This coming Sunday, the 30th of August, will be the next Charity Sunday.

Charity Sunday is a meme designed to give authors and bloggers a chance to give back to the world—as well as, hopefully, attract new readers.

How does it work? Each participant selects a favorite charity. Before Charity Sunday, you should prepare a blog post that: 1) talks about the charity and why you support it; 2) provides a link to the charity; 3) includes an excerpt from one of your books; 4) includes the code to show links to other participating blogs.

It’s fun if you can make the excerpt relate somehow to your chosen charity, but this isn’t required.

For every comment left on your post, you commit to giving some amount to the relevant charity. The specific charity and the amount to donate are up to you. You can set an upper limit to your donation if you want.

If you’d like to participate in the next Charity Sunday, just sign up using the Linky List below. Please be sure that the link you enter will lead directly to your Charity Sunday post, not just to the home page of your blog.

For more detailed instructions, go here:

Review Tuesday: The Septembers of Shiraz - #memoir #Iran #ReviewTuesday

The Summers of Shiraz by Dalia Sofer

Harper Perennial , 2008

Cherish your joys. Embrace your loved ones. Celebrate the sweetness of the familiar. In the blink of an eye, everything can change.

Isaac Amin and his attractive wife Farnaz are Iranian first, Jewish second. Both grew up under the Shah, speaking Persian as their mother tongue. Thanks to Isaac’s industry and business acumen, they live a prosperous life in Tehran, with a holiday home in lovely, historic Shiraz. Their son Parviz attends university in America. Their daughter Shirin is still in school. Their servant Habibeh, who has worked in their household since Shirin was an infant, is practically a member of the family.

The Islamic revolution and the ouster of the Shah have stolen some of their comforts – no more parties or fashionable clothing – but despite the atmosphere of constant menace, the Amin family’s life continues more or less as before. Then comes the day when bearded, black-clothed guards appear at Isaac’s office, arrest him on the charge of spying for Israel, and throw him in prison. As far as Farnaz is concerned, Isaac has simply disappeared. She does what she can to search for him, drawing on reserves of strength she hadn’t realized she possessed. Meanwhile Isaac endures torture and terror, trying to maintain his sanity, knowing that every day could easily be his last.

In the U.S., Parviz knows nothing of this, but he struggles all the same, friendless and alone in a foreign culture. Nine year old Shirin silently wrestles with her fears and tries to understand how everything she’d accepted as normal could suddenly vanish.

The Septembers of Shiraz is a graceful, nuanced, heart-rending book, part memoir, part novel. The author herself fled Iran with her family at the age of ten. Obviously the book reflects her personal experiences. However, she imagines and portrays the perspectives of the adults in her world as well as her own child’s view. In the process, she paints a subtle, many-layered picture of the Persian culture she left behind. When we hear the word “Iran” in the West, we think of stern, black-robed Muslim clerics, fanatic terrorists and women in burkhas. This isn’t the world in which Ms. Sofer, and Shirin, grew up. That world included warm friendships, sensory delights, cherished traditions and a profound sense of history. In a sense, our view of Iran, the face of the revolution, is an aberration.

I found this book deeply moving, and at times, difficult to read. The descriptions of Isaac’s experience in prison, though not gratuitously violent, horrified me to the point that I put the book aside for several months, unable to stomach the nightmarish inhumanity of his treatment. Yet Dalia Sofer does not paint the guards as fundamentally evil men. Like every character in the book, they have suffered from injustice and are adapting to dangerous times.

The gorgeous prose in The Septembers of Shiraz pulled me back to the book, even though I knew Isaac might well perish during his hellish sojourn in captivity. If the real world individuals who inspired the novel could endure the horrors of their times, surely I as a reader could do so as well. Indeed, it was almost a responsibility, to follow the story to the end and appreciate its hard truths.

I don’t think I will spoil your experience by telling you that Isaac is in fact released eventually, and that the Amins manage to escape from Iran, as the author did. However, the costs are high. Abandoning your country, your language, your friends and your memories must be painful beyond words. Still, Ms. Sofer manages to capture the paradoxical emotions aroused when you choose a life of exile.

If you’re seeking light reading, I don’t recommend this book. On the other hand, if you’re not afraid to read a bit of historical truth, a gut-wrenching yet heart-warming portrayal of one family’s struggle to survive, you shouldn’t miss it.

Tortured heroes versus Alpha males - #HistoricalRomance #Fashion #Giveaway @JeanneMackin1

The Last Collection cover

By Jeanne Mackin (Guest Blogger)

All the times I fell in love it was with men who surprised me. And before you hope for too much salacious detail, I’ll point out that falling in love, real love, not just fun and sex, was a rare thing in my life. Altogether, three times total, maybe three and a half, and the last love affair turned into a marriage of many decades. And he’s still surprising me.

So what’s important for me in life, and in my writing, because they run on parallel tracks, is that people be fully dimensional, sometimes unpredictable. They must have their own minds and needs and exist for themselves as well as for me. Perhaps that’s how I know I’m not a narcissist, just a novelist with a few quirks of her own.

So the question of tortured versus alpha men comes down to this: a real male character is both. A real man, and a real character, to satisfy me, and whatever is happening in the novel I’m working on, must have moments of strength, and moments of weakness and failure. I imagine that a male who is never weak is either lying sometimes or lacks imagination. A man who is never strong is underdeveloped and uninteresting, in life as well as fiction.

Of the various male characters in The Last Collection, the most important is Charlie, the brother of my antagonist, Lily Sutter. They are both Americans who, in 1938, are spending time in Paris. Charlie is in love with a Parisian socialite. Lily is trying to move past the grief of her young husband’s death. They are in very different emotional states and yet their brother and sister love is the one reliable thing in both their lives. Charlies is strong for his sister and his lover. He would move mountains for both of them. And yet he is weak sometimes when he and his lover quarrel. His confidence in himself is easily shaken.

Lily finds a new lover in Paris, and he, too combines strong and weak. Because he’s a German soldier, he exudes an aura of control and command. But he’s also very young and sensitive, a musician pulled away from his studies because of the war. His weakness comes from his sense of having to play a role, not being his true self.

Both men will face moments of crisis, life and death moments hinging on that important interplay between strength and weakness. And the women who love them must live with the consequences as well.

Blurb

An American woman becomes entangled in the intense rivalry between iconic fashion designers Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli in this captivating novel from the acclaimed author of The Beautiful American.

Paris, 1938. Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli are fighting for recognition as the most successful and influential fashion designer in France, and their rivalry is already legendary. They oppose each other at every turn, in both their politics and their designs: Chanel’s are classic, elegant, and practical; Schiaparelli’s bold, experimental, and surreal.

When Lily Sutter, a recently widowed young American teacher, visits her brother, Charlie, in Paris, he insists on buying her a couture dress—a Chanel. Lily, however, prefers a Schiaparelli. Charlie’s beautiful and socially prominent girlfriend soon begins wearing Schiaparelli’s designs as well, and much of Paris follows in her footsteps.

Schiaparelli offers budding artist Lily a job at her store, and Lily finds herself increasingly involved with Schiaparelli and Chanel’s personal war. Their fierce competition reaches new and dangerous heights as the Nazis and the looming threat of World War II bear down on Paris.

Rave reviews for The Last Collection

"Sophisticated couture wars and looming world wars take center stage in Mackin’s latest, with a plot that buzzes with love triangles and political intrigue. A gorgeous meditation on art, fashion, and heartbreak. Stunning."

--Fiona Davis, national bestselling author of The Masterpiece

Exquisitely melding world politics and high fashion, THE LAST COLLECTION is a smart, witty, heartfelt, and riveting look at the infamous rivalry between Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli set against a gripping period in history. Mackin’s powerful novel brings these characters to life and transports the reader, juxtaposing both the gaiety and tension of Paris on the brink of war. As elegant and captivating as the designs depicted in the novel, THE LAST COLLECTION is the perfect read for both historical fiction lovers and fashion aficionados. Simply stunning.”

--Chanel Cleeton, USA Today bestselling author of Next Year in Havana

A wonderful story of two intensely creative women, their vibrant joie de vivre, and backbiting competition played out against the increasingly ominous threat of the Nazi invasion of Paris. Seamless research makes every character leap to life and kept me totally engaged from beginning to end.

--Shelley Noble, New York Times bestselling author of Lighthouse Beach

A vibrant portrait of two designers cut from very different cloth, Jeanne Mackin’s THE LAST COLLECTION pits bold Coco Chanel and colorful Elsa Schiaparelli against each other in a fiery feud even as the ominous clouds of World War II darken the horizon. A captivating read!”

--Stephanie Marie Thornton, author of American Princess

"As Hitler and the Nazis gather strength and the world braces for war, Elsa Schiaparelli and Coco Chanel, whose politics differ as much as their couture, wage a war of their own. Lily Sutter, the woman who finds herself in the middle of their feud, has a battle of her own as she struggles to make a new start amidst extreme grief and loss. From New York to Paris, Jeanne Mackin takes the reader on an enthralling journey, complete with such vivid descriptions of the clothing, you can practically see them on the page. Beautifully rendered and meticulously researched, THE LAST COLLECTION is a must read."

--Renée Rosen, author of Park Avenue Summer

Excerpt

Of the three primary colors, blue is most suggestive of paradox: it is the color of longing and sadness, and yet it is also the color of joy and fulfillment. On a ship, at night, blue water merges into blue sky, so blue is the color of places with no borders, no edges.

If you throw salt into a fire, the flames will burn blue. Salt rubbed into a wound renews the pain, intensifies it. Seeing others kiss and embrace was salt in my wound, a blue flame burning the length of me.

Blue best represents the contradictions of the heart, the need to be loved and cherished at the same time that we wish for freedom.

Blue, the color of the Worth gown that the little girl Elsa Schiaparelli found in her Roman piazza attic, the color of the covers of the penny romances Coco Chanel found in the orphanage attic.

Blue is what made Elsa Schiaparelli’s daring color, shocking pink, so special: it is pink infused with blue, turning a demure blush into an electric surge. Schiaparelli turned girlish pink into the color of seduction by adding that touch of blue.

And always, there is the blue of the Paris sky on a June day.

Listen. I’m going to tell you a story about fashion, and politics. And, of course, about love. The three primaries, like the primary colors.

About the Author

Jeanne Mackin ‘s latest novel, The Last Collection, A Novel of Elsa Schiaparelli and Coco Chanel takes the reader to Paris, just before World War II, and the intense, dangerous rivalry between the two queens of fashion. Her previous novels include A Lady of Good Family, the award winning The Beautiful American, The Sweet By and By, Dreams of Empire, The Queen’s War, and The Frenchwoman.

Her historical fictions explore the lives of strong women who change their worlds…because we know the world always needs a lot of change! She has worked all the traditional ‘writers’ jobs’ from waitressing to hotel maid, anything that would leave her a few hours each morning for writing. Most recently, she taught creative writing at the graduate level. She has traveled widely, in Europe and the Middle East and can think of no happier moment than sitting in a Paris cafĂ©, drinking coffee or a Pernod, and simply watching, while scribbling in a notebook.

Nerds Make the Best Lovers - #AmWriting #IntelligenceIsSexy #EroticHistory

A sexy nerd

The recent lockdown has given me the largely enjoyable opportunity to reflect on my personal erotic history. One thing I’ve realized is that almost all my relationships have involved people who might be labeled as “nerds”. That term has been twisted a bit recently, so that it has come to suggest pimply incels who spend all their waking hours playing video games. When I use the label, I mean guys who are might not be conventionally attractive, but who have above average intelligence. Nerds may be shy, unfashionable, or socially awkward. They’re not usually extroverts. Typically, they’re not sports- or fitness-oriented, preferring to read or tinker or hack away at personal projects. They’re the exact opposite of the alpha males so common in erotica and erotic romance. But believe it or not, nerds make the best lovers.

Nerds are grateful. They’re as interested in sex as anyone (maybe more), but in many cases have had less success with women because of their less-than-stellar physical appearance or their geeky interests. So when they do get some nookie, they make the woman involved feel really appreciated. At least, that’s been my experience. A well-fucked nerd is a very happy and generous guy.

Nerds do their research. A nerd understands that research can sometimes be compensate for lack of experience. My nerdy lovers have often known far more about sexual technique than I did – simply because they’d made a serious study of it.

Nerds are creative. They’re adept at devising interesting and unexpected erotic scenarios. Some of them even invent devious sexual devices for pleasure or torment.

With nerds, you have something to talk about in the afterglow. Nobody can spend every waking hour having sex. (Not even me.) When your lover is a nerd, the non-sexual moments can be just as interesting as the erotic peaks. Since I’m something of a female nerd (if that’s a concept that makes sense), I’ve often enjoyed long philosophical and/or technical conversations with my geeky partners.

Nerds are kinky and experimental. Okay, that might not be true of all nerds, but based on my personal experience I’d say the kink quotient is a lot higher than for supposedly masterful alphas. I had one nerd lover who enjoyed dressing up as Dr. Frankenfurter, corset, garter belt, stilettos and all. That same guy took me downtown to some seedy adult theater, where we watched dirty movies and played around in one of the booths. Then of course, there was the man who initiated me into dominance and submission, an Uber-nerd if there ever was one, who had degrees in physics and philosophy and a substantial private collection of BDSM porn.

My husband probably qualifies as a nerd. Certainly he’s brilliant, creative and able to fix any sort of machinery. He also looks a bit like a short Scandinavian troll (especially when I met him, when his face was obscured by a bushy red beard). Yet as we got to know one another, he told me story after story (at my urging) of all the women he’d bedded. Guess they’d figured out they should look past the surface! Alas, my DH is not one of the kinky nerds – but otherwise he’s willing to try almost anything.

Needless to say, nerds figure prominently in a lot of my erotica. One of my favorites is Dr. Theo Moore in The Gazillionaire and the Virgin. A brilliant AI scientist and a closet Dom, Theo is the virgin of the title. When he meets the gazillionaire, Silicon Valley entrepreneur Rachel Zelinsky, he has a lot of theoretical knowledge about sex, but no personal experience. Of course, that’s soon remedied!

My current work in progress features so many nerds I can’t keep track of them all. The Pornographer’s Apprentice introduces the Toy Makers Guild, a secret society of Victorian engineers who design and build outrageous sexual contraptions for the rich and powerful. Gillian Smith is one of the few female apprentices to have qualified for the Guild – based on her intellect, her electrical and mechanical engineering skills, and her insatiable libido.

Her experience agrees with mine. Her geeky colleagues are more that capable of satisfying her – both physically and intellectually!

So let other authors swoon over gruff hunks with tight butts and six-pack abs, or pent-house billionaires with designer shoes and perfect hair. I’ll take a nerd every time.

Excerpt

Molly hadn’t seen another soul on the beach during the whole time she’d been there. The cottage had been advertised as having a private beach, and –so far—that’s exactly what it had been. Who the hell was he?

Annoyed, she reached for her T-shirt and held it against her boobs, still lying close against the ground. The clumps of beach grass lining the top of the dunes gave her cover, but she wanted her T-shirt to hand in case she needed it.

It really was a man, and he seemed to be alone.

A very attractive man.

He was tall and well built, with closely shorn hair, left longer on top. He wore loud shorts and a threadbare, faded T-shirt. He had the look of a beachcomber, but this was England and the only beachcombers Molly had ever seen were on TV, on Australian soap operas. His legs were corded with strong muscles, and she eyed them as an artist, and more, as a woman—a woman subconsciously hungry for such a sight.

Perhaps she’d been away from people too long. A few trips to the local village for supplies obviously wasn’t enough to keep her in touch with the real world.

Torn between the urge to march over there and ask what the bloody hell he was doing on her beach, and the equally compelling urge to continue secretly observing him, she tried to figure out what to do.

Glued to the spot, the desire to continue observing took the lead.

As the moments passed she noticed again how supremely well built and attractive he was. She smiled to herself, watching as he kicked off his sports shoes and walked barefoot toward the edge of the shore.

As she watched, he walked into the water and dipped a long plastic tube into the surf. He lifted it and looked at it in the light, then sealed it with a plastic cap. She wondered what he was doing. He walked back to where he’d left his shoes and deposited the tube.

She could hardly drag her attention away, but it was her beach, it said so in the advert. Private, secluded beach, the perfect getaway. So what was he doing here? Who did he think he was? She had to remind herself she was from a city and things were different here. Along the wild coast in Northumberland roaming beachcomber types might be the norm. She was enjoying the privacy of the place though, and felt provoked to defend it.

Then he began to strip off.

Molly’s eyebrows lifted, astonished as she was by his actions.

He pulled his T-shirt over his head, giving her a look at his perfectly shaped torso as he did so.

Wow,” she whispered approvingly.

If she was looking for inspiration, she’d surely found it today. He was a handsome specimen all right, gorgeous looking, and with a very impressive physique. The guy worked out, that much was obvious. He had amazing, powerful shoulders and a six-pack to match. He stood on the edge of the surf as if he owned it—it was as if Neptune himself had just walked out of the waves.

Molly’s eyebrows shot up when she realized he wasn’t stopping at the T-shirt.

He was busy undoing the tie at his waistband and was about to drop his shorts.

She glanced around, half expecting to see somebody else running over to accompany him. But, no, he appeared to be alone. And she was trapped there, clutching her T-shirt to her chest as she observed him, unseen…

I need to ride your one-eyed trouser snake.”

Huh?”

I. Want. Sex,” she said slowly, drawing out the words with an aligned tone, as if saying them this way were diplomatic.
