Review Tuesday: Dangerous Addictions by Naomi Bellina ( #reviewtuesday #dystopia #scifi @TheGoddessNaomi))

Dangerous Addictions cover

Dangerous Addictions by Naomi Bellina
Amazon KDP, 2016

Nothing gets my juices flowing like a well-written dystopian novel. I’m not sure why. Perhaps I find perverse satisfaction in visions of how much worse the world could be than it actually is. I also appreciate the imagination required to convincingly take today’s trends to their awful extremes, or to create new threats and horrors. Then there’s the pleasure to be gained from watching characters deal with the negative forces in their world. This can be exciting, even inspiring.

Or maybe I’ve just read too much Philip K. Dick.

By the time I was a few pages into Dangerous Addictions, Naomi Bellina’s new scifi thriller, I was hooked. Welcome to the Secure States of America, where all citizens have been quarantined after a devastating terrorist bio-attack that killed millions and destroyed the cognitive capabilities of millions more. Since the emergency, prior to the start of the book, the government has consolidated its control over the remaining population. Everyone is micro-chipped for identification purposes. No one can leave the country, though travel within its borders has been made simple and freeto distract people from the fact that those borders are actually prison walls.

Riley wants out. A brilliant hacker with a criminal past, he’s consumed by the desire to defeat the surveillance apparatus of the SSA. When he develops a mysterious ability to control electric fields, he realizes this power could provide the wedge he’s been looking for. However, exercising his talent wreaks havoc with his body. He needs to know more: where the power comes from, how to control it, how to keep it from destroying him.

As the only member of her family undamaged by the Malik virus, Danika is overwhelmed with survivor’s guiltguilt compounded by the belief that her own super power caused the accidental death of her fiancé. Danika can sense and control the muscles in other people’s bodies. Like Riley’s power, hers appeared suddenly a few years after The Annihilation. She wonders if she might be able to use her abilities to somehow heal the fractured minds of her mother and brother. That vision is what keeps her sane.

Riley’s and Danika’s paths cross as they are searching for others with similar unexplained powers. They join forces in an uneasy alliance, but there is little trust between them, as each one puts personal goals first. However, enemies are hot on the trail of the same information pursued by Riley and Danika, people and organizations who do not hesitate to use murder or torture to get what they want.

Dangerous Addictions is not a relaxing book. Ms. Bellina ramps up the tension, as Riley and Danika try to hide in a world where constant scrutiny by the authorities is the norm. The book moves quickly, from one crisis (and one city) to another. Pieces of the puzzle gradually fall into place, but I was a bit disappointed to discover that much remains unexplained by the end of the book, presumably because this is the first in a series.

Both protagonists are intriguing, multi-faceted characters. Danika’s impulsiveness gets her into trouble, but she’s rescued by her quick wit and a brazen willingness to do whatever needs to be done to survive. Riley’s brooding cynicism is offset by a streak of kindness that embarrasses him. There’s a spark of physical attraction between them from the start, but they don’t act on their impulses for a long time.

Most of what I’ve read by Ms. Bellina would be categorized as erotic romance. This book doesn’t fit neatly into that genre (or any single genre, really). When Riley and Danika finally get together, the sexual tension is resolved, but not the emotional conflicts. The treatment was far more realistic than in most romance.

Overall, I really enjoyed Dangerous Addictions, though I have to say, I’m not sure where the title comes from. The series title seems much more appropriate: “Messed-Up Heroes”. That describes both Riley and Danika pretty well.

(I freely chose to review this book, having read other work by the same author.)

What is it about werewolves that makes us squirm?

By Naomi Bellina (Guest Blogger)

Paranormal romance is a popular genre. Those who read it love everything from vampires to angels, from demons to fairies. Bring on the supernatural hotties. Why do we crave these mysterious creatures and their worlds? For me, it's nice to think there are beings out there, other than boring old humans. Life can get dull and often painful and at the end of the day, it's nice to escape to a whole different world where anything can happen. Yep, that's right. In a paranormal story, the laws of reality don't apply. Which is one reason it's so much fun to write! The only limit is my imagination.

I'm working on a series about werewolves and werecats and I wondered, why do we find these beasts so sexy? There must be a reason we're so drawn to these creature who are human but can shift to a wild animal. Here are my top five reasons to love werewolves:

1. We can be as wild as we want with a werewolf. Since they run around on all fours and hunt small animals, anything we do will be tame compared to that. Leaving our underwear on the floor, burping, yelling across the house to each other, letting the leg hair grow long in the winter, all okay.

2. We don't have to pick at our food or have perfect table manners when eating. In fact, werewolves enjoy a woman with a good appetite and an extra few pounds on her. More to love.

3. They're powerful. Women are drawn to strong men because we know they will protect us and our offspring. As long as the guy doesn't go overboard with macho-ism, strength is sexy.

4. Some of them are tortured. They don't want to be a creature of darkness. When we love them, we help them accept themselves for what they are.

5. They do it like an animal. Yeah, like an animal.

My hero in Ruled by the Moon, Dylan, fights his animal nature since he has a difficult time controlling his wolf during sex and he's harmed a woman once while trying to make love. Morgan has a way to help him, if he'd stop being so stubborn and let her.

Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy this excerpt from Ruled by the Moon.

Blurb
A psychic vet, a secretive werewolf, a menace stalking the shifters. Welcome to Nocturne.

Dylan is a werewolf with a problem. He shifts at the new moon as well as at the full moon. He was born a werewolf, not made like most shape-changers and due to these unique traits he's avoided joining a pack and has given up hope of having a normal life. Morgan is a veterinarian, ready to be on her own for a good long time after leaving a cheating, spineless husband. She has a plan for her life that doesn't include a bossy, furry man.

Both are drawn to Nocturne, a town filled with magic due to a strong convergence of ley lines in the area. Morgan and Dylan recognize a connection when they meet, but neither one is looking for romance. After a harrowing encounter with a panther shape-shifter, they must combine forces and work together to uncover a menace that threatens the town. If they can learn to trust each other and let their guard down, they have a chance to solve the mystery and open the door to love.

Excerpt

You really should get that lock on your door fixed.”

Morgan stood in the kitchen, leaning casually against the counter, not looking overly concerned to have a shotgun pointed at her.

You really should knock and not sneak up on people.”

I did knock. No one answered. I came in.”

He lowered the weapon. “I leave the door unlocked a lot. Most people around here do. It’s not an invitation to enter my home.” Dylan’s heart pounded. She looked unbelievably hot. The air in the room danced with electricity and a shiver of wanting ran through him.

How about that bulge in your pants? Is that an invitation?”

Aware that his cock was standing at attention, Dylan called up every ounce of self-control he possessed. The very worst thing in the world that could happen right now was for him to be close to this woman.

Morgan, you need to leave. Now. It’s not safe for you to be here.”

Smiling seductively, she walked toward him. He backed up until they were both in the dining room. Her eyes sparked as she undid the tie on her coat and dropped it to the floor. He moaned. The reality of her naked body was better than his imagination. Full breasts, with brown jutting nipples, a little roundness to her belly and hips that begged for his hands to hold them. She didn’t shave herself bald, revealing the hair on her head to be her true color.

Look, I know you think this is a bad idea, but I’d really like a chance to prove it’s not. I know you want me. There was enough fire in that kiss to ignite a volcano. Come on, let’s give this a whirl and see what happens.”

Smiling, she walked to him and brushed her breasts against his chest then leaned her pelvis close, rubbing against his pants. The silk material was so thin, he could feel her coarse pubic hair on his stiff cock. Dylan closed his eyes. He knew he needed to get the hell out of that room but he couldn’t move. His body ached with desire.

Please, Morgan, don’t do this.”

How about I do this, then?”

Reaching through the opening of his pants, she grabbed his cock and slowly stroked it with her fingertips.

Damn, you feel good. I’m so ready for you.” She put his hand between her legs.

He could feel her heat and almost taste her wet juice in his mouth. Saliva formed and a powerful rush of energy roared through his body. Don’t, don’t, don’t! His mind told him to push her away and run like hell, while every cell in his body longed to take her.

Just a little, I can have just a little. I can control it.

Calling up every ounce of strength he possessed, he pushed the animal back and wrapped his arms around her, buying his nose in her hair. That smell! It was more intoxicating than his whiskey. As his body made contact with hers, heat seared through him in a path right to his soul. She fit perfectly, as though she were designed for him. His heart leapt, and for just a moment, he thought it was going to work. He was going to make love to this enchanting woman. He was going to see his hunger reflected in her eyes, was going to feel her move with him in that ancient dance of desire. He was going to wake up to her smile in the morning.

Then he brushed his hand across her bare back and his nail dug into her skin.

Morgan yelped and pulled away from him.

Ow! That hurt!”

Shit. It was not going to work. He couldn’t hold it back, he was going to change.

Get out of my house, now!” he ordered

Morgan backed away slowly. “Why? What’s going on?”

Get out!” He turned his back to her.

He stood, panting, trying desperately to stop the shift but it was no use. In a few moments the beast would be in control.

A Private Girl in a Public World

By Naomi Bellina

Hello everyone! I'm delighted to be with you today. A big hug to Lisabet for hosting me and for patiently working with my schedule. We're all so busy! It's a challenge to get everything done. Work, family, the daily chores of life eat up the hours in a day. For us authors and anyone else who has their own business, there's far too little time to do the actual job we love to do, let alone the marketing that is required these days.

If I'd known how much self-promotion was involved with being a writer, I would have run, screaming, in the opposite direction of my keyboard. Holy cow, how am I supposed to do all this? I'm told I should have a blog that I post to regularly, post on other blogs, on Facebook, Twitter, Goodreads, Pinterest, Yahoo groups and other social media sites. Since it's bad manners to post and run, interaction is also required at each spot. Now, I love talking to people with similar interests and I really do enjoy virtual conversation, but at the end of some ass-kicking work days, I'm often talked out. I just want to bury my nose in a book and lose myself. Some days I don't feel like being civil, much less social. Time constraints also limit how much chatting I can do. Since my EDJ does not involve proximity to a computer, I can't fire off a quick sentence or two throughout the day.

Another aspect I struggle with is how much of me to reveal. I'm a private person and disclose the intimacies of my life with very few people. Now, however, I'm expected to bare my soul for all to see. This practice is at odds with my comfort level, but I realize social media is about, well, being social. On Facebook, I recently shared the sorrow of a virtual friend over the death of her dog. Having recently lost my beloved cat, I could understand her grief and help to ease her pain. When my father and my cat died within a few months of each other, the outpouring of love and sympathy I received warmed my heart. I was happy to have my virtual friends and glad I overcame my shyness and shared a little piece of my life.

So, what's a private girl to do in this very public world? It's been a challenge to come up with a solution but I've finally found comfortable ways to interact in the various virtual environments.

1. Facebook - This is my favorite place to hang out. I believe we all need more humor in our lives, so I look for funny posts, save them, and share throughout the week. If I have an event going on, I post that also. I use the scheduling feature which makes posting easy. Since I write under a pen name, I keep my writing and personal FB separate. My family would strongly disapprove and some of my work clients would run screaming in horror if they knew about my 'other' self.

2. Twitter - This is the media I've found the most difficult to use, but I finally read a tip that makes sense to me. I gather news stories about romance and love and post those links. I retweet my buddies and other interesting tweets and then every so often, I promote my books in what I consider a non-annoying fashion.

3. Pinterest - I love this one since I'm such a visual person but have not yet had time to get too involved with it. An avenue to pursue in the near future.

4. Blogs - For my own blog I started Tuesday Treats, where each week I post about something that makes me happy. This is where I share the most personal bits of my life. I enjoy putting up pictures I've taken, hoping they will reveal a little about my charming personality to my readers without boring them. I occasionally have guests at my place and post on other blogs. I do love being invited to visit!

So, I'm gradually learning to overcome my shyness and work with this strange new concept called social media. Wish me luck and if you have similar feelings about sharing your life, I'd love to hear them.

Now, about my latest book, Into the Magic. In this excerpt, my heroine, Star, is giving in to her desires. She's been shy most of her life but since finding out she has magical powers, she's gained confidence and is less hesitant about going after what she wants.

Thank you for reading my post and a big *mwah* to Lisabet for having me today.

Into the Magic
Book two in the The Adventures of Star Lite Series

Good and evil, love and lust. Add magic to the mix and watch the sparks fly.

Her every sense tells her they are meant to be together, yet he has disappeared. Certain he's in danger, she tracks him down and they meet in Las Vegas, where emotions flare and flames ignite.

But Adam must complete a mysterious mission and sends her away. She uses the time waiting for Adam to study with Tristan, a passionate magician with secrets of his own. As Star’s powers are unlocked, she questions the rulings of the authoritarians who control magic.

Against Tristan and Adam’s warnings, a premonition moves her to go back to Vegas. There, a new facet of her power puts her life in peril. For protection, Tristan, Adam and Star engage in a sizzling ménage ritual. Join Star as she opens her heart and soul to love, and continues her journey into the magic.

Excerpt

Damn, he looked fine sitting there in the glow of the candle. She took another sip of wine, and her previous convictions about Adam faded. All she could think of was the incredibly sexy man across from her. Her pulse pounded and moisture formed between her legs, but her conscience nudged her, reminding her that a sexual encounter with Tristan would be trouble. It could end their working relationship and cause problems with Adam.

So what? I’ll get a new teacher. Adam isn’t here. He sent me away and hasn’t contacted me. Right now, I want a lover.

I really don’t know that much about you. We’re always concentrating on lessons when you’re here. Tell me something you like to do in your free time.” Star struggled to keep her voice steady.

Well, I like to kayak, I like to cook, and garden. Now, tell me something you like to do, when you’re not visiting other worlds.”

Come here and sit next to me. We can watch the fireworks out of the window.”

Tristan hesitated a moment. Heat rose in her body, and the desire to touch him was overpowering. She poured more wine into her glass and drank. Something loose and wild raged through her, a voracious demon that demanded to be fed. The atmosphere in the room was charged, like the air before a thunderstorm. Her pulse raced, her breathing quickened. She crossed her legs as waves of pleasure throbbed low in her core. She was certain Tristan could sense her excitement, yet still he moved with care, coming to sit on the end of the couch.

Frankly, I’ve been a stick in the mud for the past two years. I haven’t been doing anything much, reading and watching television. Ever since I got back from Porrima, though, I’ve been thinking about some things I want to do. Like this.”

Star scooted over and kissed Tristan. Only their lips touched, gently, and as soon as they connected, she was lost. An explosion of colour filled her mind. Her heart raced. He held perfectly still, at first, then put both hands on her cheeks and angled his head to deepen the kiss. The colours swirled into pulsating patterns.

Pulling away, Tristan leant back and looked at Star, breathing hard.

Are you sure this is what you want? It could make our study time awkward.”

I know, but it could make it fun. It could open up new avenues of exploration. Didn’t I see a chapter in that book of yours about sexual power?”

Sex can add to the power of magic, but it can also distract the user.”

Okay, I’m ready to get distracted.”

Star slowly pulled her blouse off, and smiled as she saw Tristan’s pupils dilate, hearing his sharp intake of breath. She stood and removed her skirt, then held out her hand to him.

Your turn.”

Tristan rose and, unable to wait any longer, Star began to unbutton his shirt. He grabbed her hands and put them to her side.

Wait.”

The cool breeze from the air conditioner, along with her growing excitement, hardened her nipples into points that poked through her thin bra. Tristan cupped one breast and ran a thumb across the hard peak. Star gasped and shivered. She wanted to take him right there. On the couch, the floor, the kitchen table. Desire burned through her like a flame.

With a growl, she pulled his shirt out of his pants and ripped it apart, sending buttons flying. She started to unfasten his pants, but again he pushed her hands away and quickly did it himself, sliding them to the floor then stepping out of them. He sat on the couch, shoved the coffee table away with his foot, and took hold of her hips. Looking up at her with eyes gone dark with desire, he brought her in close and buried his face between her legs. He slid her lace panties to the side, and his tongue probed her lips, lightly at first, then harder, licking the slick folds inside and out.

With one finger, he began to caress her clit, stroking it lightly, rhythmically.

The sound of the booming fireworks matched her pounding pulse. Heat like she’d never felt before ran through her veins and set her soul on fire. What was this? Not the slow, simmering burn she’d felt when she and Adam held their bodies together. This was something riotous, something unsettling. Her nerve endings danced, like the sparklers they’d lit at the party.

Tristan’s fingers dug into her flesh. His tongue dived deeper, and he took her swollen bud into his mouth and sucked. She moaned deep in her throat and arched her pelvis into his face. She had to take him, now. The desire to ride him, to push him on his back and straddle him, to fuck him for hours, was overwhelming. Panting, she wiped a thin line of sweat from her brow.

Something was wrong. This feeling, this deep lust, it was dark, wicked, consuming her. If they went any further, she would fall into an abyss of shadows. Though her body vibrated with need, she knew this was not how it should feel.

With a strangled cry, Star pushed Tristan away and took a step back.

Stop.”

Stop?” Tristan looked up, his voice thick with arousal.

I don’t want to do this anymore.”

What the hell?” Tristan stood abruptly. “Don’t play with me. You’re the one who started this.”

I know, but I changed my mind. I want you to go now.”

Star put her hands on her hips, aware of her nearly naked state.
