Charity Sunday: Habitat for Humanity - #Shelter #SweatEquity #CharitySunday

Welcome to the final Charity Sunday for 2019!

Lots of us go home for the holidays in December. That got me thinking about the whole idea of “home”. What would life be like without safe, comfortable shelter? A roof over our heads, doors to keep out intruders, windows to view the world?

There are way too many people in today’s world who don’t have this kind of home – people who live in shacks or tents, shanty town slums or abandoned garbage bins. At this time of gathering together, I’ve chosen to support Habitat for Humanity, an organization dedicated to building homes for those who need them.

You may already be aware of Habitat’s work. They work through local affiliates, volunteers who raise money, acquire materials, and work with the intended residents to build new shelter. What makes Habitat special, though, is that it doesn’t build homes for the people who will occupy them. Habitat builds with those people. A core concept in Habitat’s approach is the idea of “sweat equity”. To receive help from Habitat, you have to be willing to invest your own labor. You must make a commitment, learn the necessary skills, put in the time and the energy to help create the home of which you dream.

I really love this notion. People value the fruits of their own efforts. Furthermore, Habitat’s beneficiaries, by learning how to build, can help others in their communities do the same.

Anyway, for every comment I receive on this post, I’ll donate $2 to Habitat.

Meanwhile, here’s an excerpt from my holiday erotic romance Almost Home, which takes place in a New England home very much like the one where I used to live.

The mug of tea cupped in her hands chased the last bit of numbness from Suzanne’s fingers. Propped up on a couch in Gino’s spacious kitchen, swaddled in quilts, she watched him toss another log on the roaring fire. He moved with easy grace, a man at home in his own skin.

The heat from the blaze matched the desire simmering in her belly. She felt her body expanding, unfolding. Her tension and fear evaporated. In their place came delicious comfort edged with arousal. Gino poked at the glowing timbers piled on the hearth. She admired the line of his broad back and the curve of his buttocks under the stretched denim.

Gino,” she called softly. “Come here.”

He gave her a smile that rivalled the blaze he tended. “Suzanne?” He sauntered over to sit beside her half-prone form. “How are you feeling?”

Much better, thanks to you. I don’t know what would have happened if you hadn’t come along.” She grasped his hand, entwining their fingers. He laid his other hand on top. It might have just been a gesture of friendship, but it sent sparks swirling through her. Her nipples tightened into hungry knots.

You know, Suzy, I had this strange feeling. Jack and I had just settled down to our annual game of chess—one of our traditions—when suddenly I knew I had to leave. I told them I had a headache, and actually, it felt a bit that way—some kind of urgent need pounding in my skull. When I saw the car burrowed into the snow bank, I knew right away that it was you.”

I’m so grateful.” He was close enough now that she could smell him, wood smoke with an undercurrent of wintergreen. “I was pretty scared.”

You should have let me drive you,” Gino scolded. “But then you always were stubborn.” He leaned back, away from her, and released her hand. Suzanne wanted to pull him closer. Why did he hesitate? Didn’t he know she wanted him?

I’ve got to be back in California by Monday morning,” she murmured. “Important meeting. But I don’t suppose there’s any possibility of getting to my hotel tonight, is there?”

Not a snowball’s chance in hell,” Gino replied triggering a laugh that relieved some of the strain. “The governor’s called for a state of emergency. The Mass Pike is closed to all but emergency vehicles. Latest forecasts say we’re going to get two feet.” He caught her eyes as though trying to read her thoughts. “Lady, you’re stuck here for the foreseeable future.”

Suzanne reached for him. “In that case, why don’t you kiss me?”

He allowed her to bring his lips within inches of hers. Then he stopped her. “Are you sure? I got the idea back at the party that I made you nervous. That you still weren’t interested in being more than friends.”

You do make me nervous—but in a good way. I feel like a teenager when you’re around, hot and bothered, excited and embarrassed. You’ve always made me feel that way.”

And that’s good?”

I’m beginning to think so. Why don’t you kiss me and we can find out?”

He didn’t need a second invitation. Sliding his hands under the blankets, he gathered her to his chest and planted his firm lips on hers. Even though she was expecting this kiss, it still shocked her. Sudden heat swept through her like a forest fire. Any last reservations burned to a crisp. He took possession of her mouth, scarcely allowing her to take a breath. Meanwhile his hands roved over her curves, sending waves of electric pleasure shimmering down to her sex.

The velvet transmitted every brush of his fingertips. She might as well have been naked. It hardly mattered that she was wearing a bra or panties. He rolled one brazen nipple between his thumb and forefinger, waking tremors in her clit. She gasped into his mouth. He cupped her damp mound through her clothing, his lips still glued to hers. She spread her legs, begging for more, and he obliged, rubbing the velvet back and forth along the groove of her pussy.

His groping made her increasingly desperate. As though he read her thoughts, he broke the kiss. “I want to see you naked,” he breathed. “I always have.”

She flung the quilts away and pulled her dress over her head in one fluid motion. He watched, clearly fascinated, eyes gleaming in the firelight. Reaching behind her, she unhooked her crimson bra and set her ample breasts free. She cupped them like an offering, her own hands feeling almost as wonderful on her flesh as his. He fastened his mouth on one taut nub, pinching the other. The sight of his dark head suckling was almost enough to make her come. Gino, she thought, buffeted by a confusing mix of emotions. After all this time.

Don’t forget to leave a comment; every one means another $2 for Habitat. And I hope you will visit the other blogs participating today.

Happy Holidays to you and yours!

Mistletoe Kisses - #Mistletoe #Kisses #HolidayRomance

Mistletoe leaves and berries

I received my first French kiss in front of a Christmas tree, from the man who would later become my first lover. I can recall the scene surprisingly well. I was fourteen, staying with my aunt over the holidays. Although she was born Jewish and at time was a disciple of an Indian guru, she had for some reason set up a tree in the living room. I remember that the twinkle of the lights twining through the branches was the only illumination. The moment has a silvery glow in my recollection. P. encircled me with his arms and pulled me against his chest, while planting his lips firmly on mine. I had no idea how to react.

Then suddenly his tongue was in my mouth. The intimacy of that sensation shocked me. I guess I knew about French kisses, academically speaking, but the reality was like nothing I'd imagined. I felt excited and scared and very confused, not knowing what to do exactly, but really, really wanting to get it right. He held me there, exploring me, for what seemed like hours. Afterward, in my room, I was so high I thought I'd float right off the bed. He wanted me - me, shy and awkward as I was, with my heavy-framed glasses, plump thighs and frizzy hair... As for P., he was as beautiful as an angel, pale as snow, with hair like spun gold and sea-blue eyes. And he smelled so good... that's one thing I remember, incense and sweat and peppermint from the candy canes we'd been eating, strange, male, but so delicious...

Once I had dredged up that memory, my thoughts turned to other kisses, midnight kisses as the old year slipped away and kisses under the mistletoe.

I found myself curious about the mistletoe kissing tradition. Mistletoe, it turns out, has had spiritual or magical significance for millenia. It is associated with the divine male essence, hence potency and virility (possibly because the waxy white berries resemble drops of semen). The plant is also entangled in a resurrection myth.

An old Norse tale recounts the birth of the god Baldur, son of Frigga and Odin, the king of the gods. A prophecy regarding Baldur's premature death led Frigga to extract a promise from every plant and animal on earth, that they would never harm her son. Somehow, however, she omitted the mistletoe plant and when Baldur reached glorious manhood, Loki tricked Baldur's blind brother into slaying him with an arrow fashioned from mistletoe. Baldur was dragged into the underworld, but like Osiris and Persephone, was brought back to life by the efforts of a loving woman (in this case his mother).

After Baldur's resurrection, Frigga declared mistletoe to be thenceforth the plant of peace. None of this, of course, explains why mistletoe has become a license to kiss, although the links with the solstice season are clear. Mistletoe is evergreen, symbolizing everlasting life. Pre-Christian cultures associate midwinter with the death and rebirth of the sun. These themes continue to echo in the Christmas story itself.

Apparently American author Washington Irving wrote about the mistletoe kiss tradition as early as 1820. This suggests that it has been practiced for a good deal longer. Most of the sources I found pointed to Scandinavia as the original source of the custom.

However they originated, kisses under the mistletoe retain a sense of mischievous transgression. It doesn't matter who you are, how old you are, to whom you're married. If someone catches you beneath that sprig of emerald leaves and snowy berries, you must submit to his or her kiss. To resist is considered to bring terrible luck. And who knows what you'll discover, mouth to mouth, breath to breath? The potent magic of the Druid's sacred plant might lead to ecstasy - or even love.

I'll leave you with a literary kiss under the mistletoe, from my recently released holiday tale Almost Home

The kiss caught her off guard.

One moment Suzanne was standing in the doorway to Helena’s den, scanning the occupants and wondering if she knew anyone at all at this party. The next moment someone twirled her around and fastened a pair of firm lips on hers. Out of instinct or habit, she closed her eyes. The darkness heightened her other senses. Powerful arms circled her body and pulled her against a fuzzy male chest. Her partner’s scent rose around her, a complex mix of soap and musk, evergreen and wood smoke. His tongue teased the seam where her lips met and she let him enter, her self-protective reflexes dulled by his warmth and the glass of merlot she’d downed on her arrival. His mouth tasted of eggnog and candy canes, appropriately seasonal. He was delicious, in fact—not just his mouth but the quiet confidence of his probing tongue, the sculpted muscle she felt under his sweater, his bold hands wandering across her back to her buttocks. She hadn’t enjoyed a kiss like this in a long time.

She’d felt chilled and tense ever since her plane touched down in frigid Boston but now her muscles began to unknot. He was a miniature sun, melting her, turning her languid and dreamy. She clutched at his solid form and returned his kiss, trading heat for heat. Tropical colours paraded behind her eyelids—fuschia, lime, peach, and aqua—shimmering like the water in her pool back home. She even began to perspire, her long-sleeved velvet dress suddenly too warm for comfort.

He pulled her full hips against his lean ones. A tell-tale lump, wonderfully hard, pressed against her belly. Her panties and tights dampened, too.

Normally she would have resisted but stress and alcohol made her susceptible. She allowed the kiss to lengthen and deepen, sinking into the pure pleasure of it.

Missing Winter - #snow #NewEngland #nostalgia #99cents

More than a decade ago, I moved from a rural town in New England (the region where I grew up) to a city in the tropics. For the most part, the relocation has been tremendously beneficial. I love my adopted country, my new profession, and the fact that I have more financial security than I ever had in the U.S. Urban life agrees with me. I much prefer to walk or take public transit than to use my own car. Although I didn’t move for the climate, I mostly enjoy the freedom of wearing relatively few clothes and sandals, even to work. Still there are times when I really do miss my original home—especially around the winter holidays.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t miss the hassle of preparing for winter: getting out the heavy sweaters, coats and boots; installing storm windows; arranging for the driveway to be plowed; installing snow tires and checking the anti-freeze. I’m grateful to be spared the nail-biting terror of trying to drive on an ice-slicked road. New England is famous for two particularly unpleasant kinds of winter weather, slush and freezing rain. I’ve had enough of both for one lifetime!

However, winter in New England sometimes has a unique, transcendent beauty that isn’t matched by anything here in my new home. After a snowfall, there’s a hush, a peace that comes over everything, soothing and freeing. I associate this tranquil feeling with the holidays, even though Christmas weather in New England is just as likely to involve leaden skies and bare ground, or chilly rain.

Being a writer, of course, I can indulge my nostalgia in my stories...

Suzanne had never seen stars so bright. The night sky was a black bowl above them, studded with blazing jewels. The snow blanketing the yard gleamed with some faint inner radiance. At the edges of the property, evergreens clustered in deeper shadow like silent sentinels.

She took a deep breath of the crystalline air, so cold and sharp it hurt her lungs. The tiny hairs inside her nose stood on end. Her earlobes felt like icicles. From the neck down, though, she was bathed in delicious warmth. The bizarre contrast almost made her giggle.

Smooth, hard muscle brushed her thigh. After a moment, roving fingers skittered across her lap and burrowed into her pubic fur. A fiery bolt of lust struck her core.

That’s a bit from my holiday MMF ménage tale Almost Home. There’s a lot more winter nostalgia in that tale (entwined with the romance and the sex) including a blizzard and a session of shovelling afterwards. If you crave a bit of winter warmth, why not pick up a copy? It’s only 99 cents, from the publisher and selected bookstores.

By the way, the photo at the top of this post was taken one long ago winter, from my living room window. This is part of what I do miss.

Charity Sunday: Habitat for Humanity - #CharitySunday #home #holidays #GivingTuesday

Charity Sunday banner

The winter holiday season is upon us, a time for gathering with friends and family and sharing our blessings. In the US last Thursday, we celebrated Thanksgiving. Next week is so-called “Giving Tuesday”, a recently-established day of charitable giving intended to counter the commercialism and materialism that has overwhelmed the festive season.

I’m not waiting until Tuesday. Today, I’m donating to Habitat for Humanity, an organization that helps create safe, secure, affordable shelter for people who live in slums, who are homeless, or who have lost their homes to disasters.

What I love about Habitat is its concept of “sweat equity”. Volunteers and future home owners work together in building homes. A Habitat home is not a hand-out, but the product of commitment and hard labor. In addition to new construction, Habitat also renovates existing homes in many communities, particularly in urban areas, helps people repair and improve their own homes and neighborhoods, and works to raise awareness and support for decent and affordable housing around the world.

The concept of home is particularly poignant at these time of year when so many of us go “home for the holidays”. So as usual on Charity Sunday, I’ll donate one dollar to my chosen charity for each comment I get on this post.

Please comment. Please share. And please be grateful for your own home, and be generous to those less fortunate.

Of course, I also have an excerpt for you. This is from my MMF holiday ménage Almost Home.

Home is a state of heart.

Suzanne and Gino have history going back to high school, but for

A mistletoe kiss at a holiday party reminds her of their old bond and proves that some things get better with age. Misteltoe Kisses - #Christmas #kisses #holidayromance

Is it Christmas season already? Time once again for holiday romance? Where did the year go?

Sunday Snog in the Snow (#203)

Today I’m participating in the Blissemas Snogs in the Snow event. I’ve got an excerpt from my holiday M/M/F ménage Almost Home, set in a hot tub in rural New England, after a blizzard. I vividly remember living through storms like this one, where there’s so much snow it pretty much paralyzes normal lifeand you have time to think about other things!

Leave me a comment telling me about your most memorable encounter with snow. You could win a $5 bookstore gift certificate!

And don’t miss all the other Snogs in the Snow. Most of the other authors are doing giveaways, too.

Gino!” she scolded. “Behave!”

Why should I?” asked her lover, rubbing his body against hers under the surface of the water. “Harry doesn’t mind. Do you?”

The lanky blond on Gino’s other flank grinned. “Not at all. Long as you keep up what you’re doing over here, that is.”

Harris had untied his ponytail. His golden locks flowed over his shoulders, darkening to sepia where wet. With his thin face and chiselled features, he looked like some warrior ascetic, a knight on a quest for some sacred prize. Suzanne could understand why Gino found him attractive. She wondered whether he really was one-hundred percent gay.

Leaning back against the redwood wall and closing her eyes, she allowed the peace of the night to enfold her. Her limbs were heavy. Her heart felt as though it was about to overflow.

The growl of motors and a rattling of metal reached her ears. Gino’s solar-heated hot tub was at the back of the house, away from the street. Still, the faint noise shattered the intense quiet of the snow-smothered night.

Ploughs,” said Harris, cocking his head in the direction of the sound. “At last.” He pointed to the cloudless sky. “Looks like they were wrong about more snow, though.”

We’ll drive you over to Pelham early tomorrow morning,” Gino added. “Actually, the highway department might have towed your car already. We’ll call first, assuming we’ve got power. Anyway, don’t worry, you’re likely to be well on your way back home by tomorrow afternoon.”

Home. Suzanne didn’t want to think about California—her neat, modern, empty condo, all the problems and decisions awaiting her at work, the bland weather and the vacant sky.

There’s no rush,” she said finally. “I’m going to miss my Monday appointment anyway. But thank you.” She squeezed Gino’s hand. “For everything.”

Now, despite all that they had done together, she found she was shy. Steam drifted up in pale swirls from the heated surface of the water. Underneath, she could barely make out the shape of their naked limbs. “I’m going to miss you,” she murmured finally. “Both of you.”

You’ll be back for Christmas, though, won’t you?” Gino’s eyes were shadowed but Suzanne understood the yearning she’d see there, if there were more light.

Maybe…” she began. She imagined another holiday with her parents, pleasant but predictable. They wouldn’t mind if she disappeared after the opening of the presents. And suddenly she couldn’t bear the thought of not being with Gino again, very soon. “Yes. I’ll be back. I promise.”

Wonderful.” Gino pulled her into a kiss that made her heart pound and her pussy tremble. “You can stay over, you know,” he added when he finally released her. “You can stay for as long as you want.”

Celebrating Two Hundred Kisses!

Today marks the 200th time I’ve posted an excerpt as part of Victoria’s Sunday Snog tradition. It’s hard for me to believe. One thing I can tell you, though. I’ve written a lot of kisses since that first snog. In fact, participating almost every week in the orally-inspired blog hop has led me to focus more on kisses in my writing. My early work tended to gloss over the kisses on the way to other activities ;^) I’ve learned to linger, to savor the sweetness of those breathless moments.

To celebrate Sunday Snog #200, I’m sharing one of my favorite kisses. I posted this as a guest at Victoria’s blog, way back in 2011, but I’ve never offered it here. The kiss comes from my holiday M/M/F ménage romance, Almost Home.

Leave me a comment telling me about your favorite kiss—from a book, a movie or from real life. I’ll randomly choose one person to receive a $5 bookstore gift certificate—or a copy of Almost Home, if you prefer.

Home is a state of heart.

Suzanne and Gino have history going back to high school, but for years Suzanne has been three thousand miles away, preoccupied with her challenging career. A mistletoe kiss at a holiday party reminds her of their old bond and proves that some things get better with age. When Gino rescues her from a New England blizzard, though, she discovers that she's not the only love in his life. Gino shares his bed and his colonial-era farm house with taciturn painter Harris Steele. Snowed in, without electricity or running water, the three explore the many shapes a triangle can assume. Although she's far away from her everyday existence, Suzanne realizes that she's almost home

A smattering of applause brought her back to awareness. “Whoa there!” hooted one of the guests. “You two want some privacy?”

Suzanne broke away from the man who had ambushed her. “Hey! What do you think you’re doing?” Embarrassment added a sharp edge to her voice.

The dark haired man favoured her with a grin. “Mistletoe,” he said, pointing upward. Sure enough, a cluster of green leaves and pale berries dangled from the door frame. He could scarcely contain his laughter.

That laugh. That voice. Something tickled Suzanne’s memory. “Gino!” she exclaimed, finally, chuckling herself. “I can’t believe it! Still acting like we’re in high school.”

I couldn’t resist, Suzy Q.” The old nickname made her blush. He hadn’t relinquished her hand. “In fact, if you don’t move, I’m very likely to kiss you again.”
