Professional Liar - #Autobiography #Fantasy #RawSilk

Image by Prachya Singhto from Pixabay

Breathe... Moist, ripe, heavy, laced with the scents of jasmine, garlic, diesel fuel, the tropical air was strange but welcome after the stale atmosphere of the airplane cabin. Kate O’Neill stepped off the jet way and filled her lungs gratefully. Even in business class, the twenty hour flight had been grueling. Kate ran her fingers through her tangled auburn curls and tried to smooth the wrinkles from her practical cotton skirt as she joined the crowds queuing at Immigration.

She felt a bit dazed. Only a month ago, she had answered the advertisement in the Boston Globe, and now here she was, half a world away, surrounded by foreign faces, buoyed by the musical rise and fall of Thai and a half-dozen other Asian languages.

Thus begins my first novel, Raw Silk – with a re-creation of my own sensory impressions from the first time I got off a plane in Bangkok. Actually, back then, in the nineteen eighties, there were no jet ways. I recall clambering down the steel steps and walking along the tarmac to the terminal, assaulted by the muggy heat even at eleven at night, breathing air that smelled as though I'd landed on another planet.

Like Kate, I'd come to Asia for a new job. I was easily as bewildered and overwhelmed as she by the vagaries of an alien culture. I used my own recollections to bring verisimilitude to Kate's experiences. But is Raw Silk autobiographical?

Yes, and no.

Threads of truth weave through the narrative fabric. The book could be viewed as a fictionalization of my own sexual explorations, especially my initiation into dominance and submission. I borrowed scenes, sexual activities, character traits, even specific items of dialogue from my interactions with my real world master. When he read the novel, he definitely picked up on at least some of my references.

Probably he would have been annoyed at my disclosures, if flattery hadn't won him over. After all, how many men have lovers who immortalize them in best selling (well... sort of) erotic novels? And anyway, my shy, nerdy, sensitive master is barely recognizable in the arrogant, crude, savagely sexy hero Gregory Marshall.

Unless you stop and listen to what the character says...

I'm a writer. That means I'm a professional liar. I take bits and pieces of reality and spin them into fantasy. My fiction abounds in people, situations, and settings drawn from my life and history. Although I might start with the truth, though, I leaven the facts with substantial portions of imagination. And I mix things up – locations, personality traits, sexual adventures – until I really don't need to worry much about the original subjects' complaints about my revelations.

Certainly I don't want to antagonize anyone from my past. However, the primary reason for embroidering upon the truth is simply that real life is rarely as interesting as fiction. I could write about that totally arousing visit to the Renaissance Faire – but in fact I didn't really end up with the bawdy wench and her swain, much as I would have liked to. That solo cross-country rail trip could have involved a quickie in the top bunk – but alas, things never progressed beyond flirting.

Many of my stories begin with actual experiences or relationships, and then spin off into the realm of fantasy when I start to ask “what if”. What if my master and I lived together? (We never have.) What if my mid-western boyfriend in grad school had been interested in BDSM? What if I found a Victorian diary detailing a society woman's sexual adventures? What if I'd met my master after decades of being married to someone else?

In fact, I've only written two or three stories that closely track real events, and even then, I manipulated the outcomes. And I find that as I've gained more writing experience, my tales have grown further from their autobiographical roots. Still, I do return again and again to a few primal scenes, the ones that touched me most deeply, telling the story from different perspectives, reliving the intensity through my characters.

I sometimes wonder whether readers can tell. Do the scenes closer to the “truth” somehow feel more real? Or am I as skilled a liar as I believe?

Let's try a quiz. (Of course this will only work for people who are somewhat familiar with my books...) Which of the following scenes from Raw Silk is mostly closely based on real life?

  1. The infamous sex with chillies scene;
  2. The scene is which Kate masturbates with the knob from the end of her hotel bed;
  3. The scene in which Kate has sex on stage with a Thai go-go dancer;
  4. The scene in which Somtow pleasures Kate with a ripe mango;
  5. The scene in which Gregory sodomizes Kate for the first time.

Am I going to give you the answer? As I consider the list, I'm not sure I can. I know which of the items above I intended as the right selection, but when I review the others in my mind, I realize each one has a core of truth, even if I modified the background details.

In fact, the more I write, the harder I find it to distinguish between things that “really” happened and things that occurred only in my fiction. I know this may seem bizarre, but my most exotic sexual adventures took place decades ago. Looking back now, I find they have a dreamlike quality – not very different from the way I remember my stories. The imaginary settings in my novels feel as tangible and detailed as the places I've actually been – perhaps more so, because I had to observe them more closely in order to describe them for my readers.

At this point, truth and lies intertwine so intimately in my fiction that even I can't distinguish them. And I suppose that might be viewed as dangerous, to some.

But I've always lived my life more in my head than in my body. The products of my imagination have at least as much substance for me as the so-called real world. Dangerous or not, there's nothing I can do.

Sizzling contemporary romance by Sadira Stone - only 99 cents! #CheapRomance #99cents

Sale banner

Check out Sadira Stone’s latest novel, Runaway Love Story – only 99 cents until September 6th. Nearly four hundred pages of delicious, steamy contemporary romance, for less than a buck!

She hates average...he's as average as they come.

High school history teacher Doug Garvey is trying to enjoy his last few weeks of summer vacation, but receiving his final divorce decree hits him harder than expected. After a brief fling fizzles, he fears love just isn't in the cards for him. If only he could find someone who's real, someone interested in something beyond herself…maybe a new running partner who can keep up with his more carnal appetite. When sexy, straight-talking Laurel runs across his path, he dares to hope again.

He's done with social-climbing posers...she's ambitious and has big dreams.

Fired from an art gallery, Laurel Jepsen shelves her pursuit of an art career in San Francisco to help her beloved great aunt Maxie move into assisted living. While out on a morning run, she's harassed by a group of teens until a tall, broad-shouldered hottie steps in, pretending to be her boyfriend with a kiss that makes her wish it were true. But she's only passing through, not looking for a relationship.

Their fierce chemistry burns up the sheets—and the couch, the shower, the forest—but falling in love would ruin everything. Laurel can't stay in Eugene, and he can't leave. Doug's only hope is to convince her the glittery life she's after could blind her to the opportunities already in her path.

Here’s a tease of a snippet:

“I’m sorry she called you the S word.”

“Huh?”

“Sensible.”

She laughed. “Yeah. That’s a curse word, as far as I’m concerned.” She leaned her head on his shoulder.

“I’ll strike it from my vocabulary. Your S word is sparkle.” He traced her jawline with a feather-light touch. “Look at you, Laurel. You’re blinding.” His twilight-blue gaze made her heart dance—a steamy tango with swirls and dangerous dips. He kissed her, and, for a moment, she forgot all about caution, about cutting things off before they became too serious, about San Francisco. Her focus narrowed to his lips on hers, his nearness heating her whole body, opening her like a blossom, soft and willing. Ripe for the plucking.

“God, I’ve missed you.” He scooped her legs across his lap. One hand cradling her nape, the other gripping her thigh, he kissed her senseless. His velvet tongue teased her lips apart. He tasted of sugary coffee. The world around them faded—just two bodies, calling and answering, breathing in sync, their pulses beating the same rhythm.

Revelations cover

Blurb

Aster Worthington is whisked away from delivering an astronomy lecture to a secret facility in New Mexico. There she spearheads a select group of scientists investigating First Contact with an alien civilization, in this case a message from an altruistic race called the Lambdons who are offering plans for a reactor giving humanity free energy.  Humans build the reactor and, per the instructions from the message, house it in a massive Dome.

Seven years later strange things have been happening inside the Dome and Aster is sent in to investigate. She finds impossibly high buildings filling the interior and weird life forms inhabiting what should a sterile environment. Then the impossible happens: thousands of Lambdons are found inhabiting the Dome and they are not friendly at all. Now two civilizations are on a collision course and humanity is most definitely going to lose. The last hope of humanity? A two-thousand-year old scroll hidden by the church.

Excerpt

The Locusts

Dozens of the strange locusts had descended on the marine nearest her. Gun dropped, with arms, torso, and legs covered with the little creatures, his hands were frantically brushing off the locust-like creatures, but more and more took their place. Some had purchased holds on his hands, their small heads stubbornly attached like ticks on dog while their bodies bounced up and down with soldier’s panicky movements. More and more landed on his face and he started to run wildly, screaming all the while.

One of her earliest memories from childhood was her grandmother, a farmer’s wife, chopping off a chicken’s head. Headless, the poor bird ran in one direction, then another, somehow keeping its balance. After too many horrible seconds, the poor chicken fell to the ground, twitching. The man’s aimless running reminded her of the chicken running, not knowing it was already dead.

The man screamed again, fell to his knees and ripped his shirt open. The locust must have burrowed through his clothes because they now covered his entire chest. With each locust plucked away, a red wound appeared. She watched in horror as the man fell to his knees first, his arms by his side. Then he collapsed, face first, to the floor.

She pulled her eyes from the soldier only to witness other soldiers swatting at the locust or brushing them off their clothes, all experiencing the same horror. Some held tight to their guns while they tried to wipe the locusts off their uniforms. Others had discarded their weapons and employed both hands in ridding themselves of the vile little creatures. Small bumps of cloth rippled along their shirts and pants, giving the impression the uniforms were alive. There were more and more screams.

Review Tuesday: Bound to Tradition Book 1 by A P von K'Ory #ReviewTuesday #Africa #Multicultural

Bound to Tradition: The Dream cover

Bound to Tradition Book 1: The Dream by A P von K’Ory
Amazon KDP, 2013

Kenyan teenager Khira Caroline Oganga comes from a proud line of Luo warriors. Orphaned before she was born, she is her mother’s jewel: beautiful, intelligent, courageous, inquisitive and eager for experience. Although she is deeply embedded in her family and in the ancient traditions of her tribe, she’s also drawn to the English-dominated society of Kenya’s former colonial masters. Given the opportunity to study at St. Mary’s Girls High School, Khira finds herself increasingly confused by the conflicting values of her two worlds.

When she meets brash, charismatic Erik Lindqvist, a brilliant but arrogant tycoon more than twice her age, these conflicts reach a crisis. Despite the seemingly unbridgeable gaps between their status and their cultures, Khira and Erik fall in love, and the domineering Swedish billionaire is determined to marry the charming and headstrong teen – even though she has been betrothed since childhood. Khira is more than willing to become Erik’s wife, but insists that their union be on her terms. Somehow she needs to balance the expectations and rituals of her native culture against the demands of Erik’s world, and her own surging desire.

The Dream is the first book of the Bound to Tradition trilogy, which charts the sometimes rocky course of Khira’s and Erik’s relationship. I found it utterly fascinating. A P von K’Ory provides an in-depth introduction to Luo culture, conservative and “backward” in some ways, amazingly progressive in others. The relationship between the sexes is particularly intriguing. Superficially, men dominate Luo society, but among the women, males are referred to as “infants”. Women are the patient, all-suffering goddesses who nurture, protect and care for the fundamentally unstable, emotionally volatile men.

This perspective, of course, applies equally to Erik, the ultimate alpha male who nevertheless needs the balancing feminine power that Khira wields.

I loved the way the author managed to capture the unique cadence and flow of Luo language, even in English. I have no experience at all with Kenya, but the world of tradition she portrays felt genuine, as nuanced and complex as any society.

The book begins with Erik’s and Khira’s journey to her home village, to seek her grandfather’s consent to the marriage, then flashes back to recount her earlier history, her education, and her first encounters with Erik. In general, this structure works well. The author dispenses information gradually, letting the reader get to know Khira bit by bit. There are occasional “information dumps” that weaken the book – several pages of back story without any intervening action – but mostly we learn about the characters in more natural and organic fashion.

Apparently, Bound by Tradition is a prequel to the author’s Golden Shana series. Erik and Khira are Shana’s parents. Their unusual background is mentioned in the Shana books; I found it highly satisfying to read about it in detail. In fact, Shana’s relationship with Roman in some ways mirrors her parents’ history. Certainly both cases are characterized by a ferocious clash between the masculine and feminine principles, a supremely dominant man tempered, but not tamed, by a strong, confident woman.

Overall, I greatly enjoyed The Dream. I look forward to reading the next volume of the trilogy.

Trouble in Paradise? #Miami #UrbanCrime #InterracialRomance

By Tim Smith (Guest Blogger)

He’s as cool as a Pina Colada on a Key West beach, he’s the kind of guy your mother wouldn’t let you play with, and he’s every bad guy’s worst nightmare. Nick Seven is back in The Neon Jungle (Nick Seven Book 6), a gritty tale of crime and revenge on the mean streets of Miami.

In the laidback Florida Keys, former spies Nick Seven and Felicia Hagens found a paradise far removed from the covert world of the CIA.

Nick, content to run a bar on the Gulf and maintain a low profile, breaks his self-imposed exile when a friend asks for help in getting a local mob boss off his back. Popular singer Jimmie Rae wants to get free from the notorious Turk Morgan, a crooked music mogul who controls the Miami entertainment scene. Jimmie reveals that his girlfriend has gotten caught in Turk’s web, and he wants to get her out before it’s too late.

As Nick and Felicia explore the neon jungle of South Beach, they encounter the dark underside of the music business. Drugs, prostitution, street thugs, and political payoffs are Turk’s stock in trade, and he isn’t one to relinquish control over his empire.

Nick goes undercover as an international criminal to challenge him, but will he succeed in breaking Turk’s hold over Jimmie and his girl? Can Nick use the sting operation to solve a cold case murder he discovers by accident? What other secrets will he uncover?”

This story is a bit different from the other entries in the Nick and Felicia spy thriller series. If you’re familiar with TV shows like “Burn Notice” or “Leverage,” you’ve seen the trope of people pulling a scam on someone to bring them down. In this case, the target is a vicious Miami crook masquerading as a music mogul. He’s sort of a black Godfather, using a network of street thugs and paid-for cops to maintain his illegal empire.

It was fun to write because I got to send Nick undercover using an old alias from his days as a CIA spook, a Greek arms smuggler named Nick Stavros. Along with Felicia and his former partner, the somewhat trustworthy Bones McCoy, Nick concocts a plan to make Turk Morgan think his empire is crumbling around him. There are colorful locations, quirky characters, snappy dialogue, action, romance and hot sex. I made full use of South Beach as a backdrop, with its art deco buildings, bright neon lights, and endless parade of street hustlers to add atmosphere. These elements added to the ongoing sexual attraction between Nick and Felicia.

Here’s an exclusive excerpt:

Nick swam through the incoming current to catch up with Felicia, who had bested him after they dived into the ocean. When he reached her, he treaded water, shook his head, and spat out the mouthful of the Atlantic he had sucked in. Felicia bobbed neck high, treading water while giving him a teasing smile. Nick sidled up next to her and brushed his wet hair back from his face.

“Looks like I win, tough guy,” she proclaimed. “Five bucks. Pay up.”

“I left my wallet in my other pants.”

They floated with the gentle tides and looked around. Several sailboats coasted in the distance, along with some jet skis out for a day of exploring. The white sandy beach was dotted with bikinied sun worshipers and a group playing volleyball. The smell of saltwater and sunscreen permeated the air, punctuated by excited cheers and chatter from the volleyball crowd.

“Sure is pretty out here,” she said.

“That’s the second time you’ve said that. Are you sure you’re not trying to tell me something?”

She splashed water in his face. “No, I’m not tryin’ to tell you anythin’. Can’t a person make an observation without you readin’ somethin’ into it?”

“Old habit.”

She pulled him in for a kiss. “Get over it.”

Her long, wet hair dangled carelessly around her face. He peered into her eyes while caressing her cheek. “Felicia, I’d be happy anywhere we lived as long as you were there. I just can’t envision life without you being a part of it.”

She gave him a dreamy smile. “Now who’s bein’ selfish?”

“Come on. I’ll race you back to shore.”

“Double or nothin’?”

“You’re on.”

They swam toward the beach, coasting part way on the waves and reached the sandbar at the same time. They walked onto the beach and caught their breath.

“Tie,” Nick declared.

“You still owe me five bucks.”

They walked to where they had laid out their towels, and Nick took two bottles of water from the beach bag. He handed one to Felicia, then took a long drink.

Nick let his eyes wander over Felicia’s toned body, her bronze skin offset by a white mesh bikini that clung to her body. Rivulets of water dripped from her hair when she fluffed it with her fingers. In spite of the heat, her nipples pressed against her bikini top.

“I guess that water was cooler than it looks,” he said.

“What do you mean?”

He indicated her breasts. “You’re standing at attention.”

She moved a step closer to run her fingers along his arm. “If we were back home on Barbados, I wouldn’t be wearin’ this.”

“We should plan a trip there.”
