I just need you to surround the building and make sure all of Malleus goes where they’re told.”

Ground rules?”

None.”

He sneered, the happy kind. I’d just told him he could beat the shit out of any of them if he wanted.

I waved one of the guys in the back to come forward. He was a local small-time con artist, extremely personable when he wanted to be. He came up to me. His smile looked like Prince Charming.

There are a few people living in the building who are not connected to Malleus. I want you to mark their door so El Parros doesn’t mess with them. And inform them that most of their neighbors are being evicted and to please stay inside and lock their doors.” I gave him a sheet of labels on which I’d written “PROTECTED.”

Still smiling that smile, he took the labels and the list of apartment numbers and headed inside.

I sent the thugs to surround the building, and once Prince Charming came out, I sent in El Parros to start evicting.

Only a few minutes later, they started streaming out like cockroaches. The first one out the door bolted for the fence at the back of the apartment building, and then he stumbled forward and fell face first into a dirty patch of grass. No one seemed to have noticed where Vincent had gone, the third-story laundry room window of the neighboring building. The rounds in the rifle were just rubber; they wouldn’t kill anyone, but the gun packed enough force to knock a man down and the rounds hurt like a motherfucker.

The next man out tried to run as well, until a rubber bullet made him smack into the side of the building.

Over there!” Vlad commanded and pointed to the middle of the road, and the rest of the cockroaches followed as ordered.

Carlos came out of the building and across the street to me. “That’s all of them, bitches, too.”

Did you come across any children?”

No kids. Just a few crying in the protected apartments.”

I glanced around to be certain Garrison still had the local uniforms busy elsewhere and then walked over to where Malleus was gathered in the middle of the street. They were closely surrounded by El Parros and the others.

Everyone focused on me as I stood in front of them.

I addressed Malleus. “You’re leaving town. Now.”

Right,” a guy with red, spiked hair scoffed.

I nodded slightly toward him, and a rubber bullet made red-spikes smack into the asphalt.

I suggest the rest of you look around,” I said. “Anything seem unusual about your company?”

They glanced around at their herders—sneak thieves, con artists, drug dealers, enforcers, and El Parros. Several of them raised their eyebrows. This group didn’t usually associate in general, let alone work together on a job. “Any idea what would bring such a group into this unlikely alliance?”

A young man in a dirty white T-shirt raised his hand.

I managed not to roll my eyes and just looked at him.

You, Mr. Kaden.”

Very good. You get a gold star.” I started walking casually around the group. “How many of you are from this city?”

Several of them slowly raised their hands.

Then you’ll know quite clearly what happens when you cross a Kaden. Anyone care to explain to the class?”

We ain’t never crossed you,” dirty-white-T-shirt said.

I gave a slight nod, and a well-placed round hit him in the thigh and knocked his leg out from under him. He yelled out in pain.

I squatted next to him and spoke calmly. “I suggest you shut the fuck up before I make you bleed.”

He pressed his lips together, and pain etched itself in his face as if chiseling rock.

I stood and continued slowly circling the group. “You will leave town. Tonight. You will not return. You will not maintain any relationships with anyone in this city. You will not even discuss this city. I have informed all of my contacts that you are not welcome here, and they are to demonstrate that if they see you.” I stopped walking and faced them squarely. “I have authorized them to use whatever means of demonstration they find most effective.”

Vlad, El Parros, and most of the others sneered.

I started walking away, toward my car. “I’m giving you five minutes’ head start before my contacts begin demonstrating.”

Running footsteps sounded from behind me. They yelled at each other to get out of the way. My enforcers laughed as they watched.

Excerpt

Sometime in the night, I pulled up to the hotel, and made it inside and up to my floor. Thankfully, inside the hotel was quiet. Most of the other guests were asleep. I couldn’t fathom sleep.

I opened the door to my room.

I was starting to worry.” Joe was sitting on the sofa at the far side of the room.

Quickly, I closed the door. The last thing I needed was for the press to find out I had a man in my room.

Not to worry,” he said. “No one knows I’m here.”

How’d you get in my room?”

He smiled and raised an eyebrow.

Right,” I said. “Leader of probably the best ring of thieves in history. Almost forgot.”

Acting leader, not rightful leader.”

I took off my coat, dumped my bag on the desk, and then plopped down in the armchair next to the sofa. “What can I do for you?” I asked.

First, I wondered if I might ask a rather personal question.”

About Alec and me.”

That, I was working under the assumption is a hoax.”

Your assumption is correct.” I didn’t bother asking how he knew or requesting that he keep the secret. If anyone knew how to keep secrets, it was Joe.

His chubby cheeks rose a bit as he smiled. “Good.”

If that wasn’t the personal question,” I said, “what is?”

I was wondering how well you knew your mother.”

That certainly wasn’t what I’d expected. “Uh, well, I was really young when she died. I guess there are some things I only know because my dad told me.”

May I ask what you do remember?”

I hesitated. But then I decided to answer; he’d earned some trust. “I remember she always made me feel like my dad and I were the center of her life. And her painting.”

She didn’t have any other interests?”

Nothing more significant than keeping a clean house.”

No close friends?”

I assume so, but I don’t remember.” Then I added, “Why all this interest in my mother?” First the painting, and now this.

He slid forward in his seat. “I must confess I haven’t been entirely forthcoming with you.”

I figured as much.”

He raised an eyebrow.

I waited for him to go on.

I think I know why you’ve never met any family from her side.”

She was an only child, and her parents are gone.”

He tilted his head and nodded. “That’s not untrue.”

What do you mean that’s not untrue? What’re you talking about?”

I think she refrained from lying to you as much as possible, but she did hide things. I assume she intended to tell you more once you were older. I am certain your father knew everything, at least mostly.”

What in the world are you talking about?”

Cookies and a Tasty Leading Man (#recipe #Christmas #forbiddenlove)

By M.S. Kaye (Guest Blogger)
What better way to enjoy Christmas than some delicious cookies? I’m rather picky about my cookies; of course, anything with sugar is probably good, but I like soft cookies much more than crispy and dry. This recipe delivers. I hope you enjoy!
Ingredients

1 cup butter
1½ cup packed brown sugar
(no white sugar, brown sugar only—that’s the secret)
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla
2½ cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
1 bag desired chips
Drop onto a cookie sheet and bake for 6-8 minutes at 400°.
Now for a great book to read while you eat these tasty cookies! Once & Forever is the 3rd book in my Once series, but each of them is a standalone read.

As Eden and Trace confess their pasts to each other and grow closer, will they be able to resist getting too close?

Once & Again
Book 2

Then one day she shows up for a pre-marital counselling session with her fiancé, Davis. Aiden soon realizes Davis isn’t who he says he is, but what does that mean for Maylynn, and for himself?

Excerpt Book 3:

You know what he did to git sent to prison?” one of the convenience store clerks murmured to the other.

Trace could just hear them over the horrible rendition of “Jingle Bells” playin’ through the speakers. He ignored them, like he always did. He tried to come into town late in the evening to avoid people as much as possible, but that also meant it was quiet enough that he could often hear what people murmured about him. Once he’d grabbed some protein bars and a can of beer, he headed up to the counter to pay.

The clerk with a buzz-cut told him the total, and Trace handed him some cash.

Neither of the clerks made eye contact with him, but they both hovered over the cash register as if he might snatch it and run.

Buzz-cut closed the cash drawer right quick and handed Trace’s change back.

Thank you.” Trace stuffed the change in his pocket, took the bag of protein bars in one hand and his beer in the other, and walked out of the store.

He headed for the back lot toward the alley. He could get through most of downtown by way of the alley. This late at night it was almost too dark to see where he was goin’, but that was part of what he liked about it.

Bitch,” someone growled. And then the sound of something—or someone—smacking into the brick wall of the back of the convenience store.

Trace moved more quickly and turned the corner, and he caught sight of a skinny, young woman punching a man in the face. His head snapped back. But then another man slammed his fist across her jaw. She looked so frail that the punch seemed like shooting a cannon ball at a piece of notebook paper.

Hey!” Trace roared and ran at them. “Git away from her.”

This is just the beginning of his discovery of who—what—he truly is.

Release date 10/15/16 from Inkspell Publishing.

Add to your to your to-read on Goodreads.

Strong as Death, Born From Death book 1

Ilona discovers what it means to have a mother who is a modern woman and a father who is a 19th-century gentleman ghost.

After being hit by a car and taken to the hospital, Ilona starts to realize she’s different from other people, and that her mother has hidden the truth from her. She sneaks out of the hospital in order to discover the truth.

A mysterious boy named Archer guides her through Brooklyn and introduces her to Hendrick, the man who claims to be her father—though he died in 1890.

Ilona must discover not only what she must do to rid the city of Soll, a sadistic and powerful spirit, but also what it means to be half ghost. She proves what her mother told her—love is stronger than death.

Sneak Peek at Awaken from Death:

The blond boy didn’t walk up to a urinal or into one of the stalls, or even up to the mirror. He stood in the middle of the room.

Invisible, Lettie watched curiously.

Something moved backward away from him. Out of him.

She recognized Archer’s shiny black hair and strong frame even before she could see his face.

She gasped. But ghosts can’t inhabit people.

The blond boy shook his head and looked around. “Fuck.”

I’m sorry,” Archer murmured so the boy wouldn’t hear.

Lettie stared at both of them.

The blond boy turned, leaned his hands on the counter, and looked at himself in the mirror…not the way people usually looked at themselves. It was more like he was trying to see something more than was in the reflection.

Archer watched him, as if waiting for him to see something.

Then Lettie understood. Archer hadn’t merely inhabited the boy—he’d possessed him. But there were only a couple ways that’d be possible—if he were half ghost, or if he…

A memory struck Lettie like a horse galloping across a battlefield. An ancient memory. Lettie had been around since the beginning of time on Earth, but most of those thousands of years she let slink around the crevices of her mind. It was mostly just walking the bridge with the newly deceased. There were a few memories, though, that burned into her every time she let herself pull them forward. And burned was precisely the right word.

She knew—or rather, remembered—why Archer would never leave Ilona.

The first step toward being published (#guestblog #pnr #ghost @mskosciuszko)

By M.S. Kaye (Guest Blogger)

Hi, Lisabet. Thanks for hosting me today!

The first step to being published is learning how to write WELL. Educate yourself! You may have an amazing story, but can you convey it as vividly as it is in your mind? Here are some of my favorite books on craft and other aspects of the writing world (I suggest reading these books in the order provided):

  1. The Elements of Style by Strunk and White. This is a skinny and fabulous book. Start here; this book will give you the building blocks of writing well.
  2. Self-Editing for Fiction Writers by Browne and King. The basics but more in-depth. Great chapter on sophistication.
  3. Word Painting by Rebecca McClanahan. Create images in your readers’ minds as vividly as Van Gogh created with paint.
  4. Stein on Writing by Sol Stein. Craft, more than just the basics.
  5. Spunk and Bite by Arthur Plotnik. Read the others first so you understand the rules well enough to be able to break them.
  6. 77 Reasons Why Your Book was Rejected by Mike Nappa. Get insights into the publishing world from someone who’s been in virtually every role.

Do you have any favorite writing books to add to the list?

Here’s a little information on my most recent book:

Awaken from Death, Born From Death book 2

Will be released 10/15/16 from Inkspell Publishing.
The truth of an ancient connection threatens to destroy Ilona and Archer. As they struggle to understand, Lettie discovers, or rather remembers, their history, as well as the punishment Archer bore as a result. She comes to accept Archer will never leave Ilona, but will that cause his destruction?

Excerpt from Book 1:

Another twenty yards and she’d be out of the darkness of the trees and almost to the sidewalk, within reach of the light from the streetlamps.

A figure stepped out from behind a large oak, directly into Ilona’s path.

Ilona stopped and searched for a way around.

What are you doing?” a rough voice growled.

Ilona recognized it immediately, even before she registered Archer’s face.

It’s none of your business what I’m doing,” she said.

He moved closer. “You’re making it goddamned impossible to protect you.”

You can’t protect me.”

His jaw tightened, and he glared. “What in the hell do you think I’ve been doing?”

I’m honestly not sure.”

His voice rose. “You’d be lying frozen dead in a gutter right now if it wasn’t for me. You saw what happened in the shelter—you’d have been attacked by now if I hadn’t been around.”

Her tone was quiet, calm. “I know how you scared them away.”

I told you I have a talent for creating fear. It comes in useful.”

But you don’t like it.”

He said nothing.

And I know you’ve been around,” she said.

He raised his eyebrows as if she was being slow.

Before you asked me if I was lost,” she said. “You were there—when the car hit me.”

His expression sobered.

She waited for a response.

Finally, he said, “I’ve been around.”

Will you answer one question? And be honest?”

I give as much honesty as I can.”

Her lips curved a little. That was perhaps the most honest response he had yet given.

She moved closer, and he backed away.

No,” she said.

He stopped.

When you turned the corner and asked if I was lost,” she said, “you leaned your shoulder on the wall. How did you do that?”

His eyebrows pulled together.

You’re really good at it,” she said. “It took me awhile to realize you never actually touch anything, that you stay out of the light, that you don’t get cold, your breath doesn’t come out in puffs in the cold like everyone else’s, you never let anyone close, near enough to realize you have no scent, to feel the static when you get too close.”

He took a step back, as if in self-defense.

Don’t try to lie anymore,” she said. “I know what you are.”
