Review Tuesday moved to Thursday! Truth or Daire by Keta Diablo -- #ReviewTuesday #EroticRomance #Novella

Truth or Daire cover

Truth or Daire by Keta Diablo
Kindle Desktop Publishing, 2020

Cagney Kissler has been saving her V-card for that special someone. When her good-looking, fast-talking temporary flatmate Daire finally manages to seduce her, she wonders why she waited so long. Then she comes home from her job at Bloomingdale’s with her brand new, sexy lingerie, anticipating another night of delirious pleasure, and discovers he’s a lazy, lying cheat who’s just using her so he’ll have a place to crash. She kicks him out, but the damage to her self-esteem is not so easily repaired.

Fortunately, she has already planned a week-long winter escape to visit her best friend Lily in Fort Myers, Florida. The warm sun and the tropical environment are just what she needs to help her get over her heartache. When she meets Evan Truth – gorgeous, wealthy, considerate and insightful – she discovers how shallow her feelings for Daire really were. Evan’s kiss ignites her; his touch drives her crazy with desire. Meanwhile he’s such a decent, generous soul that she can’t help falling in love. But Cagney’s time in Florida is short and she knows Evan can never be more than a holiday fling. Flying back to her empty life in frigid, gray Chicago might be the hardest thing she’s ever done.

Truth or Daire is a brief but engaging erotic romance that does a fantastic job portraying the connection between two soul mates. The love scenes are gorgeous, while the deliciously described Florida setting reflects the warmth of Cagney’s and Evan’s connection. This 46 page novella provides a full narrative arc, with a conflict centered on the physical and psychological distance between the protagonists’ lives. Cagney’s wrenching parting from her beloved had me aching for her. However, this conflict is rapidly resolved in the last few pages and the happy ending assured. Indeed the obstacles dissolve, perhaps because they existed only in Cagney’s mind to start with.

Although it feels complete, this book was too short for my tastes. Ms. Diablo doesn’t have the word count to go into any depth. For instance, Evan is a veteran of the Afghan war, but we never really get to see how that (presumably horrific) experience affected him. We also know very little about the heroine, other than the fact that she’s a bit naïve and certainly more conservative than her rather wild Florida girlfriend. Truth or Daire offers a mere sketch of a relationship between two characters whom I’d like to know better.

Of course the answer to the implicit question in the book title was always Evan, but Daire reappears near the end, in a great scene that shows how far Cagney has come in a short time. I think Daire could have become more than just a brief comic relief. The same is true with Lily. It seems a shame to create such colorful characters but not take advantage of them.

In general, I have a personal preference for longer books. If, on the contrary, you’re looking for a quick romance hit, with lingering sweetness and luscious heat, Truth or Daire may be just the thing.

Excerpt

By the time I reach the hotel, I’m soaked clear through to my skin. My long hair is drenched and drips down my chest, leaving massive droplets on my new spring coat. What the hell was I thinking when I asked the cabbie to drop me off two blocks away? I mean, who would see me, and even if they did, why would they question my destination?

I enter through the main doors and walk into the lobby. The desk clerk looks up but I smile and find my way to the elevator. He doesn’t try to stop me or ask if he can assist me. He must think I have an air of independence about me, despite my wet-hen look.

My breathing is erratic by the time I ride the elevator to the fifth floor. I follow the signs posted on the wall that direct me to room 510. I hesitate and tap my head with a closed fist. What am I doing here?

A man opens the door after my three light taps. He’s tall with broad shoulders, a narrow waist and lean hips. Sort of like my Michael I guess and then tell myself not to go there.

You’re soaked,” he says through the black hood with only narrow slits where his eyes should be.

This puts me at a disadvantage right away. He can see my eyes but I don’t have the slightest idea what color his are. “Yes, I got caught in the rain.”

The words fly into my head before I can stop them. I like Pina Coladas, and getting caught in the rain. I'm not much into health food, I am into champagne.

With a flourish of his arm, he directs me into the room. It’s luxurious, opulent and well-furnished. A four-poster bed sits center stage, companioned by two nightstands, one on each side. Near the window, there’s a sitting area, two plush, magenta wingbacks separated by another small table.

The bathroom door is ajar, but I don’t allow my gaze to linger there. I’m too nervous to think about anything except the hooded man standing in the center of the room and the reason I’m standing there in front of him.

Well, that’s convenient . . . getting caught in the rain, I mean. Take your clothes off and I’ll drape them over the wingbacks. Hopefully they’ll dry a little.”

I mutter a feeble thank you and begin to undress. He watches me with morbid fascination, and I wonder how many times he’s done this before.

I assume you brought cash. Most bring cash, nothing traceable.”

I nod.

Lay it on the nightstand and then take a seat on the slat-backed chair at the foot of the bed.”

Naked, you mean.”

Well, there wouldn’t be much sense conducting our session in wet clothes, would there?”

No, I guess not.”

If you were to ask me what happened next, other than a vague memory of me removing my clothing, laying the money on the night table and walking naked to the chair he pointed to, I couldn’t tell you. Everything from that moment on meshed together until I heard my own voice echo through the quiet solitude of the hotel room.

Yes, oh, yes!”

Excerpt

Perhaps you’d care to tell me your name and why you were snooping about my private property?”

Craven Saunders, sir, and we weren’t snooping―”

What do you call it, young man, agate-picking?” He shook his head, his voice stern. “I detest it when someone lies to me. If you’re determined to spy on others, be man enough to admit it.”

Yes, sir.”

Yes, sir, what?”

Craven’s tone took on the innocent pleading of a child. “We were spying, Mr. Beresford, but I promise it won’t happen again.”

Oh, I’ve no doubt about that, Mr. Saunders.” He arched his neck, the sleek, hair shining like onyx beneath the candlelight in the room. “I must inform you, my valet, Higginbotham, claims you’ve been spying for weeks. Knowing Higginbotham is an honest man, I conducted an investigation myself last Friday eve.” The man swiped a hand across his erotic mouth, the gesture turning Craven’s knees to marmalade and his already dry throat to an arid desert.

Craven hung his head. Damn, he could do nothing but confess. “Your man spoke the truth.”

When Craven garnered the courage to look at him again, the man gave a shake of his head. “Craven, an odd name, is it not?”

Yes, sir,” he interjected. “It means―”

I know what it means―weak, spineless, fearful.” The world tilted on its axis when the man took another step toward him and raked him over with those deep blue orbs. “Do the adjectives describe you, Saunders?”

No, Mr. Beresford, sir, I don’t believe they do.”

He studied the man, captivated by smooth, silky cadence of his voice. If indeed Beresford stood before him, Anthony couldn’t have been more correct. Magnificently stunning, he oozed male virility. The dim light of the bedchamber could not hide it. His mouth full, his nose straight, every feature of his face must have been crafted by a skilled artisan, or, perhaps, a patient God. Craven couldn’t drag his gaze away from the man’s luminescent orbs. His stomach somersaulted and he longed to be touched by him, fucked senseless. Had he been out in the sun too long that day?

Well, we shall test the theory about your namesake.” The man’s languid once-over sent shivers down his spine. Closing the remaining distance between them, he took Craven’s chin between his thumb and index finger and forced him to look into those piercing eyes. “What makes you think my name is Beresford?”

A hot read spiced with BDSM - #gayromance #dominance #submission @KetaDiablo

Blurb

The dreaded day had arrived. And this year, February 14th, had a dual meaning. Since his breakup a month ago with his boyfriend, Valentine Giovanni, Deke’s life seemed meaningless. What had he expected? The moment Val found out he’d cheated on him, the shit hit the fan... and Deke’s shoes hit the pavement.

He didn’t have time to explain why he cheated, and Val wouldn’t believe him. Val deserved better, a submissive that completely trusted him, who’d commit wholly to his rough sex and demands. So rather than talk over his fears and insecurities, Deke forced a breakup by exposing a liaison with another man.

It was a painful scene, an angry, gut-wrenching debacle that ended in a screaming match. Deke thought he’d feel relief when it was over, but every day was more dismal than the last, and all he felt was emptiness. He’d never loved anyone like he loved Val. He realized that now.

And tonight, he planned to grovel and beg for forgiveness, prove his love to the man.

* Scorchingly hot (handcuffs, bondage, spanking)

* Standalone novella

* No cliffhangers

* Happily-Ever-After

Excerpt

Val’s rage filled up the empty space between them. It radiated off him like hot vapors. Deke realized so many things at that moment, his stupid compulsiveness, his underestimation of what made Val tick. Even if Val decided to give him another chance, and that was a big if, Deke would have to regain his trust, prove he could take whatever his Dom dished out. Right now, both seemed insurmountable.

Deke closed the distance between them again. “I’m asking for another chance. I won’t ever hurt you again, and deep down, I know I make you happy.”

Val stared at him and pushed a long lock of ebony hair from his forehead. When his blue eyes bore into his, Deke almost dropped to his knees and begged.

This is something you realized just now?”

No, I realized it in the month we’ve been apart. I dissected every moment of our relationship, tore apart every fiber and reason for my indiscretion.”

Ha!” Another curt laugh from Val. “Is that how you dismiss cheating, call it an indiscretion. Jesus, Deke, I don’t know whether to laugh at the absurdity or cry over the stupidity.” He blew a long puff of exasperated air. “Why should I believe you wouldn’t cheat again?”

Stammering like a school boy, he said, “I’ll prove it to you, do anything you ask.”

Anything?”

Yes.” His heart thudded at the thought of what Val would demand from him. “I’ll do whatever it takes to have you back in my life again, like it was before.”

Your punishment will be severe.”

Deke swallowed, hard. “I expect it to be. I can take it; let me come home with you and prove it.”

Review Tuesday: Chasing the Dead - #ReviewTuesday #WesternRomance #Ghosts

Chasing the Dead cover

Chasing the Dead: A Western Romance by Keta Diablo
Keta Diablo, 2019

In New Mexico, in 1884, spirits disturb the world of the living.

Madrid Arrende does not have her late mother’s power to exorcise ghosts, but the Mexican peasants who live on or around her wealthy father’s hacienda believe that she has inherited Celesta’s supernatural abilities. In fact, her mother’s fame has even reached the hostile Apaches, who kidnap Maddie in the hope that she can banish the vicious, vengeful spirit terrorizing their village. Proud and violent even in life, Uday murdered the father of Sacheen, the woman he wanted, when the father refused to force Sacheen to wed him. Sacheen’s brother killed Uday in a fair fight, but the spurned brave refused to move on to the spirit world. Instead, the vicious wraith threatens the entire tribe in his lust to possess Sacheen, even from beyond the grave.

Deacon and Gideon Bannister live with a different sort of ghost. Seven years ago, an Apache war party attacked their ranch, killed their parents and abducted their sisters Callie and Tess. The brothers can’t rest until they’ve tracked down the missing young women. In fact, Deacon broke off his engagement with Maddie because he felt that the search for his sisters had to take first priority.

Nevertheless, when Madrid’s father enlists Deacon’s aid in recovering his daughter, Deacon quickly agrees. He has realized his mistake in rejecting the beautiful, independent young woman. Though she is now engaged to someone else, Deacon is determined not only to save her from the Indians, but to win back her love – if the tribe, or the demonic Uday, do not kill them first.

Chasing the Dead is a short but satisfying Western romance with a generous dash of the paranormal. In fact, I’m not usually a fan of the Western genre, which tends toward stereotypes and anachronisms. However, Keta Diablo obviously did extensive research for this book, especially with regard to Apache language and customs. I’m no expert, but the book feels genuine.

The plot is surprisingly complex and the cast of characters more extensive than I’d expect in a book of only 110 pages (in epub format). Even the minor characters, such as Nasario the Mexican shaman and the Bannister’s youngest brother Sefton, have some depth. The main protagonists are both distinctive and appealing. In particular, I loved the portrayal of Sacheen. She’s fierce and loyal, with a world view that contrasts with that of the whites and the Mexicans.

Probably my favorite aspect of Chasing the Dead was the chilling and vivid depictions of the ghost and the underworld. The Apache version of Hell looks quite different from our Western version. I loved the intensity and the originality.

The book does merit the label of romance. It’s no surprise when Madrid breaks off her engagement to cleave to Deacon, or when Gideon and Sacheen fall in love. However, the romantic and erotic aspects of the novel were overshadowed, for me, by the fascinating cultural details and the supernatural elements.

I have one complaint about the book. I felt that the chapters were too short. I understand the author’s intentions. She is juggling four major characters, and needs to alternate among them in order to get her story told. However, because she spends only three or four pages in each perspective, I ended up feeling a bit rushed – almost out of breath.

Still, Ms. Diablo does an excellent job tying all the threads together – and laying the foundations for a sequel, without leaving the reader on the edge of cliff. Overall, I definitely enjoyed Chasing the Dead.

Ancient Myths, Secret Lore

By Keta Diablo (Guest Blogger)

What is it we love about the paranormal and all the creatures that haunt these worlds? In part, I think the possibility they might exist or at one time existed fascinates us. It's more interesting to read about creatures/humans with supernatural powers than it is to read about the common, mundane man. The supernatural/paranormal are also fascinating to research, create and write.

When I wrote The Sin Eater's Prince, I loved exploring the ancient myths and lore enveloping Wales. There are many paranormal aspects and characters in The Sin Eater's Prince, but I've chosen only a few here to tell you about. That means, if you want to know more about the others, you'll have to read the book. Clever of me, don't you think? You can buy the book on Kindle US here:
http://amzn.to/HlboOL and Kindle UK here: http://amzn.to/HAlQAC

Tylwyth Teg, Faeries/The Fair Folk

Welsh faeries that are good, dance & kidnap children with long golden hair. They possess glamour and can change into goats, dogs, cats and foxes. They live underground in mountains and caves. The way to their wooded country the Land of Enchantment with meadows of bright flowers is underneath hollow banks that overhang the deepest parts of lakes, or the deepest pools in rivers. Mortals can not follow them further than the water.

The Tylwyth Teg are dark-haired, one to three feet tall, wear birch leaf coats, moss breeches & gorse flower hats. They are associated with poisonous foxgloves which are called petticoats. They use glow worms for torches. They ride white horses and the women have bright dresses of red, white, pink, blue and green on Mayday. The Fair Folk play harp and violin music; feast on wine in golden cups.

Their sacred well which humans cannot drink from is full of fish of every color and also golden fish. Their lake is populated by herons, geese, cormorants, eels, leeches, water-hens, water-lilies, rushes & sedges. On nights when the moon is full the Tylwyth Teg celebrate a merry night. At midnight they rise out of the ground in every combe and valley, join hands, form circles, and sing and dance until cock-crows. Then they vanish like the mist.
Knackers/Knockers, Mischievous elf-like creatures that haunt the mines of Wales

The Knocker, Knacker, (Welsh) or Tommyknocker (US) is a mythical creature in Welsh folklore. They are the equivalent of Irish leprechauns and English and Scottish brownies. About two feet tall and grizzled, but not misshapen, they live beneath the ground. Here they wear tiny versions of standard miner's garb and commit random mischief, such as stealing miner's unattended tools and food.

Their name comes from the knocking on the mine walls that happens just before cave-ins – actually the creaking of earth and timbers before giving way. To some of the miners, the knockers were malevolent spirits and the knocking was the sound of them hammering at walls and supports to cause the cave-in. To others, who saw them as essentially well-meaning practical jokers, the knocking was their way of warning the miners that a life-threatening collapse was imminent.

According to some Welsh folklore, the Knockers were the helpful spirits of people who had died in previous accidents in the many tin mines in the county, warning the miners of impending danger. To give thanks for the warnings, and to avoid future peril the miners cast the last bite of their tasty pasties into the mines for the Knockers.

Dyn Hysbys, Welsh Wizard

Dyn hysbys is a title rather than a name, the most common term in Wales for a wizard. The soul of the druid, too imperfect for Christian heaven and too good for hell, inhabits the body of the dyn hysbys. Among the powers of the dyn hysbys is the ability to know and reveal the unknown, especially events in the future pertaining to love and death. Such powers might also be applied to commonplaces, like finding money that has been lost or helping a Welshman to escape from an English gaol. He is said to possess the power of breaking spells by undoing the evil perpetrated by witches and others.

A dyn hysbys might also undertake to heal an animal or human by using charms and incantations. His powers are especially potent on the days when the world of the spirits is thought to come closer to that of humans, such as May Day, St John's Day, and the eve of winter. There are three kinds of dyn hysbys: clerics, men who had learned their craft from esoteric books, and those who had inherited the power from their families. Other Welsh terms for wizard are: conjurer, magician, and charmer. The names of many dyn hysbys survive, and some were renowned beyond their time and place.

Note: In The Sin Eater's Prince, Owen Rhys, the sin eater, is discovered to be a dyn hysbys, his powers passed down through the generations.

Gwrach y Rhibyn, Hag of the Mist

The Welsh “Hag of the Dribble” or “Hag of the Mist” may suddenly leap out of a water channel, but otherwise she’ll invisibly stalk her victims until they pass a crossroads or stream. Here she’ll become all too visible and audible, for in both instances her cries, like those of the Banshee are harrowing. If the person thus doomed to die (either the observer or someone they know) is a man the The Hag will holler “Fy ngwr! Fy ngwr!” (“My Husband! My Husband!”) but if a youth is to succumb, then she’ll cry “Fy mlentyn! Fy mlentyn bach!” (“My child! My little child!”)

She is a hideous sight to behold, with her crooked back, hooked nose, long filthy hair and manic eyes. She is pinched and scrawny, yet her superficial mass likely betrays her true strength and vigor. The most frightfully inhuman of all her features, however, are her long thin arms, for not only do they end in dreadful talon-like hands, but black scaly wings also hang from these extremities. These bat-like appendages are thought capable of flight. Her negligible clothing is black and ragged.

About The Sin Eater’s Prince

The sin eater has been shunned by the local villagers all his life, except by Andras Maddock, the local physician. In love with the one man he believes will never return that love, Owen is shocked when Andras saves him from death at the hands of a vampire.

Dagan, Dark Lord of the Underworld, vows to avenge his father’s death and obtain the Prince of Wales’s mystic sword from Andras. The claymore’s power holds an immunity the vampires have coveted for centuries.

Star-crossed love, sorcery, and bloodlust collide on a vengeful path where only one side will remain victorious.

  1. 1. My husband's birthday is the day after mine. Double celebrations!
  2. 2. There were so many divorces in my family that I swore I'd never marry. My thirtieth wedding anniversary will be in June!
  3. 3. I've been dancing since I was seven years old. Okay, so it gets a bit harder every year, but I'm not giving up yet!
  4. 4. My mother, among other occupations, was a professional belly dancer. I was semi-professional.
