Staying alive - #Murder #Mystery #GayRomance @JPBowie

Love on the Rocks cover

Fancy a murder mystery, spiced up with some MM romance? Here are two, by my old friend J.P. Bowie! ~ Lisabet

Love on the Rocks

Waking up on a pile of rocks with a bullet in his shoulder isn’t something Joe Brady saw coming, but perhaps the cute paramedic who finds him can do more than just help heal his wound.

Detective Joe Brady wakes up lying at the bottom of a cliff on a pile of rocks with a blond-haired angel hovering over him. No, he’s not in heaven. The blond is Riley Peterson, and his dog Champ is the one responsible for finding Joe. Fortunately for Joe, Riley is a paramedic and quickly gets him the emergency attention he sorely needs.

Shot by his rogue partner Bob Murdoch when Joe discovered Murdoch was running a protection racket for drug pushers, Joe wants to find Murdoch and bring him to justice, but he’s got a long road to recovery in front of him. While Joe is recuperating, Murdoch is arrested, giving Joe time to get to know Riley, the handsome paramedic. The two quickly bond, but Riley has an ex-boyfriend who wants back in Riley’s life and certainly has no qualms about playing dirty to get what he wants.

Slashed tires, an assault in a parking lot, and a prison break all seem set to doom Joe and Riley’s budding relationship. And when the deranged Murdoch determines to make them pay for his fall from grace—at gunpoint—it seems their relationship isn’t the only thing in danger…

Excerpt

Riley Peterson and his dog, Champ are walking on the beach when…

Let’s go, boy!” Champ ran toward him, ball grasped in his mouth which he dutifully dropped at Riley’s feet. “Think you’ve tired yourself out? Let’s go home then.”

They set off toward the steep steps that led to the clifftop when, without warning, Champ veered away, running at a large group of rocks cordoned off and displaying a sign saying Keep Out. Dangerous Rock Slide Area.

He must have seen a rabbit or a squirrel. The parkland at the top of the cliffs teemed with the little critters and they’d often find their way down onto the beach.

Champ had disappeared and Riley sighed with impatience. “Champ!” The dog whined then barked. What the hell? He ran to the rocks and climbed over the makeshift rope fence. “Champ, what is it boy?” He squeezed between two of the larger rocks, then froze. “Jesus…”

There were two bodies, both men, one lying on his back, the other face down. As a paramedic, Riley was used to seeing bodies, some dead, some unconscious, and from the looks of things, the younger of the two was most definitely dead. The back of his head was gone, and despite the fresh salty air, the smell of death permeated the narrow space.

He knelt by the other man and felt his neck for a pulse. It was there, but weak. How long has he been lying there? He pulled his cell phone from his shorts and punched in the number for his field station. “Hey, Val,” he said as soon as the operator answered, “Riley. I’m on the beach near the steps that lead up to Cliffside Drive. There’re two guys here, one dead, one badly injured.” He eased the unconscious man’s jacket away from his chest. “Appears as if he’s been shot just under his right shoulder. Lost a lot of blood by the looks of it. Need a team here right away.”

I’m on it. We’ll have the guys there in a few.”

Thanks.” He shut his phone off and slipped it back into his shorts’ pocket. He touched the man’s bruised face gently. “Hey, buddy, can you hear me?”

The man groaned. His eyes fluttered open and Riley’s breath hitched in his chest. Pale gray eyes gazed at him from under thick, dark eyelashes.

Am I dead?” His voice was thick and croaky.

Not yet.” Riley popped the top of his water bottle and held it to the man’s cracked lips. “You’re super-dehydrated. Sip a little of this. Not too much at first—that’s good…” He opened the man’s jacket further and felt around for any other injuries. “You know what happened?”

I was shot, then I think they must’ve thrown me over a cliff or somethin’. Jeez, I hurt all over.”

I bet. Don’t try to move. The medics are on their way. Who’s the other guy?”

Other guy?” He moved his head just enough to take a look. “Son-of-a-bitch. That’s one of them. What are you doing?” he asked as Riley unbuttoned his shirt.

Checking for injuries.” He couldn’t help but notice how fit the guy was. He pressed with care on the sides of the man’s muscular torso. “Sorry,” he said when the man winced, “but fortunately it looks like just some massive bruising. I don’t feel any broken ribs.” He ran his hands over the man’s legs. “Nothing broken there, either, by the looks of it.”

Feels like every fucking thing is broken.”

Have some more water.” He waited until the man had sipped some more then asked,

What’s your name?”

Brady, Joe… I’m a detective. The other guy’s Martin Boyd. Is he dead?”

Yes. A friend of yours?”

No way. Drug runner. I was arresting him when this happened.” He squinted up at Riley. “You’re kinda cute. All that blond hair. I thought you were an angel. What’s your name?”

Riley chuckled. “Riley Peterson. I’m a medic, and this here’s Champ. He found you.”

Thanks, Champ.”

Murder by Design

An unexpected meeting in a bar gives Detective Sam Walker a real chance of finding long-awaited happiness. All he has to do is stay alive.

Detective Sam Walker gets a surprise phone call the day he wakes up with the hangover from hell. The caller informs him that his name is Justin and that they met the night before in a gay bar. Not only met, but kissed and traded phone numbers and Sam has no memory of it at all. Intrigued, Sam wants to meet Justin again, but any chance of that is delayed when he and his partner are assigned a murder investigation and told to take care of it ASAP.

Sam has a problem, a deeply personal one that he doesn’t talk about, but when he’s with Justin the problem seems to disappear and he’s convinced he’s been given a new lease on life. His elation is short-lived, however, when the case he and his partner are working on takes a dark turn.

Justin also has a problem…Maria Esteban, a fiery-tempered Puerto Rican who owns the fashion company Justin designs for. Theirs is a volatile relationship and when tragedy strikes, the finger of suspicion points at him.

Can Sam save Justin not only from a bigoted detective intent on cracking the case quickly, but from a new and unexpected source, too? Or is their love affair doomed before they can truly savor Sam’s newfound freedom from the past?

Excerpt

Sam is hungover after a night out with colleagues celebrating the taking down of child slave trafficking gang…

His cell buzzed and he reached for it. Not a number or name he recognized. Robertson, Justin?

Sam Walker.”

Hi, Sam.” The voice was nice, but he didn’t recognize it…or did he?

Hi…uh, Justin? Do I know you?”

Um, well…uh, you did last night.”

Last night?” Sam searched his memory banks. I met this guy last night?

Justin laughed lightly. “Well you were kinda drunk, but I’m hurt you don’t remember me. You kissed me. Guess you don’t remember that either.”

I kissed him? He thought harder. After Martin had left—and he did remember that, some of the other guys had split too and he—that was right, he’d taken a cab over to the Blue Bar on Santa Monica.

Uh…were you at the Blue Bar?”

Ah, it’s starting to come back.” Justin laughed again…a nice laugh, low and throaty. “I was sitting at the bar, you came in, smiled at me, sat next to me, bought me a drink. We talked. You said you were a cop. Or was that a come-on? Are you a cop?”

Uh, no, not a come-on. Uh, yeah I’m a cop…detective.”

Okay, so we talked for some time. I figured at some point it was getting late and when I looked at my watch you said, ‘don’t go, and you kissed me.”

Shit. Why couldn’t he remember? And what the hell else did he do—or rather, try to do? “Uh, wow, I’m sorry.”

Sorry you don’t remember me or sorry you kissed me?”

Both, I guess. Hope I didn’t come on too obnoxious.”

That laugh again…so sexy. Why can’t I put a face to it? “No, you didn’t. I said I had to go and you wanted my phone number, so we traded. After you kissed me you said, ‘call me’. So here I am, calling you.”

And I bet you didn’t expect this kind of response. I’m sorry, Justin.”

Don’t be, it’s okay.” His voice was gentle along with that trace of laughter. “You were kinda drunk, so…”

Sam groaned. “I’d like to make it up to you. Maybe meet for a drink sometime? I won’t put any moves on you, promise.”

Well, where’s the fun in that?” Justin’s tone was a definite tease. “Now that you’ve offered, I would like to see you again…tonight? If that doesn’t sound too pushy.”

Uh, can’t tonight. I’m having dinner with my partner and his family.”

Oh, you have a partner?” Justin’s chirpy voice sounded suddenly deflated. “Then I guess this isn’t a good idea.”

No, no…not a partner partner. Working partner.”

Oh, okay. So what’s good for you?”

Well, I’d like to say tomorrow night, but I’d have to call you once I know what my schedule looks like.”

Sounds good.”

Uh, this is going to sound crass, I know, but can you describe yourself so I know who to look for when we fix a time and place?”

Justin’s laughter was contagious. “Look in your phone, Detective. You took a selfie of us last night.”

I did? “I did?” Shit. This is beyond embarrassing. Just how hammered was I? He stared at the photograph of himself and Justin. How could I have forgotten what this hottie looks like? Curly auburn hair and a smile that would light up the darkest room…or heart.

Wow.”

Was that a good wow or a what-was-I-thinking wow?”

That was a very good wow. And I look like a moron. What in hell were you thinking talking to me, anyway?”

I thought you were cute.”

Sam laughed. “Your powers of observation are a mite faulty. Sad thing is I look even worse today.”

How’s that possible?”

Hey!” He laughed again. “You’re right. I promise to clean up my act for when we meet.”

I liked what I saw the first time around and I’m looking forward to seeing you again. Oops, gotta go, Sam. Duty calls. Bye.”

Oh, okay, bye.” Duty calls? What’s that about?

The journey begins .... #gayromance #pirates #Scotland #Spain

The Journey Begins cover

Blurb

Jamie MacDonald, a young Scot mourning the deaths of his father and brothers in the ill-fated battle of Culloden, decides to take his mother to the New World. But tragedy and unforeseen circumstance dog Jamie’s journey and he is pressed into service aboard a pirate ship commanded by a ruthless Spaniard.

Antonio Rodriguez is a man with a dark past, but also with an allure Jamie cannot resist.

The two men embark on a stormy relationship—but can their feelings for each other survive the danger that surrounds them, threatening not only their love, but their very lives?

Excerpt

Rodriguez’s dark eyes flashed as he walked slowly toward Jamie. “You are a deal too arrogant, my friend.”

Friend? Is this how you treat your friends? ‘Thank you for your bravery, Jamie, now it’s to the brig with you where you’ll rot till I have appeased my Spanish pride!’”

For a moment he expected Rodriguez to shout for Hugo to drag him back below, but instead he stared at Jamie, his face a mask, unable to be read. Then he said, “You are a brave man. A man I would like to have by my side and call my friend. Can I call you my friend, Jamie?”

Jamie searched Rodriguez’s eyes trying to see if he could discern the slightest trace of mockery there. He could not, nor could he break away from the steadfast gaze the man returned.

Aye,” he was at last able to say, his own voice sounding strange to his ears. “Thatyou can.”

Rodriguez grasped Jamie’s arm. “Come then,” he said. “I have some fine Jamaican rum for a toast.”

A toast to what?”

To our friendship, what else? A toast to show you how much I value this moment.” Rodriguez poured the rum into two small glasses, then held them up to the light. “Venetian glass,” he said, his voice low and sensuous. “Only the finest will do for you, my brave Scotsman.”

Jamie felt his cheeks redden at the effect the silky compliment had on him. His hand trembled slightly as he raised the glass to his lips. He was intensely aware of the other man’s unwavering gaze that remained locked on Jamie as they lowered their glasses.

I envy where that glass has been, Jamie.”

Rodriguez took a step closer, then with a great tenderness, he brushed Jamie’s lips with his own. Jamie gasped, his body jolted by sensation. He reached out and grabbed the man’s arm, at first to thrust him away, then as the kiss deepened, found himself holding onto that arm, pulling Rodriguez into a tight embrace. Never in his life had Jamie experienced a sensation that seared him with pleasure like the feel of Rodriguez’s soft yet demanding lips on his. His cock flared to life as the Spaniard’s tongue slipped inside his mouth, and all Jamie wanted to do was respond in kind.

Wait!” Jamie jerked backward, finding his voice, hoarse though it was. “Stop… this is wrong. I canna’ do this, Captain. We are two men. This isna’ right.”

It is as right as it feels, Jamie.”

The Spaniard still held him, and loathe as he was to admit it, Jamie did not want to break free—but break free he must! With a rough movement, he pushed the other man away.

No, I won’t give in to this.” He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and glared at Rodriguez.

The Captain’s sardonic smile tried to hide the hurt expression his eyes could not. “I am sorry, Jamie. I took advantage of you, and for that I apologize. Please forgive me. It will not happen again.”

Jamie stared long and hard at the man, trying to understand what he was feeling at this moment. His mind was a turmoil of emotion. He liked this man! There was something about him that inspired him, thrilled him. There was no ignoring the way his cock had reacted so damned quickly… And yet, was this not a sign of weakness among men? He had no experience of these things, only what he’d heard in church of a Sunday when he was a child, and didn’t fully understand. Jamie was not a big believer in the Bible or its teachings. He had no fear of God in his far off remote heaven, uncaring for the suffering of the people he was supposed to have created.

Antonio Rodriguez was not a weak man. He was brave—reckless maybe, but brave—and a respected captain. He was handsome, intelligent and would be, Jamie instinctively felt, a loyal friend. But he should not give in to the urges that now coursed through his body.

I am sorry, Captain. I canna’ give what it is you want from me.”

I understand, Jamie.” Rodriguez’s gaze slipped away from Jamie’s face. “I will not trouble you again. You may go.”

Jamie turned and left the cabin, closing the door quietly behind him. He breathed a deep sigh, not of relief, for that he did not feel. What he did feel was a strange sense of loss. He walked to the ship’s side, and gripped the rail until his knuckles turned white, while below him the waves churned and slapped against the side of the ship.

Damnation. These feelings the captain had invoked in him were not so easily shaken off. He could not deny the man’s attraction, or the sense of excitement he felt in his presence. Could he go where Rodriguez wanted to take him? Could he put aside his dislike of what that meant? No, not dislike—fear, perhaps. Aye, that was it. He was afraid—afraid of what he now felt. Afraid of the sensations Rodriguez’s lips had kindled in his body. Even now the memory of those soft, lush lips on his own eager mouth brought a rush of blood to his groin. He groaned with frustration and stared for a long time at the door to the captain’s cabin. Did he dare? Could he go back and face the man and tell him he’d been a fool to reject him? Could he?

He took one uncertain step toward the cabin, and then stopped. Above him the sails, sharply etched against the darkening blue of the sky, billowed and flapped in the wind. He clenched his fists and took a deep breath to steady his resolve, then he knocked on the cabin door. His nerve almost failed him when he heard the command to enter. Swallowing hard, he pushed the door open and stepped inside.

Things that go bump in the night (@jpbowie #vampire #pnr #mmeroticromance)

Trust Me cover

By J.P. Bowie (Guest Blogger)

I have always been interested in all things supernatural. As a kid I would snuggle down in bed with a well worn copy of some ghost or vampire story purchased with my pocket money from a second hand bookstore. The first time I read Bram Stoker’s classic, Dracula, I couldn’t sleep for weeks. I would lie in bed, eyes wide open waiting for the first light of dawn to peek through the bedroom curtains. You’d think that would have cured me of late night horror story reading – but no. I lost track of how many times I re-read that gothic tale, the terror it stirred in me compounded when I found out that a Scottish castle ‘just up the road’ from where I lived in Aberdeen had been Stoker’s inspiration for Dracula’s lair. Actually it was a good hundred miles from where I lived, but in my vivid imagination a vampire could fly that distance on his bat wings in the twinkling of an eye.

My love for vampires was given a boost when I read Ann Rice’s Interview with the Vampire. Here was a whole new kind of vamp. Instead of Stoker’s soulless monster, Rice’s undead men were elegant and alluring, though just as dangerous at times. Always the romantic, I wanted to write about characters like that, and started with a short story, Vampire Dreams, then graduated to a full length novel, My Vampire and I, which became an eight part series. Yes, even vampires deserve happy endings.

I had to try my hand at the occasional ghost story, especially when the plot for one was handed to me on a plate. My parents’ house was besieged by a poltergeist for several weeks until we got to the root of the problem. I wrote A Ghost Story – yes, that’s the title, based on the events I witnessed firsthand. Of course, I added a hot romance between the two male protagonists along with the eeriness of furniture being overturned, loud banging noises and doors suddenly flung open then slammed shut. All good fun, although I have to admit, the door slamming part made me jump a bit!

Recently, I followed that up with Highland Hearts, about the ghost of a man who couldn’t leave the home he loved even after he’d passed. When a great-great-great (and I think more greats) nephew inherits the old pile, his first thought is to dump it as quickly as he can. But once again, ghostly intervention prevails, along with romance, and a happy ending for all is assured.

I love writing fun stories like these, but sometimes the muse takes me on a different path and a more serious tone. My latest release, Trust Me, deals with a subject that some may find objectionable.

Here’s the blurb:

Scott Riley is living with a terrible secret — one he dares not share with his family or friends. Who can he turn to…who can he trust?

After losing his job because of one man’s actions and lies, Scott Riley is desperately seeking employment or he will have to give up his car and his apartment, perhaps even return home. Being the victim of rape, he feels shame, humiliation and a deep seated anger that he cannot bring his attacker to justice because of what he thinks it might do to his parents. Rather than have them live with the knowledge of what happened to their only son, he does everything in his power to spare them, even at a cost to his own happiness.

When Ross Nelson offers Scott a position in his software company, Scott feels that this change in his luck may prove to be the turning point where he can put his painful memories behind him. Although aware of the obstacles inherent in an office romance, Scott and Ross soon find themselves irresistibly drawn to one another. But Scott’s nemesis refuses to stop tormenting him with texts and phone messages, some obscene, others that contain threats and derision.

Can their love for each other overcome the ravings of a deranged stalker, or will they be torn apart by the clear and present danger this man represents?

Excerpt

The strident buzz of his alarm clock woke Scott from a dark dream he was glad to break free from. It was always the same. The sensation of being trapped, of hands around his throat, visions of a leering face, a struggle, futile against his attacker who was so much bigger and stronger, the pain from his head being struck over and over until blackness swallowed him. The daytime hours gave him some freedom from the horror, although even then, so many times his thoughts would be tainted by memories of that heinous day more than three months ago.

He used to enjoy dreams. When they were just that…dreams. Dreams of people he knew and didn’t dread, or of someone he didn’t know but wished he did. Someone holding him, kissing him. He’d awake aroused, his mind trying to recapture those sensual moments—but that was before Elliot.

He pushed himself out of bed. He didn’t want to start the morning thinking of that bastard. Perhaps this day would turn out to be a better one. Maybe, after three months of looking for a new job he’d finally catch a break.

After relieving himself, he splashed his face with cold water in an effort to clear his mind of the lingering shadows those dreams would haunt him with. He prepped the coffee machine and turned on the TV for the morning news. The pinging sound from his cell phone alerting him that he had a text message, made his stomach churn. Get a grip… He’d changed his number again, so it couldn’t be from him. He picked his cell up and stared at the message then let out a long shuddering breath as he read the words.

Good morning Scotty. Got a job yet? Didn’t think so. Nobody wants to hire a pussy like you.

No matter that he’d received texts like this several times a day, ever since he’d left Blackwell and Norris, his last employer, he had not become immune to them. They still had the power to make him sick to his stomach. Not so much the actual messages, and this one was mild compared to the filth he sometimes read on the screen, but the idea that the man who sent them, the man responsible for him losing his job, who had assaulted him, the creep had somehow managed to find a way to communicate with him, yet again. He had changed his cell number three times and still the bastard had managed to track him down. He shouldn’t be too surprised, he supposed. Anyone with a knowledge of software and computer programming could probably do the same thing. Just about anything could be hacked if you knew how. What he couldn’t understand was why Elliot persisted in cyberstalking him. He couldn’t believe the SOB thought he could wear Scott down, that he would actually respond to any of the often obscene texts he received.

Surely he couldn’t imagine for one minute that I’d ever want to see him or talk to him again. He can’t be that much of a maniac. No, he’s just sick—dangerously sick.

His coffeemaker beeped and Scott poured himself a mug of the strong, black brew adding a bit of sugar. At least today he had something to look forward to. After the last two weeks of failing to secure an interview from the dozens he’d applied for, he’d finally managed to get an appointment with Nelson Enterprises, a fairly new company, but one that had received glowing accolades in Tech News. Under the direction of its young innovator, Nelson Enterprises was quickly making a name for itself in the software design and marketing industry. Maybe, just maybe, his luck would change for the better. Maybe.

Coming out of the shower he heard his cell ping again.

Shit… That fucker is determined to ruin what I’d hope was going to be a better day.

Once he’d ascertained that the text was from Elliot he was going to ignore it. allow him to bring me down again? But a couple of the words drew his attention. He felt the blood drain from his face as he read the message.

Come suck my cock. You know you want to.

If Scott could have afforded a new cell phone, he’d have thrown the one he held in his hand against the wall.

Home again, home again! (#MM #paranormal #giveaway)

By J.P. Bowie (Guest Blogger)

About six years ago Phil and I decided we wanted to go on a European tour, Italy, France, the UK. We actually got as far as sending a deposit, picking out hotels etc, then Phil got sick. It turned out to be a serious heart problem which involved a triple by-pass, some complications that necessitated the use of feeding tube, all of which put the kybosh on our travel plans. It seemed that each time we started making future plans something would crop up and we’d have to cancel. Last year we decided that barring the Apocalypse, we were going to Europe in April 2016. By the time we put all our plans together for this trip of a lifetime, we would be gone for close to six weeks!

Good Heavens,” certain friends declared, that’s far too long, but we forged ahead and left on April 12th for Rome. After 4 days in the Eternal City and thoroughly overawed by all it represents, we boarded a cruise ship which took us to Naples, Corfu, Crete, Santorini, Dbrovnik, Split and Venice. We spent a further three days in Venice then flew to Scotland, then to Madrid, then to Cornwall and finally London. We flew home on May 22nd – 40 days and 40 nights later, thoroughly exhausted but with memories to last us a lifetime – and photographs and stories with which to bore anyone within listening distance.

During that time I had two new releases that had to wait for my return to get some promo going. https://www.pride-publishing.com/book/never-too-late and http://www.mlrbooks.com/ShowBook.php?book=JPBWTRKL

But today I want to tell you about my latest paranormal romance – Highland Hearts – which is available for preorder with a general release date of July 12th. I love writing about Scotland, probably because I was born there, and it was a thrill to visit again last month after many years away.

Blurb

Callum Robertson has inherited his grandfather’s mansion in northern Scotland, but the house comes with a history he knew nothing about—should he be thrilled, or feel threatened as the house seems to lure him in?

When Callum Robertson first sees the old Scottish country mansion his grandfather bequeathed him, his immediate instinct is to sell the antiquated pile for whatever he can get for it—admittedly not much in a downturned market. Then he meets Craig MacPherson, a local farmer with auburn curls and sparkling gray eyes, and suddenly the gloomy old house doesn’t look quite the white elephant it first appeared to be.

Craig tells Callum that it’s rumored the house is haunted but by what or whom no one seems to know. Books flying off shelves then being mysteriously replaced give Callum pause to reconsider his rejection of the idea of an actual ghost haunting the place. When he finds a journal relating to the history of his family, he is, by turn, intrigued then fascinated as the saga unfolds through the writings of his ancestors.

An encounter with what he feels must be the spirit of his great-great-great-uncle Alistair makes him change his mind not only about selling the house, but also about his future with Craig.

Here’s a short excerpt:

My heart’s in the Highlands, my heart is not here,
My heart’s in the Highlands a’chasing the deer...
~ Robert Burns

Chapter One

Callum Robertson climbed out of his BMW and surveyed, with a fair degree of shock, the property he had inherited from his grandfather, Edward Robertson. The old man Callum scarcely knew of, had never met, had bequeathed this—he wasn’t quite sure what to call it—but the word ‘folly’ might be the one he was searching for. He’d heard it used to describe things that might have been built for decorative purposes only. What he was looking at wasn’t really a folly, despite the several griffin and gargoyle heads that lined the building’s walls and eaves. It could be lived in, he supposed, as he walked towards the several steps that led to an overly ornamental front door flanked by two rather stiff and comical looking lions.

Someone goose you?” he asked the one on his left which stared back at him, a glazed expression in its strangely crossed eyes. Shaking his head he inserted the large key into the brass lock and turned it. The heavy door creaked open and he couldn’t stop the wry chuckle that slipped from his lips.

Cue the creepy music,” he muttered.

Once inside, he gaped at the size of the entry hall he’d walked into. The afternoon sun, streaming through the stained glass windows over his head, illuminated the interior better than any spotlight. Colours of green and blue danced over the oak paneled walls and marble floors and picked out the crystal prisms on the chandelier that hung in majestic splendor from the vaulted ceiling. To his right, a staircase curved upwards to the floor above. It reminded him of the set in the musical “Sunset Boulevard” that he’d seen two or was it, three years ago, in Edinburgh, or Manchester maybe? He traveled around so much he found it hard to remember particular dates and places after a time.

Amazing,” he murmured then entered a large room off the cavernous entry. Obviously the living room, it too sported paneled walls adorned with portrait and landscape paintings. The furniture was shrouded in dust sheets—some, probably high backed chairs, giving the appearance of the room’s silent guardians. Callum was glad he’d left the front door open or the silence would have been oppressive, but from outside he could hear the chirping of birds and the rustle of leaves stirred by a soft breeze that brought a fresh scent into this too long closed up mausoleum.

What am I going to do with this lot?” he said aloud as he left the room and started climbing the stairs to the upper level.

It’s all he had to leave you,” Matthew Cross, his grandfather’s solicitor had told him, “but the good thing is it’s free and clear, no mortgage to worry about, just the upkeep really.”

And that would be fierce. The place was huge. Seven bedrooms, Cross had told him, six bathrooms, a library, a dining room to seat twelve, a fully equipped kitchen and five acres of land. There was even a pool, thankfully indoors. He couldn’t begin to imagine how much it would cost to keep an outdoor swimming pool heated in Scotland. Even indoors it would be a bloody fortune most likely. Well, he’d have to sell the place, that’s all. Although finding a buyer in a depressed market for a mansion north of Inverness, miles off the beaten track, and from the looks of things, needing quite a bit of work, might just prove impossible.

He paused at the door to one of the bedrooms. Am I being an ingrate? he wondered as he pushed it open and stepped inside. In the dim light he could make out the shape of an immense four poster bed that dominated the room. He walked over to the window and pulled open the heavy brocade curtains letting welcome daylight fill the room. The bathroom was an eye-opener. A huge marbled space with an enormous bathtub on clawed feet, complete with brass fittings that included a hand-held shower.

Nice...” He had a sudden longing to fill the bath and take a good long soak in sudsy water. Hmm... much better than that plastic piece of rubbish in my flat. He caught his reflection in the large gilded mirror over the sink and stopped to peer at himself for a moment. He looked tired, he thought. There were shadows under his blue eyes. Too many nights poring over sales sheets and inventories. He ran a hand through his dark, almost black hair, then turned on the tap to splash his face with water. After a lot of rumbling and cranking noises a thin stream of something brownish yellow trickled out.

Yuck. The tank’s probably rusted through,” he muttered, changing his mind about refreshing himself. He was about to turn it off when with a loud gurgle and a sudden rush, the water poured out, growing clearer every second.

Not so bad, just needed using.
