Bree perched on the edge of the sofa. “Did you hear about the attack at the local shop?”

Yeah, it’s all over Facebook,” her sister replied.

I was there.”

Shit. Are you okay?”

I’m fine. Someone saved me.” Her cheeks warmed. “It turns out he has the same pendant as me, and similar, violet-coloured eyes.”

He?” Jane raised an eyebrow. Ruby red lips twitched in a smile. “Brianna Mills! The original Miss I’m-off-guys-forever, actually likes someone. I never thought I’d see the day.”

No, I don’t…well, maybe I do, but that’s not it.”

They laughed, and Jane made immature wolf whistle sounds.
Okay, okay.” She let Jane have her fun before continuing. “Jane, I need to tell you something.”

Yes, something huge, you said that already. Spill.”

It’s amazing…or weird, depending on your views.” She bit her lip. What if Jane freaked out?

Get it off your chest, sis.”

You know how I’ve always been a bit different to other people?” She took a breath, then blurted out the words as she exhaled. “It’s because I’m not from this planet.”

What?

You heard.”

Are you mad?”

No, I’m not mad.” She fidgeted on the sofa’s edge. “All I know is that it’s the most extraordinary feeling, Jane. I finally have a sense of who I am.”

Jane folded her arms. Her mouth opened to say something and then clamped shut again, repeatedly, like a goldfish. Bree imagined the expression on Jane’s face was something similar to how she must have looked when Quinn had told her. Except Jane didn’t have the ruggedly handsome Quinn Taylor gazing back at her with those intense, soul-piercing eyes of his. Alluring amethyst eyes.

What do you think, Jane? Weird or amazing?”

Please be okay with this.

Jane took a few moments to answer. “Weird…but in a good way, I think.” She rubbed her temple as though trying to make sense of it all. “Bloody hell, I feel like I’m in a science fiction movie or something.”

Yeah, that’s what I thought. But it is amazing, isn’t it?”

If you think so, Bree.”

The hesitation in her sister’s voice didn’t go unnoticed. “I do, Jane, more than anything.” Bree flung her arms around her sister and squeezed tight.

Jane returned the hug, much to her relief. “Ooh, I’m hugging an alien. Now that is weird!”

Brianna Mills grasped the curious pendant around her neck. Like before, when she’d first touched it, the violet jewel warmed, and her peripheral vision shrank back.

Her steps faltered. With somehow more focused vision, she watched the man coming towards her along the tree-lined track.

Jasper stopped rummaging in the undergrowth, sniffed the air, and wagged his tail. But despite her dog’s interest, she sensed something…odd.

It wasn’t just the disconcerting vision or the static electricity surrounding her.
Or even the disappointment as she pondered over the outcome of her adoption meeting earlier. No, this was something else, something tangible.

Electromagnetic energy rolled over her skin, made her scalp tingle. A strange, coppery scent circulated in the cool spring air.

Blood pulsated in her ears, muffling the sound of birds chirping in the trees. She came to a standstill, all five senses fizzing with an unseen force, her heartbeat pounding like tribal drums.

Still six metres ahead, the guy looked tall, well-built with broad shoulders, and casually dressed in a faded brown leather jacket and dark blue jeans, worn at the knees. Overlong blond hair rested on his shoulders, and messy waves fell either side of a tanned, ruggedly handsome face.

Drop. Dead. Bloody. Gorgeous.

A tiny spark ignited somewhere within and she forgot how to breathe.

Bree recognised him. But he wasn’t anyone she’d ever met before, not while she was awake. No, this was someone whom she used to dream of when she was a child.

It didn’t make sense. How could she have dreamt about him, what, fifteen or so years ago?

The spark became a small flame, breathing its warmth on parts of her that she’d forgotten existed. Her cheeks heated. She had so little experience with men. No wonder she’d fallen for the first guy to show her any interest and been naïve enough to get herself pregnant.

Jasper barked, which made her jump, and then raced towards the guy, wagging his tail and leaping around excitedly, greeting him like some long-lost friend.

Jasper! Get back here. Right now.”

Trying to focus through the tunnel vision, she willed her feet to walk the remaining distance to retrieve her dog.

Get a grip, Bree, get a grip.

Keeping her head down, she wished she hadn’t tied her hair in a loose bun, so she could have hidden her embarrassment behind the long tresses.

Sorry. Jasper doesn’t normally like strangers.” She gulped. Her words were breathless and pathetic, and she cursed under her breath. Is he a stranger though? With shaky hands and distorted vision, she grabbed her Labrador and fumbled with the lead, desperate to get the damn thing to clip on to Jasper’s collar.

Are you wearing blue contact lenses?” he asked in a deep, hypnotic, and strangely familiar voice.

Bree blinked rapidly and her vision returned to normal. “What…? No.” She wouldn’t look at him, preferring to give her attention to Jasper’s lead, now gripped so tightly her knuckles had turned white.

She could almost feel the guy’s stare burning the top of her head. The hairs on the back of her neck stood on end and she backed away—until she noticed his dog.

Similar to a pure white Alsatian, but she’d never seen one as massive or as muscular. It stared at her too, with weird violet eyes.

Violet eyes like hers.

Squinting, Ziva tried to see who’d spoken in a deep, smooth-as-silk British accent.

A tall man stood before her and greeted her with an alluring, lopsided smile that exuded confidence. Kind eyes crinkled at the corners.

His broad shoulders were clad in a navy, tailored business suit. With his thick hair, a rich, burnt umber colour, slicked back off his forehead, and an angular, clean-shaven jaw, the guy could have stepped off the set of a TV advert for men’s cologne. And his lips… oh boy, his lips. Full, well-defined, and made for sinning.

Her mouth dried. Kuala Lumpur grew more interesting by the second.

Elise filled in for her temporary inability to speak. “No, we haven’t. My sister failed to mention Pavilion or Lot 10. I’m afraid she doesn’t share my love for shopping.”

Surprise flashed across his face before his smile widened then hitched higher in one corner. Yep, male model material. Just my luck if he’s gay.

Elise shifted from one foot to the other and adjusted her hold on her dozen or so shopping bags. “Are the malls far?”
No, not far. They’re near the Golden Triangle part of the city.”

Ziva stifled another groan. More malls, right near where they were staying.

The guy tipped his head. “I’m Sam, by the way.” Sophisticated charm oozed from every pore. “It’s lovely to meet two beautiful English roses so far from home.” Although he spoke to both of them, he directed an intense gaze at Ziva. Mischievous cobalt eyes sparkled in the bright sunlight then he winked at her. Hmm, not gay then.

Hi, I’m Elise,” her sister said, sticking out her chest. “Nice to meet you, too.” She shuffled her feet again. “My feet are roasting standing here.”

Ziva glanced at Elise’s unsuitable choice of footwear as she stood on a drain cover. “I’m not surprised your feet are hot. It’s ninety-five degrees and you’re wearing high-heeled boots. I told you to wear your flat sandals.”

Elise rolled her eyes. “Flat sandals do not go with this outfit,” she said resignedly. “Kuala Lumpur is home to some of the best shopping malls in South East Asia—who cares about a little discomfort?”

So, you were listening when I read out the tourist brochure and the amazing places I’d like to visit.”

No, not really.” Elise gave an apologetic shrug. “I heard ‘shopping malls’ mostly.”

Sam laughed. His attention never left Ziva. “And your name is…?”

The crowd surged forward to cross the road. Someone jostled past Ziva, accidentally knocking her elbow. Her tatty canvas handbag and her one and only shopping bag dropped to the ground. She gasped as her new lingerie tumbled onto the dusty pavement. “Oh, crap!”

Stooping to her haunches, she then hastily stuffed lacy bras and matching thongs back into the paper bag. Her blonde curls tumbled over her face, helping to hide cheeks that burned hotter than the pavement. A serious contender for Miss Tiny Tits UK, she’d been spoiled for choice when she’d seen that the malls in KL catered for smaller women, so she’d treated herself to a few items of sexy underwear. Not that she had an occasion to wear it, but still, the last thing she needed was to have it displayed for all to see.

Sam kneeled in front of her, picked up a black bra, and swung it on his finger. “Here, I think you missed one.”

Head still down, she reached for the bra, but he hooked his finger around the strap and held it firm. She tugged. “Let go.”

Not until you tell me your name.” He tugged back, stretching the lace and elastic across the distance between them. “And not until you look at me.”

Vampires, rom-coms and chocolate (#romance #pnr @abbeymacmunn)

By Abbey MacMunn (Guest Blogger)

Hello, my name is Abbey MacMunn and I write paranormal/fantasy romance. Today I’d like to talk about my favourite movies and the inspiration behind Touched, my debut paranormal romance released 13th July.

When I’m not writing, or I’ve had a particularly stressful day (we all have those, right?) there’s nothing I like doing more than chilling out while watching a great movie—anything from rom-coms to sci fi to superheroes. Give me a big bar of Cadbury’s Fruit and Nut, or Reese’s NutRageous—which really difficult to get here in the UK—and I’m one happy bunny.

My favourite movies to watch? Firstly, anything with a fantasy element—witches, vampires, magic, superpowers and I’m at the front of the queue. One thing I insist on though is awesome CGI (Computer Generated Imagery, for all you non-geeky folk.) What I mean is that the special effects have to look real, totally believable. If only for a few moments, I want to be swept up in the in magic of it all.

Secondly, I like a good rom-com. The Proposal is one of my favourites. The chemistry between Margaret and Andrew (Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds) is fab, and the scene where they bump into each other—totally naked—is hilarious, but for me, the star is Grandma Annie, played by the delightful Betty White.

So, the inspiration for Touched came from a combination of the things I love; a paranormal romance with a dash of chick-lit. It’s about a naïve hybrid, a super-sexy immortal guardian, a kooky, cupid-playing witch (aka Grandma Annie) and a friend’s deadly betrayal. If you’d like to read an excerpt, check out my website.

Thanks for reading!

From Twitter Pitch to Publishing Contract (#paranormal #romance #coverreveal @abbeymacmunn)

By Abbey MacMunn (Guest Blogger)

Hello! My name is Abbey MacMunn and I write fantasy/paranormal romance. I’m a new author and I’d like to talk about my journey to publication. I hope my story will inspire other writers too.

It's the stuff dreams are made of, well, my dreams anyway.

Last year, December 10th, I was on Twitter and came across #SFFpit, a Twitter pitch party. For those of you who don't know, a Twitter pitch party is where you compile a tweet about your completed, polished, unpublished manuscript in the hope of attracting an agent or publisher.

I’d done Twitter pitch parties before, including #PitMad, so I had a few pitches ready, but I wasn’t sure whether to pitch or not—after all, this pitch party focused on science fiction and fantasy novels and I had a paranormal/fantasy romance. So I read the guidelines and yes, my book did fit into one of the categories. I also looked to see which industry professionals were taking part and noticed a couple of publishers and agents I wanted to submit to.

So I went for it. I tweeted my pitch and waited to see if someone favourited/liked my pitch. Going on my past experiences, I knew it didn’t always happen, but I enjoy taking part. If nothing else, I’ll know if my pitch is good or not, and I love reading all the other pitches too, seeing which ones get a favourite and why, then learning from them.

You can probably guess I got a favourite. WHOOHOO! But hold on, I had to do my research, make sure the person who liked my pitch was someone I’d be happy to send my manuscript to. Another whoohoo! The favourite came from an editor at Tirgearr Publishing, a publisher on my submission list.

After a sleepless night, I sent my manuscript and waited. And waited.

Anyone who has submitted a manuscript will know the agony of waiting, the obsessive checking of emails when you’ve finally plucked up the courage to send your baby out into the big bad world.

So while I was waiting, I sent out more submissions. Christmas came and went. So did January.

I got back a few standard ‘no thanks’ replies to my submissions, but I was also getting a number of what I call positive rejections. Rejections that were encouraging rather than disappointing. And I’d had a ‘nearly but not quite’ rejection last year for another submission, a sci fi romance. The editor there had been kind enough to write a long, insightful email explaining the reasons why she rejected it, so I’m rewriting that one based on her advice.

But back to my journey to publication. I got impatient. Three months went by and I’d heard nothing from several publishers and agents, so one Friday afternoon, February 12th to be precise, on the spur of the moment I decided to send a gentle nudge.

Within twenty minutes I got a reply from Tirgearr Publishing. ‘Yes, I’d like to contract the manuscript.’

WHAT??

I couldn’t believe it. I questioned it. It can’t be true. They’ve sent the email to the wrong person, surely? My stomach churned, my hands shook, I started to laugh.

Real life took over. It was time for the school run. I couldn’t wipe the ridiculous smile off my face as I picked up my kids. ‘Yes, I’d like to contract the manuscript.’ Those seven words kept repeating in my head. I must have looked like a mad woman, but I didn’t care. I returned home to find another email—with the contract attached.

So that’s how I got my publishing contract. My advice to aspiring writers out there? Give it go. Take part in Twitter pitch parties, you never know where it might lead. The next #SFFpit takes part on 23rd June 2016 and there are plenty more throughout the year.

GO ON, TRY IT!

Thanks for reading.

Excerpt

He might have just saved her life, but pinned to the freezing concrete by some wannabe hero was not her idea of fun. Cami Wilson shoved the unyielding wall of his chest, fighting not only him but the rising panic. ‘Get the hell off me!’

The guy remained on top of her, using his large frame to protect her from the chunks of smouldering metal hurtling to the ground around her. Icy air met with fiery heat and smoke infused the atmosphere like the fifth of November, but there were no sparkling fireworks to admire, only the flaming inferno, which seconds earlier had been her car.

Maybe if she hadn’t been so intrigued by the antique brooch she held in her hand or distracted by the weird, periodic buzzing emitting from it, she might have seen him coming at her in full, rugby tackle mode.

He lifted a little, easing the crushing pressure on her ribs, but remained inches from her face. Glacier-blue eyes met hers, captivating and intense. ‘Are you hurt?’

His gravelly voice did something tingly to her insides. She went to speak, but no words came. Nothing came to mind. Not the explosion. Not the contents of her shopping trolley strewn all over Morrisons’ car park. Not the fact she could have been killed. Somehow, none of it registered.

She gawped back at him like a doe-eyed teenager, taking in the angular sweep of a jawline peppered with dark stubble, and well-defined lips that parted invitingly as he drew in his breath.

His gaze lingered on her mouth in a breath-taking moment right out of one of those soppy rom-coms she liked to watch.

Forget burning cars and curious brooches… hel-lo, future husband.

Somewhere to her left, an engine revved loudly, and he turned his head towards the sound. Overlong, tousled hair tickled her cheek, and she got a faint whiff of citrus shampoo.

Hmm, lovely…

A second later, his attention returned to her. His grave expression burned with an urgency that brought her down from the clouds. ‘Dammit! I asked if you were hurt.’

No, I…’

In a move so swift it wasn’t humanly possible, he leapt to his feet and hauled her up beside him. The brooch slipped from her gloved hand and landed on the ground.

The man cursed under his breath and stooped to retrieve it. With an exasperated look, he waved it in front of her as though she were a baby dropping her dummy for the hundredth time. ‘You need to take more care of this. Don’t you know how important it is?’

Sudden indignation flared. Cami snatched the jewel from his grasp and slipped it back into her coat pocket. Okay, the guy rocked the sexy, just-rolled-out-of-bed look, but his patronising attitude set her teeth on edge. What right did he have to tell her what to do? And what on Earth did he know about a weird, vibrating brooch she’d been given by her adoptive mother, the only clue she had to her past?
