Excerpt

Two demon guards clad in black body armor entered the barracks. Their red eyes glowed behind dark face shields. They approached Victor and one guard said, “Get up and come with us.”

All the guards sounded and looked alike. They were even the same height and body structure.

Victor knew better than to refuse. There would be no point in fighting, even if he was so inclined.

He guessed he would be going to one of two possible places. It would either be the punishment chamber because he’d killed Slate too quickly or -- and this was more likely -- to the demon masters who had bargained with him to kill for their entertainment.

The guards brought Victor out of the barracks and down a steel corridor to an elevator at the end. They boarded it. Except for the soft whir of the elevator descending, there was silence.

It stopped with an almost imperceptible lurch. The door opened and Victor, accompanied by the guards, stepped into a spacious room with an enormous glass ball in the center of it. Several couches surrounded it. While the upholstery resembled leather, Victor’s sense of smell told him the couches were covered with material that hadn’t come from any four-legged animal.

He’d been in this room before. Here, the demons had bargained with him for the lives of his fellow gladiators, their mates, and their cubs. Here, he’d traded his integrity and his soul for their lives.

The guards disappeared into dark corners of the room.

Since he had no intention of sitting on the foul furniture, Victor stood near the glass ball and waited.

The ball glowed faintly at first. Then it brightened. From within, two demon masters -- one male and one female -- stared at him. He knew they weren’t actually there. The ball was similar to television. He could see and hear them, but they were far away.

The male had ink-black, elbow-length hair. Tall and slim, he was dressed from head to foot in red. The female had short white hair. Her skin was nearly as pale as her form-fitting white dress. Both demons stared at him with black eyes.

Your game has improved, Victor,” said the male, “but I’m afraid you still haven’t mastered the art of performing. Your kills aren’t entertaining enough, but for now that’s beside the point. We haven’t called you here to critique your style, but for another reason.”

We have something special planned for you,” the female continued. “There’s a new contender in the tower -- one who has seen you fight and wishes to face you in the arena.”

A Mile A Chapter - Writing and Exercise ( @KateHillRomance #pnr #werewolf #vampire)

Grit cover

By Kate Hill (Guest Blogger)

I love writing. To me, it’s a way to escape as well as a way to express myself. There is a short list of things I don’t like about writing. At the top of that list is that writing is sedentary.

It’s easy to sit at a desk and get lost for hours in a book. For me, sitting for extended periods of time can be a problem, especially now that I’m older. Body parts stiffen up and I have a pelvic issue that is aggravated by sitting. I also enjoy movement, and for most of my life I’ve worked out on a regular basis. Though I set aside time for formal workouts at least five days a week, I’ve found it helpful both physically and emotionally to sneak in spurts of exercise throughout my day.

Since exercise and writing are important in my life, I’ve found ways to combine the two, in particular during the editing stages of my books. One of my favorite ways to do this is my mile a chapter routine. I work on edits and proof reading for one chapter, and then I get up and walk a mile. That gives me a fifteen to twenty minute break between chapters that allows me to exercise my body and also clear my mind so that I’m more focused when I sit down to work on the next chapter. If I’m doing a five chapter novella, by the time I’m finished, I’ve walked five miles, which is about ten thousand steps. I love to wear a pedometer so that I can keep track of my steps throughout the day. Sometimes I’ll do other types of exercise in between chapters as well. Whatever keeps me moving, feeling good, and inspired to work.

I use a similar routine when I’m writing a first draft. I set a goal of five hundred or one thousand words and do some type of exercise in between. It can be a short walk, yoga, or calisthenics. Five to ten minute movement breaks are preferable when I’m working on a first draft because I don’t want to lose track of the story. When writing a first draft, I like to go with the flow, so if I’m in the middle of a scene that I want to finish, I won’t stop at a particular word count, but in general I try to get up and move every half hour to an hour.

As a writer, I’ve found that stretching is especially important because typing for long periods of time creates tension in my upper body. Unfortunately, stretching is something that I don’t do often enough throughout the day. I find that keeping an exercise journal motivates me and reminds me to fit stretching into my day. The journal also makes me happy because it’s another kind of writing and it makes referencing past routines easy.

Do you like working out? What are some ways you enjoy fitting exercise into your daily routine?

Zari, a vampire warrior, helped Grit escape the tower where he had been imprisoned. She had feelings for Grit when they'd first met, but at the time he had been mated to another wolf. Now that he's on his own, they're free to explore their feelings as they fight side by side as part of the rebellion against the demons. Haylen, the demon who resurrected Grit, offers a bargain that may save or destroy the rebellion. Whatever the outcome, Zari and Grit intend to face it together and explore the once forbidden passion between them.

Overcoming Writer’s Block  (#pnr #guestblog @katehillromance)

By Kate Hill (Guest Blogger)

It’s a great feeling when you’re working on a book and everything is flowing well. The characters are talking to you and to each other and the actual story is following the outline—or at least following it closely enough that you don’t need to rework major areas. Then something happens. Dialogue gets stilted and you realize the scene you’re working on doesn’t make sense. You have to fix the problem and get back on track. At times that’s easier said than done.

It’s inevitable that a writer will eventually experience some form of writer’s block. Sometimes it’s a shortage of ideas and other times it’s the inability to express ideas. I’d like to share my three favorite ways to overcome writer’s block and if you’d like, please share your favorites in the comments. It’s always good to know what helps someone else because it could be the nudge you need to push through your bout of writer’s block.

Method #1: Go for a walk or a run. Maybe it’s the fresh air or the change of scenery, but when I go for a walk or a run I almost always get a flow of writing ideas. I also feel better and more focused when I exercise. Feeling invigorated helps my creativity.

Method #2: Take a shower. I don’t know why, but I always get my best ideas in the shower. This method in particular helps me if I’m stuck on a scene. Sometimes when I’m sitting at the keyboard trying to write a tricky scene, nothing makes sense. As soon as I step under a warm flow of water in the shower, the scene magically plays in my mind and the problem is solved. The biggest issue with this method is trying to remember the details because I can’t type in the shower.

Method #3: Write something else. Sometimes the best way to overcome writer’s block is to put aside the story I’m working on and write another, even if it’s a piece of fan fiction that no one will ever read, except me. Working on something unrelated gets my creativity flowing. Once I’ve spent some time relaxing by writing a no-pressure story, I can return to my current work in progress with fresh enthusiasm. An added benefit to this method is the story you work on to help with your writer’s block might turn out to be one you pursue and the start of a new series.

These three methods have helped me overcome writer’s block. While working on my latest release, Captain’s Mercy, I used all three. My hero, Jonah, could be troublesome. He wasn’t the easiest man to deal with, for me and for the other characters in the book. It took quite a few jogs and showers to work out the details of his story. It was a lot of fun, though, and I hope readers enjoy his book as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Happy reading and happy writing!

Blurb:

Mercy Brown's life changes when she accepts a position as companion to the disabled sister of wealthy shipyard owner Jonah Barnes. She is instantly attracted to the rugged former sea captain, even if his brusque manner offends her. Mercy soon finds herself entangled in the quirky family's secrets.

From the first, Mercy is troubled by prowlers, disturbances from the attic, and unearthly howls on the property. After meeting several unusual household members, including a groundskeeper who works by night and the mischievous Maxwell Barnes, Mercy realizes she should flee while she can.

Pages from Mercy's first novel go missing and Jonah's domineering personality causes tension in the house. Only Mercy's fondness for her young companion, Faith Barnes, as well as her fascination with Jonah prevent her from leaving, but will her desire for him endanger her life?

Excerpt from Captain's Mercy

On their way downstairs, she asked, "What were you doing in the attic? I thought I heard howling up there a short time ago and then a crash."

"The wind, I'm sure. No doubt the crash you heard was Michaels. He tripped over an old trunk. He's up there now, making repairs on a window that was blown open by the storm. He's also trying to get rid of more unwanted guests of the flying rodent variety, so I remind you to stay away from the attic."

"Why do you suppose the pests keep coming back?"

"I'm not sure. My expertise is the sea. Ask me about whales and sharks and I could probably answer. Bats are another story."

"Do you still go to sea?" she asked, eager to keep her mind off the storm.

"Not as much as I used to."

"Do you miss it?"

"At times. I miss the straightforwardness of being at sea. The simplicity. Aboard ship, a man is valued more for what he knows than for his bloodlines."

"You don't have much use for polite society, do you?"

"As long as rich men keep buying my ships, I like it well enough."

"Is that why you partnered with Max?"

"Partly. Max is intelligent and good at business. He knows how to mingle with those kinds of people and put them at ease so they'll make the best deal."

"I see. The business world is all about using people."

"Precisely."

"It sounds very cutthroat and lonely to me."

"Maybe, but playing the game is better than being poor, isn't it? I know. I've been on that side of it too. Faith and Max don't remember like I do. They were young when we could barely make ends meet."

They had reached the library and he gestured for her to sit on the couch. He joined her, but kept a respectable distance.

"So you went to sea to take care of them. Do you ever regret it?"

"Not for an instant. There's nothing I wouldn't do for them. My only regret is what happened to Robert." Pain glistened in his dark eyes, taking her aback. He always seemed so strong, even cold at times. He rarely displayed any vulnerability.

Strangely, she wished to comfort him.

"I'm sure what happened to him was quite beyond your control."

"That's not the only thing, it seems." He stared deeply into her eyes and edged closer--so near that they almost touched.

"Mr. Barnes, please." She had intended the words to sound like a warning. Instead they came out like a plea.

At the next clap of thunder, she instinctively jumped and flung her arms around him. He held her snugly and while she knew she should pull away, she didn't want to. She felt safe and secure in his embrace, but it was more than that. The feel of his body, his heart beating against her cheek and his divinely masculine scent aroused her in a way she couldn't deny.

"Mercy," he murmured. When he covered her mouth in a possessive kiss, she didn't even try to stop him, but surrendered, just like Macie to Captain Bristle.

I'm part of Werewolf Week! (#werewolf #interview #eroticromance)

Kate Hill has been hosting a massive celebration of wolf shifters over at her blog Compelling Beasts. She invited my werewolf from Rajasthani Moon to come by and answer here questions. You'll find the interview, plus a thrilling excerpt featuring a werewolf attack, here:

http://kate-hill.com/compellingbeastsblog/2016/04/28/werewolf-week-character-interview-with-pratan-pratihar-from-rajasthani-moon-by-lisabet-sarai/

She wouldn't let me post a picture of Pratan. Here's how I imagine him.

Wouldn't you fall in love with this guy?

The excerpt at Kate's focuses on shape shifting. If you're looking for something sexier, try this one...

Pratan lifted her off the horse. She cringed at the nasty slurping sound as her pussy and rear hole released the twin dildos. Both orifices felt loose and raw. Her shoulders and thighs ached from the strain of fighting off orgasms.

Cradling her in his arms, the bandit carried her to a low divan near one wall and laid her gently on the silken cushions. Despite the soft fabric, the stripes on her back flared into fresh anguish.

Thank you.” Her voice was hoarse and strange to her ears. “I don’t think I could have borne any more.”

What makes you think we’re finished?” he asked with a devilish grin. Nevertheless his touch was tender as he brushed her tangled hair off her forehead. Kneeling beside the couch, he turned her face to his.

Those eyes again. The eyes of a madman—a beast—a god. She wanted to look away, but his gaze held her fast, searching her mind, or so it seemed. An awful temptation seized her. She would tell him everything—about the parchment, about her mission… Perhaps then he would be merciful and let her rest.

Before she could act on the impulse, though, he leaned in to claim a kiss. Automatically, despite her sore muscles, she reached up to encircle him with her arms. His firm lips sealed hers, capturing her moans of new pleasure. Her battered cunny wept with new need. As he plundered her mouth like the brigand he was, Cecily could do nothing but surrender.

He tasted of spices, the remnants of their lavish repast. Hot musk rose from his sweat-slicked skin. She felt his knotted muscles bunch and twist under her fingers as he straddled her prone form, their mouths still locked. His rigid member prodded her pubis. Despite her exhaustion and pain, she wanted him. Arching her back, she struggled to align her cleft with his teasing cock. Her stretched quim had never felt so empty.

Pratan broke the kiss, chuckling. Now he gripped her wrists in his huge hands, trapping her against the upholstery. “I thought you’d had enough!”
