The Hook

“Do you, Francesca, take this man Jacob, to be your lawful wedded husband? To have and to hold, to protect and to cherish, for richer and for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do you part?”

The priest intoned the familiar vows. Francesca peered through her veil at Jake. The moment had come. He looked incredibly handsome in his tuxedo. His eyes never left her face. They were full of love.

“I do,” she said, her voice ringing out clearly through St. Bridget’s sanctuary.

“And do you, Jacob, take this woman Francesca…”

She wanted to be fully present, to grab and hold on to every word. Somehow, though, her mind kept slipping away, to the wild night they’d all shared at The Fox’s Den, and to the night that awaited just the two of them, after today’s festivities were over. She knew that marriage was more than sex. On the other hand, a marriage without sexual compatibility was likely to fail.

Their time at the Den had got her thinking. Maybe the traditional notions about sexual fidelity were too restrictive. Well, obviously they were, for some people, like Larry and Foxy. For her and for Jake—well, she didn’t know yet. But she was willing to explore and to find out.

“I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride.”

Jake swept her into a full body kiss, his hands boldly tracing her curves while his tongue probed her mouth. She worried for a moment about scandalizing some of the guests. Not Aunt Giulia, though—she sat in the front pew, with Tiny beside her. They were holding hands. As astonishing as it seemed, there was an engagement ring on her aunt’s finger.

She stopped worrying and lost herself in her husband’s embrace. After all, it was her wedding.
