Charity Sunday: The Gift of Education ― #CharitySunday #Laos #Literacy #Poetry

Charity Sunday banner

Just about a year ago, my Charity Sunday focused on Big Brother Mouse, a home-grown non-profit working to provide educational opportunities for kids in Laos. They publish books in the Lao language as well as building and operating schools that focus not just on literacy, but also on independent thinking and self-reliance.

A few weeks ago I received a fascinating and far-ranging newsletter from the organization (which you can read here), which convinced me to dedicate this month’s Charity Sunday to their work. For every comment I receive on this post, I’ll donate two dollars.

Most of you probably know little or nothing about Laos, but it’s one of my favorite places, with amazing scenery, a deeply spiritual atmosphere and ancient history and culture. Most important, the Lao are, overall, among the warmest and most generous people I’ve met, even though the country has many problems and is painfully poor. I’ve visited there four or five times in the past two decades. I can see progress and development, but there’s still a sense of timelessness.

In my last Big Brother Mouse post, I included an excerpt from Vows, the only story I have written that is set in Laos. Not wanting to repeat myself, I considered augmenting this post with some description from my recently re-released first novel Raw Silk, set in Thailand (which is Laos’ more wealthy neighbor). This wouldn’t really give you much understanding of the Lao, though.

Then I remembered a poem I’d written, way back in 1997 when I first visited the country. We started in the capital Vientiane, then flew in what was probably a military surplus plane to the former capital Luang Prabang. The plane flew so low we barely cleared the tops of the mountains. The view was... well, read the poem to find out.

It’s a bit long but I think it does somewhat capture the experience.

Most of the streets in Luang Prabang are paved now (I was last there in 2019) but aside from that it hasn’t greatly changed. Lane Xang is the old name for this for this city, located in the highlands where two rivers join to form the Mekhong .

To Luang Prabang
November 3, 1997

Slight scent of mold;
the seats are tired,
cushions threadbare,
belts limp,
propeller there
through my porthole-window
(I’ll see it fail
if we lose an engine);
this fragile craft
from a forties movie
(I know, not really,
but can’t help looking
for Humphrey Bogart.)

The plane shudders,
propeller whirls
and disappears.
Something tears
at my throat as we try
to leave the earth:
not really fear,
more a sense of wonder
that I should be here.

Now, aloft,
the walls of this craft
vibrate and hum.
A steady drum
of condensation
drips in my lap,
but I hardly notice,
my nose pressed
to the misted glass,
my personal viewport
to times past.

A virgin world,
or so it seems;
brocade of every
shade of green:
emerald, jade,
chartreuse and teal,
draped and wrinkled
on limestone hills,
stitched by winding
liquid silver.
I almost feel
in my palm and fingers
the varied textures,
curves and hollows,
running my hand
in a mental caress
over the land.

A ribbon of road,
a dusty red,
tracing the contours,
hugging the ridges –
A hilltop, bald,
The greenish gold
of ripening rice
and a square hut
at the field’s corners.

Then higher, and now,
we fly among castles,
towers and peaks,
cloud as solid
as any earth
to the touch of my mind.

Valleys are veiled
then partly revealed.
Occasional sunbeam
pierces the mist
to wake the light
from a hidden stream.
Then I catch the sweep
of the mighty Mekhong,
the mother-river;
brown velvet
sequin-embroidered.
The forests flee.
A patchwork of paddy
carpets the valley.

So down we swoop
(my heart in my mouth)
and the layered roofs
and gilded spires
of the ancient seat
of Lane Xang
rise up to greet me
from unpaved streets.

Join us for Charity Saturday, 29 September 2024 #CharitySundaySignup #Altruism #Marketing

Autumn Leaves

Since 2017, I’ve been devoting the last Sunday in each month to a post which features some worthy cause. Often, other bloggers join me in this effort, turning the event into a blog hop. This month’s Charity Sunday blog hop will take place this coming Sunday, the 29th of September.

Charity Sunday is a meme designed to give authors and bloggers a chance to give back to the world, as well as to attract new readers.

How does it work? Each participant selects a favorite charity. Before
the date, you should prepare a blog post that: 1) talks about the charity and why you support it; 2) provides a link to the charity; 3) includes an excerpt from one of your books; 4) includes the code to show links to other participating blogs.

It’s fun if you can make the excerpt relate somehow to your chosen charity, but this isn’t required.

For every comment left on your post, you commit to giving some amount to the relevant charity. The specific charity and the amount to donate are up to you. You can set an upper limit to your donation if you want.

If you’d like to participate in the next Charity Sunday
on September 29th, sign up using the Linky List below. Please be sure that the link you enter will lead directly to your Charity Sunday post, not just to the home page of your blog.

You can get the 2024 Charity Sunday banner here:

First meeting with her Master – #MFRWHooks #EroticRomance #AnniversaryEdition

Raw Silk Teaser

Happy Wednesday! Welcome to another MFRW Book Hooks blog hop.

For today’s event, I’ve returned to the recently released 25th Anniversary edition of my very first novel, Raw Silk. I’m sharing the scene of the first meeting between my heroine Kate and Gregory Marshall, the man who will eventually become her Master. Hope you enjoy it!

Blurb

You were born to this. You may not understand, yet. You may not believe. But I will teach you.”

When software engineer Kate ONeill leaves her lover David to take a job in Thailand, she embarks on a sensual journey that will change her forever.

In the glittering City of Angels, Kate becomes sexually involved with two very different mena handsome and debauched member of the Thai aristocracy, and the charismatic, dominant proprietor of a sex bar. With Anand Rajchitraprasong, she discovers her own almost unlimited capacity for erotic pleasure. Meanwhile, Gregory Marshall shows her what she has hidden from herself: a deep desire to submit, to surrender herself body and soul to someone with the power and compassion to master her.

Each lascivious adventure binds her more closely to her lovers. Then David comes to Bangkok, and Kate realizes that she must choose one of the three men who all desire her.

The Hook

Miss Katherine, Mr. Edward asked me to see if you were available. He’s meeting with a client and would like you to join him.”

Of course,” said Kate, stifling a surge of frustration. She turned on her screensaver, and followed Malawee to the conference room.

She knocked then opened the door. Harrison sat at the far end of the polished table, a look of annoyance on his face. Sitting beside him was a man of unusual appearance—disquieting, she thought, then questioned the source of her reaction.

The man was European or American. He dressed casually, entirely in black—black shirt with an open collar and tight black jeans. He had long, straight hair, also black, pulled back in a ponytail with an ornate silver barrette. Kate thought she saw a flash of silver at his throat. His long fingers, clasped before him on the table, were similarly adorned with silver rings.

Strong planes shaped his tanned face—broad forehead, high cheekbones, resolute chin. His mouth, at the moment, framed a smile, but Kate thought that she caught a twist of irony in his expression.

As she entered, he turned his attention to her and she saw his eyes—a shocking, unexpected blue under heavy black brows. Intense, piercing, and completely without restraint, any sense of politeness or etiquette. He continued to hold her gaze for an awkward moment. Then Edward broke in, clearing his throat.

Ah, Katherine. Thank you for taking the time to join us. We need your technical expertise.”

Of course,” she said softly, seating herself several chairs away from the man in black. She was aware that he was still staring at her, and still smiling.

Katherine, this is Gregory Marshall, one of our clients.” The man in black rose and bowed, a polite gesture, yet somehow unconvincing. Kate saw that he was very tall, well over six feet. “Mr. Marshall, Katherine O’Neill, our new director of software development.”

My pleasure,” said the man, perfectly civilly. So why did she feel he was mocking her?

Mr. Marshall is the proprietor of one of the foremost establishments in Patpong.”

The red-light district?” she blurted out then nearly bit her tongue in embarrassment.

The entertainment district,” countered the man in black smoothly. “The Grotto is just a go-go bar, offering the same types of entertainment available in many places in the city. However, I am trying to make it more distinctive, more creative, more—interesting. That’s where DigiThai comes in.”

Yes,” her boss cut in, trying to recapture the conversational initiative. “Six months ago we designed and installed a custom multimedia system for Mr. Marshall’s bar, The Grotto. Video-walls and cameras, a simulated aquarium with computer-graphic inhabitants, acoustically-driven digital kaleidoscopes—very elaborate.”

And very successful,” said Gregory Marshall, with a broad smile that bared his straight, white teeth. “I’m very pleased with your work. It’s just that now I want to go further.”

Mr. Marshall has some novel ideas, but, as I have been telling him, they are barely feasible, technically. And certainly not for the price that we have been discussing.”

Always attracted by a technical challenge, Kate found herself interested. “What do you have in mind, Mr. Marshall?” she asked, in her most professional tone of voice.

Well, now…” The man’s voice was melodious, controlled, expressive. The voice of an actor. He riveted her with his gaze again. She stared back at him, proudly, rebelliously, not willing to be cowed. Eventually, he continued his speech, without looking away from her.

Three-dimensional imagery is what I am looking for. Something like the holograms one sees in science fiction movies. My girls are already fantastic, but I’d like to project more fantastic images still, images from people’s dreams and nightmares. They should be mysterious, evocative, erotic and disturbing. Furthermore, I would like to somehow link these images to the music, so that my customers will see reflections or echoes of the emotions aroused by the beat and the melody.”

Kate was silent for a moment. As she gathered her thoughts, Gregory Marshall watched her attentively. Finally, she spoke, choosing her words carefully.

Three-dimensional imagery on a two-dimensional screen has now become inexpensive and commonplace. Projected 3-D, though, still requires costly hardware, and custom software— the sort of thing available only to Disney or Spielberg.”

She paused and took a deep breath before continuing. “I do have some familiarity with this area, though. I did some related research when I was in grad school—”

Would you be willing to work on this for me?” interrupted Marshall, clearly excited. “I believe that I can make you understand exactly what I want.” He paused dramatically. “What do you say, Kate?”

Part of her bristled at the liberties he took, using her name so familiarly on such short acquaintance. Part of her warmed in response to that very familiarity, the tone of persuasive intimacy.

Beyond those reactions, she had to admit she was eager for the opportunity to pursue her ideas on the problem. She’d had to put her 3-D project aside after defending her thesis. Employers in the U.S. were seeking more practical innovations.

As for the chance to work for Gregory Marshall—well, that notion filled her with equal measures of excitement and dread. He was an arrogant bastard, that much was clear. The way he looked at her—without a shred of respect, as though she was some sort of peon, his to command! Yet at the same time, that challenging gaze made her pulse race and, yes, her pussy a bit damp. Despite his brashness and poor manners, she found him somehow intriguing.

Not that she’d let him know that, of course.

Freed Between the Lines - #Censorship #FreeSpeech #BannedBooksWeek

BBW Banner

This week, the American Library Association is “celebrating” Banned Books Week (https://www.ala.org/bbooks/banned). I use quotation marks, of course, because there’s nothing at all to celebrate. It’s appalling – not to mention embarrassing – that at this stage in civilization, people are trying to suppress books whose content, premises or authors they find objectionable.

In 2023 alone, the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom tracked 1,247 efforts to censor books and other resources in libraries—an increase of 65% from the year before. In total, 4,240 unique book titles were targeted. As you can see from this year’s “top 10” (again, a dubious label), many of these efforts are attempts to silence the voices of LGBTQIA+ individuals and people of color.

https://www.ala.org/bbooks/frequentlychallengedbooks/top10

Want to do something to oppose this trend? You’ll find a list of concrete actions you can take here:

https://www.ala.org/bbooks/bannedbooksweek/ideasandresources/activity

Censorship attempts have increased sharply over the past few years. According to the ALA's statistics, almost a third of the requests come from political pressure groups. Given the increasing polarization in the U.S., this does not surprise me, but it does not bode well for the future.

Censorship request graph

As a reader I find book bans offensive and dangerous. As a writer – they’re terrifying. We writers have stories to tell; if a book is banned, it’s as if we’ve been gagged. Since much of what I personally write is sexually explicit, I’m more at risk than many of my colleagues, or so it would appear. But if even if you write sweet romance, don’t get complacent. Any of us could become a target, if somebody doesn’t like our politics or our sexual identity or our themes.

silences stories

For example, one of my favorite books from my childhood, Madeleine L’Engle’s wonderful tale A Wrinkle in Time, has been subject to repeated ban attempts. This is so absurd that I could almost laugh, except that it’s too scary to contemplate.

Anyway, I hope that this week you’ll give some thought to how you’d feel if you wrote a book that wasn’t allowed on the bookshelves... or if a book you really wanted to read wasn’t available because of censorship.

And if you want to do something to fight back, why not buy one of the books on the top ten list?

Why Baltimore, and Why 2009? The Story Behind My Novel - #Mystery #Giveaway #AuthorCraft

The Scheme tour banner

By Amethyst Drake (Guest Blogger)

When I first started writing this novel, the setting was one of the most important decisions I had to make. Baltimore was an obvious choice. My husband and I have visited Baltimore many times, and it’s become our favorite cruise port. There's something special about the city. Its history, waterfront charm, and big-city, small-town feel blend perfectly. That balance is exactly what I wanted to capture in my book.

Baltimore’s neighborhoods are full of personality, and that sense of community is something I wanted to reflect in the story. Even though it’s a major city, there’s a closeness and warmth to the people and the places that feel like you could easily run into someone you know. That’s the vibe I wanted for my characters, too—a world where their lives intersect in ways both personal and professional.

Another factor in choosing Baltimore was its location on the coast. That coastal setting plays an important role in some of the espionage themes I plan to explore in future books. I wanted the freedom to weave in storylines involving international intrigue, secret ports, and coastal escapes. Baltimore offered the perfect backdrop for that.

As for the time period, I deliberately chose 2009 because I wanted a story that was grounded in a world before the pandemic. I felt it would give my characters more space to interact without the weight of everything we’ve all experienced in recent years. The late 2000s had a certain energy to them. It was an era where things were shifting, but not at the breakneck speed of today’s world, which felt right for the pacing of my story. I've enjoyed researching 2009 to add "dated" details, like references to MySpace and the BlackBerry.

The characters in this novel have actually been with me since I was in high school. Over the years, they’ve evolved and grown alongside me, and I always knew I wanted to share their stories with others. When I finally sat down to write The Scheme, I wanted to make sure their first adventure didn’t fall into the typical murder mystery category. I love a good murder mystery—I’ve always been a fan of classic detective stories, like Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple—but I didn’t want to lock myself into writing only murder mysteries.

Crime comes in all shapes and sizes, and I felt it was important to start with a story that focuses on a different type of mystery. Most crime in real life doesn’t involve murder, and I wanted to explore those other angles. The stakes are still high, the tension still sharp, but in a way that leaves room for all sorts of storytelling possibilities down the road. But for readers who prefer the typical murder mystery format, don't fret. My second book in the series, Framed, is all about homicide.

Blurb

Katherine Carson, a former intelligence operative turned private detective, has never been in it for the money. But when a desperate CEO offers double her usual fee to find his missing daughter, she can't refuse.

Set in Baltimore, 2009, what begins as a simple missing person inquiry transforms into a complex case of espionage, financial crime, and deep-seated grudges. For Katherine, this case strikes a personal chord, stirring up haunting memories from her own past. As unexpected connections emerge, she must confront her unresolved guilt.

Can Katherine and her team of private detectives solve the case before it's too late, or will the turmoil of her past consume her?

Excerpt

Katherine slowed down as she closed the final feet between them. Her target was cornered. Marty attempted a final desperate move, grabbing some scaffolding to haul himself up. The cold metal groaned in protest and shook under his weight. Katherine reacted instinctively as the scaffolding began to shudder. She leapt over the scattered debris, snatched Marty by his belt, and pulled with all her strength. She managed to rip Marty away mere moments before the neglected structure toppled over, sending a billow of dust and debris into the air.

They both covered their faces and waited for the dust to settle. Marty’s chest heaved as he gaped at the place where he had been standing moments before.

He coughed and stammered. “You saved me.”

Don’t get sentimental on me, Marty, I need information.” Her eyes blazed with intensity. “Why did you run?”

Are you kidding? The last thing I want is to tangle with you again. I couldn’t believe it when they told me you’d be on the other side of the case.” Marty tried to scramble to his feet.

What case? And who's they?” Katherine helped Marty up.

The prosecutors. The stolen pesticide?”

Marty, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I haven’t heard about stolen pesticide. I’m here to ask for your help,” Katherine gritted her teeth, “as one professional to another.”

Oh.” Marty looked relieved and straightened his coat. “In that case, sure. Anything you want.”

"Great. I'm looking for a young woman who has gone missing. Tell me why you were following Olivia Ames."

A man of many talents – #EroticRomance #BeaconHill #MFRWHooks

Incognito Banner

Having shared a bit from my very first novel last week during the MFRW Steam Hop, I thought today I’d give you a snippet of my second. Incognito, like Raw Silk, has been through a number of editions. Only recently, I brought out a new version in paperback, my first self-published print work (but not my last!)

Blurb

Shy and serious by day—insatiable by night.

During the day, Miranda Cahill works diligently on her doctoral thesis. At night, she has sex with strangers. Her secret life explodes when she realizes her masked partner at a kink club and the charismatic colleague courting her are in fact the same person – the one man who can teach her to accept her diverse desires, as well as to trust her heart.

Review Quotes

“…brings a fabulous level of intensity and sensuality to the reader.” ~ Dawnie, Fallen Angels Reviews (5 Angels)

Sarai skillfully combines the present day storyline with some tantalizing Victorian history. This book is well researched, erudite, well plotted and very sexy. Highly recommended.” ~ Emma K., Amazon (5 stars)

"Truly a buffet of pleasures, with something for everyone."~  Donna George Story, Erotica Readers and Writers Association.

The Hook

Eventually, he served dinner, fiery pork with basil and chilies, marinated squid salad, mustard greens in oyster sauce, mangos and sticky rice with coconut milk. Miranda was sure that she had never tasted anything better. Mark Anderson certainly did seem to be a man of many talents.

Afterward, they sat together on the couch with snifters of brandy. He was close, though they did not touch. She could sense the heat of his body. He took off his eyeglasses and looked at her, a frank question in his gaze.

He was beautiful, intelligent, kind, talented, but in spite of all that, Miranda felt suddenly wooden. A part of her wanted to reach out, brush that errant curl off his forehead, trace the outline of his full mouth with her fingertip. But she could not move, could not speak, strangled by nervousness and fear.

Mark saw. “You look tense,” he said softly. “Probably you’ve been working too hard. What if I give you a massage?”

Oh, the thought of his hands on her body! Miranda wanted it, and feared it.

Lie face down on the futon,” he suggested. “Don’t worry. It’s just a massage. I promise.”

Miranda could not help believing him. He flipped a lever that released the back of the couch, turning the frame into a flat platform the size of a double bed. She lay upon the mattress, fully dressed, her breath coming in little gasps.

She had chosen her clothing for the evening carefully, striving to look feminine but not seductive. She wore a short-sleeved turquoise jersey, long rayon print skirt that buttoned up the front, heeled sandals. Underneath, a simple cotton bra and panties. She had deliberately avoided Lucy’s closet. Mark looked at her, a little smile playing on his lips.

I can try giving you a massage through your clothes,” he said. “But it won’t be very effective. Why don’t you take off your top and skirt? Then I can see your muscles and better sense where the tension is hiding.”

His voice was warm, smooth, persuasive. “You can trust me, Miranda. You know that you can.”

Despite her nervousness, she sensed this was true. He wouldn’t take advantage of her. Without a word, she shed her outer clothes and lay down again in her underwear. She was no more exposed than she would have been at the beach, but here, alone in this man’s apartment, it felt different.

Review Tuesday: The Remaking of Corbin Wale by Roan Parrish -- #MMRomance #MagicalRealism #ReviewTuesday

The Remaking of Corbin Wale book cover

The Remaking of Corbin Wale by Roan Parrish

Monster Press, 2018

Corbin Wale is weird. He’s thoughtful, quiet and shy, oblivious to social conventions, so self-effacing that you tend to forget he’s there. His closest friends are the people he creates in his amazing drawings, who are as vivid and real to him as the sometimes disdainful and abusive individuals he encounters on the streets of Ann Arbor.

Corbin Wale is cursed. The twin aunts who raised him have explained that anyone loved by a member of their family will die within a year. Both of them defied this destiny and lost their lovers. Having witnessed their terrible pain, Corbin knows he must build a wall around his heart to protect himself as well as anyone who might someday want him.

Corbin Wale is beautiful. When he enters Alex Barrow’s artisanal bakery, sits down by the window and starts to draw, something turns over in Alex’s soul. The slender, graceful, unearthly young man enchants him, making him realize how shallow his previous loves have been. But Alex can tell that Corbin is skittish, that one wrong move will drive him away. Meanwhile, all that Alex wants is for him to stay forever.

I bought a copy of The Remaking of Corbin Wale after reading a glowing review on someone else’s blog. The novel sounded original and engaging enough that I was willing to give it a try, though I’d never heard of the author. Even if it didn’t live up to the hype, I thought I might enjoy it.

I got way more than I bargained for.

The Remaking of Corbin Wale astonished, delighted and aroused me. It is simultaneously sweet and steamy, a gorgeous love story laced with transcendental passion. The characterizations are delicate and thoughtful, eschewing all the stereotypes of MM romance. Though the genre dictates a happy ending, I found myself holding my breath as Alex and Corbin take tentative, dangerous steps toward connection.

The novel’s lyrical prose is sometimes closer to poetry, especially when the book takes Corbin’s point of view. (It alternates between the main characters, an effective strategy.) Corbin comes to life in the natural world, the forests that surround his out-of-the-way home. Ms. Parrish manages to capture the magic that underlies almost any experience, if you pay close enough attention.

When I went to Amazon to download the cover for posting with this review, I saw that the book has more than a thousand five star reviews. I don’t usually like to follow the crowd, but in this case I can’t disagree. The Making of Corbin Wale might be the most romantic as well as the most erotic MM tale I’ve ever read.

Don’t miss it.

Opening herself to love – #HistoricalRomance #GreatDepression #Giveaway

Where the Stars Cross tour banner

B
lurb

In the depths of the Great Depression, Ellie suffers another crash—that of her marriage. She’s left struggling to restore her shattered life, feeling as damaged as the stained-glass panels she refurbishes for Chicago’s historic structures. While visiting her aunt in Marietta, Ohio, a charming river town, Ellie encounters towboat captain Wyatt and feels a searing attraction to him. But thanks to past and subsequent wounds, her attempts at opening herself to love seem futile. Her hope for love and her determination to find the place she belongs are further complicated by her tendency to make impulsive decisions. In her journey, Ellie draws on an unrealized level of courage and learns she must identify her brightest passions in charting her course.

Excerpt

Climbing from her automobile, Ellie ambled around to the sidewalk, where she tipped herself onto her toes to stretch her legs and flung out her arms with a moan, promptly smacking a hand into what felt like a human. She pivoted.

Oh, my goodness, I’m so…” The “sorry” came a heartbeat or two later, followed by, “Are you all right?” even though there was no way this man wasn’t okay.

Tall and sturdy enough to survive much more than a little whack in the chest, his faded blue-and-white pinstriped shirt, tan leather vest, and well-worn trousers did nothing to detract from the toned lines of his body. A sampling of gray wove through the hair peeking out from beneath his newsboy cap. Slightly wavy, sandy blond hair, which on anyone else would need a good trimming but suited him fine. He hadn’t shaved in a day or two.

Lengthy drive, I take it?” His mouth curved into a half smile, crinkling the corners of soft, hazel eyes. “Nothing like a good punch to work out the kinks, huh, Slugger?”

Ellie drew in her lips. A laugh didn’t seem appropriate right now. “Really, I am very sorry,” Ellie said. “You are all right, aren’t you?”

I think I’ll be fine,” he said with a nod and a languid blink of those captivating eyes. “Ma’am,” he said with a tip of his cap before he and his comrades continued toward the river.

Ellie’s feet felt their way to the door of the five-and-dime. Wowee, did that bloke look better from the front or the back? Biting her bottom lip, she reached for the door handle.
