Review Tuesday: Phoenix and Dragon by Suz de Mello -- #eroticromance #multicultural #ReviewTuesday

Phoenix and Dragon cover

Phoenix and Dragon by Suz de Mello
Dunster Way Books, 2017

San Francisco Police detective Eliza Bowen is a tough gal. Raised by her black mom after being abandoned by her white father, she belonged to a street gang before she went straight. First in the Vice Squad, now in the Major Crimes Unit, she’s known as a hard-working, even driven, officer who doesn’t quit until she sees the perps get what they deserve.

Her current case has her stumped, though. A young paralegal has disappeared without a trace. There’s no sign of a struggle, no clues at all, until Liza unearths a secret diary kept by the victim, Sindie Keller. The sexually explicit journal reveals that on the night she vanished, Sindie’s boss, with whom she was having a kinky affair, sent her to a particular bar dressed in red leather, carrying a copy of The Story of O. Liza decides to mimic the vic’s actions, figuring whoever picked up the victim might try the same trick with her.

Sure enough, a man appears, binds her, and whisks her away in a fancy sports-car. Liza is disturbed to find that her captor is James Li, notorious owner of several brothels around the city. When she was in Vice, she’d tried to bring him down, but had never been able to make any charges stick. His infuriating ability to get away with his crimes is only part of what disturbs her, though. Li is charming, intelligent and breathtakingly good looking. Liza knows he should be off-limits for a cop like her, but it’s difficult to resist temptation. When he takes charge, demanding her total obedience for a weekend in return for the full truth about Sindie, it’s not just professional interest that makes her consent.

James “makes” Liza into his slave. He shares her with other men. He dresses her in shamefully revealing clothing and parades her around his fancy whorehouses. He teases her mercilessly and punishes her when she fails to follow his orders. Most of all, he uses her sexually, in every way imaginable. Liza finds the experience of submission simultaneously thrilling and horrifying, give how it challenges her self-image as a tough and independent woman. Still, there’s something about James that satisfies her, in ways no previous lover has ever been able to do.

Phoenix and Dragon is subtitled “Romantic Suspense”, but there’s a lot more romance than suspense in this novel. The setup with the missing paralegal provides a mechanism to get Liza and James together. From that point on, the book focuses entirely on their interaction, their sexual games, and their growing relationship. The end of the book ties up the loose threads regarding the Sindie Keller case, but this feels like an after-thought.

Not that this is necessarily a complaint. Phoenix and Dragon is erotic romance with an emphasis on erotic. The sex scenes (of which there are many) are well-written, varied and intense. As a dominant, James is both creative and considerate. As a lover, he’s astoundingly virile and predictably enormous. Liza meets him halfway, rising to his every challenge, discovering the paradoxical strength to be found in submission. As the story unfolds, she learns that he’s not the manipulative, exploitative villain she had believed, but a self-made entrepreneur with strong family ties, who has wanted her for a long time.

Some of the Amazon reviews of this book warn that the sex might be too extreme for some readers. I presume they’re referring to the BDSM content in some of the scenes. One review referred to “disturbing elements”, another to “dark themes”. I found this surprising because I actually felt that Ms. de Mello too often pulled her punches with regard to the kink. Li isn’t a true Dom, just a rich, good-looking guy who’s used to getting what he wants. When the novel takes his point of view, he’s clear on the fact that he really doesn’t feel all that comfortable inflicting pain on his partner. He enjoys having Liza in his power, sexually, but to be honest, the psychological dynamic is a far cry from serious BDSM.

My other (relatively minor) complaint about this book was that it was all too easy. There aren’t any obstacles to Liza and James falling in love. Indeed, it feels inevitable. Hence, there’s no real conflict to be resolved.

It’s still satisfying to see Liza lowering her guard and letting James into her heart. That is, after all, what romance is about.

If you’re looking for an appealing heroine and a seductive hero, who share amazing sexual chemistry, you can’t go wrong with Phoenix and Dragon. Just don’t expect a taut thriller or push-your-limits, make-you-squirm kink.

A First Foray in Memoir - Perilous Play: The Real Fifty Shades

By Suz deMello (Guest Blogger)

The cover of Perilous Play states: based on a true story. The fact is, very little in this memoir is fiction.

Places and names have been changed. The time in my life when these events occurred is altered. One scene was added, to wrap up the story and tie it in a tidy bow.

But otherwise, it’s all true.

I had to change names, dates and places because of a commitment I had made to a man I call “Trapper Hart” in the book. He’s quite well-known in his portion of our world, so it took quite a bit of fancy footwork to revise the facts to me truthful enough, but not too truthful.

This was a new experience for me as a writer. Either I’m absolutely truthful, as in a blog about an event, or totally fictitious, like the vast majority of my novels and stories. I don’t generally write many drafts—I edit as I go—but Perilous Play was unusual. I needed about four drafts before I hit on the right formula that would allow me to tell the truth of my experience while keeping my word not to “out” my former Dom.

Heres what the book is about:

One woman’s journey into the contemporary kink underworld, Perilous Play is Suz deMello’s explosive personal account of her experiences with BDSM. Engaging and honest, this groundbreaking memoir will grab you and never let you go.

Heres an excerpt of the only fictional eventa ménage with two men I did have relationships with. Alas, never got that ménage experience Ive craved for so long! But its a hot scene and I hope you enjoy it.

I drove to Lafayette feeling hot and ready. I thought I’d be able to persuade Mark to allow me to top him again, which really excited me. That emotion quickly changed to deliciously terrified seconds after I rang his doorbell.

Because Tobias opened the door.

Mark stood behind him, arms folded over his torso. Both looked grim, which surprised me. Wasn’t Mark’s birthday a joyous occasion? Squelching nerves, I entered, handed Mark his gift and hugged him. “Happy birthday, sweetie.”

Sweetie,” he said, contempt infusing his voice. “Is that right?”

Well, yeah, honey, of course.” I still had no idea what was going on. Tobias had stated quite firmly when we’d met that he wasn’t interested in a threesome with another man, so why was he here? He certainly didn’t look as though he was in a celebratory mood. Though mystified, I had no course of action other than to wait until the men told me what was up.

I set down my toy bag and handed Mark his gift. Without opening it, he tossed it onto the kitchen counter, reached into his pocket and took out his cell phone. So did Tobias. After brief finger-tapping, they held out the phones so I could read the screens. On each, I saw:

Good morning and Happy Thanksgiving! I hope today is everything you want it to be, sweetie!

I was fucked. Or going to be fucked. “Uh, guys,” I started, backing away and holding out my hands in entreaty. “Uh, I know this looks bad, but—“

Tobias reached around me and shoved the door closed so hard it slammed. His other arm caged me between his solid body and the door.

I wasn’t going anywhere Tobias didn’t want me to go.

I stared into his dark eyes, trying to read his expression, divine his thoughts. The only conclusion that I could reasonably reach is that I had insulted my Dom.

You know what you’ve done,” he said.

I nodded.

You know it wasn’t appropriate.” His mouth twitched and I realized he was trying not to grin.

I nodded again, squelching my answering smile, playing the game. Why not? It was fun.

His eyes twinkled. “You’ve been a very, very bad girl.” He ran a finger along my jawline.

Shivering, I closed my eyes, allowing myself to get into role, immerse myself in the scene. Was I safe?

Oh, yes. I’d been with both men before. They knew my limits and were entirely trustworthy.

Do you accept your punishment?”

Excitement zipped through me as though I’d dared to touch a live Taser. “Yes, sir,” I said sweetly, batting my eyelashes.

I peeked around Tobias. Though our relationship was more equal—in fact, Mark enjoyed me topping him—he didn’t look pleased. He picked up a couple of dark-gray objects that lay on his kitchen counter.

They clanked.

Shackles.

About Writing: Your Essential Writing Manual

By Suz DeMello (Guest Blogger)

About writing ABOUT WRITING

Why yet another writing manual? Hasnt this ground been covered before, by far more able authors, such as Rita Mae Brown and Stephen King?

Well, yes, but...

Hmm.

Yes, I do quote the above authors liberally in my short little book. But I do add material they don’t have.

Oh yeah? Like what?

There’s some cool stuff on the mythic structure...

Mythic, schmythic. Joseph Campbell and Chris Vogler dealt with all of that stuff.

Yeah, but I offer something slightly different. Read this:

Legacy from the Distant Past

I wrote earlier that this story is hardwired into our consciousness, our bodies, our very cells. Why?

Picture this:

We are asleep in a cave or a den, curled up with our mates, our brothers, our sisters. This is our ordinary world.

Dawn comes, sliding sly fingers into the darkness. We awaken. Hunger and thirst are our call to adventure. Is there a refusal of the call to join the hunt? Perhaps from some pack members—the old, the very young, nursing mothers.

But others are insistent, approaching the alpha of the pack—the mentor—with a demand for food. Those who answer the call leave the safety of the cave—crossing the threshold.

The alpha selects our best fighters, finding allies while rejecting enemies who might take an opportunity to betray him during the excitement—the test—of the hunt.

We form a hunting party and set forth, seeking prey. But our targets are wily and fast. Some may take refuge in a different cave, behind a waterfall, or in a swamp.

Nevertheless, the alpha leads us to the danger, for the pack must eat. This stage of the hunt corresponds to Campbell’s approach to the innermost cave.

We find another dire wolf trying to kill a great beast, perhaps a mastodon. Even the combined efforts of the pack with our new ally aren’t equal to taking the mastodon, which tramples off, dripping blood from wounds we have inflicted. However, we have gained a powerful new hunter. These events are the ordeal and the reward...

Writing Kinky Toes

By Suz deMello (Guest Blogger)

This short story was the first I wrote about a form of sexual desire in which I have no interest whatsoever. Okay, I like a pair of pretty shoes as much as the next girl, but Im not sexually aroused by feet or footwear. The first time a man sucked my toes was after a hot and sweaty bike ride, and candidly, I thought the experience a little disgusting. Not for meI wasnt doing the suckingbut for the guy. Nevertheless, he seemed to really enjoy it, despite the unsanitary nature of the activity. (He was a doctor, too, which made what he did even more puzzling).

But each to his own, I say, and if someone indulges a fetish and doesnt hurt anyone else (except with consent, of course) who am I to judge?

I wrote Kinky Toes during a time when I was exploring ways to keep the writing fresh by focusing on fetishes I hadnt previously written about. Queens Quest (http://www.ellorascave.com/queen-s-quest.html) is another story from that period, and it posits a society in which exhibitionism is rampant and public sex perfectly acceptablethe conformation of the futuristic planet I invented is such that birthrates are low, and anything to get new births is encouraged.

Im neither an exhibitionist nor a foot fetishist, so both stories were a departure for me. I didnt know anything about foot or shoe fetishes, so I had to research both subjects. Kinky Toes is the result.

Here’s what it’s about:
Genre: contemporary erotic romance
Shelbie Nathanson resents Rick Saldano's ascension to C.O.O. of her family's shoe company, a job she's wanted all her life. But she can't resist his red-hot, sexy style of lovemaking... one that focuses on her passion: shoes.
Here’s a snippet to sharpen your interest:

In the cab, Shelbie became even more aware of Rick, if that were possible. He was big. Not fat, but solid, sizable, with broad shoulders and an obviously muscular body beneath his suit. She couldn’t help sneaking a peek at his crotch. The suit’s fabric had pulled tight as he sat, tight enough that she could guess that six-foot-two Rick’s body parts were proportional.

Her mood had definitely changed.

He leaned closer, hesitated the tiniest fraction of a second before he brushed his lips against her cheek. Shocked, she jerked away, but he didn’t move, his gaze still pinned to hers.

She didn’t move either. The air felt thick, as though the very atmosphere were holding her in place. They sat staring at each other until the cabbie harrumphed. “Where to, folks?”

After giving the cabbie an address she didn’t recognize, Rick didn’t say anything during the cab ride. Rigid with a tension she couldn’t define, Shelbie didn’t have a word to say either, not even when he picked up one of her feet and rested it in his lap, atop his very substantial hard-on. She wiggled her foot and the stiletto heel slid across the bulge in his pants.

He sighed, so she did it again. Then again. He clamped his lips tight shut, apparently stifling a groan as his erection swelled even more.

He slid one finger along the exposed arch of her foot. It didn’t feel ticklish, exactly, but was tingly, the kind of tingle her pussy liked.

He inserted his finger into her toe cleavage. The spot between the big toe and the next was tiny, smaller than his index finger. His abrupt thrust hurt a little, and Shelbie had a mad vision of the time when she’d lost her virginity. Her pussy had been too small for the tool her then-boyfriend had wielded.

She had that same feeling now, an ache as something big intruded into her body’s smaller space. She tried to pull away but he persisted, twisting his finger until he’d pushed in as far as her shoe would allow.

He sawed his finger in and out and she bit down on her lower lip to avoid moaning aloud. She flung her head back, panting as he rotated his finger.

They arrived outside a row of brownstones near the park. He slipped his finger out of her toe cleavage and gave her foot a squeeze. An awkwardness she hadn’t felt since teenage sex overcame her as she dropped her feet to the cab’s floor. Rick paid the fare, ushered her out of the taxi and into the building…his building, she supposed.

The moment they were alone in the elevator, she sprang at him and pressed her lips against his. He wrapped his arms around her and held her tight as his tongue invaded her mouth. She sucked at him hard, shoving her hands into his hair. He tasted and felt divine.
Her body was aflame, all light and heat, and he picked her up as though she were made of insubstantial fire, weighing nothing...
