Agasthi, you must learn to draw the sacred symbol accurately,” implored the Ban-Jhakrani or the forest shaman, wrapped in a resplendent white dress with a crown of tall peacock feathers. Her extraordinary life etched on a relucent wrinkled face, she continued to pry stirring sounds from her shaman’s drum that reverberated across the mountains.

Nata, what does ‘sacred’ mean?” asked the playful six-year-old moon-faced Agasthi with light gray eyes. Her loose, white, flared top and pants, twirled in the wind along with her.

The ‘sacred’, is a space and thought held within the folds of the benevolent earth mother,” explained the Ban-Jhakrani.

Nata, what does ‘benevolent’ mean?” the left-handed Agasthi, wondered.

The forest shaman laughed, “You are certainly an inquisitive young shaman; blessed by the primordial essence that unites us all. Now help me to place these peacock feathers, rice, and leaves within this sacred space. For I have much to teach you, but my time in this form…is limited.”

The large geometry drawn vividly on the forest floor, with red and yellow colors, was part of an ancient shamanic invocation to contact the mysterious forest spirits that remained nestled within these thick jungles. The forest adorned with the reverberant sounds of birds, animals, cicadas, scrambling waterfalls, and a bone-chilling wind that swooped across the Himalayan mountain range.

Agasthi, her name embodied in an indecipherable wisdom, followed her grandmother’s instructions while the Ban-Jhakrani added her chanting to the pulsating sounds of her shaman’s drum, to open the doorway of a limitless realm beyond time. And a beguiled crested goshawk swooped down and perched itself on her left shoulder.

The Ban-Jhakrani’s ancient incantations to initiate the young shaman began to increase in pitch and intensity as Agasthi sprinkled water over the rice, leaves, and peacock feathers. Soon the young girl became assiduously immersed in the spirits of the forest, before her eyes began to dilate and magnified all that surrounded her.

Agasthi, held within a trance, became drawn to a prodigious green leaf lying within the sacred space. She dropped to her knees and meticulously examined the giant blade; her dilated eyes following the mid-rib and the veins that branched off it as well as an occult dewdrop, which hovered just above the surface of the leaf.

Mystified, Agasthi peered deeper into this amplified, spherical, translucent world – seeded with infinite moons and stars – when an eerie, dark colossus with a serpent-like head and carmine eyes emerged. Swimming within this dark sea, it swallowed entire moons and numerous stars, before it turned and glared at a petrified Agasthi.

The charred monster abruptly shot across this uncommon convex world with its fangs bared, and a roar that pierced the young girl’s skin. A trembling, horrified Agasthi let out an unrelenting, terror-stricken scream that echoed across the forest before she collapsed, unconscious.

The Ban-Jhakrani stood over her granddaughter and smiled. What she had hoped for had become – the forest spirits had acquiesced. Agasthi had travelled across an immeasurable realm, and experienced an epiphany – a vision – for the very first time. The forest shaman patiently waited for several hours for the young girl to step out of her dreamworld.

What happened, Nata? Did I fall asleep?” Agasthi asked when she finally stirred.

No, my dearest Natini,” the Ban-Jhakrani whispered. “You drifted into a shamanic dream. An unerring state of being when multiple truths are revealed if your heart is pure. Search yourself and then speak of what you saw, for it is very important.”

The young shaman stared at her grandmother, while the recondite, eerie charcoal-black serpent reappeared and a petrified Agasthi began to quiver.

Do not be afraid, my child,” assured the grandmother and held her left hand.

A darkness that shamans have meditated upon…for thousands of years…has arrived,” mumbled Agasthi, lost within her trance.

Why?” the bewildered forest shaman inquired.

For a balance disturbed for so long…must be remedied…a justice delivered,” answered the swaying Agasthi and turned to stare in the direction of the sun.

Who delivered this message?” questioned the Ban-Jhakrani, overwhelmed by the young shaman’s inconceivable first pronouncement.

It was the Whisperer!”

Review Tuesday: Jamrach's Menagerie - #Victorian #Adventure #ReviewTuesday

Jamrach’s Menagerie by Carol Birch
Canongate Books, Ltd., 2011

I was eight years old... I know we came in time to the streets about Ratcliffe Highway, and there I met the tiger. Everything that came after followed from that. I believe in fate. Fall of the dice, drawing of the straw. It’s always been like that.”

Jaffy Brown is a poverty-stricken urchin living in the churning chaos of Victorian London, when his fate finds him. A tiger escapes from the establishment of Mr. Jamrach, who buys and sells exotic animals, and Jaffy is so enchanted by the magnificent beast strolling down Watney Street that he walks up and strokes its nose. The tiger casually attacks hm, but he escapes unharmed. Impressed by the boy’s courage as well as his obvious connection to animals, Jamrach offers Jaffy a job caring for his merchandise. And as Jaffy says, the rest of his life flows from this event. He meets Tim, another of Jamrach’s boys, and his frustrating but enticing sister Ishbel. Jaffy and Tim sign on to a whaling ship which has also been tasked with bringing back one of the dragons rumored to live on a remote island in the South China Sea. The expedition finds and captures one of these fearsome and disgusting creatures, only to have it escape. Some of the ship’s crew believe that the terrible storm that follows represents their punishment for stealing the beast from its home. In any case, the vessel sinks, leaving the crew to drift helplessly in their fragile whale boats and to die of hunger, thirst, disease or madness – one by one.

Jamrach’s Menagerie is a brilliantly written, unconventional tale of one man’s astounding journey. The author brings the Victorian period to life in all its color and filth. Her detailed description of the process of whaling is more vivid, and distressing, than anything Melville ever wrote. Meanwhile, the chapters devoted to Jaffy’s harrowing weeks lost at sea were so realistic and painful that I sometimes had to stop reading after half a dozen pages.

In the interest of avoiding spoilers, I won’t reveal any more of the plot, except to share the fact that Jaffy does survive and find something like a happy ending, but not an easy one. I deeply enjoyed this book, and the imaginative, adaptable, observant character of Jaffy – but from an emotional perspective I found it a difficult read.

This book doesn’t really fit neatly into any category or genre. It includes adventure, love, tragedy, philosophy, poetry, even a touch of magic. Carol Birch makes the Victorian era deeply real, and I gather than Jamrach actually existed, yet I wouldn’t call it an historical novel in the typical sense. It’s a story about the choices we make and their totally unanticipated consequences, about friendship and death, guilt and redemption, and throughout, about the birds and animals who share our planet.

Jamrach’s Menagerie is truly original. That’s only one of the reasons that I recommend it highly.

Excerpt (from Steel Force)

The last time Steel remembered kneeling he was ten years old in church with his mother. This time his feet were pressed against the north wall of the barn, with his hands zip-tied behind his back. They had Tasered him, but now they held guns.

He looked up at fat-faced Yellow and mustached Blue. He was close to the sensory deprivation tank and the shower room door. The cement floor was uncomfortable beneath his knees. Frustration welled up inside him that with all his security and a gun in his hand, he had allowed them to capture him. He hadn’t been focused. Distracted by Christie’s presence.

He felt for the OTF knife in the belt-sheath—it wasn’t there.

Blue smiled. “In case you’re wondering, we found your knife. It’s by the computer.”

Yellow put away his gun, took a quick step, and kicked Steel in the stomach.

Gasping, Steel fell to the floor on his side. He had expected the kick and was ready for it.

We’ve been told to keep this up until you talk,” said Yellow.

Even a couple of days if we have to. And we don’t mind. Do we?”

In answer, Blue put his gun away. He kicked Steel in the right thigh. “Yeah, we’ve got plenty of time.”

Steel groaned. Spinner barked.

Where love leads, a lady follows -- #HistoricalRomance #Giveaway #Travel @EllaQuinnAuthor

Blurb

Even the Worthington least likely to wed may find her perfect match . . .

Marriage has worked out quite nicely for her older sisters, yet Lady Augusta Vivers is certain it would end her studies in languages and geography, and stop her from travelling. But when her mother thwarts her plan to attend the only university in Europe that accepts women—in Italy—she is forced to agree to one London Season. Spending her time at parties proves an empty diversion—until she encounters the well-traveled Lord Phineas Carter-Wood. Still, Europe awaits . . .

Phineas has studied architecture all over the world, yet Augusta is his most intriguing discovery yet. How can he resist a woman who loves maps and far-off lands? But her longing for all things foreign hinders any hope of courtship. When he learns her cousins have offered a trip to Europe, he secretly arranges to join their party. For he is determined to show Augusta that a real union is a thrilling adventure of its own. And when their journey is beset by dangerous obstacles, he gets far more opportunity than he bargained for . . .

Excerpt

Italy!” Her brother’s bellow could probably be heard all over the town house and in Berkeley Square. Possibly even farther.

From her position on the sofa, Lady Augusta Vivers stifled a sigh. She refused to allow her posture to sag or disappointment to show on her countenance. She had known her campaign to be allowed to attend university was not going to be easy. Perhaps she should have started her scheme earlier. Or given her brother a hint to temper his shock.

It is not as if Padua is some unknown place in South America or Africa,” she pointed out calmly.

Where on earth did you come up with such an . . . idea?” Her mother paled a bit and her faint voice pierced the deadened air.

I wish to further my studies.” Augusta fought to keep the exasperation from her tone. Why else would she want to go to university? Not only that, but traveling there and living in Italy for a time would allow her to see a little of the world she had been studying. “As educated as Miss Tallerton and Mr. Winters are, they long ago exhausted the limits of what they can teach me. Which is the reason I have been corresponding with professors in Europe and taking lessons from visiting scholars, hoping to learn more. It is no longer enough.” In fact, her thirst for knowledge had grown to the point that she needed to attend university as much as she needed food or air. “Yet it has become clear that the only way I am going to succeed is by studying with experts. For that, I must attend university.”

But, my dear”—her mother paused for a moment as if to gather her thoughts—“do you not wish to wed?”

Of course she did. Just. Not. Now. “I do not recall anyone asking Charlie if he was forsaking marriage simply because he wished to attend Oxford.” She wished Grace’s brother, properly called the Earl of Stanwood was here. He’d be able to help. Augusta turned her gaze back to Matt. As her guardian and Earl of Worthington, he was the final decision maker. “If I were a boy you would allow me to go.”

The journey begins .... #gayromance #pirates #Scotland #Spain

The Journey Begins cover

Blurb

Jamie MacDonald, a young Scot mourning the deaths of his father and brothers in the ill-fated battle of Culloden, decides to take his mother to the New World. But tragedy and unforeseen circumstance dog Jamie’s journey and he is pressed into service aboard a pirate ship commanded by a ruthless Spaniard.

Antonio Rodriguez is a man with a dark past, but also with an allure Jamie cannot resist.

The two men embark on a stormy relationship—but can their feelings for each other survive the danger that surrounds them, threatening not only their love, but their very lives?

Excerpt

Rodriguez’s dark eyes flashed as he walked slowly toward Jamie. “You are a deal too arrogant, my friend.”

Friend? Is this how you treat your friends? ‘Thank you for your bravery, Jamie, now it’s to the brig with you where you’ll rot till I have appeased my Spanish pride!’”

For a moment he expected Rodriguez to shout for Hugo to drag him back below, but instead he stared at Jamie, his face a mask, unable to be read. Then he said, “You are a brave man. A man I would like to have by my side and call my friend. Can I call you my friend, Jamie?”

Jamie searched Rodriguez’s eyes trying to see if he could discern the slightest trace of mockery there. He could not, nor could he break away from the steadfast gaze the man returned.

Aye,” he was at last able to say, his own voice sounding strange to his ears. “Thatyou can.”

Rodriguez grasped Jamie’s arm. “Come then,” he said. “I have some fine Jamaican rum for a toast.”

A toast to what?”

To our friendship, what else? A toast to show you how much I value this moment.” Rodriguez poured the rum into two small glasses, then held them up to the light. “Venetian glass,” he said, his voice low and sensuous. “Only the finest will do for you, my brave Scotsman.”

Jamie felt his cheeks redden at the effect the silky compliment had on him. His hand trembled slightly as he raised the glass to his lips. He was intensely aware of the other man’s unwavering gaze that remained locked on Jamie as they lowered their glasses.

I envy where that glass has been, Jamie.”

Rodriguez took a step closer, then with a great tenderness, he brushed Jamie’s lips with his own. Jamie gasped, his body jolted by sensation. He reached out and grabbed the man’s arm, at first to thrust him away, then as the kiss deepened, found himself holding onto that arm, pulling Rodriguez into a tight embrace. Never in his life had Jamie experienced a sensation that seared him with pleasure like the feel of Rodriguez’s soft yet demanding lips on his. His cock flared to life as the Spaniard’s tongue slipped inside his mouth, and all Jamie wanted to do was respond in kind.

Wait!” Jamie jerked backward, finding his voice, hoarse though it was. “Stop… this is wrong. I canna’ do this, Captain. We are two men. This isna’ right.”

It is as right as it feels, Jamie.”

The Spaniard still held him, and loathe as he was to admit it, Jamie did not want to break free—but break free he must! With a rough movement, he pushed the other man away.

No, I won’t give in to this.” He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and glared at Rodriguez.

The Captain’s sardonic smile tried to hide the hurt expression his eyes could not. “I am sorry, Jamie. I took advantage of you, and for that I apologize. Please forgive me. It will not happen again.”

Jamie stared long and hard at the man, trying to understand what he was feeling at this moment. His mind was a turmoil of emotion. He liked this man! There was something about him that inspired him, thrilled him. There was no ignoring the way his cock had reacted so damned quickly… And yet, was this not a sign of weakness among men? He had no experience of these things, only what he’d heard in church of a Sunday when he was a child, and didn’t fully understand. Jamie was not a big believer in the Bible or its teachings. He had no fear of God in his far off remote heaven, uncaring for the suffering of the people he was supposed to have created.

Antonio Rodriguez was not a weak man. He was brave—reckless maybe, but brave—and a respected captain. He was handsome, intelligent and would be, Jamie instinctively felt, a loyal friend. But he should not give in to the urges that now coursed through his body.

I am sorry, Captain. I canna’ give what it is you want from me.”

I understand, Jamie.” Rodriguez’s gaze slipped away from Jamie’s face. “I will not trouble you again. You may go.”

Jamie turned and left the cabin, closing the door quietly behind him. He breathed a deep sigh, not of relief, for that he did not feel. What he did feel was a strange sense of loss. He walked to the ship’s side, and gripped the rail until his knuckles turned white, while below him the waves churned and slapped against the side of the ship.

Damnation. These feelings the captain had invoked in him were not so easily shaken off. He could not deny the man’s attraction, or the sense of excitement he felt in his presence. Could he go where Rodriguez wanted to take him? Could he put aside his dislike of what that meant? No, not dislike—fear, perhaps. Aye, that was it. He was afraid—afraid of what he now felt. Afraid of the sensations Rodriguez’s lips had kindled in his body. Even now the memory of those soft, lush lips on his own eager mouth brought a rush of blood to his groin. He groaned with frustration and stared for a long time at the door to the captain’s cabin. Did he dare? Could he go back and face the man and tell him he’d been a fool to reject him? Could he?

He took one uncertain step toward the cabin, and then stopped. Above him the sails, sharply etched against the darkening blue of the sky, billowed and flapped in the wind. He clenched his fists and took a deep breath to steady his resolve, then he knocked on the cabin door. His nerve almost failed him when he heard the command to enter. Swallowing hard, he pushed the door open and stepped inside.

Spirit of the Amaroq - #NativeAmerican #Alaska #Adventure #Salvation @JCharlesBooks

Spirit of the Amaroq cover
Blurb

Pastor Jack Douglas resigns his ministry after a traumatic event and hikes across America. In North Dakota, he finds work on an oil rig until a violent turn of events forces him to seek seclusion in the Alaskan wilderness where he’s stalked by the mythical Amaroq wolf.

In Nome, Jack takes a job on a king crab fishing boat where he continues to struggle with his past tragedies while fighting feelings for the proprietor of a rustic inn, a beautiful Inuit woman, Qaniit.

A man from the past perpetrates a catastrophic event that will once again challenge Jack’s faith. Will Jack survive or will God forsake him once more?

Excerpt

One night a few days later, after spending most of the day in the office, Jack works on getting caught up with the paperwork, payroll, and invoices, ordering, paying bills, and prepping for the next haul. Next to his desk he takes a sandwich out of the small refrigerator he bought to keep meals in so he wouldn’t have to mess up Qaniit’s kitchen, and to avoid her.

Taking his first bite, the office phone rings. Quickly washing his food down with water, he answers on the third ring, “Nasak Fishing Company. This is Jack speaking.”

Jack? It’s Qaniit,” she says barely audible. “Grandfather passed. We’re all going to the house now.”

His heart skips a beat, not only because he hasn’t heard her voice in days, but with this news. He doesn’t want to go to the house. This is a time for family to be together. He is not family, but an employee.

Can you pick me up on the way?” she says.

Oh, great. Ulloriaq had given him the truck for a supply run for the boat this day. Although as a pastor he had helped those in this state of mourning, it’s no longer his place. He doesn’t belong, either as a family-member, or as a pastor. But, she needs a ride. “Okay,” he whispers. He hangs up and drives to the Prospector.

Qaniit waits for him on the porch, her long, black hair blowing across her tender, snowy-white face. As he watches her walk over to the truck, he can’t help but think how she has seen so much tragedy in her life. She climbs in, brushes her hair aside, tucking it behind her left ear and revealing to him such a sad face he feels he might die all over again. First her parents, then her husband, now her grandfather. Malik had raised her. Her protector is gone.

After she buckles in, he spontaneously reaches over, takes her hand in his, gently squeezing it. She looks over at him and he removes his hand, putting it on the wheel to drive.

They ride in silence. Jack glances over at her once, but she stares out through the windshield.

He pulls up, parks and shuts off the engine. She climbs out, starts for the house, but looks back at Jack sitting in the truck. She doubles back, comes over to the open driver window. “What’s wrong?”

He looks at her. “Nothing. I’ll take you back when you’re done.” He looks away from her.

You’re not coming in?”

No. No, I, I don’t think I should. It’s a time for family.” He looks back at her as her hair falls off her ear and covers half of her moonlit face.

She once again brushes at her hair tucking it behind her ear. “Jack, you’ve been a part of our family for a while now.”

Family? He turns his head away from her again and reaches for the amaroq claw, squeezing it.

What’s wrong?”

Nothing.” Hiding it from her, he wipes at his eye to catch a tear.

Qaniit opens the truck’s door, takes his hand. “Come on,” she says.

Are you sure?”

I’m sure.” She tugs on his hand, but he doesn’t budge. “Would you come on?” she says pulling.

Defeated, again, he gets out of the truck. As she leads him inside by his hand, his heart races.

The door opens to reveal many family members including aunts, uncles, cousins, and Ulloriaq and Akiak, who both spot the handholding as they come through the door. Qaniit and Jack release their hands. The family surrounds them. Ulloriaq hugs Jack. The aunts, uncles, and cousins all take turns hugging Qaniit and Jack.

Jack has flashbacks. Memories, sorrow, pain. A sniffling Akiak comes over and hugs him, dripping tears on his shoulder. Jack squeezes the kid and says, “I know, kid. I know.”

They stay for a little while, until after the funeral director retrieves Malik’s body. Jack drives Qaniit back to the Prospector, both riding in silence.

Inside, Jack heads for the stairs as Qaniit closes the front door. “Jack?” she calls to him.

He stops and half-turns to face her.

Thank you,” she says. “For coming in.” She walks over to him, standing a foot away. “It means a lot to me.”

His heart beats faster. He wants to run upstairs, crash down his door, and bury himself in the pillows and hide like he has done so many times these past weeks. “I’m so sorry, Qaniit. Whatever I can do to help.” He looks down at the first step of the stairs.

She examines something on his face, reaches up, he flinches, but she wipes at a small tear welling under his eye. He closes his eyes, tight.

I’m so sorry, Jack,” she says.

He opens his eyes and discovers tears now dripping from her eyes onto her cheeks. He reaches up and wipes some tears from her cheek with the tips of his fingers. However, she sheds more and begins to quiver. He reaches out and pulls her close, hugging her tightly. She buries her face in his chest.

They embrace for quite some time. Sobbing, she soaks his Prospector T-shirt with her tears. After a minute, perhaps two, they pull back and look into one another’s eyes. Her soul is as void as mine.

Out of nowhere, and at the same time, they kiss and hold it.

In an abrupt second, just as fast as they kissed, they pull apart. “I’m sorry,” Jack says pulling away, looking down and away from her. “I…I don’t know what I was thinking.”

No,” she says backing away. “No. No, I’m sorry. I…I don’t know what I was thinking.”

She hurries to her room, Jack watching, feeling like a fool for letting that happen, taking advantage of her grief. That is not me. Who I am. I’ve never acted like this in my entire life. What was I thinking? Was I thinking?

He sprints up to his room and does what he had wanted to do all along, jump into bed, curl up, and hug his pillow. He glances over at his family photo propped up against his Bible. He lies there, staring.
