Wednesday Book Hooks: The Last Amanuensis - #MRFWHooks #MFRWAuthor #sciencefiction

Book Hooks banner

Welcome to the Wednesday Book Hooks blog hop! Today I’m sharing an exclusive snippet from my most recent release, The LastAmanuensis. This story is basically dystopic sci fi with an erotic edge. Not the cheeriest thing I’ve ever written, but it’s extremely intense from an emotional perspective – and does have redemption at the end.

Blurb

Poetry is like bloodyou cant hold it back.

The Emperor has decreed that Reason will rule in his lands. Art and literature are banned in favor of military technology. The fearsome Preceptors prowl the capitol, arresting anyone who dares, even secretly, to engage in forbidden activities.

A former teacher and frustrated writer, Adele is grateful for her job as secretary to the enigmatic Professor. During the day, she transcribes his learned treatises on a vast range of topics. Then he calls her to his room one night, to give her a more difficult and intimate assignment, one that risks both their lives.

The Hook

First he served me tea, asking me, rather perfunctorily, about my education and previous employment. He was clearly pleased to hear about my scientific background. As soon as my cup was empty he took me upstairs, sat me at a typewriter, and gave me a quadrille notebook full of handwritten scrawls.

Type this, please.”

I peered at the page he indicated, which at first glance seemed totally illegible. I had no idea how I was going to decipher his chicken scratchings. My dismay must have shown on my face, for he laughed. Merriment transformed his stern countenance and for the first time, I saw the warmth that dwelt behind his intellectual's mask.

Don't worry. Take your time. It's far more important for you to be accurate, as these notebooks record my lifetime of research.” He adjusted the gas lamp so it brightly illuminated the chosen page. “I'll leave you to the work. I'll be downstairs in the front parlor.”

Grateful that he'd left me alone—for he definitely made me nervous—I set myself to the task he had imposed. At first I had significant difficulty but as I became more familiar with his writing style, the process became easier. Still, I needed nearly an hour to transcribe that single page.

He appeared delighted by the result. When he smiled I found him far less forbidding. I concluded from his reaction that I'd gotten the job. However, he had one more test for me.

Sitting me down at his desk, he handed me a sheet of linen notepaper, a pen and a bottle of ink. “Copy the first paragraph from this typescript,” he ordered. “I need a woman with a fair hand.”

After my ordeal at the typewriter, this assignment should have been trivially easy. However, instead of leaving me as he had before, he stood behind me, watching every stroke I made over my shoulder.

Rattled by his presence, unable to concentrate, I spoiled the first piece of paper. Shaking his head, he gave me another. “Last one, though. If you don't have the nerves to work under my scrutiny, you're not right for this job.”

Closing my eyes, I centered myself. Then I took up the pen and began to write. The ink flowed clean and smooth onto the page. After each sentence I forced myself to pause, to summon my ability to control the pen's trajectory.

The professor remained at my back, a presence I could not ignore. He was close enough that I could sense his body heat through my woolen gown. His breath stirred the stray hairs on my neck, below my chignon.

Irrationally, my nipples knotted under my chemise and the blood climbed into my cheeks. I had not been this close to a man in years.

Think about the pen, I told myself. Only the pen.

Finally, it was done. I released the air I'd been holding in my lungs, blotted the page, and handed it to him for his verdict.

Lovely,” he murmured. “Absolutely lovely.”

I glowed at that first praise—just as I do now.

Smut Sunday: Raw sex from Quarantine (#mm #glbtq #ChechenRainbow)

Smut Sunday Banner

For Smut Sunday, I have a very raw excerpt from my MM erotic romance Quarantine. This book is set in a concentration camp for confining gay men. Dylan is a prisoner; Rafe, a guard.

If this excerpt moves you, consider bidding in the charity auction to save threatened gay men in Chechnya. I’m offering two autographed print copies of this provocative book.

Meanwhile, when you’re finished with this post, head back to Smut Sunday Central for more sexy, smutty fun!

I know you watch me,” Dylan answered, all the brashness gone from his manner. “Well, I watch you, too.”

How…?” Rafe slid his fingers into Dylan’s reddish thatch and raised the inmate’s eyes to his own.

Easy. I programmed a guard to change the video routing. To feed the stream from here to the screen of my controller.”
So there were spy eyes in the control room, after all. “No…”

Yes. You know that hard-on of mine that you enjoy watching so much? That’s for you, man. When I jack off at night, I’m thinking of you.”

Rafe’s mind reeled. He snatched his hand from Dylan’s hair as though he’d been scalded.

Unlock the cuffs, man. Let me touch you. Let me show you how much I want you.”

Shut up, faggot!” The key burned a hole in his palm. His rigid dick strained against his zipper. He was tottering on the edge of a precipice, tempted to jump. Tempted to give in, to release the rash young man who’d delivered himself into Rafe’s hands.

But that would be suicide. The penalties for breaking quarantine were more severe than for murder.

He could take what he wanted, though. As long as Dylan was still cuffed, no one would really care. Rafe was H-negative—not queer, just horny from the months cooped up here with nothing but eP, no normal release. Oh, God, but he was horny!

The pressure from his boner made it difficult to undo his fly. When he finally managed to work the zipper down, his cock burst from its prison, bobbing like a fat black sausage in front of Dylan’s hungry eyes. Moisture welled up from the slit. Dylan licked his full lips as though dying for a taste.

Ah, yes…” the prisoner sighed, leaning forward and reaching out his tongue.

Rafe didn’t answer. He grabbed the back of Dylan’s head and plunged his dick into that wide-open mouth.

Heat. Wetness. The firm pressure of a muscular tongue, kneading his pulsing flesh. The tight seal of those ripe lips locked around his rod. Rafe struggled for control. The sensations that flooded him threatened to set him off before he even got started. He pulled back, popping out of Dylan’s mouth. The other man moaned in disappointment. Rafe drilled back in, hard and fast.

Dylan gagged and Rafe let up for an instant. Dylan tried his tricks again, swirling his tongue along the shaft, nipping at the head, sucking like a vacuum cleaner gone mad. Pleasure swirled through Rafe, tightening its grip, bringing his cum to a premature boil. Dylan’s mouth was a garden of delights, but Rafe didn’t want that. He didn’t want the inmate to give him anything. He wanted to take.

He slammed his cock down Dylan’s throat, feeling the bulb graze the palate. The man on his knees choked on the invading bulk. This time Rafe didn’t relent. He jerked his hips, driving his cock even deeper.

He felt Dylan surrender, giving up all pretence of will or control. The muscles spasming around his rod relaxed. The jaw went slack. Again and again, Rafe buried his dick in that brazen, laughing mouth, bruised and drooling now under Rafe’s assault.

In. Out. In. Rafe stepped closer to the kneeling inmate so that he could thrust deeper. His climax was on a slow burn now, building with each stroke. He could fuck this raw, sweet mouth forever.

Something brushed against his leg, a solid lump that sent a new thrill up his spine. Dylan’s cock was hard—hard because Rafe was using him like the fag pussy he was. Rafe had the cruel notion that he might stop, push the inmate away and deny him any pleasure. He saw himself, using his fist to bring himself over the edge, showering Dylan’s face with jism but leaving Dylan without relief.

He was too far gone to stop, though. The hot pleasure dancing in his flesh made him generous. Let the twink come, he thought. As if in answer, Dylan rubbed his crotch against Rafe’s knee awkward because of his bonds and the inescapable cock plundering his mouth.

The friction increased Rafe’s excitement. He seized Dylan’s head with both hands. His back arched. His balls tightened. Then everything exploded, sharp pleasure slicing through him like shrapnel. His cum flooded the other man’s mouth. The sensation of Dylan swallowing detonated new waves of delight.

Dylan’s cock pulsed. Rafe pulled away at the last instant, not wanting evidence of their games to stain his trousers. Dylan moaned as convulsions shook his body. Gradually he stopped shuddering. He sank back onto his heels, Rafe’s semen dribbling from the corners of his half-smiling mouth.

Review Tuesday: Dangerous Addictions by Naomi Bellina ( #reviewtuesday #dystopia #scifi @TheGoddessNaomi))

Dangerous Addictions cover

Dangerous Addictions by Naomi Bellina
Amazon KDP, 2016

Nothing gets my juices flowing like a well-written dystopian novel. I’m not sure why. Perhaps I find perverse satisfaction in visions of how much worse the world could be than it actually is. I also appreciate the imagination required to convincingly take today’s trends to their awful extremes, or to create new threats and horrors. Then there’s the pleasure to be gained from watching characters deal with the negative forces in their world. This can be exciting, even inspiring.

Or maybe I’ve just read too much Philip K. Dick.

By the time I was a few pages into Dangerous Addictions, Naomi Bellina’s new scifi thriller, I was hooked. Welcome to the Secure States of America, where all citizens have been quarantined after a devastating terrorist bio-attack that killed millions and destroyed the cognitive capabilities of millions more. Since the emergency, prior to the start of the book, the government has consolidated its control over the remaining population. Everyone is micro-chipped for identification purposes. No one can leave the country, though travel within its borders has been made simple and freeto distract people from the fact that those borders are actually prison walls.

Riley wants out. A brilliant hacker with a criminal past, he’s consumed by the desire to defeat the surveillance apparatus of the SSA. When he develops a mysterious ability to control electric fields, he realizes this power could provide the wedge he’s been looking for. However, exercising his talent wreaks havoc with his body. He needs to know more: where the power comes from, how to control it, how to keep it from destroying him.

As the only member of her family undamaged by the Malik virus, Danika is overwhelmed with survivor’s guiltguilt compounded by the belief that her own super power caused the accidental death of her fiancé. Danika can sense and control the muscles in other people’s bodies. Like Riley’s power, hers appeared suddenly a few years after The Annihilation. She wonders if she might be able to use her abilities to somehow heal the fractured minds of her mother and brother. That vision is what keeps her sane.

Riley’s and Danika’s paths cross as they are searching for others with similar unexplained powers. They join forces in an uneasy alliance, but there is little trust between them, as each one puts personal goals first. However, enemies are hot on the trail of the same information pursued by Riley and Danika, people and organizations who do not hesitate to use murder or torture to get what they want.

Dangerous Addictions is not a relaxing book. Ms. Bellina ramps up the tension, as Riley and Danika try to hide in a world where constant scrutiny by the authorities is the norm. The book moves quickly, from one crisis (and one city) to another. Pieces of the puzzle gradually fall into place, but I was a bit disappointed to discover that much remains unexplained by the end of the book, presumably because this is the first in a series.

Both protagonists are intriguing, multi-faceted characters. Danika’s impulsiveness gets her into trouble, but she’s rescued by her quick wit and a brazen willingness to do whatever needs to be done to survive. Riley’s brooding cynicism is offset by a streak of kindness that embarrasses him. There’s a spark of physical attraction between them from the start, but they don’t act on their impulses for a long time.

Most of what I’ve read by Ms. Bellina would be categorized as erotic romance. This book doesn’t fit neatly into that genre (or any single genre, really). When Riley and Danika finally get together, the sexual tension is resolved, but not the emotional conflicts. The treatment was far more realistic than in most romance.

Overall, I really enjoyed Dangerous Addictions, though I have to say, I’m not sure where the title comes from. The series title seems much more appropriate: “Messed-Up Heroes”. That describes both Riley and Danika pretty well.

(I freely chose to review this book, having read other work by the same author.)

Bringer of Chaos Release Blitz! (#scifi #contest #dystopian @kayelleallen)

A major publishing event! Today’s release day for Kayelle Allen’s amazing new dystopian scifi novel Bringer of Chaos: The Origins ofPietas. If you’ve been noticing Kayelle’s gorgeous posters and enigmatic quotes over the past few weeks, I’m sure you’re as intrigued as I am.

Read on for more information on this ground breaking book. And don’t miss Kayelle’s giveaway at the end!

Blurb

Two enemy warriors: one human, one immortal. Different in belief, alike in spirit, marooned together on an alien world.

Imprisoned and in isolation over a year without food or water, the immortal Pietas survives. Though broken in body, his intellect and will are intact, thanks to Six, the special ops warrior who captured him, but kept him sane. The warrior had no hand in his deprivation and, like Pietas, was betrayed by his own kind. When Pietas is abandoned on an alien world with nothing but his honor--and Six--he must find and rejoin other immortal exiles. After centuries of war, Pietas detests humans and kills them on sight, but he is too damaged to continue on his own. Though he despises needing help, he allows Six to nurture and restore him to full strength, and then accompany him. As they cross the planet together on foot, the immortal begins to wonder if he has found his first human friend, or if Six is loyal only because Pietas could keep the others from tearing him to shreds. This human will either be his closest living friend, or the one whose betrayal will trigger all-out vengeance by the most powerful immortal ever born.

Immortal. Warrior. Outcasts. Traitors took everything. Except their honor.

You are human. Unworthy.
A foreword from Pietas

This book you hold is being presented as fiction, but it did happen. It is as real as the air you breathe. It is not a first-person story, but it does follow my point of view.
I would never have allowed a human to know these things, but a friend persuaded me there can be no vengeance unless those in the wrong know what they did. When one has wronged another, one must face the consequences.

Having been persuaded to tell the story, I now allow it to be placed into your hands. I want you to know the truth. Why? Because other Ultras have hidden the truth. Buried it beneath fables and false retellings, as if you were a child unable to bear harsh reality. Unwilling to face the consequences of what your kind has done.

Above all, I will not lie to you.

When I come for you, I want the satisfaction of seeing your regret for what your ancestors did to my kind. I want to see your fear, and taste your terror.

This is no horror story. It's merely science fiction. Tell yourself it is only fable, if that will help you sleep. By all means, human, do sleep.

Read this, if you dare to know the truth.

~ Pietas

Prologue

In the twenty-seventh century on Earth, genslaves were supreme among all humanity's genetic creations. They fulfilled man's every desire. They recuperated from disease and injury so fast they were all but immortal. Their strength far exceeded man's. Specific, ingrained abilities limited upward and lateral movement among the servant classes, keeping genslaves in jobs with no chance of advancement.

Bred to require little rest, labor-genslaves performed menial and repetitive tasks, with enough intelligence to work, but not enough to aspire beyond their station. Warriors possessed unmeasured strength and massive size. They fought humanity's wars, died so man didn't have to suffer, and were reborn to fight again. The physically weaker classes had more intelligence. Healer-genslaves obtained vast amounts of skill in medicine and designed cures for disease. Artists created beauty. Nurturers and teachers cared for humanity's children. Scientist-genslaves designed additional genslaves, to make man's life even more pleasant. All classes were created with genetic shackles of obedience, making them content to remain subservient.

While humanity relaxed, secure in a position of power, genslave-scientists created a new order of beings with free will. It will be argued through the ages whether the creation arose from faulty programming, or a desire for freedom, but the new creatures were not hampered by genetic restraints.

They took the name Ultra, and did as they pleased. Ultras were brains and brawn. No matter how difficult the problem, Ultras solved it. No matter how horrific or grisly their wounds, Ultras survived. Disease did not touch them. Starvation did not stop them. Even death did not hold them long.

The creation of Ultras changed everything.

When Ultras demanded freedom, humans claimed them soulless, inferior, unworthy, and undeserving of equality. Humans tried to silence them, and when that failed, punished them. The Ultras seized their liberty by force. Emboldened by the Ultras' success, other genslaves rebelled, and began calling themselves Ultras as well. The First Cycle of Wars devastated half the galaxy. In the Terran Crescent and the Colonies of Man, power tilted toward Ultras. They ruled the starways. Ultras tightened restrictions and limited trade, allowing mankind meager freedoms, and no more mercy than man had shown them. Humans served, subservient to their former slaves.

Not all genslaves wanted war. Some concealed their genetic differences and abilities, and lived among humans--as human. The rumor that genslaves hid among them spawned the Human Pure movement. Purges wiped out non-human traits and enhanced sensory perceptions. Humanity weakened itself by outlawing genetic healing or correction. They identified anything and anyone considered unnatural. Anyone different hid it or faced death by fire, from which Ultras could not revive. For the human underground, the weapon of choice became a flamethrower.

Among Ultras, leadership arose that considered humans redeemable. They sought to allow humans more freedom, and give them a voice in their own government. They hoped a kinder relationship would bring an end to galaxy-wide conflict. They hoped peace would halt senseless death and destruction, foster growth, and increase trade.

In 4536 AD, after centuries of war, Ultras and humans met to discuss a truce.

But that is according to legend. Here, you will learn the truth.
