Your stay in purgatory has only just begun... #HighlanderRomance #ScottishWarsofIndependence #HistoricalFiction

The Devil Take You cover

By H K Carlton (Guest Blogger)

Thank you so much for hosting, today. I’m excited to once again share this story with readers. The Devil Take You, is a bit different for a historical romance. Though it’s still heaped with historical significance of the time—set in 1307 during the Scottish Wars of Independence and the story also focuses on, of course, a romance, but the ‘hero’ is the villain.

I wanted to create an anti-hero, a severely flawed, cruel, and malevolent character with no hope of redemption.

Meet Gard Marschand—known in the Highlands as the legendary devil—an evildoer of epic proportions. Marauder, murderer, thief, a man hell bent on revenge. He is prepared to do anything, no matter how heinous to accomplish his goals. This man is nobody's hero. But even in his wickedness, he still holds to his own moral code, skewed as it may seem to decent folk.

So, how then, do we create a romance when the protagonist is such a deplorable character?

Place a feisty Scottish lass—with a few secrets of her own—in the devil's path, of course!

This story was challenging right from the beginning, and I knew that I had to create the right woman with a combination of strength, resilience and an overabundance of, if not understanding, at the very least acceptance, for a man who has no remorse for any of his wrongdoings and with no inclination or desire to change. Braelynn Galbraith began as the woman in the wrong place at the wrong time, but she eventually evolved into a character that could stand toe-to-toe with the devil and hold her own.

I hope you’ll enjoy, The Devil Take You—

Blurb

Braelynn Galbraith wants peace for her beloved Scotland, marriage to her childhood sweetheart, and a house full of children. In that order. But evil incarnate, in the form of Gard Marschand, turns her life inside out and destroys all hope of a decent marriage.

Known in the Highlands as the legendary devil, Gard Marschand raids his way across Scotland and England amassing power and property in his malevolent wake. He will stop at nothing in his pursuit to regain what is lost— even conceal his true identity and associate with his enemies. His determination is all-consuming until he and his men lay siege to Ross-shire holding and one feisty Scottish lass obliterates his single-minded purpose.

Can Gard abandon his deep-seated need for revenge for a love that just might save his rotten soul? Or will he succumb to the demons that hound him and surrender to the devil within?

I believe your stay in purgatory has only just begun…

What readers are saying

What a fabulous, well crafted story! I could hardly put it down. I love Brae as much as I loved Holly in the Always Cambridge series. They’re not the same character at all, but Brae is just as spunky, brave, creative, smart and grounded.

This book was wonderful in so many ways. Feisty heroine, brooding hero, historical facts woven into the plot, descriptions of sweeping landscapes, drama and intrigue...well-deserved praise!

I love a good historical romance, especially those set in Scotland. With a spirited young miss in Brae and a rogue in Gard, HK Carlton has created two of my favorite characters in The Devil Take You. With a story that ranks with those of Jude Deveraux and Nora Roberts, HK's tale will sweep you up in a tide of passion and intrigue that will keep you turning pages.

Excerpt

Brae slept until the noise of the camp rising woke her.

She dressed, then packed her gear and waited for Marschand’s tent to come down, and the day’s travel to begin.

She was unsure with whom she would ride this day, Llach or Marschand. Or if she would have to walk. She could not march too far without eating. She was starving.

Half and hour later, Brae waited outside, where Marschand’s quarters had stood only moments before.

“Did you eat?” Without a sound, Marschand appeared at her side.

She jumped. “Nay.”

“Why not? Do you think if you do not consume, that in death, you will escape me?”

“Nay, it had no’ occurred ta me, but it is somethin’ ta keep in mind. Thank ya for the suggestion.”

His lips tightened.

“As usual I am no’ allowed ta leave your quarters, but no one brings me food,” she explained. “And you are off doin’ wha’e’er it is tha’ ya do. I’d think ya might be nicer ta the one ye need ta rely on.”

His dark eyebrows knitted. “You grant yourself too much importance.”

Unable to help herself, even after Hudson’s warning, she said, “Ye ne’er ken when I could reword your correspondence, or jus’ plain no’ read the whole o’ it. Puttin’ ya in a bad position.” She challenged, returning his scowl. “Ya migh’ want ta think aboot tha’ the next time ye be dolin’ oot your punishments. I can be vindictive, too. ’Twould seem ya have a whole lot more ta lose than I do.” She tried to walk away, but he snaked his hand out and grabbed her braid, hauling her backward.

His black eyes glittered as he yanked on her hair so hard, she had no choice but to face him. “Why do you not learn?” he sneered.

“And why dinna ye learn? I think I jus’ made meself perfectly clear.” Slowly and deliberately, she reached downward in hope that neither Marschand nor his men would detect the measured movement.

“And if you are of no use to me,” Marschand countered, “then I have no use for you. Do not bite the hand that feeds you, Mistress Galbraith, is that not what you once said?”

“No one feeds me, Marschand, be tha’ no’ wha’ precipitated this particular argument?”

“And perhaps the withholding of food may continue, Miss...” He stopped speaking when she pressed the blade from his own dirk against his skin. A trickle of blood ran down his neck. His mouth quirked, and his eyes lit from within.

He is the most confounding man! If she did not know better, she’d think he was proud of her. “Ya see, Marschand, I am learnin’. Soon ya willna be able ta push me aroond.”

“You need to be willing to use it, Braelynn.” With lightening speed, he took hold of her wrist and applied enough pressure that she was forced to drop the blade. “Or I will continue to push you around all I wish.” He ground his hips against her, leaving her no doubt as to what kind of pushing he meant. “But it was a splendid attempt.” He winked. The carefree action surprised her—so at odds with his severe nature. “However, I did enjoy the bloodletting.”

Something REALLY naughty to upset Santa! @AuthorHKCarlton #twins #spouseswap #taboo

Xmas Spouse Swap cover

Thank you so much for hosting today, Lisabet. I'd like to wish you and your readers a Happy Holiday filled with all the Blessings of the Season.

Today, I've brought along, twins Siri and Iris, who decide to give their husbands the ultimate gift — a festive spouse swap.

Here's the blurb:

Meet the twins who take share and share alike to a whole new level…

Separated
at the age of sixteen by selfish battling parents going through a bitter divorce, twin sisters Iris and Siri Beaulieu vow to never be apart on Christmas Eve, which is also their birthday.

Now
grown and married and perhaps a bit bored with their husbands, the twins decide to give each other the ultimate birthday present by switching identities.

And
one tipsy Christmas Eve leads to a twin swap the husbands will never forget.

Although it’s been done, many times, many ways… Merry Christmas to you!

If you decide to give this story a read and you enjoy the twins and their hunky husbands—and I hope you do—you might be interested to know, I'm working on a sequel.

When I started writing this story, I intended for it to be, a simple smutty switcheroo with a Christmassy setting. Some fun escapism for holiday-weary readers. But as often happens, I found there was more to this story than I'd originally planned and there's nothing simple about swapping spouses. Especially when there is already a sister connection to begin with. You'll have to tune into the sequel to find out how that plays out and the aftermath that follows the twins and their hubbies.

I also learned there is a fine line—at least in this genre—as to writing sex scenes when there are siblings involved and there should be zero arousal or attraction between the two. It's a no-no. That's a whole other kettle. When I was working on this story, it never occurred to me how it might be construed, until my lovely editor pointed it out. Always learning.

Here is the cut, unedited scene, from the original version of Xmas Spouse Swap... which was just too taboo to keep in the story. Even after it was pointed out to me, I still thought the way I wrote the scene, it might still be passable. You be the judge.

“Hey where are you two lovely ladies going?” Kyle called after them.

“We’re going to put our jammies on,” Iris replied, over her shoulder.

“I like the sound of that.” Kyle grinned.

“I’ll just bet you do,” Iris shot back.

“What’s not to like. Gorgeous twins, in lingerie. I mean, come on.”

“Who said anything about lingerie?”

“Well, a guy can dream, can’t he? Christmas miracles and all that. You’re the one who says anything can happen at Christmas.”

This time, Iris rolled her eyes.

“Crank up the tunes, Ky,” Siri said. “We won’t be long.”

“You see, why can’t Brett be more like Kyle?” Siri said, as soon as she closed the bedroom door.

“Aren’t you being a bit hard on him? You know sometimes, I’d like Kyle to be serious about something. Anything, actually.”

“Maybe if we combined them, we’d have a perfect man.” Siri rifled through her suitcase and quickly changed into a deep burgundy colored chemise that barely covered her ass or her breasts.

“Wow, am I gonna look plain next to you,” Iris said.

“Why, what did you bring?” Siri peered over.

“Shorts and tank top with candy canes and gingerbread men on them.”

Siri rolled her eyes and tossed a green nightie, in the same style, to her.

“I don’t know, Sear, I’m not sure I feel comfortable parading around in front of your husband…”

“Just say thank you and put it on, Eye.” Siri said through clenched teeth.

As Iris changed, she said, “Hmm, seems to me, Brett’s not the only one wound a little tight.”

“You’ve no idea,” Siri responded. “Are you ready?”

“Hand me your brush.” Iris combed her hair while Siri merely scrunched her long blonde tresses with her fingers.

“Here, don’t forget your hat.” Siri handed Iris the red one.

“Mine’s the green one, remember?” Iris corrected, with her hand out.

“Wait.” All of a sudden, Siri stilled.

“I’m having trouble keeping up with your mood swings here, Sear.”

“What if we…” Siri raked her lip with her teeth.

“Oh no. I know that look. What are you plotting and how is it going to get me in trouble.”

“No-no. It’ll be fun. I promise!”

“I’ve heard that before. Right before I got either grounded, earned detention, or got sent to the principal’s office. Oh and once landed us in the back of a cop car.”

“Oh stop. I meant well.” Siri grinned and Iris was relieved to see a genuine smile on her sister’s face. She’d been starting to get worried. Whatever she had planned, she’d probably go along with, just to keep her smiling.

“So?” Iris prompted.

Siri planted the green hat on her head. “Let’s switch.”

Iris’ excitement, dimmed. “I… I don’t know, Sear.”

“Oh come on, it’ll be fun!”

In her opinion, it was asking for trouble with a capital T.

“There’s no way, they’d fall for it, Siri, they know us too well.”

Her sister’s shoulders sagged and for a moment Iris was about to acquiesce.

“You’re probably right. Here take your silly green hat.” She headed for the door with the red one.

“Siri.”

Siri turned and held out her hand. The excitement in her eyes was gone. “Let’s dance and rub all up on our husbands. That was your suggestion, remember.” She opened the door and dragged Iris with her.

“Check it out!” Kyle cheered when he got an eye full of the two of them in their similar low-cut, shorty nighties, topped off with the Santa hats.

“How about a little holiday hoe-down, fellas?” Siri invited, seductively, doing a full body roll.

“Merry freakin’ Christmas!” Kyle bellowed and cranked the music.

Siri seemed to perk up at his exuberance.

“How about we give them a twin show, they won’t ever forget.” Siri pressed up against Iris’ back and she tempted them, with the most sensually fluid arm gestures, using her wrists and her fingers to beckon them closer. “We'll get them so hot and horny they won't know what to do with themselves."

Kyle all but floated over to them. “What have we here?” He placed one hand on Iris’ hip and his other on Siri’s and he began to move with them rhythmically.

Both women sidled up to Kyle. Greedily, he wrapped his arms around each of them.

“Fuck you Brett, my Christmas wish came true!” he called. “I got both Beaulieu sisters.”

For a few minutes, Brett sat in a chair across the room, with his snifter of Brandy and simply watched the girls dance provocatively with Kyle.

Iris couldn’t keep her gaze from straying to Brett. Yes, he was keeping close tabs on his wife and Kyle but Iris could also feel the heat and intensity of his gaze on her as well. It made her want to move more sensually, just for him.

“Your husband likes to watch,” Kyle said to Siri.

“Indeed he does,” Siri replied in a sultry voice.

For some reason the thought fascinated Iris.

Iris pried her attention away from Brett to look at Kyle. His eyes were heavy with arousal. He was definitely getting off on dancing with the two of them. Siri was feeding off him too.

Wickedly, Iris wanted Brett to take pleasure in them too.

“Come, Brett, join us.” Iris tried to imitate the same dramatic gestures with her arms as Siri had when calling Kyle over.

She was pleased when Brett set his glass down and made his way over.

To her delight, he didn’t immediately go to his wife, instead he placed his hands at Iris’ waist and moved with her.

Gradually, the guys moved in, practically sandwiching the twins between them. Iris and Siri ended up, back to back.

Yet soon, Kyle, who was still holding Siri, reached for Iris. Skimming with his hand, he followed the curve of her neck and shoulder and part way down her arm. He then detoured around front where he cupped her breast and fondled it. She was both mortified and turned on at the same time. Especially when Brett lowered his gaze and watched Kyle’s hand at work. Brett ever so slowly trailed his hand up her side and rested his palm at the side of her other breast. He caressed her side boob with his thumb. The soft gesture sent the most delicious tendrils of sensation straight to her pussy.

Iris had to bite her lip to keep from moaning. Her nipples hardened to aching points as Brett and Kyle double-teamed her. Yet she wanted more, much more. What would it be like to be touched by both men at the same time? She tried to resist the urge to fidget hoping to direct Brett’s hand where she craved it most.

Not to be outdone, Siri turned her back to Kyle, yet kept him close. Iris wondered if her sister could feel her husband’s erection nudging her ass. For there was no doubt that all four of them were equally aroused at their spontaneous play.

“Move your hip just a smidge, Eye,” Siri whispered.

The flutter of her warm breath on Iris’ neck, made her shudder, in the best possible way.

Shamelessly, Siri reached around Iris and palmed her husband’s cock through his trousers.

“Ohhh, aren’t you nice and hard!” Siri crooned.

Iris fisted her hands. Her fingers itched to touch him too, and find out for herself just how hard he truly was.

Iris peered up at Brett, wondering at his reaction.

But to her surprise, he wasn’t even looking at Siri, his focus was squarely on her.

Siri chuckled. Iris was sure the low devious sound went through them all. It certainly did her.

“Seems Kyle isn’t the only man who has a twin fetish.” Siri all but purred. She was enjoying this and not only in the physical sense. She was pushing Iris right out of her comfort zone and if she wasn’t mistaken, she was doing the same to Brett.

Just when she thought there was nothing left Siri could do to shock her, her sister proved her wrong. Siri lowered her head and kissed a slow path up Iris’ neck.

Iris was more than aware that she’d done it purely to excite the men, but in her highly aroused state, it did crazy things to her, too.

“Oh, god,” she murmured. Her eyes fluttered as she tried to maintain eye contact with Brett. That connection in and of itself was stimulating her on a whole other level. Yet what she really wanted to do, was let her head fall back on Siri’s shoulder and let them all go at it.

A nerve in Brett’s jaw ticked rapidly.

All of a sudden there seemed to be a cacophony of heavy breathing assaulting her from all sides, along with an orgy of hands.

Oh god, yes!

Review Tuesday: Ladies Only anthololgy (#lesfic #ff #eroticromance)

Ladies Only cover

Ladies Only Anthology

By Cari Z, Helena Maeve, R.A. Padmos, HK Carlton, and Lucy Felthouse
Pride Publishing, 2016

Ladies Only is a new lesbian erotic romance anthology from Pride Publishing. I requested a review copy when I saw a post about it on HK Carlton’s blog. The authors featured in the book include some of my favorites (including HK), plus I was delighted to see Pride putting out some F/F fiction.

The book includes five tales in the 10-15K word range. (Overall the PDF version is 205 pages.) Each one focuses on the relationship between two women.

The heroine in “Worth a Shot” by Cari Z has a lucrative business detailing racing cars. Samara dreads the idea of getting a housemate to occupy the other side of her duplex, but when Katie shows up, the young woman seems a perfect fit. Katie and Sam have lots in common—including a strong mutual attraction. As they grow closer, Sam starts imagining they might build a life together. However, Katie’s past is full of secrets. An innocent error on Sam’s part exposes them both to danger and tears them apart, apparently forever.

In “The Woman Next Door” by Helena Maeve, an artist confronts the neighbor whose noisy renovation is preventing her from working, only to discover that the occupant of the condo next door is an old enemy. Eight years before, Yvonne Barros destroyed Ziva’s business and brought Ziva close to bankruptcy. There’s no way Ziva wants her as a neighbor. However, Yvonne has suffered her own reversals. The elegant executive seems to have changed, and to want Ziva as a friend—and more. Ziva’s equally drawn to her nemesis. But can the woman who ruined her once be trusted not to do it again?

R.A. Padmos’ “The Tiny Blue House” is a luscious lesbian fable about love, loss, and wonderful food. Young chef Molly Knowles roams the country in her mobile home, working in kitchens, picking up new recipes, and enjoying the women she meets along the way. When she experiences the cooking of Chiara Loss, it’s love at first taste.

HK Carlton’s “In the Flesh” offers a gritty tale of exotic dancers, mob bosses and undercover cops. ATF officer Kate infiltrates a skin club run by the Traviano crime family, posing as a dancer. She falls hard for Carly, a stunningly talented stripper who’s linked to the mob boss’s son. In a world where the slightest mistake can be deadly, Kate struggles to do her job without giving up her incendiary relationship with Carly.

In “Window Dressing”, Lucy Felthouse creates a feisty young woman who is building a career as a shop-fitter. Jessie is sent from Leeds to London to create an elaborate display for an Oxford Street shop. It’s the most important job she’s ever undertaken—and it’s being supervised by a woman with a legendary reputation for being critical and nasty. At first, Edith lives up to the stories about her dragon-like personality, but as the long night wears on, Jessie gets to see another side of the dragon lady. She finds that Edith is a woman with strong desires—and those desires include Jessie herself.

Overall, Ladies Only is a very enjoyable book. The quality of the writing is uniformly high, while the styles of the authors are sufficiently diverse that I didn’t get bored. I particularly liked the slightly fairy-tale quality of R.A. Padmos’ tale. She creates a happily-ever-after world where you find yourself exactly where you’re supposed to be: in seaside town where a long-time lesbian couple has the ideal spot for parking your trailer, and where your soul mate works in the kitchen.

HK Carlton’s story features wonderfully intense sex scenes. “In the Flesh” captures the sensual quality of dancing and reflects my personal experience that dancing is often the first step toward making love. Actually, I found the plot in this story rather implausible. However, the chemistry between Kate and Carly more or less distracted me from that weakness.

The characters in the other three stories pulled me in, especially Ziva. I loved the portrayal of her artistic talent, the fact that she never knows what she’ll paint until she’s standing in front of the canvas. To be honest, however, I found the erotic aspects of these three stories a bit perfunctory and unconvincing. Compared to other lesbian erotic romance I’ve read, these stories seemed a bit thin.

One reason for this, I think, is the rather awkward length of the stories in the collection. They’re neither true short stories nor novellas, but something in between. Too long to have the stunning immediacy of a vignette, they’re still too brief to really explore the development of an emotional and sexual relationship. I’ve encountered the frustrations of this length myself. More than once reviewers have commented on what seemed like abrupt endings in my 15K stories. The fact is, I more or less ran out of word count.

In any case, I’m delighted to see Pride Publishing releasing more lesbian fiction. Ladies Only is a solid collection which I think may be particularly appropriate for readers of other romance subgenres who are curious about F/F relationships. There’s nothing scary or foreign here—just pairs of women who fall in love, like anyone else.

Chance Meeting + Smouldering Hot Repairman = Author Fodder

By H K Carlton (Guest Blogger)

So, I met a guy. A younger man. The classic tall, dark and handsome. Piercing blue eyes. A slight cleft dead centre of his chin.

It was just a chance encounter while I was running errands. I was in a hurry to get things done. It was hot that day. An incredibly humid and sticky, day here in Ontario. I nipped into the bank, hoping it would be a quick stop, in and out. But the line was long. I just wanted to get my tasks finished up and get back to the air-conditioned car and get home, out of the intolerable heat. I was impatient with the slow moving line-up; probably tapping my foot in annoyance.

As I waited, my gaze wandered over the other irritated customers and the bored-looking tellers behind the counter. But as I scanned, my attention strayed to a set of broad shoulders, encased in a standard issue blue work-shirt. I assumed he was a repairman of some sort, even before I saw him tossing his tools into a toolbox. I enjoyed the play of his shirt, as it pulled tight across his back. I admired the snug navy work pants as they hugged his nicely toned backside. He shut the box lid, grasped the handle and turned. I quickly read the patch on his right chest pocket; unfortunately it wasn’t his name, but the company logo. He looked straight in my direction, as if he’d known that I’d been watching him. The corner of his generous mouth turned up and he gave me a slight nod. Trying to be cool, I returned the gesture then swiftly averted my stare, trying to maintain an air of indifference. He moved out from behind the counter and I restrained myself from watching him leave.

I continued on, with the business at hand and after my turn at the wicket, I made my way towards the exit. As I reached for the door handle the gorgeous repairman appeared, his hands full, his toolbox in one, an aluminium ladder in the other.

Yes, I could have just pressed the massive automatic door swing button, for his convenience. And, it would have held both sets of doors for him, but I didn’t, I opened them manually, instead.

He grinned. “Why, thank you.” His voice was deep, just as I’d hoped.

“You’re welcome.” I followed him through to the next door and held that one, too.

He thanked me again and held my gaze.

“It’s another hot one, huh?” he said, looking off towards the horizon for a second then he zeroed back in on me.

Hot. Yes, it was freaking hot and I wasn’t thinking about the climate. “Mmm, it’s rather nasty, isn’t it,” I responded, admiring the distinct colour of his eyes, and the light scruff of dark hair on his cheeks and chin.

He stepped off the curb and began to walk in the direction of his service van. “Thanks for your help,” he said, almost over his shoulder.

“My pleasure,” I replied, heading towards my own vehicle.

“You have a good day now,” he smirked, as if he knew exactly what I was thinking.

“You, too, Techo-Co,” I replied, using the company name that I’d read off his shirt.

He threw his head back and laughed out loud. It made me smile.

I hurried to my car and surreptitiously, watched him load the back of the service truck, as I fiddled with my keys, the ignition, the radio, the air conditioning. Anything, I could think of that would keep me there just a little bit longer.

Temptation in a blue work-shirt, that’s what he was.

Once he hopped into his van and I could no longer see him, I drove out of the parking lot and continued on with my to-do list. But all day, his smouldering good looks, were right there, in my mind’s eye. The cocky little grin, the knowing gaze.
So, that night, I started a very sexy story, about a character named Techo-Co, with clear blue eyes and a nice young hard body.

So, please, let me introduce you to my Techo-Co, Billy.

My lovely repairman may never know that he was the stimulus for Hard and Fast or the prequel Gave Good Face, but it did earn him a nice dedication and a few hard core fantasies in my dirty little mind, to boot. Thanks for the inspiration, handsome!

Blurb

Josslynn Rossdale has dedicated the last ten years of her life making her sister’s dreams come true, and happily so. But now that Pasha is on the cusp of taking the fashion world by storm, Joss realizes she needs some time apart from Pash to find her own direction. Temporarily breaking away from the fast-paced modelling industry, Joss returns to their hometown and decides that opening her own agency is the way to go.

An overly hot and humid summer season has kept repairman Billy Maas more than busy. But when he attends a routine service call, he doesn’t expect the most beautiful woman in the universe to answer the door, let alone allow him to service more than just her air-con unit.

But Joss isn’t looking for a simple fling. After seeing how happy her sister, Pasha, is with her husband, Lot, she wants some of that. Billy is fun and exciting, but their lives and interests are very different. So when Joss begins to have real feelings for the adorable Billy, she sees no alternative but to distance herself from the younger party boy—leaving the bewildered and lovelorn repairman with a crisis he can’t fix.

Here’s a little snip from Hard and Fast (it might sound familiar)

Josslynn Rossdale stood in line at the bank. Another scorching day with the humidity so high that one perspired just standing still. Most of the other customers appeared to be melting, each with that fine layer of sheen and flushed complexion. In a lightweight cotton blouse, beige short shorts and sandals, Joss attempted to beat the heat.
“Next,” the first vacant teller drawled.
Joss stepped forward.
“Hey, Joss, how are you?” She’d been in the savings and loan so often lately that the employees knew her by name.
“Good, Tracey, and you?”
“It’s so much better in here now that they’ve got the air conditioning back up and running.”
Joss noted the serviceman in the standard blue work shirt, placing his tools back into his box. “Mmm, should suggest him for my building. AC’s on the fritz at my apartment too. I put in a call to the building manager but I’m still waiting.”
The repairman was tall, with short dark hair and nice broad shoulders. Snug, navy workpants showcased his well-toned glutes. As if he knew that he was being scrutinised he turned and zeroed right in on Joss. He had the most piercing blue eyes. Too cute, and too young. He couldn’t be more than twenty-five, she guessed. Somewhat used to a certain amount of healthy male attention herself, she smiled, totally aware that he was checking her out too. He grinned in return and the action brought out a charming dimple in his left cheek. He sported a fine layer of stubble as if he hadn’t had time to shave that morning. Joss liked it. It gave him a rugged appearance. Yes, he was a very attractive guy.
“What can I help you with, Joss?” Tracey snagged Joss’ attention back. “He’s really freakin’ hawt, right?” Tracey said under her breath, just as the young workman set down his toolbox on the countertop next to her workspace.
“Actually, I was hoping to catch Tom,” Joss answered. “I’m not sure if he’s in, but he said he’d leave some paperwork for me at the customer service wicket. But your man Tech-Co here is using it to store his tools at the moment.” Joss read the company name off the guy’s shirt.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt. I just need a signature and then I can get out of the way.” He said this to Tracey but kept his gaze trained on Joss, grinning, the corner of his mouth curling adorably.
“I’ll get the manager. I’m not taking responsibility for anything,” Tracey scoffed, leaving her post.
“Hi,” Tall, Dark and Handsome said simply. He had a pleasant, deep baritone voice.
“Hi,” she responded.
“It’s another hot one, huh?”
“Sweltering,” Joss agreed.
He peered directly into her eyes. She liked it but it was also a little disarming.
“I hear it’s supposed to be this way all weekend,” he added.
“That’s what I hear.”
His lips were nicely shaped, the bottom one nice and full.
“I guess I shouldn’t complain. It keeps me busy.”
“I imagine.”
On even closer examination, under that dark and grainy stubble was a slight cleft. Joss was a sucker for a man with a dent in his chin.
“Here we go. The manager is on the way,” Tracey said to the repairman. “And, Joss, here’s the portfolio Tom put together for you to go over.”
“Thanks, Tracey. I’ll probably see you again in the next week then.”
“Yep, see ya then. Next!”
Joss glanced back at TD&H. “Have a good day then,” she said lamely.
“Yeah, you too.” He nodded as the manager joined him.
Joss began to walk out when one of the other financial managers stopped her to make sure she’d been waited on. She assured him that she had, thanked him kindly then continued to the exit, arriving as the rugged repairman did. It just so happened his hands were full—toolbox in one and a ladder in the other. Joss held the first door open for him.
“Well, thank you,” he said with a wide smile. He had excellent teeth too.
Joss rushed ahead and opened the second door.
“Thanks again.” He squinted up at the sky. “Whoa, it is hot out here. Being in there, in the cool, makes you forget for a while.”
“I know. It’s nasty, isn’t it?” Joss let the door swing closed and she turned in the direction of her car.
“Take care,” he said then continued on his way.
For shits, Joss peeked over her shoulder, and to her delight, he was doing the same thing. How sad had her life become that she was now thrilled by such a little thing?
* * * *

Joss woke up early the next morning, too sticky and hot to remain in bed and called the superintendent about the air conditioning. She’d been trying to get it to work since she’d returned and now that she needed it, it wouldn’t even turn on.
After taking a cool shower, she put on a thin tank top and a pair of sleep shorts as she puttered around, unpacking from the trip to Hawaii and her sister’s wedding that she’d been neglecting.
There was a knock at the door. She expected it to be the super. Her building was a secured one, so folks couldn’t come and go without being buzzed in. But when she opened the door, it was most certainly not the manager. Instead she met the amazing blue eyes of the man that had occupied her thoughts all night long.
His handsomely rugged features showed surprise as well. The corner of his mouth turned up boyishly. His gaze skimmed over her scant clothing, heating her up again. In a smooth, smug gesture he leaned against the doorjamb.
“You’ve got to be kidding,” Joss commented, amused.
“Did you call for a service, ma’am…?”
Joss snorted at his choice of words and he turned five shades of red then began to back track and trip all over his tongue to correct himself.
“I meant a service man, ma’am. Er…aw, fer fuck! Oh, shit, again, I’m sorry.”
Finally he just hung his head. Joss waited until he peered up at her through his lashes. He was too cute.
“Did my friends put you up to this? You’re not like a male stripper or something on the side, are you?”
“No. I’m really here to repair your AC unit. Your super let me up. I had no idea who lived here.”
Shaking her head at the impossibility of it all, she stepped back and let him in. “This way,” she said, very aware of him at her back. Visions of him doing the most delicious things to her body invaded her mind, just as they had last night while she’d tried to sleep.
