacking in the latter.

That might not matter to some readers, but it definitely does to me.

Excerpt

Someone put the wrong teeth in my mouth last night. The canines poked at the back of my lips as if they didn’t fit. I wanted them either buried deep in the gums or all removed. I hate teeth.

Trash trucks moan like suburban whales while they back down my cul-de-sac. The truck eeping irritated me more than the sharp light. Wallpaper images of two windows beamed sunlight onto my head. BUD programmed the walls and sounds from archives of the room I had growing up for today’s alarm. I needed extra help waking most mornings but especially ones like this.

Shall I turn the alarm off?”

Yes. Thanks, BUD."

My prominent sense of teeth in my mouth dragged me back to the memory of my disturbing dream—another in the monster series.

Would you care to dictate your dream, or will you be typing today?”

In a minute.”

Lying among the pillows for the rest of the afternoon would’ve been nice, but morning bladder ousted me. A glass-horn urinal emerged from the wall when the bathroom slid to a greater diameter. A glimpse of myself as the mirror flipped revealed the monster – although I guess there’s nothing new about my dark circles and bedhead hair. The sight prompted me to dictate last night’s werewolf dream while the concern for my mental well-being drained away with yesterday’s juice.

Damn teeth! I could use a drink. The canines still felt glued to the inside of my mouth. In the mirror inspection, my little porcelain cleavers appeared normal. Gross, but normal. Most of the time, it only took the image of lips separating a fraction to think of an opened wound. Beyond the teeth, disgust stemmed from dripping saliva, hordes of bacteria, and raw flesh waves of the palate. It all made me question the stability of dentists.

Review by Lisabet Sarai

Some science fiction books feel like mysteries. The author pitches you headlong into a foreign world, with technology, history, assumptions and problems very different from our own. As a reader, you have to follow the clues and figure out the rules in order to understand how the author’s imagined universe works. The process can be both frustrating and exhilarating. Each step you take toward comprehension provides a special kind of satisfaction. At the same time, the effort required to figure out the remaining puzzles sometimes makes reading as exhausting as it is pleasurable.

Bradley Wind’s novel BULB definitely fits this description.

As the story begins, we meet the protagonist Ben Tinthawin, a twenty nine year old “neuronal artist” who has been suffering from horrific dreams in which he becomes a monster. He is the guardian for his artificially created, conjoined twin brothers, Ed and Francis. The twins can wreak a lot of havoc, given that they have the minds of seven year olds but adult-sized bodies.

Ben’s father died in a horrific accident that left Ben both physically and emotionally scarred. His friend and therapist Laurel urges him to review the recordings of the event in the Grand Archive in order to work through his trauma, but Ben resists. Gradually, we come to understand that the Archive retains the records of everything that happens, to everyone on the planet, wherever light can reach.

The existence of “Informed Light” and the Archive it supports have revolutionized society. Anyone can view any instant in their own lives, or someone else’s. A terrible loss of privacy, some might argue, but with the openness of the Archive, society has become far more egalitarian and crime has almost ceased to exist. The supposedly unfalsifiable Archive serves as the gold standard of truth.

But then, what about the Faux Life Movement? Somehow, the members of this shadowy organization manage to fabricate Archive sequences that border on the absurd, pieces of performance theater which can’t be traced back to their antecedent events. No one understands how the FLM manages this. Intrigued, Ben and his best friend Lenny engage in their own outrageous masquerades, trying to attract the attention of FLM members.

Meanwhile, Mamon, the brilliant scientist who invented (or discovered) Informed Light, recruits Ben to work at his Center, where he pursues research that he claims will liberate humanity from error and suffering, and reveal the fundamental truth underlying existence. Ben works with the Saints, individuals who have voluntarily signed up to live their lives in a coma, generating energy to fuel Mamon’s studies. Using their journals as a source, Ben composes images to make their endless sleep happier and more comfortable.

At this point in the book, I had dozens of questions. How did the Archive come into existence? Why were the twins created? What is Mamon really trying to achieve? Who is the mysterious Susan, the woman who contacts Ben out of the blue to “talk about books”? What is the true mission of the Saints?

The journals provide the first solutions to some of the book’s mysteries. I thought this was a brilliant literary device, to help the reader tease out some of the threads in this complex story. Ben uncovers more clues as he wanders around the Center, trying to find his brothers, who seem to play some as-yet-unknown role in Mamon’s plans. Then he visits Susan in SkyCity, only to encounter shocking new information about his own life, the Archive, and Mamon’s ultimate objectives.

I wish I could say I completely understood the dramatic climax and the unexpected conclusion of BULB. Unfortunately, many aspects of the plot remained obscure to me. I don’t know whether this can be attributed to my own lack of comprehension or the author’s failure to effectively communicate all his ideas.

It’s probably the former; Bradley Wind writes very well and has a powerful, visual imagination. The book is studded with startling, creative scenes and vivid descriptions. Imagine, for instance, a “sport” in which people can catch a ride on a tornado, or a nightclub where you immerse yourself in a lake of intoxicating drugs.

Furthermore, my confusion didn’t stop me from enjoying this original and thought-provoking novel. It offers creepy moments worthy of a horror story as well as slapstick humor. Mamon turns out to be the prototypical mad scientist, ultimately consumed by his own visions. Ben is sensitive, brave, broken and believable. Lenny provides comic relief as well as stability. And Laurel, the mother goddess, brings true light into the darkness generated by Mamon’s twisted ambitions.

If you enjoy science fiction that makes you think, consider trying this book. It’s not easy, but it has its rewards.

Sizzling Sunday: The Gazillionaire and the Virgin - #bdsm #eroticromance #SizzlingSunday

Sizzling Sunday Bannder

For today’s Sizzling Sunday, I have a luscious excerpt from my BDSM erotic romance The Gazillionaire and the Virgin. Enjoy!

Blurb

Silicon Valley entrepreneur Rachel Zelinsky is not a woman who lets pleasure interfere with business, but when she meets reclusive genius Theo Moore, she can’t resist his geeky appeal. Though Theo’s knowledge about sex derives from extensive research and a stash of kinky porn rather than real-world experience, he is Rachel’s first true Master—and the first man to truly touch her heart.

Excerpt

Stop, stop – I can’t hold on...”

I let his cock slide out of my mouth, trailing my tongue along the shaft as it leaves. “You want me to stop sucking you?”

No – ah, yes – I mean, I think I’m going to come again...”

Swinging my leg over his hips, I let my pubic curls brush his cockhead.

And that’s bad?”

Oh...no...” His face looks panicked now, the pleasure smothered by some sort of fear. “But you – you’re supposed to go first...”

I spread my thighs and drop until I paint the tip of his cock with my juices, then snatch my pelvis away as he tries to push inside. I can’t help chuckling at his enthusiasm. I want him more than ever.

Don’t worry about me, Theo. I fully intend to come. More than once, most likely.” I scan the neat bedroom. “Where do you keep your condoms? In the bedside table drawer?”

Ah – what? Um – I – I don’t have any condoms...”

Huh? Don’t you believe in safe sex?”

I – uh – well...” His face turns scarlet with embarrassment.

Good thing I’m always prepared.” With a huff of mock exasperation, I roll off the bed and pad into the living room to find my purse. I’m too turned on to really be angry. Besides, I’m already becoming accustomed to Theo’s strangeness. “Meanwhile,” I call over my shoulder, “you get out of that tux. No point in doing any more damage.”

Under the influence of my recent fantasies, I’d slipped a three-pack of Durex extra large into my bag before leaving to pick Theo up for the fund raiser. Not that I’d expected anything to happen between us, of course, but one never knows. Now, given his apparent virility, I wonder whether I’ll run out.

I extract the condoms from my clutch, then take advantage of the break to make a quick trip to the toilet. When I return to the bedroom, I find Theo naked on the bed, his rampant cock aimed at the ceiling. One hand grips that fat rod of flesh, sliding up and down with practiced precision. He has flung the other arm across his face, as if he can’t bear to watch.

My fantasies didn’t do him justice. He has one of those massive, powerful bodies that make you want to fall to your knees in worship. He doesn’t have the bulging biceps or rippling six-pack of an exercise nut, but his big hands, broad shoulders and lean thighs broadcast strength. As he jerks at his cock, I watch the tightening in his abdomen, the shifting of muscle under the pale skin of his arm. Aside from the black fuzz surrounding his cock, he’s mostly hairless.

Saliva pools in my mouth. I want to swallow that lovely cock once again, to torment him until he can’t help but spill his seed into my mouth. Later. Right now the hungry ache between my thighs takes precedence.

Starting without me?”

He snatches his hand away from his penis with the startled, guilty look of a kid caught in the act. “Um – no – just thinking...”

I straddle him again, leaning forward to trail my rigid nipples across his smooth chest. On my hands and knees, I smile down on him. His bobbing cock streaks my belly with pre-cum and baby oil. “About me?”

His eyes meet mine, suddenly bold. “You know I am, Rachel. Don’t tease. I can’t stand much more.”

He’s open, unguarded, showing me the depth of his need. Some part of me melts in the unflinching heat of that gaze. “All right, Theo.” I feather a kiss across his ripe lips, then sit back. My butt resting on his thighs, I roll a condom down over his erection. He gasps when my fingers make contact with his stretched skin.

I want to impale myself on him, to drive that tempting column of flesh as far into me as it can go. Still, I hover over him an instant more, my thighs spread wide, my juices dribbling into his pubic hair. Once more our eyes lock. Do it. I read it on his face, a plea, a command.

Unwilling to relinquish control, I lower my body bit by bit. My labia enclose the head of his cock, clinging to the smooth flesh. He enters my channel, an inch, then two, stretching me wide. I pulse my inner muscles around his cock and watch the pleasure spark in his eyes. Another fraction of an inch. I alter my angle a bit. His half-buried stalk nudges my clit.

Delicious! I could devour him with my pussy, but instead I savor his gradual entrance, the new sensations triggered by each increment of depth.

Damn it, woman! I said don’t tease!” Theo seizes my hips and pulls me down, ramming his cock in the rest of the way. The force makes me gasp. His sudden, massive bulk splits me open. Just as I’m getting used to being full, he raises me, so that he slips half-out. Then he slams me down again, driving even deeper.
