Connected in more ways than one - #RomanticSuspense #Giveaway #AustralianBushFires @JMAdeleBooks

Convincing You cover
Blurb

We were connected in more ways than one—I knew it when we met.

What I didn’t know was how close he would bring me to death.

And that death would be a blessing.

Andrea has always been able to tap into messages from somewhere beyond. When she meets Ben, an unrelenting force draws them together. But it’s going to take some convincing to help Ben realise their potential. Ben never thought his friend’s little sister would be anything more than a nuisance. He was wrong. She’d always been so much more. And now, their bond could be severed and her pulse silenced forever.

*Recommended for readers 18+ due to mature content. *

You’ve gone quiet. What’s wrong?”

I flicked a glance at his nose, knowing that if I looked him in the eye he might see something I wasn’t ready for him to see. Something I was trying to understand for myself before I admitted it to anyone else. I wouldn’t be admitting it to him, that was for sure.

Hm? What? No, nothing. I’m just hungry.” I hid my hands under the table. Way to play it cool.

One of Ben’s brows inched up

Tapping a finger on the edge of my seat, I ignored the weight of his stare. The silence was like a wedgie that I couldn’t get rid of.

I cleared my throat and aimed for casual conversation. “So, are you a league convert yet?”

He scoffed. “Never. I was only helping out a friend.”

If you hate it so much, why’d you do it?”

I don’t hate it. I’m just loyal to my code.”

Plenty of players switch.” I picked my brain trying to remember the names Dad had said at the game. “Like, you know, that guy, The King. What’s his name?”

Wally Lewis?”

Yeah, him.” I think. He was the only player I could think of.

Just ’cause The King switched doesn’t mean I have to.”

Fair enough.”

Ben stood by his convictions. I liked that. My eyes drifted sideways in a bid for some reprieve from his gaze. Two tables away, the boys were slapping each other’s hands, doing some customised shake thing, and laughing like loons.

They’re good mates.” Ben’s comment brought me right back to those crystal blues.

They are.” I tilted my head. “Why are you friends with my brother? Seriously?”

His lips quirked. “Stewart’s all right.”

He’s different with his friends, I guess.”

He hooked an arm behind his seat, twisting his chest towards me. “I know he can be a dick sometimes. He has a weird way of getting attention. He means well.”

The fact that he was defending my brother endeared him to me even more.

Do you play any sport?” Ben scratched behind his ear like he was uncomfortable talking about Stewart.

I was happy to change the subject. “I dance.”

You dance?” His brows rose as he leaned back a little. “Like ballet?”

God, no. I’m not graceful enough for that. Hip-hop is my thang.”

Your thang?”

Yeah. Like this.” I jumped out of my seat and gave him a demo—legs popping, arms locking, all while Nelly Furtado and Timbaland sang about promiscuity in my head.

His mouth dropped open and his eyes bugged out.

Am I that bad? I slid back onto my seat, heat infusing my cheeks.

You’re good.”

Pulling my shoulders back, I puffed out my chest. “Thank you.”

No, I really mean that.” He blinked, swallowing.

I relaxed against the back of my chair. Sincerity. Another tick on the list of his good characteristics. I was sure there had to be some negatives.

I already liked so many things about him. His commitment. His discipline. His arse. But if I told him, I’d scare him away. He wouldn’t get it. Not for another few years at least. I wasn’t sure how I knew that either. I just did. The thing was, I didn’t understand how or why it was going to take a few years. And that worried me. What was about to go down that I’d have to wait so damn long to have him by my side?

The air grew so thick, my lungs had trouble dragging it in. I shuffled my butt, fighting against the unbearable tug urging my eyes to connect with his. “It was nice of you to help out the opposition, even though they couldn’t find a uniform that fit you.”

He placed his arms on the table, his elbow bumping mine. It was the final yank in the tug-of-war. My gaze snapped to his crystal blue stare.

A hint of a smirk played on his lips. “It’s no biggie.” Deliberately bumping my elbow again, he set his grin free.

He’s laughing at me! My mouth popped open before clamping shut.

The rest of our group approached through the glass, trays in hand. Their arrival would mean the end of our conversation. Last chance to make an impression. “Yeah, you’re right. Their team lost. You were no help at all. I don’t know why Dad whinged that you’re not a league player. Seriously, you sucked. Stick to what you know, Benji.”

Ben’s grin dropped off his face, and his eyebrows jumped high as he barked a laugh.

Like idiots, we grinned at each other, and something more passed between us. That thing that I couldn’t yet define, but saw behind the gaze reflecting back my smiling face. It was so familiar. I’d seen it before. I knew it.

Unbelievably, his face aged ten years in ten seconds. Suddenly he was a man with the beginnings of wrinkles fanning from his eyes. And I was ... huge. I checked myself out. A wedding ring dug into my swollen finger. My stomach was round and full. And moving. We were both naked. Naked!

My gaze snapped back to his, finding his face in transition again. Light reflected off his bright blue irises, splitting into a prism of colour before swirling and blending into a muddy dark brown. A colour that could swallow you whole if you let it.

Emmeline.” I saw his mouth move, but it wasn’t Ben. I was staring at a young man with scruffy brown hair, sweat and dirt smeared on his neck. “Emmeline,” he pleaded.

Who was Emmeline? Who was he?

A dragon-shifter, in love with a human @DavidBurnett #PNR #Charleston #giveaway

Dragon Mist cover

Blurb

As the third daughter of a third daughter, dragon-shifter Christine Drachen must mate with a human.

Not all human males are genetically compatible with dragon shifters, and suitable matches are rare in old Charleston. Christine, though, has identified James to be an appropriate match. Even humans who acknowledge the possibility of dragons cannot believe that one can be both a dragon and a human, shifting between the two. As a result, Christine must attract James without fully revealing her true, shifting nature until he has committed to mate.

James gradually discovers what Christine is. She shows him the gold dragon she always wears around her neck. He notices the prints, statues, and tapestries of dragons that decorate her family’s home. Strange noises emanate from behind the Drachens’ house during a party, and James believes he actually sees a dragon, one wearing a necklace like Christine’s. Christine’s last name, Drachen, means “dragon,” and, while she jokes her entire family is composed of the creatures, James begins to suspect there is more to what she says than a simple attempt at humor.

Finally, though, he sees her shift.

To protect their species from persecution, dragon-shifters silence any human who sees one of them shift, and the most practical method is generally death. The rule is absolute. But Christine has fallen in love with James. How can she protect her family without killing the boy she loves?

Dragon Mist is a story of boy-meets-girl, with a few non-human characters, high stakes, a bit of magic, a little humor, and an abundance of romance.

Excerpt

Had Bing known my species, he would not be treating me as one of the skinny blond coeds who devote themselves to jocks, helping them celebrate their victories, consoling them in defeat, and distracting them at all times in between.

I am a drache,” I murmur.

Bing chuckles. “You’re drunk? Is that what you said?”

He bends his head and kisses me on my mouth. I jerk my head back, and he laughs.

Girls like my kisses, Dragon Lady. They truly do.”

He places his free hand on the back of my head to hold me in place for a second, extended kiss.

Drache is a variant of the German word for dragon, as is my last name, Drachen—pronounced drah-ken, with an ‘A’ as in father, rather than drake-en or drack-en. The names were not random choices, nor is my amulet, the gold dragon, as beautiful as it is, a random piece of jewelry.

Our family story tells how the Great Dragon decreed his followers should mate with humans in the hope of creating an omnipotent species, and the draches were their offspring. In our view, we comprise a separate species of human being, homo sapiens draco.

When we discuss our heritage, we speak of our “inner dragons,” whatever it is within us that is the basis for our superior intelligence, our great strength, our emotional intuitiveness, and our ability to shift, to transform, to summon our “outer dragons” in times of danger.

Bing is truly playing with fire.

Only he doesn’t know it.

The Tale of the Book Trailer -- #Electricity #BookTrailer #ParanormalRomance @GemWriter

Electricity cover

By Claire Gem (Guest Blogger)

What is a book trailer?

That’s the question I’m asked when I tell people I’m working on the trailer for my next book. Yes, we novelists borrowed the idea from the movie industry. Like an aperitif before an elegant meal, a trailer whets the appetite of our readers. It also gives the author an opportunity to introduce our readers, visually, to the world in which our book is set (for me it’s usually an old, haunted place) and to our characters.

I mean, I can see them in my head. I’d like for my readers to have an idea what they look like as well. This isn’t always as easy as it sounds.

My book trailers are created on iMovie, which is a wonderful tool (if you are a Mac user). I use photographs rather than video clips, adding text either directly on the photos or on black screens in between. The entire experience can’t be longer than a minute and a half, or you lose your audience’s attention. Who would think that putting together a 1.5-minute video could take dozens of hours?

Yet, it does. First, I have to figure out how to condense my entire book down into about 25 or 30 words. Yup, it’s even more difficult than the dreaded back cover blurb, which should run about 175 words. Photos help. Finding them is the greatest challenge.

I will admit, I usually go searching for photos of my hero and heroine before I even write the book. That makes them real in my head, and I keep those pics on my desktop. They are constantly there, reminding me to get to work on my manuscript.

We have a story to tell, damn it! Get busy! You are our only voice.

Where do I find them? I start on royalty-free sites like Pixabay, because of course any photos I use for the trailer or cover have to be royalty-free. If I can’t find them there, my next go-to site is 123rf.com because they have small, affordable packages. If my characters aren’t there either, Depositphotos is next, but they are markedly more expensive.

Once I have my characters, and the book is written, it’s time to find trailer pictures. I try to pick the highlights of the story—those intense and conflicted moments that reflect the themes. On the paid photo sites I can often find multiple shots of the same people—my characters—in different situations, which helps. Sometimes I have to settle for distant, blurred, or silhouette views which tie in with the photos I have.

For my latest release, ELECTRICITY, I actually took many of the photographs of the old mental asylum myself. I work on a campus of what used to be a state mental hospital, and although most of the buildings have either been renovated or razed, one remains. Hulking, ominous, and crumbling, it sits on the highest point of the grounds, abandoned. I managed to persuade the facilities manager to take me through the condemned building a few years ago, when I told him I intended to write a book about it. The photos that appear in the book trailer are very real, taken with my own camera.

Then, the music—one of the most important parts of a book trailer—also has to either be royalty-free, or you have to pay for the rights to use the piece. For ELECTRICITY, I was lucky enough to have a friend, Christopher Caouette, who composes epic and fantasy music. I asked him if he had any pieces that might be suitable for this trailer, and he suggested “From The Peaks,” which is perfect. He sold me the rights to use it for this trailer for a song. No pun intended.

So now that you know how difficult and time-consuming it is to create a book trailer, I invite you to enjoy the fruits of my labor – ELECTRICITY: A Haunted Voices Novel.

Blurb

She’s an electrician starting over with her son. New job. New town. New life.

He’s a coworker who’s interested in more than her ability to run conduit.

The building they’re rewiring was once an insane asylum. It seems some of the patients never left.

Mercedes Donohue pulled up roots in Atlanta when her marriage imploded. She’s come back to New England, to the place where she was born. Mercy’s focus is to stabilize her teenage son’s life—he took the breakup pretty hard—and to establish her place, gain the respect of Progressive Electrical’s team.

She never expected so many sparks to fly so soon, both on the job and after hours.

Daniel Gallagher has been alone since his fiancé’s death. He’ll never feel that way about any woman again, and certainly won’t try with another independent, strong-willed one. Then Mercy short-circuits his plans.

Although the asylum closed its doors over thirty-five years ago, they discover quickly that the place is haunted.

If you like a heart-melting romance laced with healthy dose of supernatural thrills and chills, you’ll love Electricity.

Excerpt

Mercy reached around for her purse, tucked behind her seat, the one she never carried to work. No phone.

Damn it, she thought. I’ve left it at the job.

Not that it was a big deal. The campus was only a mile away, and she knew security was on duty all night. All she had to do was stop in at their make-shift office in the little brown house, ask access permission to the Gravely Hall and find her phone. No big deal at all.

It was almost dark by the time she pulled up to the Campus Police building. The sleepy-looking young officer who accompanied her back out into the parking lot seemed almost grateful for the distraction. He tailed her car in his cruiser to Gravely Hall. Mercy followed him up onto the mildewed steps as he used a key from a huge metal ring to open the padlock.

Do you have a flashlight, Miss?” The young patrolman stepped aside as the door opened, seeming reluctant to accompany Mercy into the old building. The long shadows of evening had already stamped the interior into dense gloom.

Yeah, no problem,” she grinned at the greenhorn cop. “I’ll be back in just a minute.”

The musty smell and odd air quality seemed amplified in the growing darkness. Mercy strode confidently toward the broad staircase at the end of the great hall and snapped on the flashlight she always kept hooked to a loop on her overalls. She must have left her phone in the small anteroom, she thought. She must have laid it down after Reagan called her earlier that afternoon and failed to pick it up when she was packing up her tools.

Access to the lower level was at the far end of the great central room, and some pale light still slithered in through the greenish glass panes of the windows near the head of the stairs. As she descended the creaking boards, a smothering calm increasingly muffled all sound. Mercy felt an instinctive impulse to reach for a light switch, but of course, there was none, at least none in working order.

In the waning glow of daylight seeping in through the high basement windows, she could make out the shapes of the porcelain tubs, standing in a sentinel row. A damp shiver ran up and down her back. Mercy straightened her shoulders and cleared her throat.

I’ll just go directly into the anteroom where I’d been working, she thought, and retrieve my phone. Then I’m outta here.

She’d gotten to the open doorway of the small space when she heard the sound. A water sound, almost like waves lapping at the edge of a pool. Or on the sides of a bathtub: that soft sound of liquid kissing its solid prison walls. The tubs along the back wall weren’t even connected to a water source anymore. They’d been dry and littered with small chunks of dusty debris when she and Daniel worked around them earlier today. Some still wore their mildewed, leather coverings.

Mercy hurried directly toward the room she’d last worked in, her light flashing wildly through the mostly empty space. She aimed the beam into the gaping hole of the toilet, but it was as dry as it had been earlier in the day. Struggling to ignore the increasingly loud sloshing sound, reverberating now louder and louder all around her, she located the black wedge of her cell phone. It was lying abandoned on the concrete windowsill. She snatched it up, clutching it tight to her chest. The hard-plastic case felt reassuring in her grasp.

As she crossed the central room, the water sound echoed in the space around her, seeming to get louder with every step. Her heart hammered in her chest, and she quickened her pace. Almost there.

Mercy.

Resonating above the sloshing sounds, she could swear she’d heard her name. Mercy jolted to a stop and spun around. The sound had come from behind her, it seemed. Or had she imagined it?

It must be the security officer. He must be calling from the head of the stairs.

Hello?” Mercy called out. Her voice reverberated so loudly it startled her. “I’ll be right up,” she called again, and flashed her light beam in a path straight toward the stairs.

Mercy!

The voice came again, louder now. Wheezing and feeble, it sounded like that of a very old man, or a very sick one. Had one of the homeless sought refuge here for the night? A jumble of thoughts tumbled through Mercy’s mind, panic obliterating the logical portion.

How would anyone even know her name?

A veil of clammy perspiration blanketed every inch of her skin. Dank basement air threatened to seep right through her. Clutching her phone to her chest, she jabbed the flashlight beam wildly with her other hand, back and forth across the wide expanse of the room. The ray glanced off the white porcelain shapes, transforming them into hulking ghosts standing in ominous formation.

Who’s there?” she shrieked. Her voice echoed and bounced back to her in empty coldness.

Mercy…

This third time the voice was faint, fading, melting into the mysterious water sounds which ebbed like the receding of an ocean wave. Silence ballooned around her, black and deafening, enveloping all sound except for the wild pounding of her pulse in her ears. Mercy fought the panic rising into her throat and broke into a full run toward the steps. To the exit, where the officer was waiting for her. Toward safety.

Destined to be Lycan mates - #pnr #shapeshifters #giveaway @Kristal081670

Blurb

From the first, Michael Faolan and Natalie Terrence knew they were destined to be Lycan mates, but constant danger in Michael's life keeps them separated. They are stalked by the hunters, a group of men who plan to eradicate all Lycan as vermin. Natalie refuses to acknowledge the bond that she has with Michael until hunters burn down his barn and he is gravely injured. She cannot resist his call, even with the threat hanging over his head. Michael Faolan has secrets of his own, but he is happy to accept Natalie's ministrations. Their attraction ignites into flames of passion as they continue to fight the hunters. Could his secrets dampen the hunger Natalie feels for her mate, or can they use that desire to build a family and forge a love so strong no man, woman, or beast can tear them apart?

Excerpt

Pale moonlight descended over Heather Ridge, adding a menacing air to its aged appearance. Her eyes slowly lifted to the second-floor windows as she thought of Michael. He dominated her every moment and had secretly become her own private obsession. She felt his eyes. She sensed his presence. Silver orbs gazed back from the dingy, dark windows. Her hand involuntarily came up to rub the base of her throat. She couldn’t look away, spellbound in the moment. Her feet refused to move. It felt like forever passed when the outline of his body finally turned away from the window.

Natalie’s nervous laugh broke the eerie silence of the twilight. The porch light turned on at that exact moment, and she jumped. Her breath caught in her lungs and she doubled over gasping for air. She chided herself for being afraid and shook her head. She was Lycan, a predator, and she belonged in the night, but the wind refused to support her confidence as it moaned through the forest.

Natalie shivered and rubbed her arms as gray fog leaked from the forest. It swirled around the corners of the house just as her feet climbed to the top of the limestone steps. She stopped only for a moment and watched with wide eyes as it creeped slowly up the steps behind her. With her back against the front door, she turned the door knob. The front door creaked as she pushed it open then slammed shut with a loud bang.
