Review Tuesday: A Heart This Big - #LesbianRomance #Australia #ReviewTuesday

A Heart This Big cover

A Heart This Big by Cheyenne Blue
Ylva Press, 2019

Nina and Leigh might as well live on different planets.

Nina spends her dusty days working at her farm on the edge of Sydney and caring for her twelve year old daughter Phoebe. Bequeathed to her by the grandparents who raised her, Banksia Farm is both a beloved haven and a heavy responsibility. Nina has opened the farm to local kids and adults, who come to visit, volunteer, meet the animals and enjoy an experience increasingly rare in their urbanized existence. She welcomes everyone, but especially those special children who most need patience, support and connection to the natural world.

Leigh is the youngest partner in a prestigious downtown Sydney law firm. A dedicated workaholic who chose the law so she could help people solve their problems, Leigh wears designer clothing, drives a BMW and lives in a pricey condo overlooking the harbor. Her social life is as meticulously ordered as her professional one; her dates with women in her own class usually involve fancy dinner and wine at an upscale restaurant, occasionally followed by empty sexual pleasure. Many nights, though, Leigh spends alone.

Nina’s and Leigh’s lives collide when a child has accident while riding at Banksia and his family sues Nina for damages. Nina barges into Leigh’s well-ordered existence, insisting that, as the best insurance litigator in the business, Leigh should take on her case pro bono. Against her better judgment, Leigh agrees, at least partly because she finds Nina both attractive and admirable.

Leigh’s first visit to Banksia is a bit of a disaster, but she soon becomes comfortable in the low-key, low-budget community that Nina has nurtured. Nina turns out to be equally drawn to her fashionable, intelligent legal counsel. However, the rules are quite clear; lawyers may not get emotionally or sexually involved with their clients.

Romance, ultimately, is about feeling good. I have to say that A Heart This Big left me with a warm glow. The story is, like many romances, fairly predictable (though Ms. Blue does throw in a twist or two), but the characters and the setting are what’s important in this novel. Both Nina and Leigh feel solid and real – Nina perhaps a bit more than Leigh, but that may be partly because Leigh’s world is so foreign to me. I believed in both their love and their pain. The minor characters are equally well-drawn – especially the sometimes surly and angst-ridden pre-teen Phoebe and Grizz, Leigh’s wise and idiosyncratic paralegal.

Meanwhile, Banksia Farm is portrayed in such loving detail that I think Ms. Blue must have a real life model. The contrast between Leigh’s rather sterile world and the fertile, messy farm environment comes through strongly. To Leigh’s credit, she doesn’t run away from the dirt, the physical labor, or the sometimes peculiar folk who frequent the farm. With gentle Nina’s guidance, she learns to love them.

One other aspect of this novel made me want to celebrate: the quiet, unspectacular acceptance of same-sex relationships by every one of the characters (even the villain). There are barriers to Nina’s and Leigh’s relationship, but sexual identity is not one of them. Nobody bats an eyelash when Leigh moves in with Nina. Totally comfortable, Phoebe gleefully introduces them as her “mums”. The story includes many straight people, including some warm-hearted male characters, which I appreciate. This is not a lesbians-only world, as is the case in some lesbian romance. But it’s a world where people are free to love whomever they choose – a world we’re hopefully getting closer to all the time.

Overall, I very much enjoyed A Heart This Big. It left me feeling as though I wanted to go out and hug someone.

Lawyers, Guns and Money - #Mystery #FemmeFatale #Giveaway @Owlworks

Welcome back to Beyond Romance, M.T.! Can you tell my readers a bit about the genesis of the book? Where did you get the idea? Do you have personal experience with the worlds of Article 15?

There was a series of movies in the 80s & 90s which featured very strong, sensual, and, shall we say, somewhat morally questionable women. Lawrence Kasdan, Ron Dahl, and Joe Esterhas led us down dark paths fraught with lustful terror in Body Heat, The Last Seduction and Basic Instinct. I loved those movies and those characters, so a big thank you to Kathleen Turner, Linda Fiorentino and Sharon Stone for the opening line of Article 15:

“She was one in a million and the day I met her I should have bought a lottery ticket instead.”

I sat on that line for a long, long time. The real problem was not so much the femme fatale. It was her adversary. I wanted more of a challenge for her. More of an equal than Ned Racine or Mike Swale. That and the fact that I still had no clue what the story would be.

I was actually piling up the words for a completely different book, a sequel to my first novel, My Brother’s Keeper, when all the pieces just fell into place like a backwards film of a Jenga game a year or so ago. Not only that, but for the very first time, I had a contemporary story. I’ve set my books in the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s & 1970s. Then I skipped way ahead in my Munchausen Series into the future. But nothing in the here and now. So I set aside Jungleland and started in on the story of Helena and Griff.

She is a modern “face that launched a thousand ships” with a half a billion dollars in the bank and some ugly suspicions about her father’s death, a billionaire tech sector investor.

He’s a Wyoming cowboy who served in the Navy SEALs and operates as a “fixer” for his high powered Chicago lawyer buddy Lance Baylor.

She owes her wealth to Google and Facebook.

He’s free range, off the Facebook feedlot.

But who’s playing who?

Most of what happens in Article 15 is way over my pay grade, though most of Griff’s flying experiences can be found scattered about in my pilot log book from the times I lived and flew out west.

“She was one in a million…and the day I met her I should have bought a lottery ticket instead.”

Griffith Crowe, the "fixer" for a Chicago law firm, falls for his current assignment, Helena Nicholson, the beautiful heir of a Tech Sector venture capitalist who perished in a helicopter crash leaving her half a billion dollars, a Learjet 31, and unsavory suspicions about her father's death. As he investigates, the ex-Navy SEAL crosses swords with Helena’s step-brother, the Pentagon’s Highlands Forum, and an All-Star bad guy somebody has hired to stop him. When Griff finds himself on the wrong side of an arrest warrant he wonders: Is he a player or being played?

Lawyers and Lovers and Guns…Oh, my!

Excerpt

The low, almost husky yet honey smooth female voice poured seductively over Griff and blanked his mind as he turned into the pilot’s lounge. Though dimly lit, as they all were to facilitate napping, her red dress glowed like a hearth, yet she still wore her sunglasses as she studied her iPhone’s screen, slouching and sitting askew in one of the La-Z-Boy recliners with her legs crossed. Griff’s eye was drawn to the slow but rhythmic bounce of her stiletto heel. Predator had become prey. She took off her Jackie Ohhs, looked Griff up and down, then took a deep breath.

“Mmmm…tall, dark and dangerous…just the way I like them.”

Griff locked onto her blue-gray eyes and surrendered. He leaned against the door jam. His inside voice taunted, No plan survives contact with the enemy.

“I couldn’t help but notice Lance’s Escalade on the ramp. He is a conniving bastard, isn’t he? Of course, he is a lawyer, but he does excel at it. Not to mention the unseemly delight he takes in it.”

“Always has,” Griff said. “As long as I’ve known him.”

“Then, you really shouldn’t be surprised.”

Griff smiled, realizing it wasn’t Mayor Daley’s fault that he was still on the ground in Chicago. “Name’s Griff.”

“Yes. I know.”

He waited, his face an implacable facade, one molded and hammered into place on the Coronado Beach while enduring BUD/S training. “You got a name? Or will you answer to minx or vixen?”

“Hmmm…you like the ‘X’ words. I prefer Helena.”

“So…how long will we be playing Three Card Monte with modern art…Helena?

Playing God with medecine? Mind in Chains by @bmperrin - #thriller #speculativefiction #releaseblitz

Mind in Chains banner

Blurb

It was spring in the Midwest and the perfect storm was brewing.

A scientist of considerable renown, Dr. James Conroy, Jr., was leading a grassroots movement to improve access to medical treatment in the United States. At the same time, a group known as the Crusaders for Common Sense was rallying around the cry, “Stop Playing God with Medicine.” Claiming that medical science merely maintained the body while the soul rotted from within, they stood opposed to Conroy—violently opposed.
Like most residents of St. Louis, Missouri, Sam “Doc” Price and Nicole Veles watched in horror as the violence escalated. But after a noted medical researcher was attacked at Nicole’s apartment, she and Doc were plunged into a world of domestic terrorism.

Doc found an unlikely ally in FBI Special Agent Rebecca Marte. Together, they tried to make sense of the Crusaders’ actions that defied all logic. The terrorists showed no fear of identification—or even death. In the end, Doc risked everything he loved in a final, deadly gambit with the Crusaders, only to find that the cost of his ploy might be more than he was willing to pay.

Excerpt

Seven years before the events described in the book and Nurse Martha Wilson has discovered a missing newborn:

As they turned into the wing with the nursery, Martha slowed and turned to Jorge. “They’ll find her, won’t they?” Jorge said nothing for a moment, so she added, “The truth.”

Jorge sighed. “I can’t really say. Is there an angry ex-spouse somewhere? A childless neighbor? All I know is that the police will run down every lead before they give up.”

“But if it’s not friends or family?” Martha asked although she thought she knew the answer.

“Then you’ve done everything you could. Getting this on the air in 20 minutes is a good start; the first few hours are the most important. After that, the chances start going down fast. And after a few days ….” He shook his head but didn’t finish.

Martha shuddered and squeezed her eyes closed. These were facts she had heard before, but they had been only meaningless statistics at the time. Now, they tore at her heart, the pain worsening with each tick of her mental clock.

Two hours later, after meeting with the local police who had no news about Baby Jane Doe, Martha couldn’t control her emotions any longer. She started sobbing.

Six hours later, the interviews were complete, and Martha took a taxi home, afraid to trust her driving. She went to bed, hardly speaking to her husband. The next day, she called in sick. And the day after. And the day after that.

To Martha, the news was always the same. There were no ex-spouses. The neighbors either had children or were retired with their children now raising their own. Video cameras had caught the comings and goings from the maternity wing at the hospital, but everyone belonged. Simply put, there were no suspects, and the trail, if there ever had been one, was ice cold.

After ten days passed and there was no news about Baby Jane Doe, Martha went to work only to resign. She couldn’t face another expectant mother, knowing she had lost a human life left in her care.

Saturday Spanks: Babes in Bondage - #Dominance #Submission #SaturdaySpanks #NewRelease

Saturday Spanks banner

I’ve got another exclusive excerpt for you today from my latest release, Babes in Bondage. It’s not exactly spanking... but close enough!

Enjoy!

“Can I—can I whip her?” Ted asked, before he could stop himself. God, had he really said that? He’d never hit a woman in his life—well, aside from the spanking he’d given Marcy, which the cheeky girl had asked for.

“Certainly. What implement would you prefer?” Shark flipped open a wooden chest that Ted had assumed was an end table. The chest held a dozen different punishment devices, each one resting neatly in a satin-lined depression.

“Holy shit!” Ted clamped his hand over his mouth. It was one thing to fantasize about delivering a whipping, quite another to be faced by this abundance of perversity. He shook his head. “I—I really have no idea.”

“Any of them particularly appeal to you?” The Dom extracted a little whip with knotted strands about six inches long. “What about this flogger? Pretty easy to handle, with a nice, stingy feel.” The rich scent of leather filled Ted’s head as he inspected the offered device.

“Um…”

“Or maybe the tawse?” This was a fat strap, four inches wide and two feet long, of heavier leather than the tail of the flogger. One end narrowed into a handle, while at the other, the leather split into a comb-like arrangement. “This has a thuddier effect, so it can leave bruises.” Shark swished it through the air and landed a blow on the bondage frame, an inch to the left of Daphne’s breast.
Both she and Ted flinched.

“But Daphne likes it,” Shark continued. “She’s proud of my marks.”

Ted’s cock felt like it would drill right through his pants. “I don’t know…” he began.

“Then there’s the riding crop.” The fiberglass shaft whistled as Shark swept it in front of Ted’s eyes. This time, he brought the leather tongue down hard on the fullest part of Daphne’s ass. The girl yelped and jerked reflexively. A livid patch bloomed in the wake of the blow.

Ted watched in horrified fascination as the mark of the crop darkened and grew puffy. It looked as though it hurt. Yet he couldn’t help noticing the way the woman’s juices overflowed her pussy lips and dribbled down the inside of her thighs in the wake of Shark’s blow.

She was as aroused as he was.

She wanted more.

“The crop,” he blurted out. “I’ll try the crop.”

“Good choice,” said Master Shark. “A favorite with beginners. It’s straightforward to control and produces lovely stripes. Here you are, then.”

Ted forced himself to take hold of the leather-wrapped handle. He swished it back and forth a few times, getting a sense of its weight and dynamics.

“That’s right.” Stephen gave him an approving nod. “Speed is more important than force. Let the springiness of the shaft do the work.”

With greater confidence, Ted whisked the crop through the air.

“Good—that’s good—now bring it down on her ass.”

Whoosh! The crop flew. The tip connected with Daphne’s butt, on the opposite cheek from Shark’s stroke. She gave a little cry, half pain, half pleasure. A neat red triangle bloomed on her pale skin.

Fire streaked through Ted’s body. Power blazed in his chest. Giving himself up to instinct, he swept his instrument of discipline in a wide arc and landed it upon her flesh once more. The “snap” of leather meeting skin aroused him almost as much as the way she squirmed.

“Excellent! By the way, her safe word ‘tofu’. You know about safe words?”

“Um—yeah.” Uncertainty swept over him. Was he really going to beat this delightful girl? Oh, he wanted to, that was for sure. His dick strained inside his pants, urging him on. But what if he truly hurt her? What if he went too far?

“Don’t worry,” Shark reassured him. “Daphne knows how much she can take.” The Dom pinched one of the crimson welts, making the girl whimper. “But she can take a lot. Go ahead, Ted. Give her what she craves.”

Swallowing his doubts, Ted brought the crop down hard on the woman’s irresistible ass.

“Thank you, Sir!”

Daphne’s choked exclamation was a potent aphrodisiac. This was mutual, consensual—the sub wanted this as much as he did. He lashed her again, marking her precisely, patterning the canvas of her buttocks. Her moan and her scent inflamed him. As she writhed in her bonds, he rained blows on her ass and the tender backs of her thighs, marveling at her willing acceptance of each one.

“Thank you,” I choke out.

“For what?” His eyes cut away. The air between us has changed. I can't explain it. Suddenly, I'm uncomfortable.

And yet I just want to be with him.

“For killing for me.”

As the words come forth from my mouth, I cringe inside. I did not mean to say for me. “For me” implies that he killed the bunny out of some attachment to me.

We are not allowed to have emotions for one another. It puts us at risk.

“I did it for me,” he says, louder than he should need to.

“You did?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To challenge Romeo.”

“Why would you do that?” My voice goes up to a sharp squeak at the end, incredulous.

He laughs. “Because we are taught to destabilize power structures.”
He looks around. “What do you think the compound is?”

Reviews and Endorsements for Meli Raine Books:

“The first book in the False trilogy is a psychological thriller worthy of Hitchcock, keeping you guessing until the very end.” — Apple Books Editors

“…intrigue and dark humor on display in this thriller…”

While the immediate—and more compelling—tension in Raine’s (A Shameless Little Bet, 2018, etc.) heart-pumping series opener comes from Lily’s constant proximity to her would-be killer, the action takes place against a backdrop of secret government scandals. The “screwed-up D.C.-insider scandal,” as it is clumsily summarized early on, is pleasingly twisty…

Fortunately, Lily’s voice is captivating, wry, and tough enough to sell this thriller. The novel ends with a cliffhanger that startles, if only because readers will have become so attached to Lily.

— Kirkus Reviews

“Fresh, riveting, and thrumming with emotion and romantic suspense, False Memory is absolutely unputdownable. You need this book!” - New York Times bestselling author Meghan March

“I accidentally lost a day to this trilogy! It is unputdownable. Apparently I'm on a dark-and-twisty binge, and this book is addictive.” - USA Today bestselling author Sarina Bowen (review for Harmless series)
