Review Tuesday: Country Girl, City Lights by Giselle Renarde #ReviewTuesday #romance #magic

Country Girl, City Lights cover

Country Girl, City Lights by Giselle Renarde
Amazon KDP and Smashwords, 2020

When Matt, supposedly the love of her young life, moves away from their small Canadian town to the big city, Delia follows. She’s convinced he’ll eventually get in touch, that he’ll realize how devoted she is and will finally see that they’re destined to be together. Meanwhile, she gets a job working security at an art gallery. Not only do they pay her peanuts, but the manager bullies her, the gorgeous docent patronizes her, and she’s forced to wear a horrible, baggy, militaristic uniform.

Alone, poverty-stricken and desperately unhappy, Delia has only her unrequited love to sustain her. Then one day she falls asleep in the Roccoco Room of the gallery and finds herself within the landscape of a pastoral scene by Leduc. Furthermore, she’s not alone. In addition to a flock of perfectly delightful sheep, she makes the acquaintance of the handsome shepherd Jacob. Unlike everyone in her real life, Jacob respects her, cares about her, indeed seems to want her. Too bad he’s just a fantasy she’s summoned to escape from her loneliness.

Giselle Renarde has a reputation for kinkiness. She’s responsible for some of the most deliciously filthy erotica I’ve ever read. Her characters always feel genuine; her beautifully written descriptions of sexual acts are always supported by insights into how the participants feel about the process. Country Girl, City Lights proves that she’s equally adept when writing in a romantic mood.

Delia seems very real, her dilemma eminently plausible. Indeed, I have a friend who made the same choice, deluding herself that the man she followed to New York City would eventually wake up and claim her. Though far from stupid, Delia’s like too many women, confusing lust with love and believing that if they only give enough of themselves, the object of their desire will wake up and love them back.

Your heart will ache for Delia, as she blindly pursues her teenage dream. You’ll applaud when she finally comes to understand the true nature of her relationship with Matt. And you’ll close your e-reader, more than satisfied, when she earns a well-deserved though surprising happy ending.

Country Girl, City Lights is a quick read that will leave you with smile, a sweet and sexy romance infused with a hint of magic. I recommend it.

A tempest rising - #fantasy #romance #epic #giveaway

Fire Song cover

Blurb

Praised for her beauty and grace, deep down, Seren Pendragon fears a tempest rising inside her. Her mother is a witch, her sisters are in peril, and she has been promised to a beast of a man who's already murdered one king. When she and her youngest sister seize the opportunity for escape neither realizes how much their struggle will cost, and it will take a terrible tragedy to unleash Seren’s inner fire and true nature.

The Bastard of Warkworth is no stranger to misfortune. Everything he held dear vanished one night in a wisp of smoke and fire, and he has been scarred by his encounters with Seren's own mother, Morwen Pendragon. Even so, when one of the witch’s daughters finds herself in trouble, Wilhelm must find the champion within and ride to her rescue.

Excerpt

Where are you going?” she asked in surprise.

Home,” he said irascibly.

Nay, my lord—not lest you mean to go by ship. And you’ll not put me on another one after what I have witnessed. You would have to gag and bind me, and tis not very likely I would stand still to allow it.”

I am not your lord,” he said again. “I’m no man’s lord.” And he kept riding, without bothering to turn back. Seren cast Jack a bewildered glance. The boy shrugged.

It was her habit, she supposed, to call every man of consequence lord. Somehow, it seemed better to give Wilhelm deference, but he clearly did not like it. And yet, he behaved like a willful lord, doing whatsoever pleased, keeping whatever pace he saw fit, and never bothering to ask what Seren would like to do. Hadn’t he said he was here to help? Well, he hadn’t had very much to say since insisting she accept his aid.

Wait here,” she said to Jack, and spurred her mare to catch up with the sour-faced lout. “I do not mean to disparage you,” she confessed. “Tis but that you seem more a lord to me than most lords do.”

He grunted in answer, but kept going, and Seren frowned.

How was she supposed to travel with his man, who seemed so intent upon ignoring her? He hadn’t said much of anything since retrieving Jack.

What in the name of St. Afan would you have me call you if not lord?”

Wilhelm,” he replied. “And since when do you Pendragon sisters swear by the name of saints?”

Seren lifted her chin. “I lived most of my life in a priory,” she informed him. And then she whispered, “I cannot very well swear by the Goddess, can I? Else Jack will wonder.”

Well,” he said. “That’s your fault. Had you left the boy in Dover you wouldn’t have to pretend you are someone you are not. And anyway, I doubt he knows St. Afan, either.”

Had he somehow taken offense? “Do you know St. Afan?”

Nay,” he said. “And neither do I aspire to. He’s some Welshman, by the sounds of him. But, more importantly, do you know who he is?”

Seren frowned. “Nay, sir. I do not,” she confessed. “Though I did hear Father Ersinius invoke him on occasion. I am not so much impressed by saints.”

What are you impressed by?”

Seren bristled. She was not going to confess herself to this impertinent stranger. “What I wouldst like to know is what you wish me to call you if not lord—can you, please, stop! Please?” She reined in her horse, peering back at Jack, who was staring at them with furrowed brows.

Nay,” he replied, without turning.

Seren sighed, and moved forward once more. “Where are you going?”

Home, I said.”

She furrowed her brow. “You are not going home! Did you not read that sign? You are going to Ramsgate, returning to the ocean, and, once again, I will remind you that lest you have a ship, or you and your horse would like to have a good swim, the road to Canterbury is the road best traveled.”

Finally, he stopped, turning to look at her, and his cheeks appeared to bloom. Without a word, he spun his mare about, trotting back toward Jack, who was still waiting right where Seren left him. Wilhelm passed him by, never sparing him or the signpost a glance.

He couldn’t read, she realized, with blinding insight.

A wildly creative urban fantasy by @Cristelle Comby -- #Review #Giveaway #Detective

Tour Banner

Blurb

There’s “hard to kill”—and then there’s Bellamy Vale.

After narrowly preventing the destruction of Cold City, PI Bellamy Vale needs a rest. Or rather, he needs a plain and simple vanilla case—no monsters or otherworldly creatures involved! When foreign businessman Eli Smith shows up at his doorstep with a thick wallet and a request to find his missing sister, Vale doesn’t think twice before agreeing. If he’d known body-hopping demons and smoke monsters came attached to this job, however, he might have.

Review by Lisabet Sarai

Private investigator Bellamy Vale is a man who knows too much – specifically too much about the dark supernatural forces that exist in parallel with our ordinary world, and which occasionally spill over the boundaries into the light of day. He has just finished mopping up after an apocalyptic rift in the fabric of reality that released incalculable evil – and incidentally leveled the entire downtown area of Cold City in the process. Now all that Bell wants is a shower to wash off the ectoplasmic goo, two aspirin for his painful bruises, and some sleep.

Instead he gets a new client, a cadaverous gentleman with an unusually acute sense of smell who wants Bell’s help to find his missing sister. The PI is pretty sure there’s something weird about this guy, but the client has cold cash, and his story stirs Bell’s sympathy. As the two pursue the slender leads they have available, Bellamy learns that Eli Smith and his sister Sarit are both djinn, and that the hot shot fashion designer who has kidnapped her is the vessel for an ifrit, an ageless evil being whom the djinn have been battling for eons.

This is definitely not what Bell signed on for, but what can he do? It’s his destiny to fight creatures of darkness – and to hide the fact that such creatures exist from the mortals around him, including his girlfriend, Police Sergeant Melanie Ramirez.

Evil Embers is a lively, surprising urban fantasy with an engaging hero. I really appreciated Cristelle Comby’s creativity. She brings all sorts of supernatural elements into the mix: Middle Eastern demons, Greek gods, Cherokee shamans, ghosts, poltergeist, zombies... honestly, you never know what you’re going to run into in Cold City!

Superficially Vale is modeled after the classic cynical and hard-boiled PI of noir detective novels, but in fact he’s got a soft heart and a strong moral compass. He hates the fact that he has to lie to his girlfriend. He hates even more the way this destroys his relationship. However, he has no choice For one thing, his soul is more or less owned by Lady Death, who has promised him he won’t die as long as he does her errands. This enigmatic femme fatale (quite literally!) only shows up twice in the book, but those were my favorite scenes. I also greatly enjoyed the character of Zian, the computer whiz who’s the estranged son of Hermes, Messenger of the Gods.

I had two complaints about the book. First, I had a hard time following the (many) fight scenes. Maybe I wasn’t paying close enough attention, or maybe they weren’t described clearly, but I found myself becoming confused.

Second, the book needed better editing. I noted multiple grammar errors (mostly related to verb tense) as well as some incorrect word usage. It’s possible these problems might not catch the attention of the average reader, but since I’m also an editor, I couldn’t help but notice.

Neither of these issues spoiled what was for the most part a very entertaining read. If you like magic in myriad forms, you’ll likely enjoy Evil Embers.

Excerpt

So what if it was mid-February? The way I was feeling that morning, I planned to sleep until New Year came around again. Hells, as far as I was concerned, I earned it ten times over. I put an end to a string of gruesome killings, prevented the apocalypse our former mayor intended for us, and I’d stuck around long enough to clean up the mess she and her minions left behind. All that thinking took out the last bit of energy I had. I closed my eyes, found a way to lie down that didn’t hurt too much, and let sleep throw its soothing blanket over me.

And then someone knocked at the door.

I groaned at the wrong timing but kept my eyes shut. There was no way in Tartarus that I was getting back up again so soon. Whoever it was could get lost.

The knocking came again.

It was more insistent this time. I could hear a sense of urgency to the motion. I forced one eye open and frowned. The sunlight streaming in from the window was too bright for it to be morning and the angle it bounced off the floorboards was all wrong. I opened my second eye and glanced at the clock on the bedside table…Three in the afternoon.

The hells?” I muttered, wondering where the day went while I shook my head to clear out the cobwebs.

The knock came a third time and I got up, grumbling all the way to the door. I didn’t bother to put clothes on or to tidy myself up before opening it. I was clad only in an old pair of sweatpants with a variety of cuts, bruises, and bandages on full display throughout my upper body. I hadn’t shaved in a week, and I was sure my hair was a sweaty mess of brown locks and dried blood.

Who knows, I thought, maybe the sight of me will convince my uninvited guest to let me get back to my coma.

If the man in the hallway took notice of my state, he didn’t let it show. He was tall and sickly thin under his rumbled three-piece suit. His pale skin provided some severe contrast with the purple bags under his brown eyes. He was somewhere between forty and forty-five. His angular face wasn’t familiar, and my frown deepened.

He looked like a potential client, the I-want-to-know-who- my-wife-is-banging type, but they rarely showed up to my private address unannounced. I made a lot of enemies in my professional career, not all of them on this side of the border, so my business card only listed my cell number.

The suit he wore appeared brand new, but I frowned more as I realized something didn’t add up. I was no fashion expert, but the matching of colors between the vest and shirt was off, brownish orange shirt covered by a purple jacket. Oh, and he wore a tie that matched his jacket…ugh. The light brown shoes were also at odds with the indigo blue pants. And there was the smell on the guy. It wasn’t a garbage smell—I’d been around enough of that over the last month to know it at first whiff—but there was a smoky quality about it that stood out.

I filed the information away for later and looked the man squarely in the eye. “What?” I croaked, my tongue feeling too thick and my mouth too dry.

Bellamy Vale?” he asked, with an accent that wasn’t from around here…Middle Eastern, maybe?

I jerked my thumb at the bell next to the door. It had my name on it.

The man peered down at it perplexed, then pressed the round button. A shrill ringing shot out of the tiny plastic box above the door, and the sound sent sharp needles dancing through my brain. I winced in pain.

Yeah—yeah, that’s me.” I rushed the words out, eager to make the noise stop. Damn, but my head was killing me. My odd gentleman caller took his finger off the button to look at me again.

I need your help,” he said, “to find my sister.”

I needed help too, preferably in the form of another round of painkillers. But that was going to have to wait. I waved my potential new client inside.

Fate hasn't finished with them -- #MMRomance #magic #gayeroticromance @elodieparkes

Handsome Luke Kirby loves books, so when he finds boxes of old and beautiful tomes in a dusty shop, he can’t resist buying them. To his delight one of them contains what he hopes will bring an end to his loneliness and heartache. As he prepares to cast an ancient prayer spell to the god of love, across town Ethan Goss decides that moving to a new apartment will ease his broken heart.

With the help of an eccentric real estate agent, gorgeous Ethan goes to a viewing in the block where Luke lives.

When Luke meets Ethan in the lobby, it’s the start of a passionate love affair.

Fate hasn’t finished with the two handsome men—will true happiness evade them both?

Excerpt

In the lobby, Victor stopped walking. “I should show you the garden, but I need the key for the gate. It’s in my car. Wait here a moment.” He strode rapidly out of the front doors.

Ethan checked out the table in the foyer where mail sat in three neat stacks. One stack had a lot, the others not much at all. Ethan couldn’t help reading the names on the envelopes. As his gaze traveled over the addresses, someone clattered down the polished hardwood stairs.

Ethan turned to the footsteps.

A young man glanced up from watching where his feet fell. His blue eyes locked with Ethan’s stare.

Ethan gazed at him, and his stomach lurched. His heart pounded. Not one word would form in his mind other than, Wow.

The young man smiled, approaching the table. “Hi. I’m collecting my snail mail—yeah, not much as usual.”

Through a daze of attraction, Ethan watched the man pick up the two envelopes in his stack. He looked the young man up and down, taking in his hard body and fashionably cut dark hair. He held back a sigh of appreciation as the man turned to him.

Are you the new tenant?” He waved a hand at the apartment door.

His low voice traveled over Ethan like a glaze of melting honey. Ethan stared at the man’s handsome face. He is gorgeous. About my age, too. “I haven’t taken the place yet, just…just viewed it.”

The young man moved closer. “You should take it. There aren’t many places as good, big, and with a garden this close to the city.” He held out his hand. “Luke Kirby. I live on the third floor, but that’s my patch of garden next to yours, if you take the place. It might seem odd to have to trundle down the stairs to sit in the sun with my coffee, but I’ve grown used to it.” His eyes sparkled at Ethan. He held Ethan’s gaze as he talked.

Butterflies filled Ethan’s stomach. He couldn’t stop his heart hammering and wondered if he could actually speak, meeting Luke had such an effect on him. “Ethan Goss.” He shook Luke’s hand. What he felt like doing was pulling the guy close and kissing those perfect lips that moved again.

Pleased to meet you.” Luke held on to Ethan’s hand. His eyes held something unspoken.

A wave of longing rose through Ethan. His loneliness and need for sex put an ache in his stomach, replacing the butterflies. He glanced down at the strong hand gripping his, wondering if he could hold on a little longer, despite how weird that might be. Better not, that’s kinda creepy. All the same, it wasn’t Ethan who abandoned the handshake.

Luke let go but trailed his fingertips along Ethan’s palm as he withdrew his hand.

With his skin tingling from the touch, Ethan gazed into Luke’s blue eyes and knew. He’s gay. He somehow knows I am, too—probably the way I’m ogling him. He’s interested in me. Thank you, god. Ethan flashed his eyes at Luke with a flirtatious expression he usually reserved for cute guys he met in the gay bar.

Their love spans centuries -- #romance #travel #giveaway @Doug_Walsh75

Blurb

After getting blacklisted from the venture capital industry, twenty-nine-year-old Edward Vaughan will do anything to avoid telling his wife what happened. Even if it means agreeing to her dream of bicycling around the world. Kara, tired of being married to a workaholic, was readying for a divorce. Now, she’s packing bags of a different kind. Together, they pedal away from Seattle, headed east on the open road across America, Europe, and beyond.

Theirs is a decision that reverberates across centuries, shattering a continuum that bound their souls throughout time, and traps Edward in a battle with a past life over an eternal love.

As the miles roll by, and the couple's sordid secrets begin to surface, the couple encounters several men plucked from history, each one a vessel of Edward’s soul in a prior life. Of them, a 19th century art dealer proves dangerous, believing Kara is his ticket back to the past.

Tailwinds Past Florence is a contemporary love story with a magical twist, landing readers in the saddle of a global bicycle adventure.

Excerpt

With no kids on the horizon or in-laws willing to travel all that way, the second bedroom had become a land of forgotten hobbies. Dust-covered mountain bikes leaned where a dresser may have stood, a paint-splattered drop cloth took the place of a guest bed, an empty easel in lieu of a mirror.

As he rose from picking up the shoe, an unexpected absence caught his eye. The map was gone. For months it had hung opposite the door, above a bookcase lined with old college texts and a copious collection of brushes and paint tubes. Now, in its stead, only thumbtack holes in the same not-quite-white (Kara called it Saffron Lace) that covered every wall in their Seattle apartment.

She brought the map home last fall, a laminated Rand-McNally depicting every country on earth in shaded relief. Accompanying it was a proposal to bicycle around the world. She wanted him to take a sabbatical—a laughable notion in the world of venture capital—and spend a year or three traveling.

Issues of Adventure Cyclist appeared in the bathroom soon after, borrowed travel guides rotated across her nightstand, and seemingly every conversation held an air of wanderlust, with Kara pining for small towns and country roads, campfire beers at sunset. Just the two of us, she’d say in a coquettish whisper. While we’re still young. Edward could only guess what spurred her restlessness and expected it to vanish as abruptly as it emerged.

The map hadn’t gone far. A quick search found it crunched into a football of discarded fantasy, punted behind a pile of bags and boxes. By the looks of things, she’d cleaned out the closet.

He unfurled the map, exposing a runaway squiggle of black ink. His eyes locked on the map’s northwest corner, where a star marked the departure point. Home. From there, the line dipped and danced across the northern United States and Canada before dashing south from London to Spain. Onward it went, around the Mediterranean to Greece, Turkey, and beyond. Edward followed the trail, past a who’s who of countries he knew nothing about, to China and Vietnam and a hand-drawn smiley face clear on the other edge of the poster, in Bali.

She’d given up on it. No. She gave up on me.

Review Tuesday: The Lord of Misrule by Kannan Feng - #magic #erotica #bdsm #ReviewTuesday

Lord of Misrule cover

THE LORD OF MISRULE by Kannan Feng
Circlet Press, 2010

Verity Fen is a handsome, wealthy, brilliant Prince of the House of Fen. At twenty four years old, he is an accomplished mage, the most promising scholar of aetheric arts at the ancient university of Atia Selene. He is also stubborn, conceited, careless and occasionally cruel. THE LORD OF MISRULE tells the tale of his unlikely relationship with his designated assistant Iskander - a relationship that upends the certainties in Verity's world, as his servant becomes his master and his master, his beloved.

This is a truly delicious novella. Don't be fooled by the Potter-esque echoes; Atia Selene is a lot darker and dirtier than Hogwarts! While Verity is immature enough to be occasionally annoying, Iskander is a magnificent character, the essential Dominant who loves, desires and educates his hapless submissive. His quiet confidence and intense focus, plus the sense that he has many secrets, combine to make Iskander irresistible.

The interactions between Verity and Iskander mirror the complexity of real world D/s relationships, in which motives mingles and a beating can be punishment, catharsis and entertainment all in one. The sex is extreme, varied and true, avoiding clichés typical of BDSM erotica. Like Verity, the reader never knows what Iskander is going to do -- and that is the way it should be.

Kannan Feng's mode of discourse is perfect for this fictional world, sufficiently archaic to carry the music of the past without sacrificing comprehensibility or indeed, currency. Atia Selene might be medieval, but it might just as well exist in the here and now.

The book is essentially a M/M erotic romance and thus the focus is on the interactions between Verity and Iskander. Unlike most romance, however, there is nothing predictable about this novella. The author weaves in several subplots and finely drawn subsidiary characters, keeping everything up in the air.

All in all, reading THE LORD OF MISRULE was both stimulating and satisfying. My only complaint is that I wish the book had been a full novel.

Review Tuesday: Spider by Aurelia T. Evans -- #ReviewTuesday #horror #erotica

Spider cover

Spider by Aurelia T. Evans

Totally Bound, 2018

There aren’t too many authors whose books I’ll buy on release day, but Aurelia T. Evans is one of them. When I saw the November 6th announcement in the Totally Bound newsletter, I hesitated only long enough to start up my special e-commerce computer in order to purchase a copy of her latest novel Spider.

Spider, the sixth book in the fascinating and disturbing Arcanium series, brings readers back to the alluring, terrifying circus created and nurtured by ancient jinni Bell Madoc. For Bell, Arcanium is simultaneously a plaything, a work of art and a cosmic mission. The appeal of his edgy big top performances and horrible but fascinating Oddity Row depends on his “people”: captive demons, human misfits, and unfortunate innocents whose unintentional wishes have bound them to the circus. Although Bell is capricious and can be cruel, he’s also exquisitely sensitive to the secrets that haunt visitors to Arcanium. The transformations he works upon those whom he entangles via their wishes make those secrets visible.

Elizabeth, the protagonist of Spider, lives her life in fear: fear of heights, fear of darkness, fear of insects, fear of disease. A member of a conservative, Amish-like religious cult (in fact, the illegitimate daughter of its prophet), in public she covers her hair and every inch of skin apart from her hands and her face. Like many unmarried daughters of the Petrosian Saints, she works as a nanny; Christian parents view the modest, sober, serious Petrosian women as ideal care-takers for their children.

A mistake leads Elizabeth to takes her charges on an afternoon outing to Arcaniuma mistake that will change her life forever. Trying to keep track of a teenager, a ten year old, a toddler and an infant, she idly wishes she had extra hands. Bell pounces upon her figurative statement. He has her abducted, brings her to Arcanium, and magically bestows another pair of arms and another pair of legs, turning her into his human spider. Then he installs her in his dreadful “fun house”, actually a prison he has created to punish evil-doers who have threatened Arcanium. Visitors assume the bloody horrors of the fun house are fake, but Elizabeth soon learns that every terror is real.

However, Bell has not brought Elizabeth into the circus for punishment, but to help her accept her fundamental nature. He knows that her many phobias mask a deeper fearthat she’ll be exposed as the elaborately tattooed porn performer her seductive, abusive former boyfriend had made of her. Indeed, as she adapts despite herself to eight-legged life in Arcanium, she gradually comes to understand that her true self is something even darker, wilder and more forbidden.

Totally Bound is a romance publisher, yet Ms. Evans’ books break every romance rule. That’s probably one reason why I love them. Here’s the publisher’s Reader Advisory for Spider:

This book contains plot-driven dubcon, monster sex, arachnophobia, public sex, extreme violence and horror-related gore, accounts of noncon and sex trafficking, double penetration, sex addiction, alcoholism and religious guilt.

Definitely not a book for the faint of heart! At the same time, none of this content is gratuitous, inserted just for shock value. Like many of the characters in the earlier Arcanium books, Elizabeth is broken inside. Strange as it might seem, her ordeals contribute to a sort of healing.

I find Arcanium’s mix of terror and eroticism refreshing and deeply enjoyable. Even after six books, Bell can still inspire my wonder. He wields incredible power, but he’s constrained by free will. His moral ambiguities fascinate me. He loves his people, yet also tortures them. He leads them to deeper self-understanding even as he selfishly uses them to increase the popularity of his circus. In this book, one character, with powers of his own, comments that Bell came into being before good and evil, that he is born of primordial chaos.

This book is the first in which Bell’s omnipotence is seriously challenged, by a mysterious outsider. I’m assuming that Ms. Evans is working on another volume that will explore this plot twist. I only hope it comes out soon!

My reviews of some of the earlier Arcanium books:
