Capturing Inspiration, Waiting for Energy - #WritersNotebook #AmWriting #Series

If you’re an author, you’ve probably been advised to carry a notebook with you all the time – the way a photographer always carries a camera. The idea is that you can use the notebook whenever inspiration strikes: to jot down story ideas, snippets of conversation, or paragraphs of text that come to mind.

I’ve had a notebook for more than ten years. It lives in a cubby in my headboard. I don’t bring it out on the street at least partly because the contents could be compromising if someone else read them. Also, I don’t want to lose my ideas. Finally, I seem to get much of my inspiration in bed. Wipe those thoughts from your dirty mind! What I mean is that I’m much more likely to come up with ideas after my work day is through, when I’m relaxing and reading as I normally do before going to sleep. I also am prone to erotic dreams; I want to have some place to write them down before the emotions vanish.

When I browse through the notebook, I find plenty of thoughts about stuff I haven’t written (at least not yet). It’s also gratifying, though, to notice how many concepts I actually have fleshed out and published. Sometimes there’s a long lag between the appearance of an idea and its realization. I might have an inspiration, but not be able to devote the necessary time or energy to bring it to fruition.

I’ve decided this shouldn’t bother me. Sometimes, I’m just not ready to follow my ideas.

This weekend, I started work on a series I outlined in my notebook more than six years ago. At that time, I was writing almost exclusively erotic romance, for an indie publisher. I’d realized that my colleagues had better sales when they wrote series rather than standalone titles, and thought I should give it a go. So I roughed out the framework for a set of steampunk books entitled The Toy Makers Guild.

The basic premise: a remote mansion in an alternative Victorian England, where a group of brilliant young engineers (male and female) create customized, automated sex toys for wealthy and influential clients. Of course, anyone who worked in such an environment would need to be both sexually liberal and sexually knowledgeable. A bit of a taste for dominance and submission would also be appropriate, given the British love of corporal punishment.

This notion set the creative juices flowing. At the time, though (I see now), I just wasn’t ready to write a series. Plus I was having a hard time reconciling my notions about the free-wheeling sexual environment in the Guild with the constraints of the erotic romance genre.

Fast forward to 2020. I’ve written two series at this point (Vegas Babes and Asian Adventures). I have a much better understanding of how to link a set of books together. My imagination is less likely to shut down after I write “The End” for a single book. Meanwhile, I’m now self-publishing almost all my work, which means I don’t have to follow anyone’s rules about genre or what is and is not acceptable.

So I’m happy to announce that I’ve written the first two chapters of The Pornographer’s Apprentice, which will be the first book in The Toy Makers Guild series. I have titles and plans for the next two as well – they’re right there in the notebook – though of course my ideas may change as I write.

That’s okay. The purpose of the notebook is to capture ideas, not to constrain them.

Stay tuned!

Free! A Shameless Little Con by @MeliRaineAuthor - #romanticsuspense #scandal #freebie

Freebie Blitz banner

About the Book

I didn’t do it.

I never betrayed my friend.

Last year, I was kidnapped along with presidential candidate’s daughter Lindsay Bosworth, forced to help her assailants, my mother implicated in one of the biggest political scandals in American history.

I've been cleared of any wrongdoing, but that doesn’t matter. Once you’re tried by the media, you’re guilty as sin. The truth doesn’t get the public’s attention.

But shame? Shame sells.

And everyone assumes you’re tainted.

Now I have my own personal security team, courtesy of the United States government. Not the one you learned about in civics class, though.

I’m being tracked by the deep state. The shadow government. They’ve assigned Silas Gentian to be with me twenty-four seven. He thinks he knows everything about me – all of it bad -- and he does.

On paper.

Like everyone else, he assumes I’m a traitor. A backstabber. A betrayer. Someone who helped a group of violent psychopaths, puppets of powerful men in Washington who made me into a tool.

Yet I see how he looks at me. True desire can’t be faked.

Or hidden.

And that goes both ways.

He assumes I’m trying to fool him.

And he might be right.

But not for the reasons he thinks.

Excerpt

He jolts, digging into his pocket to pull out a phone. Before he turns the screen away from me, I see his backdrop. It’s of a small dark-haired child on a beach, the picture taken from behind, her skirt flying around her legs, the little girl in motion, the blue skies over the green water idyllic.

Does he have a child? Who is the little girl? As Silas reads his screen, his shoulders slump slightly–in defeat.

What the hell is in that text he’s reading?

He leans his elbow against the door, setting the phone face down on his thigh, his expression troubled. I want to ask him if he’s okay. I want to ask him about the little girl. I want to ask him so many questions.

Most of all, I want to ask him to be kind to me.

I need someone to be kind to me.

Anyone.

Because you can live for a very long time in isolation.

But you can’t live among people for very long without needing kindness. It’s as essential as oxygen, as water, as food.

While you might not technically die without kindness, the existence you’re left with is worse than dying.

The Accidental Series - #series #inspiration #VegasBabes @Archer_Larry

Stack of books

Conventional wisdom and statistics suggest that books in a series tend to sell better than standalone titles. This makes sense; once an author gets readers hooked on a fictional world or a set of characters, they’ll buy new series volumes because they want more of what they enjoyed before. You only have to convince a reader once, rather than woo them anew for every book.

Nevertheless, until recently, I haven’t had much success writing a series or even a sequel. I’ve tried. I’ve left some plot points unresolved. I’ve pondered my secondary characters. I’ve even outlined a series or two. I found I just couldn’t do it.

Somehow, when I’d finally typed “The End”, I felt that I didn’t have more to say. My characters had achieved their HEA, the conflicts had mostly been resolved, it was time to move on to something different.

Indeed, my tendency to experiment with a variety of sub-genres has been one force pushing me away from a series. I don’t like to be bored. Plus I enjoy the challenge of tackling something completely different from my previous work. Hence my catalog includes contemporary, science fiction, historical, steampunk, paranormal, fantasy, gay, lesbian, menage, BDSM, romance, humor and dark erotica. This diversity conflicts with the whole concept of a series, which might focus on different characters in each book, but requires a consistent genre and world view.

The relatively slow pace of my publishing also makes a series difficult. My writing time is scarce. I do a lot of business traveling. Typically it takes me many months to finish a book. A successful series depends on regularly feeding the readers’ habit, which is tough for me to guarantee.

Last year, as something of a lark (and egged on by my colleague Larry Archer), I decided to try writing stroke erotica. I wrote Hot Brides in Vegas in record time (for me...). To my great surprise, almost as soon as the book came out, I had ideas for a sequel. The characters in Hot Brides wanted more time to play. Plus I had so enjoyed the no-holds-barred, over-the-top fun of writing the first book, I wanted to do it again.

Last month I brought out the second book in what I’ve decided to called the Vegas Babes series, More Brides in Vegas. More Brides takes place about six months after Hot Brides. There’s an overlap in characters and setting with the first book. More important, it’s equally outrageous in its actionif not more so! That’s one problem with a series. You’ve got to maintain the intensity, to hold the reader’s attention. To be honest, I think I managed quite well in this regard.

And guess what? I’ve already started Vegas Babes 3, Sin City Sweethearts. Once again, the book follows the previous one in time and reprises some of the same characters (including some cameo appearances from Book 1). I’m working hard to ensure that this new book is as wild, as hot and as funny as the first two.

I hope I’m up to it!

And how many Vegas Babes volumes will there be? I have no idea. I’m just following my muse, who seems to have decided that it’s time for to write a series after all.

Actually, I have to thank Larry, too. I doubt I would have stayed around to play in Vegas if not for his encouragement. We've been trying to match our releases - though his books are more than twice as long as mine! His most recent is Crashing the Swinger's Pajama Party. And it's half price over at Smashwords, until the end of July.

He felt the rightness of this union - #historical #fantasy #giveaway @TanyaAnneCrosby

The King's Favorite cover

Blurb

Fearing her “gifts” will be used to defeat her sister Matilda, Elspeth escapes the Black Mountain priory that has sheltered them since their father's death, only to find herself indebted to, of all men, a Scotsman, whose loyalties are in question...

Excerpt

Whatever Malcom had expected, it wasn’t this. Elspeth was standing near the brazier, wearing a scandalously diaphanous chainse that left little to the imagination. The room was misty, perhaps from her bath, and the firelight played off the shadows in her gown, revealing the shadowed valley of her breast and the darkened hollow between her thighs. Her red-gold hair was still damp and braided into one full plait that fell over her shoulder so that the damp, feathery tip teased at her nipple. God help him, even as tired as he was, the sight of her hardened him fully.

I was…”

Waiting for me?” he said with a slow, unfurling smile, and now that they were home, preparing to spend their first night… alone… in their bed... he felt the rightness of this union down to his bones—and in one bone more than any other.

He crossed the room and took her into his arms, kissing her soundly. “You’re here,” she said, once their lips parted. “Tis no dream.”

Nay, lass. But if it is,” he said, “would that I never awaken,” and he drew her slowly toward the bed, kissing her shoulder, letting his hands roam freely over the treasure of her body.

The book that shouldn't have happened @pjmaclayne #WolvesGambit #shifters #giveaway

Wolve's Gambit cover

By P.J. MacLayne (Guest Blogger)

I have a confession to make.

I never set out to write a paranormal romance.

And I never imagined writing an urban fantasy/paranormal romance series. To this day, I haven't read books or seen the Twilight movies. And maybe that's a good thing.

Because the premise for Wolves' Pawn came to me in a dream, and I decided to try to turn it into a short story. And it was free from the influence of other paranormal stories. Then the original characters took aver and turned the short story into a book. But once it was complete and I'd decided it was good enough to publish, I thought I was done with it. I turned my attention to a new story with new characters.

But something funny happened as I wrote the third book in my mysteries series.

I wasn't even halfway through the first draft when a minor character from Wolves' Pawn started bugging me. She nagged me to write her story, and convinced me it was a good one. So Wolves' Knight happened. And again I thought I was done with the paranormal storyline.

But once I went back and completed the third mystery, it happened again. Another character from Wolves' Pawn started talking to me. I mean, she appeared on all of two or three pages of the book, she was so minor. But she had a story to tell, and I was elected to be the one to write it.

And that's how Wolves' Gambit, my newest book, was born.

Of course, the story isn't what I planned. I started the story in Wyoming, and expected to move it to the East Coast after the first couple of chapters. It didn't happen that way. Lori Grenville, the main character, took over and decided the entire story would take place in Wyoming. That meant I had to revise the entire plot, but it worked out, and made it a better story.

So my stand-alone first book is now a series, although each book is a separate story. And I can see more books for that series in the future. Heck, I can imagine an entire new series springing from one scene in the last book!

With that said, let me introduce you to Lori Grenville, the main character from Wolves' Gambit, the book that should never have happened.

Blurb

Wolf-shifter Lori Grenville was rescued from near-slavery and a brutal pack leader by the Free Wolves. To pay back the favor, she's dedicated her life to helping others in the same situation, leading shifters to safety and a new start, risking her life in the process. She's faced down alphas and has no qualms in undermining pack structure.

Now she's challenged with the task of restoring an alpha to his rightful place. If she gets it right, she can stop a war from ripping apart two packs and spreading across an entire state. If she fails, she'll be among the first to die.

There's still the option of walking away and letting the Jaeger and Destin packs destroy each other. That means she'll fail in her original mission of rescuing the daughter of the Jaeger alpha before the girl is forced into marriage for political gain.

Lori hasn't failed in a mission yet. This one may be the exception.

Excerpt

With a smooth motion, she swung the shotgun to her shoulder. Without taking time to aim, she squeezed the trigger. The recoil pushed her against the wall, which held her up. The wolf, still advancing, snarled and tightened the muscles in his hindquarters. Lori didn't have time to figure out his plan of attack. She fired the second barrel. He dropped to the floor, whined, and crawled under a table.

She retrieved two more shells from her pocket and reloaded. Outside, a lone wolf howled. It echoed in the night but received no answer. Surely Eugene hadn’t taken down an enemy already? Or had he abandoned her?

With her back against the wall, she took a deep breath and braced herself for another attack. An oppressive silence, broken only by her breathing and the soft whimpering of the wolf she'd shot, blanketed the bar. Lori jerked her head, trying to shake a few stray hairs away from her eyes. She didn't dare loosen her grip on the gun.

Then two wolves, side by side, emerged from the darkness outside and hurtled through the window frame. A third followed. The first two paced towards her shoulder to shoulder. When she pulled the trigger, the scatter of one shot hit both of them. One stumbled for a fraction of a second, but didn't stop. In two steps, they'd be on her.

She fired again, the recoil pushing her hard against the wall. The double damage at close range forced them back. One limped to the window and crawled out. The other sought refuge behind the bar.

She still had the third wolf to deal with and empty chambers. She broke open the gun and dumped the spent casings. They clattered to the floor, rolling towards the center of the room. The last wolf gathered himself for his onrush. Her hands shaking, Lori pulled more ammo from her pocket. One slipped from her fingers and rattled to the floor. There was no time to get another. She dropped the lone round in the chamber.

One Thing Leads to Another @PaulaRomances #Ireland #Connemara #series #romance

Connemara Landscape

By Paula Martin (Guest Blogger)

Five years ago, when I was writing IRISH INHERITANCE, I had no idea it would lead to a series of five books. I thought I was writing a stand-alone story about two people who meet when they jointly inherit Mist Na Mara, a Victorian house in Connemara in the west of Ireland.

Once that was finished and submitted, I started writing a story set in the English Lake District. The hero was a veterinary surgeon, and the heroine was an actress who was escaping her busy life in London for some well-earned ‘R and R’ in the country. I wasn’t very happy with the way it was progressing, but then my publisher suggested the possibility of a spin-off story about the best friend of the heroine in Irish Inheritance. ‘Okay’, I thought. ‘I’ll think about that once I’ve sorted out this Lake District story.’

Two days later, I had another thought: ‘Why not move the Lake District story to Ireland?’ The hero became an Irish vet, but I had to rethink the heroine’s reasons for being in Ireland, so that it followed on from where she had been at the end of the first story. I also needed to inject more ‘suspense’ into the story, with some unexplained crises at the veterinary surgery, and the hero’s wife trying to claim custody of their two children – and that’s how IRISH INTRIGUE was born.

Half way through this story, one of the characters was explaining to the hero his idea for a screenplay about an American who was adopted as a baby and comes to Ireland to search for her birth mother. Even while I was writing this conversation, I realised the character had given me the idea for my next novel.

I then had to do a fair amount of research about the baby adoption scandal in Ireland in the 1950s and 1960s. Because of the timing, I decided my heroine needed to be trying to find her mother’s birth mother (rather than her own) but coming up against a wall of secrecy (which, indeed, is what real-life adoptees have had to face). This gave me the title of IRISH SECRETS, and I also gave the hero a secret of his own.

After this trilogy of Irish novels, I contemplated a different setting for my next novel (and even started to write it), but Ireland pulled me back. In this story, the heroine and her friend were setting up a dance and drama school for children, which made it easy to transfer the story to the Mist Na Mara Arts Centre. This story became IRISH DECEPTIONS, with a hero who appears to be deceiving the heroine.

A thirteen-year-old streetwise boy in Irish Deceptions led me to my fifth book in the series, IRISH SHADOWS (to be published later this year), when I realised his mother, (deserted by her lover when she became pregnant at seventeen) had a story to tell. A quick check on the timeline of the series showed me that five years had passed since the launch of the Mist Na Mara Arts Centre – and this gave me my hero, an events manager who arrives to organise the anniversary celebration. Add to that a link to an incident in the Irish Civil War in the 1920’s and the hero’s search for his nephew (his sister’s son), and I had plenty of ‘shadows of the past’ to deal with and resolve.

Although all the stories are ‘stand-alone’ with new heroes and heroines in each, some of the characters from the previous stories do reappear in minor roles, and my readers have told me how much they enjoy ‘meeting’ with ‘old friends’ again. I feel the same, as I have lived with all these characters for the past five years, and Mist Na Mara is as real to me as my own home!

IRISH INHERITANCE, Mist Na Mara Series Book 1

Blurb

English actress, Jenna Sutton, and American artist, Guy Sinclair, are thrown together when they find they’ve jointly inherited a house on the west coast of Ireland. Neither knows their connection to their unknown benefactress, but they set about unravelling the intriguing tale of a 19th century love affair. Despite their personal reasons for not wanting romantic involvements, Jenna and Guy feel their growing attraction.

When local property agent, Eve Callaghan, appears to have her own agenda, friction builds over Jenna and Guy’s decision about the house and its contents.

Will their Irish inheritance bring them together - or drive them apart?

Excerpt

A house in Ireland?’ Jenna Sutton stared over the mahogany desk at the lawyer. ‘Someone I’ve never heard of has left me a house in Ireland?’

The white-haired lawyer peered over his steel-rimmed spectacles. ‘A half share of the house, Ms. Sutton. Along with a half share of what, at current exchange rates, amounts to approximately fifty thousand pounds.’

Jenna shook her head and swiped several strands of her hair back behind her ear. ‘I don’t understand, Mr. Moore. Why would this Helena – what did you say her name was?’

Miss Helena Keating.’

Why has she left me a house and twenty-five thousand pounds? How does she even know about me?’

Ms. Sutton, I can only give you the information passed to me by the law firm of Daniel McGrath in Dublin. We were instructed to find any descendants of James Oliver Sutton—’

My grandfather.’

Yes, and as far as we can ascertain, you are his sole descendant.’

Do you know what the link is between this woman and my grandfather?’

That wasn’t part of our instructions.’

Have you any information about her?’

Mr. Moore pushed his glasses back up his nose and flipped through the papers in the blue manila folder on his desk. ‘Miss Keating was born in 1920 in County Galway, Ireland, and died last year in Dalkey, near Dublin, where she has lived since 1940.’

That means she was—’ She did a quick calculation in her head. ‘About fifteen years older than my grandfather.’

The lawyer picked up another sheet of paper. ‘Yes, he was born in April 1936.’

I wasn’t aware he knew anyone in Ireland, and I’m pretty sure he never went over there. He lived his whole life in a small village in Kent.’

She couldn’t imagine her grandfather being anyone’s toy boy either. He’d been devoted to her grandmother, so what on earth was his connection with this Irish woman?
