Who’s on top? #BDSM #femdom #erotica

The Heart of the Deal teaser

If you survey my back list, you’ll get the definite – and correct – impression that I’m interested in power exchange. I prefer that term to the more succinct “BDSM” or “D/s”, because it better expresses the nature of my fascination. For me, the attraction of BDSM lies in the intimate and complementary connection between the dominant and the submissive. The submissive voluntarily surrenders power to the dominant, who explicitly accepts both that power and the concomitant responsibility for the sub’s welfare. This is the core transaction. Whatever happens afterward – spanking, bondage, fire play, needle play, sensory deprivation, as well as explicitly sexual activities – depends on this mutual trust.

You can have power exchange without traditional BDSM activities. If you can ask, “who’s on top?” and get a clear answer, you may have a power exchange situation going on, even if none of the familiar BDSM trappings are present.

I’ve labeled my most recent novel, The Heart of the Game, as “BDSM”. It is all about power, and the way it shifts among the characters. However, in many of the erotic scenes, there’s not a whip or handcuff to be found. Nevertheless, much of the excitement derives from the underlying power exchange.

Here’s an example, an exclusive excerpt not previously available online.

It hits me like a ten ton lorry when I get to my room. Desire: intensely physical, wet, hungry, messy, uncontrolled desire. I somehow managed to stifle it during my conversation with Rick, but now it pounces, threatening to tear me apart. Without ceremony, I thrust my hand into my soaked panties, frantically kneading my swollen clit. In fifteen seconds I’m panting on the bed, shivering in the aftermath of my climax.

Now that that is over with, I can think more clearly. My lust simmers rather than boils. I turn off all the lights in the room, and open the blinds.

Rick’s room is across from mine. I noticed this during his tour. His blinds are shut, but I can see his form silhouetted against them.

In the dark, I find my red satin nightgown and slip it over my head. The fabric slithers coolly over my still-heated flesh. It’s a simple garment; spaghetti straps, plunging neckline, and sides slit to the top of my thighs.

Next, I remove the light bulb from the lamp by the bed and throw it into the wastebasket.

Finally, taking a deep breath, I press the button labeled “4” on the intercom panel.

Raoul speaking. Can I help you?”

This is Ruby. Sorry to bother you, but my reading light seems to be missing a bulb.”

I’ll be there in a flash.”

For the next ninety seconds, I sit on the bed in the darkened room, watching my breath flow in and out, trying to calm my heart.

There’s a knock, and then a soft, Spanish-tinged voice. “Ruby?”

I stretch out on the bed, adjusting my position so that my hips swell provocatively under the crimson satin and the fabric parts to reveal my bare thigh. “Come in.”

Turquoise reflections from the swimming pool outside are the only illumination. Still, I know that Raoul can see well enough. There’s a sharp intake of breath as he takes in my attire and my posture. I pretend not to notice. “It’s that lamp, there on the night table.”

He leans over to fumble with the fixture. His naked forearm, furred with fine black hair, is inches from me. I catch a whiff of his sweat as I prop myself up on one arm, as if to supervise. I am beginning to enjoy myself.

My strap slips off my left shoulder. My left breast tumbles halfway into view. The handyman pretends to occupy himself with his task, screwing in the new bulb with exaggerated care. I can hear his accelerated breathing. I fancy I can hear his heart beating faster because of my proximity.

Finally he switches on the lamp. Warm light spills over the bed. “There you go,” he says, beginning to straighten. My hand on his arm stops him. He looks at me, hardly daring to believe what he reads in my face. Desire, and willingness. I run my fingers lightly down his forearm, just brushing the fur, sensing the muscles shifting under his skin. When my fingers find his, I grasp his hand, and slowly bring it to cover my exposed breast.

He gasps, but takes advantage of the situation, cupping my warm flesh in his palm, lightly squeezing the nipple. “Thank you, Raoul,” I whisper. “I appreciate your prompt service.”

His confused lust arouses me. Nothing turns me on like a helpless, horny man. Sitting up, I slip off both straps and let the shimmering fabric slide down to my waist. He picks up his cue and begins to symmetrically massage my other breast. He is skilled, his touch at once firm and gentle. When he addresses himself to my swollen nipples, he twists them just the way I enjoy. I purr softly as his caresses awaken echoes in my sex.

Lovely,” I sigh. Reaching out a finger, I run it along the length of his fly, testing the hardness beneath. “Wouldn’t you be more comfortable if you took those off?”

Whatever you say,” he replies with a smile. Standing back, he strips his shirt over his head in one smooth motion, then pulls down the stressed zipper. Under his slacks, he wears black silk boxers. He pauses, giving me a moment to appreciate his magnificent physique. Then he pulls down the shorts, letting them drift to the floor and revealing an impressive erection.

Come closer,” I encourage. When he does, I take his cock in both hands and begin to play. I stroke him, knead him, trace his veins with the barest touch of my fingertip. He moans. I cup his balls in my palm and give them an exploratory squeeze. He shudders in delight.

Feel good?” I squeeze harder, at the same time pinching the fleshy bulb between forefinger and thumb. His groaning is answer enough.

He’s letting me do whatever I want, and that makes me hotter than ever. I release him, stand and walk over to the chair near the window. He’s about to follow, but I stop him with a glance. “No, you stay there. For now.”

Settling in the chair, I begin to fondle myself through the nightgown. He strokes himself as he watches. My familiar fingers feel strange and wonderful shrouded in satin. The fabric slithers over my folds, smoother than the smoothest skin. At first, I am delicate, letting the lovely stuff whisper between my legs. Soon, though, I need more. I’m rougher and raunchier, digging both hands into my aching cleft. A dark stain of wetness spreads from my center, until my whole lap is soaked.

Raoul’s eyes are riveted on the damp fabric, enticed by what he knows lies underneath. His nostrils flare as my musk fills the room. His cock, encircled by his busy fingers, strains rigidly toward the ceiling. His sensuous lips are curved in a half-smile.

He’s lovely and masculine, and right now, I know he’s mine to command. He’ll do whatever I ask. I rise, reach for the hem of my garment and pull it over my head. He licks those full lips at the sight of me—dark thatch, ivory thighs, glistening cunt-lips as crimson as my gown.

Review Tuesday: Coaching Rayna by Pebbles Lacasse - #BDSM #eroticromance #ReviewTuesday

Coaching Rayna cover

Coaching Rayna by Pebbles Lacasse
Excessica, 2018

Rayna doesn’t have the time or energy for sex. Between working full-time as a dental hygienist, caring for her teenage kids, and trying to keep up with the housework, she’s exhausted by the end of the day. Still, she can’t stop herself from fantasizing about her hunky next-door neighbor. Though Rayna hasn’t been intimate with anyone since she kicked out her sleazy ex-husband, she has no trouble imagining what it would be like to be fucked by the powerfully-built younger man.

Simon, or Coach as everyone calls him, runs a gym, and he looks it. He’s massive and muscular, with shoulders that could carry an ox and thighs like tree trunks. Of course, Coach couldn’t possibly be interested in a frumpy single mother ten years older than he is, but Rayna finds it fun to dream.

Coach was attracted to the pretty, competent woman in the next house from the moment he moved in to his place, three years before. If she were any other female, he would have had her in his bed, or hanging in bondage from his basement ceiling, long ago. With Rayna, he has held himself back, out of friendship, respect, and a sense that she’s out of his league. She might be frightened by his dominance. She might despise him for it. In any case, she doesn’t seem like a woman who’d engage in casual sex, and that’s the only kind Coach ever has. He makes it completely clear to his many girlfriends that their sexual interactions will never be more than recreation. That’s all that Coach wants—or feels that he deserves.

Then one warm summer Saturday, he catches her watching him as he mows his lawn. He offers an invitation that both understand will involve sex. To his surprise and delight, she accepts. During their first encounter, he drops his guard enough to let her know she’s dealing with a man who likes to be in charge and to play rough. Instead of running away, she’s open and yielding, eager to have him lead her along new paths of pleasure.

The more time they spend together, the more they both realize their connection goes beyond the physical. Still, each of them feels unsure about the possibility of a deeper relationship. Rayna is certain he’ll tire of her as he has of all his other women. Coach worries that she’ll be terrified or disgusted if he fully reveals the hungry cruelty of his “inner demon”. It takes a near-fatal intervention by someone from Coach’s past to convince them that they must be together, regardless of the obstacles.

I really enjoyed this book, the first work I’ve read by Pebbles Lacasse and one of the most realistic romance novels I’ve met. The book brims with genuine emotion as well as erotic heat. The characters are complex and multi-layered, with believable flaws and idiosyncracies. The barriers to Rayna’s and Coach’s relationship are real, not some flimsy excuse for keeping the couple apart until the HEA. Indeed, even the happy ending is nuanced, hinting at the challenges that lie ahead for Coach and Rayna as they commit to one another. Strong as their love may be, it doesn’t erase either Rayna’s or Coach’s psychological scars.

Relationships are difficult. People harbor misconceptions about what their partners want and believe. Ms. Lacasse has captured these truths, with great insight.

The erotic scenes in Coaching Rayna are fantastic. The mood swings from desperate intensity to deep tenderness to borderline silliness, just like in real-life sex. Despite Coach’s sexual prowess, he’s not a superman. Meanwhile, Rayna’s willingness to experiment clashes with her self-image as inexperienced and unattractive. Some readers might object to the nearly instant sexual connection between them, particularly the power exchange dynamic that takes over from their very first encounter. However, I can attest to the fact that this sort of sudden, overwhelming interlock of fantasies and desires really does occur. It happened to me.

Maybe that’s why I liked Coaching Rayna so much: it woke echoes of my own initiation into dominance and submission.

Unfortunately, this novel did not receive the level of editing that it deserves. I was distracted by errors in word usage and grammar. Some of the dialogue felt stilted, and some of the sentences were awkward and overly long. I’m probably over-sensitive to this sort of issue because of my own work as an editor, but these problems did reduce my enjoyment a bit. I hope that for her next book, Ms. Lacasse finds more competent editing help.

Given my experience with this novel, I’m looking forward to that next title.

About Breanna Hayse

BDSM/AP lifestyler Breanna Hayse strives to give her readers truth and reality of the BDSM/Age-Play/Total Power and Erotic Exchange lifestyle.
A native Californian gone 'wild', Bree was gifted with the opportunity to travel the globe and discover the world through the eyes of both a Marine Intelligence specialist and a BDSM lifestyler. This experience has allowed her to gain unique inspiration for her books and provide realistic plots and relatable characters.

She left the service to go into hospice nursing and grief counseling, eventually working as a marriage and family therapist for those involved in alternative lifestyle development. In 2004, Bree and John joined forces to work with both submissives and dominants- teaching, training, listening and loving. Their goal: take the mystery and fear out of the lifestyle and mentor people in safe, consensual and exciting relationships.

Her first book, Game Plan was published in 2012 and opened the door to the world of Contemporary/Realistic Age-Play literature. Since that time, she had published over 60 titles and devotes herself to her work as a pediatric hospice nurse, community involvement, and private and group pro bono counseling in deviant behavior, alternative lifestyle, and addiction recovery with the VA.

Bree is a full switch (acting in both an active, dominant and submissive role) and her scenarios are pulled primarily from either personal experience or observation. Her multi-faceted background allows her to glean from many avenues and provide a unique and intelligent literary experience through elements of fantasy and fiction. She also addresses the questions and psychology of the lifestyle in a manner that is fun and informative, and based on 'the real deal'.

She lives with her husband, musician, and author John Hayse, and two border collies in southern California. Bree and John practice a 24/7 D&S relationship with speckles of AP and happily spend every moment together that they can. Her hobbies include her puppies, hiding her vanilla salt-water taffy where John can't find it, exotic art, collecting inspiration trinkets, and developing her own paddle line. You can also see her as a featured author/instructor in professional conference settings.

Review Tuesday: Sexual Outsiders by David Ortmann and Richard Sprott

Sexual Outsiders: Understanding BDSM Communities and Sexualities
By David M. Ortmann and Richard A. Sprott
Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc., 2013

Including notes, bibliography and index, Sexual Outsiders is nearly two hundred pages long, but it has a simple message: sexual practices involving bondage, discipline, dominance and submission are no less “normal” than any other sort of sexual activity. BDSM is just one galaxy in the vast universe of desire, and kinky relationships can be as healthy and fulfilling (or as unhealthy and destructive) as any vanilla connection.

As a sometime practitioner and long-time fantasist in the BDSM realm, I take this thesis for granted. This book makes it very clear that not everyone feels the same. Ortmann and Sprott share devastating stories about individuals who are been stigmatized, even persecuted, for their sexual proclivities. The authors also consider how stigma develops, and suggest that passion with which some anti-sex or anti-kink crusaders attack “deviance” stems from discomfort with their own sexuality. This is a crucial insight.

I enjoyed reading Sexual Outsidersit’s always pleasant to have one’s own opinions confirmedbut I found myself wondering about the intended audience. I doubt the book is really targeted toward readers like me, people who have an interest in and some knowledge of kink. The volume spends several chapters discussing various aspects of BDSM practice (Safe/Sane/Consensual, Risk Aware Consensual Kink, negotiation and limits, safewords, after care, etc.) as well as describing a range of specific BDSM activities. Most of these concepts and categories were already familiar to me (though I’d never heard the term “raunch”, which is apparently used to describe scenes involving bodily waste), and I suspect this would be true of anyone with a personal interest in BDSM. On the other hand, Chapter 7, which focuses on the difficulties a kink-identified person may have finding a psychotherapist, would be most relevant to individuals involved with BDSM.

It occurred to me that Ortmann and Sprott might be writing primarily for fellow clinicians (Ortmann is a psychotherapist and Sprott a research psychologist), but despite some sections citing the literature, Sexual Outsiders is too intimate to be scholarly work, and also too shallow in its treatment of theoretical issues and prior research.

Perhaps the authors intend this book to be read mostly by lay individuals who do not identify as kinky, to help them understand the nature and the fundamental normality of BDSM. Readers in that category, though, are likely to be find some of the first person stories in Sexual Outsiders a bit hard to handle (be “squicked”, in BDSM parlance). (In contrast, I found them quite arousing in many cases.)

So I’m somewhat confused about who these authors want to reach with this book. The organization of the volume confused me also. The early chapter names imply an arc from introducing terms (“The Power of Language”), through early experiences in BDSM (“The Curious Novice”), to the point where the kinky person actively claims his or her desires (“Coming Out”). However, then the book shifts gears, discussing, through case studies, both the positive (“Stories of Growth and Healing”) and negative (“When Things Go Wrong”) emotional impacts of BDSM on relationships and personal fulfillment. I really liked these chapters, but they didn’t seem to flow from the earlier sections. The book shifts again in the chapter “Power Is Hot”, as the authors try to explain—with extended and explicit excerpts from clinical interviews— the erotic dynamics of different BDSM rituals, roles and activities. I found this chapter one of the most original and intriguing in the volume. Ortmann and Sprott deconstruct the appeal of being flogged, for example, both precisely and intuitively. The next chapter veers away from this intimacy to discuss the issues kinky individuals face when they try to get psychotherapeutic help. This chapter includes a simulated session with the therapist from hell, which is highly effective in dramatizing the authors’ point.

Overall, the book left me with a recollection of brilliant flashes as opposed to a coherent unity.

A strong point in Sexual Outsiders is its emphasis on BDSM community and culture. Ortmann and Sprott even suggest that some discussion of BDSM should be incorporated into clinicians’ training about cultural diversity and cultural sensitivity. Of course, other cultures and communities interweave with the kink world. One of the most fascinating anecdotes involves a Master/slave pair at a large kink festival, where the Master was white and the slave was black. Other (kinky) attendees objected to the apparently racist elements in this relationship, even though it was clearly consensual.

Overall, Sexual Outsiders offers information, insights and support to both BDSM practitioners and vanilla on-lookers who want to understand what’s going on in the dungeons and at the play parties. The somewhat fragmented presentation reduces the overall impact of the book, but it still has much to offer.

In particular, it occurs to me that some authors of BDSM erotic romance might benefit from reading Sexual Outsiders. Even before Fifty Shades, BDSM was a popular sub-genre in erotic romance, but many authors have little or no understanding of the emotional dynamics involved in power exchange. They focus on BDSM as a path to sexual arousal and satisfaction, without realizing the critical importance of the non-physical aspects. Ortmann’s and Sprott’s volume provides both practical information on the nuts and bolts of BDSM and an eloquent explication of its intensity and beauty. I’d like to read more erotic fiction that reflects these truths.
