:Ladies around the world, across the years - #Romance #DevelopingCountries #Women @AdamMannAuthor

Sinagiri cover

By Mike Lord (Guest Blogger)

When I started to work in Pakistan, in the Swat valley, I was a bit dismayed that ladies were never seen, and were not to be seen. I mean that, even if we saw one by accident we had to physically turn our heads the other way! It is called “Purdah”.

Over three years I did meet a few women, very few, like the wives of several colleagues, two heavily veiled graduate students from Peshawar, and two Belgian tourists wearing boiler suits who came our way by accident. Bhakti, my driver, saw them first and invited them to “his” camp thinking they were two male hitchhikers.

I generously offered them a bathroom, and then they emerged they turned out to be ladies, with very short hair, who had disguised themselves as men. They stayed two days and then set off for Mingora, where Malala came from several years later.

That was a total of six females over three years!

My next posting was in Sri Lanka, with hundreds of beautiful ladies, two girls in my office operating word processors, several ladies as heads of departments, and several working in other government departments. But all untouchable to me.

But wait. I did meet a lady in Colombo who invited me to her brother’s house for dinner! Within ten minutes there was an electric power cut, and we all sat around a table with two candles – romantic? The timing was all wrong.

Then I went to Singiriya, near Anuradhapura, and in the early morning climbed the steel staircase to the Hall of Mirrors where about twenty frescoes remained from probably the several hundred painted on the walls of the cave about fifteen hundred years ago. No one knows who they were.

None of the ladies wore much clothing, as may have been the custom at that time, and they obviously came from different parts of the world.

I started to read the local history, and began to surmise that these ladies might have been ladies of the court. None of their names were recorded so I started to give them imaginary names, and places of origin.

The Rajah, we know was called Kasyapu, and he lived in the castle that he was building on the isolated rock nowadays called Singiriya. Rajah Kasyapu had, history related, four wives and many concubines. History related that in his rock top castle he was living a life of a recluse which means withdrawal from physical delights, in order words no sex.

I lived in Sri Lanka for three years and started to write my first novel. There was a lot of history recorded, and fortunately in English, and I used the names of the men and the imaginary names of the ladies in the Rajah’s court.

I did then sit down and write, but not publish, my first historical novel “Sinagiri”. It means Sina – a lion and Giri – a rock.

One day my boss in England rang me and asked if I’d like to work in a developing economy, which I thought I had been doing.

But he wanted me to go and work in Vietnam.

What a change! A different climate; different people; attractive ladies; no or very little traffic, in those days. That was February in 1997.

The traditional dress of the local ladies in Vietnam is the au dai which is designed to show the physical outline of their body, and has a high collar originally designed to stop the wearer looking around! Many offices and restaurants dress their female staff in these lovely garments.

But my mind was working overtime! I was slowly piecing together the history of the country in which I was working, and the methods used to propagate especially by the ruling families!

Often we know who married who, and history usually records the names of their sons and successors, and occasionally some of their daughters. But history doesn’t recall how they did that!

The first romantic novel I wrote is called Hanoi Heat about a girl who works in a model agency, who claims to have a French father, and a visiting European man. Their romance starts slowly, but then takes off like a bullet!

This prompted me write about a local princess who lived in the late eighteenth century. Her name was Le Thi Ngoc Han, and she was given in marriage at the age of sixteen to a military hero called Nguyen Hue, who later became Emperor Quang Trung. The trouble was that she fell in love with her husband, and then success became tragedy as they both died at an early age.

Mike Lord has worked for over 50 years in what is called “developing economies”. Most of the time Mike’s work has been with the thousands of small scale farmers in remote areas, who have appreciated the benefits of sustainable livelihoods, so that they now have enough food to feed themselves, and also some to sell so that they have a cash income. That is why most of Mike’s novels are set in these countries and especially the remote locations.

Four years ago Mike finally retired and started writing, and has now produced 33 fantasy romance books ten of which have been published, and 23 self-published at Smashwords and Amazon KDP. Adam Mann is a pen name for Mike Lord.

From Coconuts to Confessions - #Contest #SriLanka #Vietnam @AdamMannAuthor

Love in the Rain

By Adam Mann (Guest Blogger)

About twenty years ago I was just finishing working on a project in Sri Lanka when I came across a book in Colombo entitled “an historical relation of CEYLON” which had been written and published in 1680. I’m not a historian, but the title intrigued me and led me to find out about the history of that area, and I also had the time and facility to visit some of the places mentioned in that book. It was a bit like surfing the web – one place led to another, and some of the recorded history in that region went back thousands of years!

The descriptions of people at those times – both men and women – began to make me think about their real personal lives. They must have had families! But recorded history is usually very quiet about their wives, concubines and mistresses, or indeed their husbands and lovers.

At that time I was living on the edge of a coconut estate in North West Sri Lanka, just before I moved to a new project here in Vietnam.

What a change!

I was suddenly confronted with hoards of beautiful ladies, who did nothing to hide their shapes and everything to make themselves more attractive, presumably to the opposite sex.

I had started to write novels based on the history I had discovered about the Indian sub-continent, and I was trying to find a traditional publisher, and fortunately managing to avoid the vanity press. So I still had my manuscripts intact.

I read the books again, and began to wonder again about their social and family lives. I also managed to “surf the web” as then the internet was slowly developing, and I found that people were writing about anything!

Now I’d better explain. My parents and their parents weren’t Victorian, but pretty close to it. Sex was a taboo subject. Simply, one didn’t talk about it – although they all must have participated in it or their children, including me, wouldn’t have existed.

This intrigued me and I must confess I wanted to dip my “finger” into the local society with all those lovely ladies, and I wasn’t short of volunteers!

I thought that language would be a problem, but in that climate nobody needed to talk about anything.

I steered away from people in my office, and friend’s offices. I also stayed away from the ‘red light’ areas. I was working in an agricultural area where reproduction is fairly close to the surface, and people are more than happy to talk and joke about it. But I was too busy working to manage to meet any participants for what I had in mind. In fact I was too busy for the next fifteen years before I completed my first manuscript.

I wrote my first adventure novel based on a man meeting several ladies at an embassy reception, which is also a location where ladies dress to kill!

I arranged for my hero in this book to meet his heroine several times socially before either of them decided that closer inspection, with or without clothes, would be a good idea.

Then I found online that several “on line” publishers had emerged, and the electronic novel had been developed – now called an eBook. I needed a front cover and again the web came to my rescue as I managed to buy several pictures of semi-dressed or undressed ladies. I taught myself to add the title of the book and the name of the author to the cover.

I also found several publishers who offered eBooks and printed paperbacks on the market, and they also had art departments who produced much better book covers than me. They also employ a team of the essential editors and proofreaders.

Today, with the New Year upon us I have looked back on my life and productivity over the last twenty two years:

Three murder or mystery novels.

Three historical novels.

Ten novella eBooks from on-line publishers, like eXtasy, Phaze and
Global Publishing and,

Twenty two eBooks that I have self-published using the name Butterfly
Books as I couldn’t wait for the publishers to make a decision.

If you’ve read this far please take a look at some of these books:

From a personal point of view I did mention that I lived and worked in Vietnam, but not in Hanoi. I have always preferred mountains to the coast, and I’m not too far from the highest mountain in Vietnam known as Fansipan, which is 3,143 meters, or 10,312 feet, above sea level, and is a favourite destination for tourists. At this mountainous location the residents are from ethnic minority groups, like Huong or Dao, who actually account for fifteen percent of the total population, but many don’t speak Vietnamese as their family language.

On recent visit to Sa Pa with my wife we stopped at a restaurant in the town for dinner, and I was momentarily delayed in the restaurant paying the bill. When I went outside I saw my wife was buying a locally made memento. The vendor was a local Huong lady wearing her traditional and colourful clothes, and my wife who is from the ethnic majority Kinh, both Vietnamese, but both haggling the price loudly in English!

Excerpt from my latest eBook:

I’m often asked to leave an excerpt from one of my books. I like offering these and the following is extracted from the beginning of one of my latest novellas:

It was very early morning when the flight finally arrived in Taipei, and Charlie walked with Sue-Ling to the Arrivals Hall.

Wait a minute,” she said and disappeared into an airport shop.

Here,” she said a few minutes later, “something from Taiwan so that you remember me!” and she laughed.

He handed him a small locally made toy farmer.

As she was standing close to him he kissed her forehead, and she blushed, but made no effort to move away.

Bathroom,” said Charlie, and Sue-ling took his bag and said, “I’ll wait for you,” which was kind of her.

She watched him walk away, and made a mental note.

Tall, she decided, probably six feet, brown wavy hair, slim build, intelligent and with a lovely smile. She guessed he’d be late thirties.
She knew he wasn’t married as he’d told her during the flight, as she’d told him she was nearly thirty and single, but she had also said there was an old boyfriend waiting for her at home.

Charlie, for his part, thought about this charming and attractive lady he’d met on the flight. She was quite tall compared to other Taiwanese ladies, kept her black hair shoulder length, wore thin gold ring earrings, and was still very slim. But with winter clothes covering her he could not tell anymore. Still she did have a lovely smile with sparkling black eyes.

Sue-ling was waiting for Charlie, and she gave him her bag as she in turn went to the ladies washroom.

Wrong way round,” thought Charlie, “I should have asked her first!”
And he admonished himself, and when she came back she was a bit deep in her own thoughts. They walked on together.

You have to go that way, but I’m going over there,” Sue-ling indicated the overhead signs, “Oh yes, here’s my mobile phone number so if you give me a ring sometime, and then I’ll have your number,” and she handed him a small card.

Good-bye Sue-ling,” said Charlie, “thanks for your time and help on the flight.

Sue-ling smiled and on tip toe kissed Charlie on his right cheek, and she walked away.

Charlie followed the signs leading to the Departure Hall, but was still thinking about her.

He dialed her number in his mobile phone, and it rang;

Is that the attractive lady I met on the flight from Vancouver?” he asked into the phone.

No, sorry, I can’t see her around here,” she replied, “but I’ll give you a call if I do.”

Red High Heels Lead to Red Hot Passion

By Adam Mann (Guest Blogger)

I don’t know about you but I do like ladies with nice legs who wear high heels. They must be very uncomfortable to wear, but I’ve never heard a woman tell me that. As a result of my admiration a lot of my books feature high heels in the plot but they seem to fall off when the heat begins.

Perhaps I should explain: I’m a man who writes romance books. It all started when I was writing my autobiography, and I began to remember all the lovely ladies in my life; my first wife unfortunately died suddenly but as I was working in West Africa at that time the pressure of work, and the presence of a local baby nurse eased our distress.

My next wife I met at a party in England, and I must admit that although our physical life was red hot, living together was not and which was probably aggravated by the children, who were not hers.

I moved from West Africa to Libya and then on to East Africa, and there was no shortage of ladies on the way, and I fell in love with a simply drop dead gorgeous Indian widow, or at least I thought she was a widow until her husband suddenly turned up!

My work moved from Africa to Asia, and looking back now I should have gone straight to Bollywood! I found the Asian ladies marvelous, although sometimes a problem to talk to. The dating system works differently there, unless you move in the irresponsible social circles, which my work prevented me from doing.

I’ve now been married for seventeen years to a lovely Vietnamese former widow who had two girls and a boy, making a “total for us” of seven children and now four grandchildren.

Then about three years ago I began to start writing about some of the lovely ladies that I had met in between my four marriages! This is where the high heels came back into the picture. I began to think of plots or stories, and immediately started to write romance novels; most of the time with a happy ending.

I couldn’t see any point in my hero just giving the girl a kiss and then getting married! Life doesn’t work like that; almost every lady I’ve known has been concerned about their potential love life, in other words sex, if they decided to live with that man! Really not joking; apart from other considerations like income, housing, transport, social life, friends and so on.

This meant that my books had to have sex, and explicit sex, written into the story; and also consideration about birth control and disease prevention, which works both ways. I’ve had battles with editors when my narrative has contained jokes about birth control methods; but these jokes can be real and actually happen in real life. What I have not included is pornography in my sex scenes; sorry but that is another type of book.

The first romance book I wrote was based in West Africa and published by Blushing Books; although they regard it as an anthology – one man five ladies, but only one at a time! See the excerpt below.

In East Africa, Phaze Books became my publisher, and I wrote stories about real individuals and their love life, and sexual activities together.

In Asia, Sri Lanka, eXtasy Books took over the publishing, but the social life there is very different and the story had to be longer in order for my hero and heroine to get into bed together! I lived in Singapore as a boy so I just had to base one story there, and believe you me the ladies there are lovely as well.

I still live in Asia and write romance novels usually based there, but recently I’ve moved some of my story locations to Europe, or even back to the southern parts of Africa. I only write about locations that I know, even though the roads and bridges and buildings change over the years.

If my hero is chasing through the bush to get to the lady the desires then I can’t have him driving with one hand on the wheel as he cruises along. He actually has to navigate his way over dirt roads, with water, mud and potholes along the way, and maybe for hundreds of miles, and avoiding wildlife on the way.

Please enjoy some of these excerpts, and (I hope) the books themselves.

Excerpt from Black High Heels:

I ought to go and leave you to your work,” she said and started to get up to put the tea cups away. As she walked to the door, Bill took her hand and pulled her to him. She did not resist, and they stood face to face. She smiled up and Bill so he kissed her.

She put her arms around his neck and shivered with relief.

I’ve been waiting all day for you do that,” she said, and smiled at him again. They stood for a minute close together looking at one another, and she smiled again.

Bill led her towards the nearest bed, and they both sat down on the edge of the bed together. They were still very close to one another.

Bill could see her cleavage, so he leaned across her and kissed it, and Binh shut her eyes and held his head close to her breasts. He kissed her a bit lower and began to unbutton her shirt to get at her breasts. She was not wearing a bra. So he kissed each breast, and then her nipples and she groaned. She lay back on the bed, pulling him with her.

Excerpt from Helga’s Red Thigh Boots:

I did not see Helga back at the house until the next morning, which was a Saturday, and again I went down to the kitchen, ostensibly for an early morning cup of tea. I had on only my cheap cotton sarong and a collarless shirt that I had brought in India some years ago.

Helga was wearing her housecoat again, with only one or two buttons done up! Underneath I could see that she was wearing something like a flannelette nightgown, and when she turned to give me a mug of tea most of the housecoat opened at the front!

She did look attractive.

It was my penis that gave me away! And she saw the movement in the front of my sarong.

Oops,” she said and smiled.

Down, Fred!” I said, and she laughed.

Why do you call it Fred?”

I laughed myself and said, “Quite frankly I’ve forgotten, but I’m sure I’m not the only man who has a name for his penis!”

She gasped, held her hand to her mouth, and blushed!

You mean women do as well?”

If I tell you, will you promise to keep it to yourself?”

Yes,” I lied, but could not help smiling.

Do you remember Harry Potter?”

I nodded.

Well there was a character called Helga Hufflepuff, which made me laugh and one morning after a shower I was powdering talc on the skin around my pubis, when I dropped the container, and swore “hufflepuff”, and ever since then I’ve called my pubic area hufflepuff!”

We both laughed, and I looked at my sarong, and said,

There you are Fred, a kindred spirit!”

Now I’ve definitely got a problem,” Helga said, “Hufflepuff is
itching! What can you do to help me?”

Try talc,” I volunteered, and the coward came to the fore again as I stood up to go and shave.

Excerpt from Red High Heels:

Your red high heels remind me of a joke,” Roger said, and smiled at her.

Go on,” she encouraged.

There were two tramps and everyday in the evening they used to show one another what they had managed to collect during the day from various trash cans, or rubbish heaps.

What did you get today?” asked one tramp, a man.

The other, a woman, looked a bit dejected, and said, “nothing, but what did you get?”

I found these high heels,” he said producing from his sack a pair of shiny red high heel shoes, “would you like them?”

I’ve nothing to give you in exchange,” the woman tramp said mournfully.

The male tramp said nothing, but left the shoes where the female tramp could see them.

What about sex?” suggested the woman, as she quite fancied the shoes.

OK,” said the man, and the woman interrupted to say,

I’d better warn you, I’ve never been very sexy!”

OK,” said the man again, and they made arrangements for the ‘sex’ to commence.

The female tramp lay on her back and took off just enough clothes to allow the male tramp to lie on her body…

Suddenly the woman curled her legs around the man.

Hey,” said the man, “I thought you weren’t very sexy!”

I’m not, but I’m trying on the shoes!”

Roxanne, whilst Roger was telling this joke, had stood up and walked towards Roger’s bed picking up her red high heels on the way.

Help me to try these on!” she said.

Roger tried to jump to his feet, but met Roxanne half way up, as she was leaning over Roger. She dropped the red high heel shoes on the floor…
