Montana Roots - #giveaway #NativeAmerican #Montana @ConstanceBretes

Tour banner

By Constance Bretes (Guest Blogger)

Before I moved to Alabama last Spring, I lived in a tiny little town called Basin, in Montana. The population was about 250 people. I made some really nice friends there, and a few of my friends became my readers who enjoyed reading my romance books. They asked me if I’d consider writing a romance centered around a small town in Montana, like Basin.

Basin sits in a small valley surrounded by mountains. Off to the north of Basin sits Boulder, Montana, and Elkhorn Mountains. Basin is also known as a miner’s town. At one point, there were three mines in operation, searching for gold and silver, and the town grew to over a thousand residents. When the mines dried up, it reduced the population, and left some empty buildings in its wake. Some of those empty buildings were at one time, considered brothels. The only things now operating in Basin, is a pizza place, a restaurant and bar, a post office, two radon mines and a grade school.

In addition to all this, there was a couple of railroad tunnels that went through Basin. It actually at one point, came from Helena and traveled down to Butte. The rail tracks are long gone, but the tunnels remain. Not too far from Basin, is a ghost town called Comet. The pictures attached are the Comet mine, and the old tunnel that is in Basin.

My story, Elkhorn In The Moonlight, was generated from this information. I changed the name of the town to Mason, and I added one more business to the town, a small motel, which I situated at the same location of what is now currently called Earth Angel. Some of the characters represented are some of the residents that lives there, including my husband and I, but all the names are different. The restaurant and bar, along with the pizza place, the post office and the school are in the story, as well as the three mines. Everything was renamed so to not put anyone on the spot or violate anyone’s privacy.

I’m giving away an ebook copy of Elkhorn InThe Moonlight and an ebook from my backlist during the tour. Please use the Rafflecopter below to enter. Remember there is a chance to enter everyday so be sure to follow the Blog Tour. You may find the tour schedule and locations here https://goo.gl/WosRX4

Her mundane life suddenly becomes more exciting when Marcus arrives in town asking about some arrows that she came upon years ago while hiking in the Elkhorn Mountains. The gorgeous man makes her heart beat fast, but she knows he’d never be interested in a Plain Jane like herself.

When Marcus offers Nicole a large sum of cash to lead him to the cave where she saw the arrows, she takes him up on the offer. After a three-day hiking trip through the mountains they locate the cave, but then the unthinkable happens, and they find themselves trapped inside. You pass it every time you go into Mason. The other two are on the other side of the overpass. Sandpiper Mine you can see from the highway, but you have to go on Gulch Mine to get to the Elkhorn Mountains. The mountain ranges there are the highest, and there are a lot of vertical drops, so you’d have to travel where you can walk it. It’s not something where you can climb it and be there. You have to go in a roundabout way.”

Do you have a very clear vision of where this cave is, and how to get to it?” he asked.

Yes. I remember it clear as day now.”

How soon can you get yourself ready for the hike?”

What? I’m not going there. You are. I can’t just take off and leave, I have work to do. Plus, it’s way too cold to go there right now. The mountains in that area still have snow on them.”

You think I would know where to go by the information that you provided?”

I gave you very good information,” she said.

Do you have the coordinates for GPS?”

No. I don’t.”

So, you think that I, who have never traveled these mountains before, would have no problem finding that cave?” Marcus’s eyes narrowed as he regarded her.

I don’t have any idea how you intend to get there. Personally, I think you should wait until summer to do it. The weather in the mountains is unpredictable.”

Marcus sat thinking about the situation for a second, and then he said, “Name your price.”

Huh?” “I said, name your price,” he repeated. “I need you to lead me to that cave, and I have to do it this week.”

You’re not listening to me. I can’t take you there. I have work to do here. I can’t leave to go on a weeklong camping trip.”

You can for a price,” he said grimly.

You can’t buy me off to get what you want,” Nicole said defensively.

Everyone is willing to do certain things for a certain price. Will thirty thousand get you interested and willing to go?”

I…I…thirty thousand? No, I won’t be bought,” she stammered.

Look, Nicole. Let’s quit with the games. I’m going to go there to get those Sacred Arrows, and you are the one who is going to take me there and bring me back. I’m offering you thirty thousand for a week…week and a half of work. I think your brother and his wife can handle the motel for that length of time.”

I’m sorry.” She stopped for a few seconds. “I won’t be bullied. My answer is no.” She stood up to leave.

Just think about this. Like I said, thirty thousand for a week and a half of work. Think what you could do with that money. Think of all the possibilities and opportunities you’d have. As for the weather, I know you have lived through worse weather right here in Mason. You know what to expect. I would not let you go up there without your GPS, your cellphone and satellite phone, your two-way radio, and letting your brother know exactly where you’re at should there ever be an emergency. I’ll give you until tomorrow at noon to tell me your decision, and if I were you, I’d think about this very seriously. I intend to have my way in this,” he said sternly. Grabbing his maps and the pictures she gave him, he walked back to the causeway and to his room.

Howard had been talking nonstop for twenty minutes. Each time Petey thought she’d found the opportunity to extricate herself, he continued his rambling, while edging ever closer, invading her personal space, and chatting about his work and his home in New Jersey. He seemed to be one of those individuals who was completely inept at picking up on social cues.

She’d just worked up the gumption to simply excuse herself the next time he came up for air, when she heard a familiar voice.

There you are, darling!” Nik swooped in, handing her a glass of wine. “I’m so sorry I’m late. Will you ever forgive me?” He wrapped an arm around her waist and kissed her cheek.

Stunned, Petey stammered a bit. “Um, yes. Well…darling, yes, you certainly are late. What’s up with that? I’ve been waiting for you.”

I know. But traffic was a nightmare, what with the rain. You just wouldn’t believe it.” Nik turned to Howard. “Who’s your friend?” He smiled pleasantly at the confused man.

Oh, sorry. Nik, this is Howard. Howard, meet Nik.”

Howard worked his mouth, but was blissfully silent.

Nik reached to shake his hand. “So nice to meet you. If you’ll excuse us, I need to make up for lost time. Come, darling.”

He grasped Petey’s hand and led her to the opposite side of the gallery. When they reached a quiet corner, he turned and smiled at her.

She gave a relieved laugh. “Oh, my God, for the second time tonight, you saved my bacon.”

Nik laughed, too. “The exasperation on your face said that you needed rescuing. Who was he anyway?”

Some guy that my friend Jules thought I should meet. I mean, he’s nice enough, but he had absolutely no sense of personal space. And he would notstop talking. Sheesh!”

He’s probably just shy in the presence of such a pretty woman.” Nik’s blue eyes sparkled.

Petey rolled her eyes. “Yes, I’m sure that’s it,” she said sarcastically. “I guess you ditched your business dinner?”

Nik nodded. “I did.”

She eyed him curiously. “What kind of business are you in?”

He paused a beat. “I’m in international finance and development.”

Warmth flooded her face, and she knew she was blushing. A sheepish smile curled her lips. “I have no idea what that means.”

He smiled, too. “I travel and meet with business people, mostly, occasionally politicians, and we discuss ways to improve our national economies, and ways to assist developing economies as well.”

Oh. I’m sure Jules would understand completely. She has a sharp business mind. I’m just so,” she gave a self-deprecating chuckle, “right-brained.”

She fanned herself lightly with her hand. “So, you’d had enough of finances and development for one night?”

Nik nodded agreeably. “I’ve worked all day. As I sat listening to more business conversation, all I could think was that I’d like to attend the gallery opening of a promising young sculptor.”

Petey’s eyes sparkled mischievously. “Well, if I hear of any, I’ll let you know.” They both laughed together.

I just watched your video. Such an interesting way to introduce yourself to patrons.”

Oh, that.” Petey blushed. “Jules flew out to Montana a couple of months ago. She hired a film crew to follow me for a day, do interviews and stuff. Then they just put it together.”

He regarded her curiously, eyes sparkling. “What are the chances you’d give me a guided tour of this incredible exhibit?”

She pretended to consider his request. “Well, you did see to it that I was put back together after being blasted by that tidal wave. And, you rescued me from being talked to death by a close-talking dentist. I’d say your odds are pretty good.” She laughed. “I think bringing me a glass of wine put you over the top, though.”

Nik laughed, too. “Lucky for me, then.”

Lucky for you. Okay, let’s take a tour.”

Treasure in the Montana mountains -- @ConstanceBretes #SmallTownRomance #Montana #rafflecopter

Montana mountains

By Constance Bretes (Guest Blogger)

My husband and I love to go sapphire digging, and gold panning up in the mountains behind our home. We brought property in Montana some years back, that had mining rights along the Missouri River, where we could dig for sapphires. The name of the place is Eldorado Heights Bar. There are several of these types of places in our area, there is the Spokane Bar, and The American Bar all nearby and along the Missouri River. Back in the early 1900s, miners searched for gold along the river, and as they dug, they kept finding these colored stones. Not knowing what they were, the miners cast them off to the side as the continued to dread the area for gold.

Later, it was learned that the colored stones, were indeed sapphires, rubies and garnets.

This was not the only place in Montana where you could find these gems and gold. Philipsburg, Alden, and a few other places have sapphires and gold. The town of Philipsburg was of great interest to us. It is a small, historical town and was used as a backdrop for my story, Blue As Sapphires. In the story, I changed Philipsburg to Frankenburg because I’ve added some things that Philipsburg did not have. But one area that my husband and I was very interested in was Gem Mountains. It had a mining operation there. The owners went into the mountains and dug a couple of truckloads of gravel and brought it to the base of the mountain for visitors who could either search through the gravel there or buy buckets of gravel, to dig for Sapphires. There are also claims along the Rock Creek River of gold. My love for these things found its way into my ebook, Blue As Sapphires

Blurb

Marissa's home was her haven, until Riley invaded her space.

Escaping from her abusive ex-husband, Marissa Simpson returns to her hometown to start over. She spends her days working at the local jewelry store, and the rest of her time is dedicated to mining along Red Rock River, searching for precious gems. Marissa has no intention of getting involved with another man, or with the community she left behind all those years ago. That is, until Riley McCade shows up.

Riley is the Sheriff of Quartz County. He loves his community and goes out of his way to protect and serve. When he meets up with Marissa, he's bound and determined to get to know her even though she insists she's not interested.

The more Riley learns about Marissa's past, the more he concludes that she may be in danger. When her ex-husband shows up, can Riley protect her? And can he earn her love in the process?

Excerpt

Hello, Sheriff. What can I do for you today?”

I thought you would have listened to me and reconsidered trying to make this place livable again.”

Nope, I’m going to try to make a go of it.”

Riley splayed his hand on the back of his neck and gave her a small smile. “You need to go to the county office and get an inspector to come out here and determine what needs to be taken care of before you make this your home. The house has to be up to code.”

And if I don’t?” she said evenly.

I’d have to serve you with a notice and remove you from the premises until the house meets the building code.”

Really,” she replied in a low voice, taut with anger. “I guess I’ll contact the inspector tomorrow and see when I can get someone out. Is that all, Sheriff?”

For now. Tell me, Marissa, how have you been?” Riley asked. “You haven’t been here
in a long time.”

I’m doing well. Thank you,” she replied icily. A suggestion of annoyance hovered in her eyes.

So, are you married? Do you have children?”

No, and no, and why?”

It seemed to Riley that Marissa was being evasive and noncommittal. She sure was an attractive woman, maybe a little too thin, but she had a lovely face and perfect rose-colored lips. Something about her piqued his interest.

I just wondered how you were. Is this the first time you’ve been back to Frankenburg since high school?”

Yes.”

What brings you back?”

I wanted to come back.” She crossed her arms over her chest.

He was aware of her annoyance, he tried to coax her into a better mood, but failed.

Marissa, if you’d like, I could make you an offer on the twenty acres of land. That would giveyou enough money to buy a nice home in town and live more comfortably than you would here.”

Why are you so bent on me leaving this house?” Marissa shot him a cold look, uncrossing her arms and squeezing her hands into fists.

I’m not bent on anything, but I told you before I think the house is dangerous to live in.”

Well, it’s my problem, so I’d appreciate it if you would mind your own business.”

Why are you so testy? We’re a tight community here in Frankenburg, you know that. We look out for each other and try to help when we can. I’m only trying to be neighborly and keep you safe.”

I’m not interested in you being neighborly and keeping me safe. I’m capable of taking care of myself, and I don’t need any help.”

All right, Marissa, but you get that inspector out here as soon as possible.” Riley’s voice was smooth, but insistent.

Yes, Sheriff.” She spat out the words contemptuously, did a mock salute, whirled around, walked into the house, and slammed the door in his face.
