Review Tuesday moved to Thursday! Truth or Daire by Keta Diablo -- #ReviewTuesday #EroticRomance #Novella

Truth or Daire cover

Truth or Daire by Keta Diablo
Kindle Desktop Publishing, 2020

Cagney Kissler has been saving her V-card for that special someone. When her good-looking, fast-talking temporary flatmate Daire finally manages to seduce her, she wonders why she waited so long. Then she comes home from her job at Bloomingdale’s with her brand new, sexy lingerie, anticipating another night of delirious pleasure, and discovers he’s a lazy, lying cheat who’s just using her so he’ll have a place to crash. She kicks him out, but the damage to her self-esteem is not so easily repaired.

Fortunately, she has already planned a week-long winter escape to visit her best friend Lily in Fort Myers, Florida. The warm sun and the tropical environment are just what she needs to help her get over her heartache. When she meets Evan Truth – gorgeous, wealthy, considerate and insightful – she discovers how shallow her feelings for Daire really were. Evan’s kiss ignites her; his touch drives her crazy with desire. Meanwhile he’s such a decent, generous soul that she can’t help falling in love. But Cagney’s time in Florida is short and she knows Evan can never be more than a holiday fling. Flying back to her empty life in frigid, gray Chicago might be the hardest thing she’s ever done.

Truth or Daire is a brief but engaging erotic romance that does a fantastic job portraying the connection between two soul mates. The love scenes are gorgeous, while the deliciously described Florida setting reflects the warmth of Cagney’s and Evan’s connection. This 46 page novella provides a full narrative arc, with a conflict centered on the physical and psychological distance between the protagonists’ lives. Cagney’s wrenching parting from her beloved had me aching for her. However, this conflict is rapidly resolved in the last few pages and the happy ending assured. Indeed the obstacles dissolve, perhaps because they existed only in Cagney’s mind to start with.

Although it feels complete, this book was too short for my tastes. Ms. Diablo doesn’t have the word count to go into any depth. For instance, Evan is a veteran of the Afghan war, but we never really get to see how that (presumably horrific) experience affected him. We also know very little about the heroine, other than the fact that she’s a bit naïve and certainly more conservative than her rather wild Florida girlfriend. Truth or Daire offers a mere sketch of a relationship between two characters whom I’d like to know better.

Of course the answer to the implicit question in the book title was always Evan, but Daire reappears near the end, in a great scene that shows how far Cagney has come in a short time. I think Daire could have become more than just a brief comic relief. The same is true with Lily. It seems a shame to create such colorful characters but not take advantage of them.

In general, I have a personal preference for longer books. If, on the contrary, you’re looking for a quick romance hit, with lingering sweetness and luscious heat, Truth or Daire may be just the thing.

A hot read spiced with BDSM - #gayromance #dominance #submission @KetaDiablo

Blurb

The dreaded day had arrived. And this year, February 14th, had a dual meaning. Since his breakup a month ago with his boyfriend, Valentine Giovanni, Deke’s life seemed meaningless. What had he expected? The moment Val found out he’d cheated on him, the shit hit the fan... and Deke’s shoes hit the pavement.

He didn’t have time to explain why he cheated, and Val wouldn’t believe him. Val deserved better, a submissive that completely trusted him, who’d commit wholly to his rough sex and demands. So rather than talk over his fears and insecurities, Deke forced a breakup by exposing a liaison with another man.

It was a painful scene, an angry, gut-wrenching debacle that ended in a screaming match. Deke thought he’d feel relief when it was over, but every day was more dismal than the last, and all he felt was emptiness. He’d never loved anyone like he loved Val. He realized that now.

And tonight, he planned to grovel and beg for forgiveness, prove his love to the man.

* Scorchingly hot (handcuffs, bondage, spanking)

* Standalone novella

* No cliffhangers

* Happily-Ever-After

Excerpt

Val’s rage filled up the empty space between them. It radiated off him like hot vapors. Deke realized so many things at that moment, his stupid compulsiveness, his underestimation of what made Val tick. Even if Val decided to give him another chance, and that was a big if, Deke would have to regain his trust, prove he could take whatever his Dom dished out. Right now, both seemed insurmountable.

Deke closed the distance between them again. “I’m asking for another chance. I won’t ever hurt you again, and deep down, I know I make you happy.”

Val stared at him and pushed a long lock of ebony hair from his forehead. When his blue eyes bore into his, Deke almost dropped to his knees and begged.

This is something you realized just now?”

No, I realized it in the month we’ve been apart. I dissected every moment of our relationship, tore apart every fiber and reason for my indiscretion.”

Ha!” Another curt laugh from Val. “Is that how you dismiss cheating, call it an indiscretion. Jesus, Deke, I don’t know whether to laugh at the absurdity or cry over the stupidity.” He blew a long puff of exasperated air. “Why should I believe you wouldn’t cheat again?”

Stammering like a school boy, he said, “I’ll prove it to you, do anything you ask.”

Anything?”

Yes.” His heart thudded at the thought of what Val would demand from him. “I’ll do whatever it takes to have you back in my life again, like it was before.”

Your punishment will be severe.”

Deke swallowed, hard. “I expect it to be. I can take it; let me come home with you and prove it.”

Buoyed by DuBois #HistoricalRomance #BlackRomance #lera_rwa @mscottauthor1

Better to Marry Than to Burn cover

By Michal Scott (Guest Blogger)

Hi Lisabet! Thanks for this chance to share how my love for history helps me research for my romances.

Many people are familiar with the old James Brown song “Say It Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud” of the 1960’s. But not many know how old that sense of pride and accomplishment is. That’s why I love writing historicals that shed light on the varied lifestyles of African Americans, especially after the Civil War. Doing research to ground me in my characters’ backgrounds is like having a twenty- course meal, each course being one of my favorite desserts.

For Better To Marry Than To Burn I read The Philadelphia Negro, an amazing sociological study by W.E.B. DuBois to get a handle on the back story of my heroine, Queen Esther Payne. Published in 1899, The Philadelphia Negro documents the lives of ex-slave and freeborn African Americans in Philadelphia’s Seventh Ward. He chronicles everything from how they arrived there to the institutions and customs developed to regulate their lives. Although published almost 20 years after my story is set, Du Bois’ statistics and class-conscious conclusions helped me create the perfect heroine for my opposites-attract romance.

W.E.B. DuBois

Not every African American is “the dream and the hope of the slave” as Maya Angelou so eloquently wrote at the end of And Still I Rise. Whereas I am that dream and hope, I wanted to create Queen, a woman who not only wasn’t, but might not be welcoming of someone who is. I imagined her in what DuBois described as “the 277 families…who form the aristocracy of the Negro population in education, wealth and general social efficiency.”

 Unidentified woman with curly hair

She has grown up in one of the 52 of these families who “keep servants regularly, live in well-appointed homes, which give evidence of taste and even luxury.” Her father is among one of the “learned professions.” Although you don’t meet him, I made him one of the Methodist ministers who DuBois characterized as “generally a wide-awake business man, with something of the politician in his makeup.” Someone who would definitely be horrified at his daughter’s woman-loving woman preferences and would insist she become a housewife despite her bisexuality. Although DuBois lists numerous ways someone like Queen could have made a living if shunned by her family -- caterer, trained nurse, and musician just to name three -- being a minister’s daughter, she would have been pressured to fit into the traditional role of wife and mother. Accepting my hero’s offer of marriage and coming West was her only refuge.

In the conclusion of his study, DuBois urges “the better class of Negroes to recognize their duty toward the masses.” His concept of the Talented Tenth runs strong through my heroine’s consciousness. But she would need to be paired with someone not of her class and who could shake her “Talented Tenth” suppositions. Thus I created Caesar, an ex-slave who refused to be cowed by the violence of Reconstruction in the South and the prejudice and restrictions of the North. Caesar went West and built a life for himself there. However, when the town’s married women demand all single men get hitched through their bridal lottery or get out of town, Caesar once again refuses to be cowed and goes his own way by placing an ad of his own.

Blurb

Freed Man seeking woman to partner in marriage for at least two years in the black township of Douglass, Texas. Must be willing and able to help establish a legacy. Marital relations as necessary. Love neither required nor sought.

Caesar King's ad for a mail-order bride is an answer to Queen Esther Payne’s prayer. Her family expects her to adhere to society's traditional conventions of submissive wife and mother, but Queen refuses. She is not the weaker sex and will not allow herself to be used, abused or turned into a baby-making machine under the sanctity of matrimony. Grateful that love is neither required nor sought, she accepts the ex-slave's offer and heads West for marriage on her terms. Her education and breeding will see to that. However, once she meets Caesar, his unexpected allure and intriguing wit makes it hard to keep love at bay. How can she hope to remain her own woman when victory may be synonymous with surrender?

Excerpt

With thanks to God, he pushed past her flimsy drawers to the moist welcome of her center. Her vaginal walls gripped his fingers with surprising force. No amount of twisting or turning wrenched them free. God, to have that grip surrounding his shaft.

He pulled back and studied her face. Eyes still closed, a sly smile bowed her perfect lips. She enjoyed this battling as much as he.

“Was I too brutal for your enjoyment, Mrs. King?”

Her eyelids rose with the slow grace of sunrise. A gleam as sly as her
smile shone in her gaze. “You call that brutal, Mr. King?”

She unclenched her lower muscles, allowing his fingers momentary retreat. With great care, she grasped his hand then slid his fingers between her folds once more.

“Holy Christ, woman. What—?”

The gentle rubbing robbed him of his ability to think.

“Jesus, have mercy,” he wheezed.

She slid his fingers from her wet sex into his mouth. He moaned, lost in her delectable taste.

Without taking her gaze from his face, she raked her gloved hand down his chest, across his belly, to his groin. Anticipation tensed his muscles in the wake of her touch. He watched mesmerized as, with a practiced ease, she unbuttoned his fly, pushed past the fabric, sought, found and stroked his cock. Her woolen gloves imparted a delicious friction he couldn’t oppose, even if he’d wanted. Delight enlivened every muscle in his body, including his jaded heart.

Jesus. This couldn’t be more than arousal. Could it?

Her fingers squeezed and his body arched upward on the yes swelling his spirit with joy. He threw back his head, mouth open, ready to shout as he neared the point of release.

Then she let him go.

He doubled over, slain by the abandonment. His lungs constricted, bereft of air. Reason deserted him too.

She stood and smoothed down her skirts with the hand that had massaged his shaft more deftly than he ever had. Reseated, she grabbed the reins and snapped the leather against his horse’s rump.

“Get up there.”

The wagon jostled Caesar from side to side. Still unable to straighten up, he looked into eyes gleaming with triumph. Her lips curved in a regal smirk.

“Was I too brutal for your enjoyment, Mr. King?”

The Year of Firsts

By Cheyenne Blue (Guest Blogger)

First, in this post about firsts, a big thank you to Lisabet for having me on her blog—not for the first time.

2015 has been a year of firsts for me. First time to stand up on a surfboard—okay, it only lasted for about 3 seconds and ended in ignominy, but it’s something I never thought I’d manage. In my day job, for the first time I now have a boss who is younger than me (when did I get so old?) First time to have surgery (about as minor as it gets and still be surgery, but it involved blood and scalpels all the same).

Its been a year of firsts on the writing front too. Most notably, 2015 marks the year of my first longer piece of fiction in print. Ive been writing short erotic stories since 2000, had them published on various websites, and then eventually my first print publication in Best Womans Erotica. Yes, the very same series that is still running today, but this edition was 2002. Since then, Ive notched up around 100 short stories in print and pixel in various places.

I love writing short stories. I love the brevity, the slice-of-life way of telling something. Around me, erotica colleagues were meeting the changing market and writing novellas, novels, and then series, but I continued with shorts. Part of it was insecurity—what you know and all that. Part of it was lack of time—I held a demanding day job and I squashed in writing time in between everything else. A lot of it was the more instant gratification of writing short: of finishing a story, of submitting, of acceptance, of contributor copies in my hand, of reviews. But a friend convinced me to try something longer, and you’ve guessed it: I loved the process. I fell in love with writing, specifically erotic romance, all over again.

My first novella, Never-Tied Nora, came out this week from Ylva Publishing (another firsta new publisher for me). Not only my first novella, but also my first erotic romance. And too, the first of a series. The follow up, Not-So-Straight Sue will arrive in June 2016, and that ones a full length novel.

I hope youll check out Never-Tied Nora, which is available now direct from Ylva Publishing or pre-order from Amazon.

While were talking about writing firsts, of course I also edited an anthology of firsts in 2015. First: Sensual Lesbian Stories of New Beginnings is available now from Ladylit or from Amazon. Theres 15 firsts between those covers!

Blurb

Nora Kelly loves her carefree London life where there’s always a new woman to seduce. Her big Irish family tease her about her footloose ways, but she knows she’s in no danger of losing her heart.

Her family has only one rule when it comes to dating: Nora can date any woman she wants—as long as she’s not a Flannery. The Kellys and the Flannerys have been feuding ever since both families arrived in London from Ireland sixty years ago, and time has not lessened the hatred.

But never-tied Nora has just met the woman of her dreams, and suddenly commitment isn’t a dirty word. Trouble is, Geraldine is a Flannery.

Can Nora convince Ger that, despite their families, they are meant to be together?

Excerpt

The Korean place was modern—tiled, cold, and echoey, but I didn’t care. We were shown to a table at the back where huge potted plants muted the worst of the noise. It was far enough from the kitchen that the service was beyond woeful, but I didn’t care. I sat opposite Ger once again and watched her expressions and gestures—the quick smile that lit her face like lightning over the ocean, and her small, white fingers with their short, blunt nails as they pointed to a menu selection.

We ate sizzling beef brought by blank-faced waiters, and if I’d been with Sue I’d have been whining about the price of everything and how that should at least get us a smile. But with Ger, complaining didn’t cross my mind. Indeed, I welcomed the awful service as it meant more uninterrupted time to look, to flirt, to touch her hand, to dream, to imagine, and to fantasize about an outcome between us. We finished the bottle of wine but didn’t order another. Instead, we drank water, and played the getting to know you guessing game.

Youre a professional womens hockey player,I said.Or a coal miner. Final answer.

Her sigh was theatrical. “You’ve caught me. Want an autograph? Actually, my sister plays hockey. She says I should learn—I might meet someone. She reckons she’s the only straight woman on the team.”

I picked up her hand again. “Tell her you’ve already met someone.”

Her gaze clung to mine. “I might do that. Or I might let her set me up with Big Betsie, the goalie. I love a woman with muscles.”

I pushed up the sleeve of my jacket to show my forearm. “I have muscles,” I said in pretend affront. “All the typing I do, how could I not?”

Youre a writer, she guessed. You ghostwrite autobiographies of the rich and famous. Or youre a PhD student, four years into the worlds longest thesis.

I wish. Think dull. Think of the jobs that send you to sleep.

Hypnotherapist? Is that how youre so successful with women?

You dont know that Im successful. I could be Never-Laid Nora, the unloved.

Her expression sobered, and she shuffled her chair around the tiny table so that she was next to me. She was so close I could smell the spices from the meal on her breath. She moved her chair enough that it was angled toward mine, her legs capturing one of mine between them.

Nora, look at me.The laughter fled her voice. If you are the unloved, if you are the unlaid, then—”

Then what?I was trapped. Caught in the intensity of her eyes and the steel of her thighs.

Its my lucky day, as you must be desperate.Warmth radiated from her fleeting smile.

She leaned forward, enough that I could see the dark flecks in her sea-green eyes. “I won’t lie to you, Nora. I’ve gone home with women I’ve just met. Met them in a club, or a pub, or at my sister’s hockey game. And I’ve spent a night with them, and at the time it was wonderful. Sex, out of this world. But afterwards? Not so much.” She dragged a deep breath, sat back, and took a gulp from her water glass. “I’m tempted. I’m tempted to lean in and kiss you. Learn your taste, the sigh of your breath. See if your hair is as soft as it looks. I want to know you. Learn what your skin feels like. And in the morning we’d have coffee, and kiss, and swap phone numbers, and then I’d leave, or you’d leave, depending on where we were, and I’d wait for your call. Or maybe I wouldn’t. Maybe I’d have written you off as just another one of those women, and I’d go into work, and maybe I’d cry on my boss’s shoulder over you. Maybe not.”

Her quiet words held me spellbound, and even the tardy waiter arriving to clear away the dirty dishes didn’t interrupt.

What do you want from me, Nora?

My voice was a croak worthy of any frog princess. “Everything. I want everything you’ll give me.”

Never-Tied Nora is available now from Ylva Publishing or pre-order from Amazon.
