Excerpt

Spill the beans woman before I lose my ever-loving mind.” I loved making Kenya wait, she was the most impatient female I knew. Lizzie was turning beat red as she did her best not to laugh. Whether from the expressions on Kenya’s face, or the bright pink lipstick she’d decided to try that seemed to glow, I had no idea. Maybe it was both. Kenya sat back in her seat and crossed her arms at her very ample chest, which drew more attention to the blindingly bright yellow dress she had on. The way she was dressed was a sure sign the two of them must have had a fight about something. It was the only time Kenya pulled out the tackiest looking clothes she could find. And with her exotic midnight sky complexion the neon bright material looked like it was actually glowing in the dark, and it was broad daylight.

Lizzie, did you really have to piss her off today?” I eyeballed her as I asked the question and did my best to hold in the laugh that bubbled up in my throat. Lizzie looked conservative in comparison to her mate. She wore a black leather catsuit which only had one sleeve, the other didn’t have so much as a spaghetti strap which showed off her slightly muscular, milky cream arm. With her blonde hair pulled to the top of her head in a sleek ponytail and cut bangs that hung right below her eyebrows she looked like she had just walked off the Charlies Angels film set. The two of them already resembled night and day as it was, even without Kenya’s added antics. “I mean, come on. How am I supposed to give y’all all the details you’ve been waiting to hear while trying to avoid looking at a Rainbow Brite reject for too long? Is she doing an experiment that neither of us know about? Can supes go blind, and if so what kind?”

Lizzie couldn’t stop the laugh that came from her mouth, which was unfortunate considering she had just taken a huge sip of her extra dead red bubbly. Good thing she had on black. One of the waiters came rushing over with more than a few extra napkins as Lizzie began to explain, “Your friend has a case of baby fever and is doing her level best to pass it on to me.” Was her sultry reply.

So?” That really didn’t explain much, not given their situation, “Lizzie, I thought the two of you worked that out a long time ago. That you were going to start your family right around now. It’s been, what, twenty-five years already, right?” That earned me a scoff and an eyeroll from Kenya.

Lizzie went on to say to me, “Having the baby isn’t what the problem is. The problem is that she wants me to be the one to carry it. That was not part of the deal, and she knows it.”

But you handle pain so much better than I do.” Kenya replied as she did her level best to pout with her arms crossed against her chest. Which only made Lizzie and I laugh that much harder.

Once I was finally able to curtail my laughter I asked Kenya, “So you mean to tell me you over there huffin and puffin over something you have no business being mad about?” when she made no attempt to respond I continued, “Why would you even want Lizzie to carry the baby? She’s part of the Guard you whacko.” I laughed a bit more when she rolled her eyes at that, “Goddess, I really missed this.”

You’re the one that decided to take a ten-year honeymoon.” Lizzie said as she scooted back her chair and stood, “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I see my dinner. Don’t spill any details until I get back.”

After she bent down to give Kenya a kiss on her still pouting, bright lips, Lizzie sashayed off to the dancefloor where willing donors were dancing to some new techno beat. We were at Club Vamptasy. That had been my first visit to the club since it had been built while I was still abroad on my honeymoon. Apparently, the royal families created a new bar, or club, in each district as peace offerings after the wars. Well, they called them the wars, but if you asked me it was more like a huge family feud between the vampires, witches, and Rasputins, with a few others caught in the crossfire. Guess it was just one of those ‘all in how you look at it’ things. The clubs weren’t segregated or anything stupid such as that, just each catered to specific factions needs. But everyone was allowed to come and have a good time.

At Club Vamptasy, the snack bar was literally on the dance floor. Human donors of every variety swayed to the beat with their necks and wrists exposed. If a vampire wanted to take a more intimate vein they had to do so in one of the private rooms in the back. I hadn’t been to a private room or the snack bar yet, didn’t have a need. I had already fully fed before I left home. To each their own and all that, but I’d much rather feed at home than in public. Guess a part of me would just always be a tad bit shy. Though my mate did tend to bring out my wild side; which was part of the reason I left him at home. The other part was that he was out catching up with his own friends.

I don’t think I could have stopped smiling had I wanted to as I my eyes locked onto Kenya as she watched her wife sink her fangs into one of the women on the dance floor, “My Goddess, does the euphoric feeling ever go away?” I absently asked her.

No.” Kenya laughed slightly before she continued, her eyes still glued to the female she loved, “Do not get me wrong, we fight, which you already know. But the love? That just grows so much stronger. I have heard horror stories of wrong mates being matched by fate, but that is not the case for us.”

I shuttered at the unexpected chill those words made shoot up my spine, “Yeah, I really hope those are just rumors.”

Completely ignoring me, Kenya puckered up her lips for a kiss as Lizzie sashayed her way back to where we sat, “Reina, can you tell your friend over there to put those bright ass lips down? I am not getting that neon mess on me.” Lizzie said as she plopped down in her chair. The three of us couldn’t help but all laugh.

It felt good to be back home, though the more I recapped my honeymoon, the more I missed my mate. Since Lizzie was part of the royal guard, the waiter kept us topped off with only the top shelf mixtures. The alchemist had done a fabulous job of creating all types of alcoholic beverages mixed with blood that we could consume without getting sick, as long as we didn’t go overboard with it. They held no nutritional value whatsoever, but they tasted good and being able to get tipsy was more than a little bit of fun. But, they did make us have to use the restroom, something we normally only did maybe twice a day. Me more so than others as evidenced by the squeaky chorus of, “Again?”, I received from Lizzie and Kenya when I excused myself from the table.

The place wasn’t jam packed, but it did have a decent enough sized crowd that I had to say excuse me several times before I finally made my way to the restroom. There was less of a crowd there, sense most were still leery of the new drinks. Altogether the daunting task took probably less than two minutes.

I was headed back to where me and the girls had been seated when a rather large hand grabbed my upper arm and spun me around, “Josephine?”, he said once we were face to face. His voice was deep and gravelly, and sent chills down my spine, and not in a good way.

Uh, no. You’ve got the wrong girl.” I said to him with a nervous laugh as I tried but failed to shrug him off, which should have been easy. He wasn’t a vampire, or a shifter, so he wasn’t stronger than me. I closed my eyes for a second to gain my composure and in that small amount of time I could sense that he was a warlock (and no, a warlock isn’t just a male witch, but more like a war mage. And can be either a male or female), but something about him and his magic were just off. If felt crazed, erratic. “Dude, seriously, I’m not whoever you think I am.”

Josie, baby, it’s me.” Desperation laced his words and pulled at my heartstrings even though he truly gave me the heebie-jeebies. The silent tear that shed down from his eye swirled with magic and strangely had sparks shooting up the birthmark on my hipbone.

Hey, Rena. We got a problem here?” Bruno, one of the barrel-chested, brutal looking members of the royal guard came to the rescue just as the stranger was about to pull me closer to him. Bruno grabbed the male’s hand away from me while he said to me, “You just go ‘head wit da girls and finish y’alls night whiles I have a word or two with our new friend here.”

Right before I walked off I said to Bruno, “Don’t be too hard on him, he just thought I was someone else.” I almost changed my words when I looked down and saw a magic burn mark on my arm where he had been holding onto me.

Are you okay?” Kenya asked once I made my way back to the table.

Yeah, no, I don’t know. That whole little encounter just felt…wrong. Maybe we should just go.” As we parted ways I couldn’t help the eerie feeling that I’d seen that mystery male before, and would again.

About the Author

T. A. resides in Detroit, Michigan with her five children, and the rest of her dysfunctional family, where she was born and raised. She started her writing career in the midst of a very hard time in her life and is now a best-selling author. Her debut and award-winning novel, Witch Wars, and the world of Underlayes, was born from a mind that desperately needed an escape, so she created one.

The novel was inspired by her love of all things paranormal and how she wanted it seen. “We live in a diverse world, shouldn’t all of the characters in books, even paranormal also be diverse,” she says. “I saw so few paranormal books with a diverse cast until I read L. A. Banks. You know, with more than one or two diverse characters thrown in for good measure. Mine have it all, too.”

Review Tuesday: Chasing the Dead - #ReviewTuesday #WesternRomance #Ghosts

Chasing the Dead cover

Chasing the Dead: A Western Romance by Keta Diablo
Keta Diablo, 2019

In New Mexico, in 1884, spirits disturb the world of the living.

Madrid Arrende does not have her late mother’s power to exorcise ghosts, but the Mexican peasants who live on or around her wealthy father’s hacienda believe that she has inherited Celesta’s supernatural abilities. In fact, her mother’s fame has even reached the hostile Apaches, who kidnap Maddie in the hope that she can banish the vicious, vengeful spirit terrorizing their village. Proud and violent even in life, Uday murdered the father of Sacheen, the woman he wanted, when the father refused to force Sacheen to wed him. Sacheen’s brother killed Uday in a fair fight, but the spurned brave refused to move on to the spirit world. Instead, the vicious wraith threatens the entire tribe in his lust to possess Sacheen, even from beyond the grave.

Deacon and Gideon Bannister live with a different sort of ghost. Seven years ago, an Apache war party attacked their ranch, killed their parents and abducted their sisters Callie and Tess. The brothers can’t rest until they’ve tracked down the missing young women. In fact, Deacon broke off his engagement with Maddie because he felt that the search for his sisters had to take first priority.

Nevertheless, when Madrid’s father enlists Deacon’s aid in recovering his daughter, Deacon quickly agrees. He has realized his mistake in rejecting the beautiful, independent young woman. Though she is now engaged to someone else, Deacon is determined not only to save her from the Indians, but to win back her love – if the tribe, or the demonic Uday, do not kill them first.

Chasing the Dead is a short but satisfying Western romance with a generous dash of the paranormal. In fact, I’m not usually a fan of the Western genre, which tends toward stereotypes and anachronisms. However, Keta Diablo obviously did extensive research for this book, especially with regard to Apache language and customs. I’m no expert, but the book feels genuine.

The plot is surprisingly complex and the cast of characters more extensive than I’d expect in a book of only 110 pages (in epub format). Even the minor characters, such as Nasario the Mexican shaman and the Bannister’s youngest brother Sefton, have some depth. The main protagonists are both distinctive and appealing. In particular, I loved the portrayal of Sacheen. She’s fierce and loyal, with a world view that contrasts with that of the whites and the Mexicans.

Probably my favorite aspect of Chasing the Dead was the chilling and vivid depictions of the ghost and the underworld. The Apache version of Hell looks quite different from our Western version. I loved the intensity and the originality.

The book does merit the label of romance. It’s no surprise when Madrid breaks off her engagement to cleave to Deacon, or when Gideon and Sacheen fall in love. However, the romantic and erotic aspects of the novel were overshadowed, for me, by the fascinating cultural details and the supernatural elements.

I have one complaint about the book. I felt that the chapters were too short. I understand the author’s intentions. She is juggling four major characters, and needs to alternate among them in order to get her story told. However, because she spends only three or four pages in each perspective, I ended up feeling a bit rushed – almost out of breath.

Still, Ms. Diablo does an excellent job tying all the threads together – and laying the foundations for a sequel, without leaving the reader on the edge of cliff. Overall, I definitely enjoyed Chasing the Dead.

Embracing the Shadows - #Paranormal #TheDarkSide #Power

Dark magician

What makes paranormal romance so popular? I've been pondering this question for a while. Readers, it seems, are happy to consume as many tales about vampires, shape shifters, ghosts and psychics as we authors can produce. You'd think that they'd get bored, but that doesn't seem to happen. Why not?

I've got a theory. We're all tempted by the dark side.

The realms of paranormal romance are vast, but most books offer characters with dual natures, torn between normal humanity and―otherness. The “other” aspect conveys special powers ― unnatural strength, heightened sensation, hidden knowledge―but always at a price. The characters suffer because of their power. Blood-drinkers and half-beasts are ravaged by conscience because they maim or kill. Immortals bear the weight of lonely, isolated centuries and the pain of watching mortal companions wither and die. My prescient hero Kyle in NecessaryMadness can see the future but the fury of his visions drives him insane. Jorge in Serpent's Kiss is the incarnation of an ancient god but each time he makes love to his human mate he comes close to killing her.

In the paranormal genre, power and darkness go hand in hand. Yet somehow, we are attracted to the darkness. We brush the suffering aside; we want to feel the power. A vampires isn't sexy when he's fighting against his blood craving. Only when he sweeps his victim into his arms and buries his fangs in her flesh does he make us breathless and moist.

How many books have you read where the human hero or heroine willingly submits to “the change”, the transformation that will make them “other” as well? How many characters, in contrast, manage to resist the pull of the dark side? Not many. Normal mortal life seems absurd, bland and empty after you've tasted power. This is especially true because sex on the dark side in erotic romance is always more intense, more extreme, transcending the limits that bind ordinary humans.

Even a villain with supernatural powers tempts us. A well-written antagonist should invite enough identification that the reader can understand what moves him to do evil. The best bad guys are ambiguous, able to justify their deeds so well that they draw our sympathy. They dazzle us with their logic and their beauty, until we can't see their wickedness. Lucifer still looks like an angel as he bargains for your soul. Stefan Aries, my villain in Necessary Madness, is handsome and brilliant enough to make Kyle want him, despite his being a murderer.

We're drawn to the dark side, I think, because it's an escape. Sometimes the real world leaves us feeling so powerless―we can't help wanting the ability to take control, to bend the world to our will the way our paranormal characters do. Who wouldn't want to leave the dirty dishes and the unpaid bills behind and slip away into the night, to slink through the shadowy streets scenting for blood or to howl, unfettered, at the moon?

The dark side calls to us in paranormal romance. Every time we open a new book, we flirt with the possibility of ecstatic surrender.

Here’s a bit from one of my darker paranormals, Fire in the Blood. In this MMF erotic romance, neither Maddy nor Troy can resist the vampire hero – despite his own warnings.

His entry was swift and silent. She didn’t even know he was behind her until she noticed his fire-cast shadow on the bed. “You may wear this.” He handed her a brilliant garment of multi-coloured silk. “It belonged to my mistress.” The dressing gown was soft as a cloud, so delicate that Maddy feared it would tear at her slightest touching.

God, it’s exquisite.” The jewel-toned robe shimmered with a twining pattern of blossoms and peacocks. “But I can’t wear this. I’ll destroy it. It looks like an antique.”

Put it on.” Power rang in his voice. There was no way she could disobey. She slipped the gown over her shoulders and belted it around her waist. The silk caressed her breasts and belly like secret hands. Her pussy dampened again. “Sit down now, and I will bind your ankle.”

She seated herself on the bed. The giant perched on a wooden stool and drew her foot into his lap. Maddy struggled to hold still. Every time he brushed his fingers over her flesh, electric thrills sizzled up to strike between her legs. She wanted him to push the slithery silk up her thighs, to spread them so wide that it hurt, then dive down to feast on her juicy sex. Surely he must smell her. He must hear her heart, so loud in her own ears that she could no longer hear the crackling fire. However, he appeared to be completely occupied with his nursing duties. He wrapped her foot and ankle in layer after layer of taut muslin, a reasonable substitute for an ace bandage, then secured his efforts with several safety pins.

She couldn’t stand it anymore. She laid her palm on the kinky nap covering his head. He raised his eyes. In their depths, she saw wisdom and pain. “I’m Madeleine,” she said. “What’s your name?”

Etienne.” He settled back on the stool. “Etienne de Rémorcy.”

I want to thank you, Etienne. For all your help.” Casually, with one hand, she loosened the sash holding the robe closed. She leaned forward, so the silk gapped open and revealed her gleaming white breasts.

I could hardly do otherwise. My mistress taught me how to be a gentleman. You obviously needed my assistance.” His rich voice sounded strained.

Oh, I did.” Maddy shifted on the bed. The dressing gown slipped off one shoulder. “I still do.” The peacocks slithered away, exposing her pale thigh and her wound, crusted with dried blood.

Etienne’s eyes glittered. His blunt hands shot out and grabbed her wrists. “Do not play with me, girl.” Lust gushed through Maddy’s body. Etienne’s nostrils twitched. He tightened his grip until she cried out. “Do not tempt me.”

You’re hurting me,” she whimpered. “Please…” Dimly, she understood that she was not begging to be released.

Believe me, I will hurt you far more if we continue.” Etienne forced her down on the bed, her captured arms above her, and straddled her with his massive thighs. “Although I was taught to be a gentleman, in truth, I am a savage beast.” The fragile silk tore away from her nakedness.

Don’t you want me?” Maddy’s eyes swam with tears.

He brought his mouth close to her ear. “You could not possibly understand how much.” His breath was the icy exhalation of a glacier.

She shivered under his weight. His coolness only stoked the fire in her pussy. “Then take me.”

He freed her wrists and sat back on his heels, searching her face. She cupped her ripe breasts and offered them to him. Please, she prayed silently, let him see my need. She opened herself to him, letting those luminous eyes probe her deepest desires.

He licked his full lips, and his white teeth gleamed in the fire light. He reached for his belt. “Let it be as you will, then,” he growled. “I am no longer responsible.”

Sizzling Sunday: Rajasthani Moon -- #bdsm #paranormal #steampunk #menage

Sizzlng Sunday banner

Writing about Rajasthani Moon yesterday, I realized I hadn’t done a Sizzling Sunday post from that novel in a long time. So I thought I’d remedy that!

Here’s a spicy bit that’s the prelude to one of the more extreme BDSM scenes in the book.

Blurb

Neither kink nor curse can stop a woman with a mission.

Cecily Harrowsmith, secret agent extraordinaire, is a woman on a mission. When the remote Indian kingdom of Rajasthan refused to remit its taxes to the Empire, Her Majesty imposed an embargo. Deprived of the energy-rich mineral viridium, essential for modern technology and development, Rajasthan was expected to quickly give in and resume its payments. Yet after three years, the rebellious principality still has not knuckled under. Cecily undertakes the difficult journey to that rugged, arid land in order to determine just how it has managed to survive, and if possible to convince the country to return to the Empire’s embrace. Instead, she’s taken captive by a brigand, who turns out to be the ruler’s half-brother Pratan, and delivered into the hands of the sexy but sadistic Rajah Amir, who expertly mingles torture and delight in his interrogation of the voluptuous interloper.

Cursed before birth by Amir’s jealous mother, Pratan changes to a ravening wolf whenever the moon is full. Cecily uncovers the counter-spell that can reverse the effects of the former queen’s hex and tries to trade that information for her freedom. Drawn to the fierce wolf-man and sympathising with his suffering, she volunteers to serve as the sacrifice required by the ritual—offering her body to the beast. In return, the Rajah reveal Rajasthan’s amazing secret source of energy. In the face of almost impossible odds, Cecily has accomplished the task entrusted to her by the Empire. But can she really bear to leave the virile half-brothers and their colourful land behind and return to the constraints of her life in England?

Excerpt

Cecily swished her hand through the rose-scented water in the fingerbowl, then scrambled to a standing position. “If you’ll excuse me, Your Highness, I would like to retire. I am quite exhausted by the day’s events.”

Oh no, Miss Harrowsmith. Your presence is most definitely necessary for the evening’s entertainment. Pratan, if you’d do the honours…”

The prince sprang up, seizing her by the wrist before she could flinch away. “Come along, Cecily.” His strong fingers were as tenacious as one of his voice-activated shackles. “I haven’t had the pleasure of reddening your delightful bum in more than twenty-four hours…”

No! Not again!” Her instincts taking over, Cecily spun on the ball of her right foot, aiming a kick at his groin with her left. Pratan appeared to anticipate her move. Without releasing his hold on her wrist, he snatched her flying ankle out of the air, jerked it towards the ceiling, and toppled her back onto the cushions.

Don’t misbehave. You’ll only make things harder on yourself.” Fuming, Cecily couldn’t help notice that her discomfiture had finally brought a smile to the man’s previously sombre features. She also realised, with some annoyance, that his brilliant parry had engendered a distinct dampness between her thighs.

I won’t go willingly,” she insisted, trying to salvage her pride. “And don’t forget I’m a diplomatic envoy. It’s a serious breach of international protocol for you to use force.”

International protocol be damned.” Without further argument, Pratan grabbed her around the waist, heaved her substantial bulk over his shoulder and headed for the interior of the palace, following the Rajah and Sarita.

His arm clamped across the back of her legs, holding her fast. Her head hung down, almost level with his waist, so that her long hair dangled in her face. The awkward position pressed her pubis against his shoulder and, with every step he took, his muscles rippled under the sensitive pad of flesh, teasing and delicious. Arse in the air, she beat her fists against his powerful back in a futile effort to stop his progress.

Let me go, you brute!”

Her captor responded by sliding a hand under her skirt and pinching her butt cheek. Unerringly, he found one of her welts from the previous night.

Ow! Stop that!”

He ignored her protests. Instead he probed her rear crevice, seeking her still-stretched pucker. “You don’t have to pretend with me, lady.” He squirmed a finger inside and for an instant she thought she might embarrass herself completely by coming in response to that rude intrusion. Another finger settled into her soaked cleft. “You’re wetter than a monsoon rain.” He flicked her clit, wringing a groan from her throat, before disappearing. “You love it rough.”

She ceased her struggling, realising she should conserve her energy for more crucial efforts. Pratan hauled her along lavishly decorated corridors that bustled with palace functionaries, who fell back and bowed as the ruler and his brother paraded past with their burdens of female flesh. Then he carried her down two flights of stairs, handling her ten and a half stone with impressive ease. They paused, and she heard the metallic click of lock tumblers falling into place. Pratan stepped through an arched doorway and pulled the wood and iron door shut behind them. With her hair veiling her eyes, Cecily couldn’t see their surroundings very well, but the dimly lit hallway along which they now progressed appeared to have been hewn from solid rock.

Where are we?”

My brother’s very private playground. It’s quite a privilege to be issued an invitation. You should feel honoured.”

Honoured? Balderdash.”

Review Tuesday: Soulless by Gail Carriger - #ReviewTuesday #steampunk #paranormal

Soulless cover

Soulless by Gail Carriger
Orbit, 2014

When respectable spinster Alexia Tarabotti retires to the library for tea and treacle tart at poorly-provisioned society ball, the last thing she expects to encounter is a vampire, especially a vampire who’s not aware of her unique nature. Miss Tarabotti is a preternatural, a human without a soul whose touch neutralizes the power of vampires, werewolves, ghosts and other excessively soulful creatures. Well-educated supernaturals would normally avoid her, but the library vampire, peculiarly clueless, attacks her instead. She inadvertently kills the creature in self-defense, leading to raft of complications.

Foremost among these is the bossy, overbearing and distractingly gorgeous werewolf Lord Maccon, head of the supernatural investigation bureau. With her half-Italian heritage, dark complexion, advanced age, and lack of soul, Alexia can’t expect to attract the Scottish Alpha, but she’d deeply appreciate being taken seriously. Instead he rejects all her offers to assist in probing the strange appearances and disappearances of supernaturals that are plaguing London. Of course, Miss Tarabotti is not the sort to be put off by his refusal, so she begins some discreet inquiries on her own. They lead her to a secret cabal of scientists with a dastardly plot to destroy the supernaturals upon whom the greatness of the British Empire depends – and into grave danger not only to her own person, but to those she loves.

Soulless is the rollicking first volume of Gail Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate series. Set in an alternative Victorian period in which vampires and werewolves have been integrated into British society, the book seamlessly melds steam punk, fantasy, humor and romance. Miss Tarabotti is a larger than life character with a prodigious intellect, a sharp tongue and a healthy appetite for both food and the pleasures of the flesh. Needless to say, she’s a fine match for the gruff werewolf Lord Macon, and the distinctly carnal nature of their developing relationship adds spice to the plot.

I don’t want to spoil your experience by telling you more. Quite simply, I loved Soulless. I’ve pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I’m going to break down and buy the next volume soon.

Listen to my witches! #FF #lesfic #AudioBook #NewRelease

My lesbian fantasy novella The Witches of Gloucester is now available in audio, from WordWooze Publishing!

Narrator Lorraine Walters does an amazing job bringing my sunny, sensual tale of lust, love and magic to brilliant life. As always, the quality of the WordWooze edition is stellar.

Check out the audio sample at Amazon or Audible.com. You can get the book for free if you sign up for an Audible subscription.

I’ve included an excerpt below, but you really need to listen to the book to appreciate it.

Blurb

The historic port of Gloucester, Massachusetts has a special charm, due in part to its resident witches. For decades, raven-maned Marguerite and red-headed Beryl have lived among its hard-working inhabitants, making magic and mischief. To reach their full potential, they need a third witch to complete their circle. Platinum-haired newcomer Emmeline might be the woman theyve been waiting for.

Excerpt

Will she come, do you think?” Marguerite gestured toward the 1930’s brass Commodore clock on the mantel, which read ten minutes past four. “She looked so nervous yesterday – as if she thought we’d eat her alive.”

Well, actually, when you put it that way...” Beryl allowed herself a lecherous chuckle.

Her companion gave her an exasperated grin. “This is not a joke. You know as well as I what is at stake.”

Don’t worry, Mar. She’ll be here, though she may have to wrestle a few doubts into submission first. She feels the pull, just as we do, even if she doesn’t understand it.”

Well, I do hope she arrives soon.” Marguerite surveyed the elegant table she’d set. She picked up a Blue Willow porcelain teacup and wiped away an imaginary smudge. “The icing on the petit fours is melting.”

As if in answer, chimes tinkled at the front of the house and a hint of fresh air slipped in the open door, bringing the ubiquitous tang of salt. From his corner cage, Marguerite’s mynah, Jonah, exactly mimicked the sound of the doorbell. Beryl jumped to her feet. “I’ll go show her to the parlor.”

No, no – let Gloria do that. We don’t want to spook her with excess enthusiasm. Settle down and compose yourself. Remember, you’re a member of the Ladies’ Welcome Brigade. Refined. Polite. Proper.”

Proper?” Beryl grinned and thumbed her peaked nipples, obvious as always through the navy blue crepe of her blouse. Her eyes fluttered shut as she relished the sensation. “Refined? Me?”

Marguerite licked her full lips. She swept her palms over the plum velvet caftan that hid her thighs.Try to pretend, darling. Just this once.

Thirty-seven-year-old painter Cassandra Mitchell is fourth-generation to live in the majestic Battersea Bluffs, a brooding Queen Anne home originally built by her great-grandparents, Percy and Celeste Mitchell, and still standing despite tragedies that have swept the generations. Local lore has it that there was a curse placed on the family and the house is haunted, though opinions are divided on whether it's by malicious or benevolent spirits. Cassie believes the latter―but now she stands to lose her beloved home to mounting debt and the machinations of her dream-weaving ex-husband.

Salvation seems to arrive when a nomadic young couple wanders onto the property with the promise of companionship and much-needed help―until they vanish without a trace, leaving behind no clue to their identities. Cassie is devastated, but determined to discover what's happened to the young couple...even as digging into their disappearance starts to uncover family secrets of her own. Despite warnings from her childhood friend, now the local Chief of Police―as well as an FBI agent who pushes the boundaries of professionalism―Cassie can't help following the trail of clues (and eerie signals from the old house itself) to unravel the mystery. But can she do so before her family's dark curse destroys everything in its path?

The fire bell was ringing, and someone yelled in through the tavern door, “There’s a fire up on the north end! Battersea Bluffs. We need all the hands we can get!”

No, it can’t be,” Percy whispered. The Bluffs was his home. He leapt from the barstool and ran for the street, bumping into a stranger as he passed through the tavern door. The man’s eyes were ominously familiar to him, but with more pressing concerns, there was no time to bring to memory why. He had to get home to Celeste.

It sickened him to see the flames as his Ford pickup rounded the top of Lavender Hill. How hard he and Celeste had worked to build this house, a grand Victorian with a widow’s walk and a proud front porch facing out to sea. Fire trucks were already there, and men he’d known these many years were working hard to contain the blaze.

As he ran toward the house, it came to him who the stranger in the tavern had been, and later one of the firefighters would recount that Percy had screamed: “Damn that lighterman’s curse. Damn you to hell, Robert Toomey!” Nobody was quick enough to keep Percy Mitchell from entering the inferno. Moments later he emerged, his clothing and hair afire, carrying a charred human form. Any man would have been delirious from the pain, but as the firefighters looked on in shocked disbelief, Percy walked with a purposeful bearing and a swift gait toward the bluffs. A few men chased after their friend, but before anyone could stop him, Percy reached the ledge and cried out, “I am not finished!”

And then, with his already dead wife in his arms, he hurled them both into Cape Cod Bay.
