Slutty Empowerment -- #Freedom #Romcom #Giveaway @RomanceWSC

Adventures of a Wannabe Slutty Bartender cover

By W.S. Carmichael (Guest Blogger)

I took a risk when I titled my newest book, The Misadventures of a (Wannabe) Slutty Bartender by putting the word ‘Slutty’ in the title. Slutty is loaded word. Hearing it elicits some type of visceral response from everyone, and rarely is that response positive. For most, the word slutty represents a woman of low moral character, someone we should look down upon with disdain and scorn. I’ll admit, there were times in my life I thought much the same way. Calling a woman a slut is usually the result of gossip, driven by virtue signaling and insecurities. When used in a derogatory way, the moniker of slut is a badge of shame, a public declaration of a woman’s unworthiness of love and compassion. We are to believe she is dirty, unclean and impure.

Well, I refuse to continue the tradition of shaming a woman for the choices she makes with her own body. Which is why I decided to put ‘Slutty’ on the front cover, out in the open for God and everyone to see.

As times change and social norms evolve, being called a slut no longer carries with it the negative connotations it once did. For many, a slut is merely a woman who chooses to reject the patriarchal ideology that a woman touched is a woman ruined while men are free to dip their wick in any willing receptacle without damage to their reputation or social standing. What was once a shameful label is now looked at as a symbol of pride by some.

The Misadventures of a (Wannabe) Slutty Bartender is a story about a woman empowering herself (or at least attempting to) by no longer allowing anyone to tell her how she should behave or how she should conduct her private life. The main character, Ava, has been turning herself inside out for several years trying to become the person her fiancé and his stuffy parents would approve of. When her engagement collapses in a heap of shock and lies, she realizes she has lost herself in the outdated and suffocating perception of what makes a woman valuable. In an effort to regain her essence, she embarks on a mission to embrace life my having a series of one night stands. She theorizes the only way as a young, single woman to recapture her lost zest for life is to welcome all Vegas has to offer, including casual sex. It isn’t the sex she is necessarily after, but instead she is chasing the freedom to decide what – and who – she does and when she does it. Unfortunately for her, her escapades rarely live up to her fantasies. Each attempt is more hilariously disappointing than the last, thus making her a wannabe slut. Don’t worry. She eventually gets the HEA all women deserve.

My hope is that in addition to being entertaining, The Misadventures of a (Wannabe) Slutty Bartender conveys the message all women are fabulous, worthy and fierce, regardless of their sexual practices. There is no longer room in a woman’s underwear for societal judgment.

Make no mistake, I am in no way advocating the women of the world suddenly start tossing their cooters at every man passing by. In addition to being an author, I have also been a nurse for over twenty years. While I am all for women having total control over their goodies, my medical training demands I urge you to use good judgement and be safe.

Whether you have one partner or a hundred, you deserve to be valued for the awesome and beautiful person you are.

Blurb

Ava Moreland has it all planned out. In two months, she will marry her fiancé, Tim. She’ll continue working at Vegas’s famous Cosmopolitan bar while he runs his father’s accounting firm. Soon they’ll start a family and she’ll have the white picket life she’s always dreamed of.
Or not.

When her fairytale engagement implodes in a devastating display, Ava embarks on a quest to reclaim her identity and feminine prowess – by sleeping her way through Las Vegas. With her best friend, Jarrod, acting as wingman her plan is foolproof.
Or not.

Nothing goes as planned with hilariously disastrous results. Her sexual misadventures will keep you in stitches as Ava searches for herself in Sin City, finding herself and her happily ever after in the unlikeliest of places.

Excerpt

That’s your master plan? To become known as the slutty bartender?” Jarrod raises one eyebrow, his skepticism written all over his face.

Well, it sounds bad when you put it like that.” I shrug. “You’re misunderstanding the point.”

Is the point to see how many STD’s you can rack up?”

I sigh. “No. The point is to reclaim my womanly power. The point is to live life. The point is to embrace life’s opportunities without the expectation of a happily ever after. The point is to forget about Mr. Right and enjoy Mr. Right Now.”

Jarrod shakes his head, leaves me sitting on the sofa alone and goes into his bedroom.

I thought you’d be totally on board!” I shout to his closed door.

I mean, seriously. It isn’t as if I told him I was going to lay spread eagle in front of The Bellagio holding a sign reading ‘Free Sex’. While I’m not the type of girl to throw her cooter at every guy passing by, I see no reason to be a total prude either. I’ve decided to explore the world of one-night stands. I get hit on all the time at work. What’s so wrong with taking someone up on the offer if I find him attractive? I am no longer beholden to anyone.

A few minutes later, Jarrod jerks his door open. “Ok. I’ve thought about it. You can do this, but you need a chaperone.”

I don’t need a chaperone.”

Ok, A wingman, then. I’ll be personally vetting your selections to make sure there’s no psycho vibes.” He plops down next to me on the couch.

WS Carmichael is attempting to write the world into romantic bliss one novel at a time. Based in upstate NY, she travels as often as her hectic schedule will allow. When she isn’t busy writing, she’s a mother, nurse and avid sportswoman.

WS Carmichael fell in love with romance at an early age when she would sneak Harlequins from her mother. A voracious reader, she eventually made the jump to writing.

Writing is her passion and she’s always jotting down new storyline and character ideas. Often, her characters take on a life of their own and don’t always cooperate with her plan for them. Creating well developed, strong alpha male characters that don’t fit into the typical romance hero mold makes her novels exciting and relatable. A woman who believes whole heartedly in happily ever after, she gives her heroes the heroine they deserve.

Excerpt: The Stable Boy’s Roughneck Ride: Joining

You are, of course, correct that my primary function is serving the erotic needs of my masters,” Ohannes confirmed. “I am sure that in his absence, Master Blackwood would be well pleased for me to serve his honored guests. The Master enjoyed watching me submit to his companions, many of whom remarked that they never had their cocks sucked so masterfully before. In the absence of Master Blackwood, you are my masters. How may I serve you?”

You may suck his cock while I prepare your hot ass for a good pounding,” Iker replied, slapping Ohannes’ buttocks. “Oh, Perry, you’re too much with that shocked look. Did you really think I wasn’t going to take advantage of what this stud has to offer? He was literally bred to please man, and this man hasn’t been pleased in too long. It’s not like you’ve gotten laid recently either.”

Very well, I suppose it would be impolite to decline the good fellow’s kind offer,” Peregrine agreed, his throbbing cock springing from his pants as he undressed and reclined on the bed, gasping with pleasure as Ohannes wrapped the head of his cock in soft, pink lips.

In the meantime, Iker had stripped off Ohannes’ trousers and underwear. He selected a tube of fruit-flavored lube and squeezed a generous amount onto his thick fingers. He slid two fingers into Ohannes’ tight asshole, causing the young man to moan with surprise and pleasure.

Oh, fuck, Master, your fingers are so thick!” Ohannes gasped. “Ohh, I haven’t been fucked in so long! Please fuck my ass.”

This little bitch is hungry for a deep dicking, Perry,” Iker chuckled. “Shall we take turns on him and see who makes him cum?”

Would you like both of us to fuck you?” Peregrine inquired, caressing Ohannes’ face.

Oh yes, Master, it would be my pleasure,” Ohannes agreed eagerly.

Iker lubed up his cock and tossed the lube to Peregrine. He pressed his cock against Ohannes’ asshole.

One minute each and whoever makes him cream wins.”

Wins what?”

Winner chooses,” Iker said with a shrug. “Guess I’ll have to think of something, ‘cause you know it’s gonna be me.”

Ohannes gave a keening wail as Iker slid his cock deep into his ass.

Oh, Master, your cock’s so fucking big! Oh, fuck, it’s so fat!”

Your fucking hot little ass is so tight, Pretty Baby!” Iker groaned. “Damn, I don’t think I’ve ever fucked an ass this good.”

Happy Wednesday! Today’s post is part both the MFRW Book Hooks blog hop and my own Lusty Month of May event. All through the month of May, this book, normally $3.99, is only 99 cents at Smashwords, Barnes & Noble and Kobo. Why not indulge yourself?

By the way, during the Lusty Month of May, every comment on my blog counts as an entry in my giveaway of a $25 bookstore gift certificate. If you join my email list (see the button on the right), that counts as five entries.

Blurb

Find someone else to satisfy your needs.”

When her husband complains about her constant sexual demands, MILF Lauren Gordon is shocked, hurt, and determined to act on his instructions. She’s never strayed outside the bounds of her marriage, but now that she has permission, she unleashes her voracious libido on her gorgeous girlfriend next door, the pool boy, and anyone else who strikes her fancy.

Once you’ve freed the genie, you can’t put it back in the bottle.

The Hook

In fact she was on the I-5 by five-thirty, speeding north in her bright red Prius while the sun rose over the San Bernadino hills. She’d poked her head into the bedroom before she left. Elliot slept deeply, wearing nothing but a pair of boxers that highlighted his morning erection. Horny as always, she’d been tempted to climb into bed and give them both some relief, but she held back. She’d find someone else to take care of her – just as he’d instructed.

The studio was as crazy as always. She slipped easily into professional mode, joking with the cast members, giving orders and answering questions, shoulder holding her phone to her ear half the time.

Hugo loved the script. Her co-producer was a trim, energetic guy a few years younger than she was, with sparkling blue eyes, a ready laugh and a reddish-brown ponytail. Lauren had always thought him attractive, but today she struggled to keep her hands off him. It was sweet torture, standing close to him as they watched the rehearsal. Things weren’t much better with Daniel, the director, a dark and intense New Yorker with eyes that could bore into your soul. She’d fantasized about him more than once. Now all those lascivious images came back to haunt her.

Difficult though it was, she managed to suppress her lustful impulses and focus on the show. She knew that getting involved with colleagues would be a big mistake. She might be a slut, but she wasn’t an idiot. Fortunately, she’d tucked her bullet vibe into her purse. During lunch she slipped away to the restroom for a brief but energetic session with the toy that took some of the edge off her horniness. The self-administered pleasure provided enough relief to let her concentrate on her job for the rest of the hectic afternoon.

By the time Hugo called it a day at seven p.m., she was totally fried. It was lucky she didn’t have to drive back to Orange County. In twenty minutes – including getting her car from the garage and tipping the very cute attendant – she was at her condo, guzzling a sparkling water and gazing down at the lights of downtown Los Angeles.

She’d bought the place a couple of years ago, when it became clear that “Wild Seed” was going past pilot, to save herself some painful commuting and give herself a place to unwind by herself. Now she spent one or two nights a week in the city, especially when she had to be on the set early.

Normally her evenings downtown were quiet, a chance for her to relax and decompress. Tonight, though, despite her weariness, she felt restless.

A drink would be nice. Though it was only a few blocks from her building, she hadn’t been to the Gallery Bar at the Biltmore in years. The elegant, wood-paneled lounge with its ornate chandeliers and padded leather chairs seemed like just the thing.

She took a quick shower, then dressed in a clinging black cocktail dress with a deeply scooped neck and a skirt that ended well above her knees. No need for stockings on such a warm night, she decided, or a bra, either. Her tits didn’t need the support. So what if her nipples were visible? The clientele at the Biltmore would be too well bred to notice. She considered going bare below as well, then decided instead to wear a scarlet silk thong instead which highlighted her tanned and toned ass. Just in case someone wanted a look…

Review Tuesday: Steam and Sensibility by Kirsten Weiss -- #Steampunk #GoldRush #ReviewTuesday

Steam and Sensibility cover

Steam and Sensibility by Kirsten Weiss

Misterio Press, 2014

Miss Sensibility Grey arrives in San Francisco in the earliest days of the Gold Rush to find the rattle-trap community little more than a ghost town. Pretty much every able-bodied man in the California Territories has lit out for the hills, dreaming of wealth.

Sensibility’s father, a brilliant engineer and inventor, has died, leaving her his obscurely encoded journal and a clever watch of his own design that never needs winding. Back in their home in Lima, Peru, Sensibility served as his companion and assistant while continually developing her own technical abilities. Now, alone in the world, she had no choice but to seek the protection of her uncle, whom she has never met but who is reportedly in the California Territories.

As soon as she sets foot on shore, however, she finds herself pursued by a bewildering variety of individuals, all of whom want the knowledge hidden in her father’s notebook – the key to an inexhaustible supply of energy. Miss Jane Algrave claims to be an agent of the U.S. government, while acting the part of an easily intoxicated lady of dubious virtue. Then there’s Mr. Raines, a nattily dressed gentleman who has no compunctions about throttling young women who don’t cooperate with his schemes. Enigmatic East Coast lawyer Krieg Night appears harmless enough, yet always seems to be around when Sensibility’s in danger. The imperious and elegant Marquise offers Sensibility sanctuary at her ranch, but she too seems determined to acquire the key to Professor Grey’s mysterious Aether.

A shadowy cabal called The Mark has kidnapped Sensibility’s uncle and threatens to kill him if she does not surrender her father’s secrets. Meanwhile, the deeper Sensibility delves into those secrets, the more she realizes the terrible danger the world will face if they fall into the wrong hands.

I love steampunk, both to read and to write. Hence, when my versatile blog guest Kirsten Weiss included a link to her steampunk series (as part of her cozy mystery post!), I couldn’t resist the temptation to check it out.

Steam and Sensibility’s setting is original and intriguing. I’ve read a number of tales set a few years later, when San Francisco was a male-dominated boom-town, but this book presents a different picture. It was particularly fascinating to ponder the relationship between the effectively independent California Territories and the United States of America.

Sensibility is a character with some similarities to my own young engineering prodigy, Gillian Smith. She’s clearly brilliant. For instance, she creates a humanoid automaton to clean her cabin during the voyage, just to keep herself from getting bored. However, given her skills and intelligence, I found her behavior and attitude during the first half of the book to be annoyingly passive and timid. She allows herself to be manipulated and puts up little resistance, seeming ready to give up her father’s dangerous legacy to save an uncle she’s never seen. She uses neither her considerable intellect nor her engineering skills in her struggle against The Mark and its minions.

In the second half of the novel, she comes into her own. I don’t want to spoil your enjoyment by sharing too many details, but she becomes both braver and more ingenious in her strategies. The intensity mounts, culminating in a wonderfully dramatic scene set in an old mission church – complete with a deranged villianess, killer robots and an earthquake!

Overall, this book is a lot of fun, and I’m quite tempted to buy the next volume in the series. My main hesitation is the mix of paranormal elements with the steampunk tech. Somehow magical incantations don’t mesh well with clockwork. (Indeed, Sensibility herself has similar reservations.) Still, I’m curious to see how the character develops. I certainly liked her a lot more when I finished the book then when I started.

Excerpt

Do you realize how close I came to a medical rollback today, and all because you couldn’t mind your own damned business?”

Keith crossed his arms and spoke with an edge. “I didn’t realize the welfare of my boat team wasn’t my business.”

There was enough sarcasm in his tone to make her want to rip it out of his larynx. She gave him an acid glare. “You need to learn to pay attention when I say I’m good.”

A muscle jumped in his jaw. “A flap of your skin was hanging down.”

I don’t give a damn!” she yelled.

I do!” he thundered back. “It would’ve been grossly negligent of me not to send you to medical.”

She clenched her teeth, nausea bubbling at the back of her throat. The length of her esophagus felt like it was covered in road-rash. How awesome would it be if she puked, then fainted in the middle of this argument?

Keith shook his head. “Look at you, Justice. You’re gray.”

She thrust a tautly knuckled fist against her lips. Get through this…get through this… “Before I lose my mind,” and consciousness, “I need to make sure you understand something. On my completely hosed journey to BUD/S, I almost didn’t make it out of PTRR. If I’m rolled back there a second time for an injury, I might not ever escape. So I need you to stop being an overprotective jerk and treat me like a regular candidate—like we agreed—and I need you to do it right now—like I told you yesterday.”

He regarded her flatly. “No.”

Best Laid Plans.... #Computers #Frustration #Fortune

Computers = frustration!

Image by Ben Kerckx from Pixabay

I had great plans for today. Having spent all week on day-job-related stuff, I’d blocked off Sunday for writing. After getting my Lisabet email, I planned to spend the rest of the day on my WIP, finishing off the current half-complete chapter and maybe, just maybe, getting a start on my next.

Then I discovered that my email client wouldn’t start and things came to a screeching halt. I really didn’t understand what Thunderbird was complaining about, but it worked yesterday. So I figured all I needed to do was restore the state of the system from last night’s back up...

THEN I found that I couldn’t decrypt the back up file. The GPG program I use was complaining that the file was too large. Okay, so it was 5 GB... and the program was choking at 4 GB. I searched the web but found no real help for this problem.

On the other hand, I didn’t realize my Lisabet files had gotten so large, either. This was a wake up call; I needed to archive some of the stuff I have laying around on my hard drive.

Meanwhile, I really needed to get my email working. I’ve been using Thunderbird for decades (literally), and I really like its functionality. It’s a core tool to help me organize my writing and marketing work. I have four different email accounts I use with the program, for different purposes, and dozens of folders, often with multiple levels of nesting. Now I needed to recreate everything.

Luckily, I had the raw email files in another backup, but setting up new accounts, then figuring where each folder needed to go in order to show up correctly... well, let’s just say I didn’t get any writing done today! I did succeed in reconstituting my email system (I think). I also set up a new drive for archiving stuff that I don’t use often, so I could clear some space on my active drive. But my poor chapter is going to have to wait for another day.

Well, at least I discovered that my backup strategy had a serious hole in it. I suppose that’s fortunate. Another time I might have lost a manuscript, rather than some email config files – something that couldn’t be replaced if it were gone.

It’s tough to stay calm in this sort of situation. Even tougher to be grateful, though I really should be, since this incident could save me from something much worse. Still, I’m disappointed not to have made much needed progress on my ever-so-slowly developing novel.

Sigh. The life of an author. It’s all glamor and fun, isn’t it? ;^)
