I promise nothing will separate us again. Just like it said in our vows, ‘Til death do us part.’”

Well, about fifty percent of all marriages are ‘til divorce do us part.’”

We’ll be in the other fifty percent.”

How do you know?” I was still worried.

Because I love you and I am not stupid enough to make the same mistake twice. Unless you have any plans to break us up?”

No. I wasn’t worried about me. I was worried about you.”

We’re good then?”

Yes, I guess so.” I could hear a little sigh of relief on the other end of the phone. “Other than Saturday, have you ever noticed how we have a lot of these kinds of conversations over the phone or out in public?”

Yes.”

I wonder why that is.”

Because when we’re alone together, we can’t keep our hands off each other,” Will said in a sexy voice.

I guess that’s true. Do you think we’ll ever be able to have them when we’re alone together?”

If you mean, ‘do I think that we’ll be able to keep our hands off each other at some point,’ I certainly hope not. But I do think we might be able to figure out how to multitask.”

Across the Winds of Time

While on a genealogical research journey through the Midwest, Molly Hamilton impulsively buys a 100-year-old Victorian house in the middle of a cornfield, and falls in love with the house’s owner...the original owner, that is. Can he be a ghost? The handsome, intriguing attorney certainly feels solid—and somehow her soul knows she has always loved him.

Darius Ferguson has no idea how he has come to present-day Iowa. The last thing he knew, the year was 1880, and he had just buried his fiancée, who happens to look exactly like Molly. He cannot separate the two women in his heart—to him, they are one.

In spite of being drawn to him, Molly thinks Darius is unhinged. Darius wonders if he has joined his fiancée in purgatory. If time travel is possible, will love be enough to build a future together?

Excerpt

How did you get in here?” I choked out. “Who are you?”

Darius stole a sideways glance over his shoulder to meet my eyes—or to see that indeed I did not have a gun aimed at him—before turning his face away.

It is I, Molly. The same man you met two weeks ago. The same man you loved over a hundred years ago.”

You’re nuts!” I spit out. “You’re not here. I’m just imagining things.” My knees were aching, and I shifted awkwardly in the tub to dive under the water again, keeping my neck twisted to watch him. I couldn’t stay in the bathtub all night. I felt so vulnerable—even if this was a hallucination...or a fantasy.

So, since you’re not really here, you wouldn’t mind keeping your face turned away, so I can get out of the tub, would you?” My heart pounded, the rhythm matching the pounding in my head from smacking it on the edge of the tub. “Please?” I couldn’t keep the quiver from my voice.
Certainly. It is not proper for me to be standing here at any rate. I simply came upstairs to see if you were here, and there you were—in my tub—a vision of bubbles and curly brown ringlets.”
I pressed a hand to my damp ponytail. A sudden warmth in the pit of my stomach contradicted the cold grip in my chest.

Go away,” I pleaded. “I may want to daydream about you, but I don’t know that I want to actually see you.”

As you wish, Molly.” He threw another quick glance over his shoulder, and his mouth curved into an embarrassed smile before he moved away.

I watched him disappear and panicked.

Wait,” I shrieked. “Wait!”

Yes, dear?” He backed up to the edge of the door again, still keeping his face averted.

Wait for me downstairs. Don’t go yet. I’ll be right there.”

Darius inclined his head slightly to the side where I saw his profile, and I could have sighed when a single golden-brown curl fell forward in his face.

About the Author

Bess McBride made her first serious writing attempt when she was 14. She shut herself up in her bedroom one summer while obsessively working on a time travel/pirate novel set in the beloved Caribbean of her youth, but she wasn't able to hammer it out on a manual typewriter (oh yeah, she's that old) before it was time to go back to school. The draft of that novel has long since disappeared, but the story is still simmering within, and she will finish the adventure one day soon.

Bess was born in Aruba to American parents and lived in Venezuela until her family returned to the United States when she was 12. She couldn't fight the global travel bug within and joined the U.S. Air Force at 18 to "see the world." After 21 wonderful and fulfilling years traveling the world and gaining one beautiful daughter, she pursued her dream of finally getting a college education. With a license in mental health therapy, she worked with veterans and continues to work on behalf of veterans. She writes romantic suspense, contemporary, light paranormal/fantasy and time travel romances and currently has eight novels published. She can be contacted through her web site at http://www.bessmcbride.com.

A Skeleton at Her Door

By E. Ayers (Guest Blogger)

Thanks, Lisabet, for inviting me to be your guest again. It's great to be here again with you and your friends.

October is the fall season for most of us in the northern hemisphere. That means cooler nights and cooler days. It's a time for the leaves to turn red, yellow, and orange. Now, if you'd like an explanation of how the color is in those leaves even when they are green, I'd be more than willing to don my botany cap and explain it sometime. But I'd much rather talk about one particular holiday - Halloween.

It's really not a USA holiday, as its roots trace back to Samhain and other pagan festivities, which were then turned into a Christian holiday to honor the dead and to celebrate the Saints. Anyway, this jumbled heritage got tossed in our American melting pot, and by the 1920's people began to celebrate it. The result is today's Halloween with costumes, trick or treat, and carved pumpkins amongst pretty fall decorations.

It's actually my favorite holiday. I love the colors of fall and I love pumpkins. I love decorating the porch, front door, and my mantels with gourds, pumpkins, fall berries, corn, and other fun things. I'm also a sucker for a bowl of candy corn. As the holiday approaches it's fun to tuck in a witch's hat, some plastic black spiders, or an adorable skeleton.

They say to write what you know. I did. Many years ago, I was involved in a community Halloween party with a haunted woods for the older kids, and a clubhouse party for the younger ones. We had a community member who was part of a little theater and had access to all sorts of things including a woman who was more than willing to donate her skills as a makeup artist. Put a handful of creative adults together and we had a haunted woods that was totally awesome.

I knew my single male neighbor was going to a big fundraiser where they auction off the Halloween costumed guys for dinner. It was growing in popularity and a financial success. Who wouldn't want a dinner date with Spiderman, Zorro, or Count Dracula? Well publicized, it took place a few days before Halloween. Considering I was married to Prince Charming and didn't have a lot of extra money, the fundraiser was the least of my concerns. I only knew that my neighbor Roger intended to be part of the haunted woods with the same costume as he was using for the fundraiser.

About three days before Halloween my doorbell rang. Like an idiot I opened the door without even looking to see who it was. There stood this incredible skeleton. My mouth fell open. I knew this makeup artist was trying things ahead of time so I figured Roger used her before his big fundraiser dinner. I swear it was bitter cold, so I dragged him in, and called up the stairs for my girls to come see him. The guy was not talking. I'm walking around him. I'm admiring his…ah-hem…costume. Really. The costume. His shoulders were this wide, and his butt was this little, and his… There are no bones in certain places. He was ripped! He had the leg muscles of a skier. The arms of a…Oh, yeah. It was the costume I was admiring, definitely the costume! It glowed in the dark. It covered his body, feet, hands, and head, except for his face. That was carefully painted.

Really, it was the costume. I'd never seen one like it before or since. It fit the man like something worn by an Olympic speed skater. Unfortunately, all I'd even seen my neighbor in was a suit and tie. So I assumed… Until one of my girls said, "Mom, Roger has brown and this guy's eyes are blue."

"You're not Roger?" My heart fell into my stomach. Who did I just yank into my house?

That incident became the opening of A Skeleton at Her Door. What if? What if the woman who opened the door to a skeleton was divorced with an ex-husband who was abusive? What if the skeleton was a really nice guy who's been burned by enough women that he's lost faith in ever finding a woman who could be faithful?

I write sweet romances and I write what I call sensual romances where I don't close the bedroom door, but if your fourteen year old reads it you won't have to explain a thing, although I wouldn't consider it suggested teen reading. I write for adults. A Skeleton at Her Door is a sensual romance. It's about trusting, putting the past away, and finding love when it's least expected. It's also about blending two households, parenting, three children, and sneaking off for some adult time.

Just for fun, if you email me at e.ayers [ at] ayersbooks.com and put "Blog" in the subject, I'll enter your name into a drawing for a free ebook of A Skeleton at Her Door.
Here's a sexy except of their first time together.

Angie looked up into Tom's light brown eyes and she knew she had to make a decision.

"The condoms are in the van."

He grinned. "I stocked this place, too. I like being prepared."

He sat her up and then pulled her to her feet. She smiled as she watched him put their glasses in the sink and check the woodstove one last time. He picked up the single oil lamp and took it with him to the small bedroom.

"The bathroom's there." He grinned. "There's a light switch in there."

When she came out, he had turned down the covers and was waiting for her.

"If you change your mind, tell me," he whispered in her ear. "We'll take this slowly."

She nodded as he slipped her sweater off. His fingers trailed across the top of her shoulders and then followed the outline of her camisole to her cleavage. She inhaled. Excitement ripped through her and with it a mild feeling of dread. He unbuttoned his shirt and then pulled off the tee he had under it. There was a small narrow diamond shaped patch of hair on his chest. She reached out and ran her fingers through it. He dropped his pants.

Cotton knit undies covered him but didn't disguise what was under them. He was gorgeous. Most twenty year old males didn't look as good.

"You don't look quite as bony," she said in a low voice.

He chuckled as he dropped her slacks and caressed her legs. "And you look lovely."

She chewed at her lower lip as he started to lift her camisole off.

"You're okay with what we're doing?" he asked.

She couldn't look at him. She wanted to tell him no, but she wanted to say yes. She was just as horny, and wanted it probably as much as he did. All she could do was turn away from him.

Now, her back was to him, and his fingers were on her bra hooks. Obviously he had taken that as a sign to remove her bra. It fell to the floor. His hands were on her waist traveling slowly to her breasts. She inhaled and held the breath as heat traveled through her.

He pulled her back against his chest and she exhaled. The room was chilly and he was warm. He let go of her and she could tell he was removing his undies. Hers followed and then he pulled her against him again. His hand moved her hair from her neck and his lips caressed her nape. Then she felt his thumb tracing the scar on her shoulder.

"I'll never hurt you," he whispered. "Never."

His hands traveled from her shoulders to her breasts and then lower. She forgot how to breathe.

He lifted her arms over her head and began to nibble from her elbow to her underarm and then around to a breast. She heard an odd buzz and then heard him sigh. "It's the house."

He left her and reached for his pants. He opened the mobile phone connection. "Hello."

"That's fine. Thanks.”

“Yes. Lock up. I'm staying at the cabin."

"Yes. She's with me." A slight chuckle erupted. "I'm your father. Don't ask me those questions. Go to bed." He closed the phone and put it next to the bed. "That was Emily. Lissy's asleep on the sofa."

She nodded and watched his eyes. His gaze traveled over her body. Suddenly, she felt ashamed of her nudity and she wanted to hide. Instead, she gulped.

He drew her back into his arms. His lips covered hers, parting them. Gentle and tender, yet demanding and full of want, his actions were of a man who hungered for her. Her own feelings of lust overrode her panic and fear. One hand was on her back and the other on her bottom. He held her tight to him as his mouth devoured hers. Heat pulsed through her and pooled between her legs. Sexy and lovingly, he swept her off her feet, carried her to his bed, and pulled the covers over her. Her body warmed in anticipation.

He turned the lamp down until it went out and then climbed in next to her. His embrace tangled their bodies all the way to her feet. She didn't feel pinned, instead she felt liberated. She wanted to be with him and feel his arms and legs intertwined with hers.

"You haven't told me what you want me to do, what you like, or what feels good." His breath fluttered over her skin.

Her eyes were now adjusted to the almost pitch darkness. "I want to touch you the way you've touched me." She ran her fingers through his hair and then down over his cheek.
"Then I want you to make love to me. I want to be loved."

Biologist Shauni Miller, a beautiful as she is compassionate, harbors a secret that could alter her life forever. If she chooses to share it. Dr. Michael Black helps Shauni in her time of need, but sees more in the raven-haired temptress than she ever meant to reveal. He knows she’s hiding something, but then, so is he. Both Shauni and Michael have a role to play and decisions to make as a centuries-old prophecy has yet to be fulfilled. Only the fates know if they are meant to be together. Or if one of them has to die.

Excerpt

Oh, no you don’t,” she said with a shake of her finger. “I’m not being derailed again.”

What?” His gaze lingered on her shoulders and the curve of her neck. He wasn’t halfway finished with her, yet. “Yeah. You were going to tell me something.”

Now you’re catching on. And you were going to tell me how you found me out in those woods.” She looked at the large, golden lump of dog snoring in the foyer. “And don’t tell me it was all him.”

Michael felt his previous mellow aura zipping up tight. She’d relaxed him to the point of pre-catatonia then after one look at her, he’d been aroused again and gunning for round two.

Now he felt neither level of satisfaction. He was back to agonizing over how she would react to his dirty little secret. Hell, she might consider it a breach of privacy, the way he perceived what people were feeling, especially his ability to tune in to her so well. It was like he had a direct line to channel Shauni. All day. All night.

So he did what any fearless man would do. “You go first.”

Author Bio

Suza Kates can’t remember a time when she didn’t love books, but two particular memories stay with her. “As a young girl I picked up Little Women, read it straight through, and promptly turned to page one to start all over again. The next book I did that with was Mind Hunter by John Douglas, tales about profiling serial killers.”

Thus a twisted romantic was born.

Throughout her teenage and young adult years, she read everything from horror to historical romance yet never imagined writing anything of her own.

It was during a long, cold winter in a tiny apartment in Germany that Suza picked up a pen and notebook to entertain herself. “The apartment was so tiny, my bed also served as my living room couch. Plus, I shared it with three cats.”

Missing the warmth, the hospitality, and the food of the South, she wrote about those things with a huge dose of family thrown in. She says she still has a sweet spot in her heart for her first book, Southern Moon, but to date, she hasn’t revisited it for submission to her publisher.

Suza followed her heart to Savannah, Georgia, and it was the gorgeous city with its moss-covered oaks and secrets of history that inspired her to consider paranormal romance. “I had an idea about sisters and magic, so I went to work on the first book of The Savannah Coven Series, Whisper of a Witch. The series is still going strong, and I am grateful every day that I took a chance on paranormal romance, a genre I wasn’t very familiar with and had never actually read before writing it.”

Suza has since joined RWA and can’t say enough about this organization. “The education and support are unparalleled. I am so grateful to all of my fellow writers who have offered advice.”

Suza still resides in Savannah and is currently working on her next book. She considers it a perfect day when she can sit at the keyboard with coffee in her cup and one of her cats purring in her lap.

Review: Swap

Swap by H.K. Carlton

Total-E-Bound Publishing, 2012

Most of us have been there – the unrequited high school crush, the fantasy lover who still haunts our dreams, years after graduation. Usually that wish-he-had-been-the-special-someone disappears from our lives, and the unbearable need fades to a bittersweet memory. For Hailey Hollinger, heroine of H.K. Carlton's novella Swap, things aren't so easy. The object of her secret affection is Michael, her husband Brent's older brother. Michael has been married to Cheryl for eight years, and Hailey loves her own handsome, easy-going spouse, but the family relationship means Hailey has never really had the chance to get over Mike.

Common interests as well as circumstances tend to throw Hailey and Mike together.
--> They encourage one another's creativity. She's an author; he's a photographer, or at least would like to be, though his wife disparages his visions of making his living from his art. Hailey has always tried to hide her adulterous fantasies, but somehow, one night after a few drinks, Mike kisses her, and she can't help but respond.

Most of the book chronicles Hailey's and Mike's desperate attempts to remain faithful despite their mutual attraction. Neither of the main characters treats marriage casually. Both want to do the right thing. As time goes on, though, it becomes clear that their physical connection is merely a symptom of the deep emotional bond that connects them. Ultimately, they have no choice but to surrender to their passion and face the consequences.

Swap is a brave book, tackling as it does the uncomfortable topic of infidelity. A few years ago, this subject would have been taboo in a romance. Ms. Carlton does not whitewash the issue, but handles it with an admirable degree of honesty and realism. Hailey and Mike are sympathetic, likable characters. They really try to resist one another, although it's clear to the reader from an early stage that this is futile. In fact, their heroic efforts to “be good” raise the level of sexual tension, as they skirt the edges of adultery, drawing back time and time again from a precipitous fall. When, at last, they do give in, the accumulated frustration makes their coupling all the more intense.

Are two broken marriages incompatible with a happy ending? In Swap, Ms. Carlton avoids this problem by painting Brent as somewhat neglectful of his wife as he pursues his own interests. Meanwhile, Cheryl is portrayed as a sluttish, materialistic harpy. Neither of the jilted spouses really cares all that much when the respective spouses (Hailey and Mike) ask for divorces. In fact, Brent seems unsurprised, having noticed Hailey's attraction to his brother as far back as their wedding. I actually found Brent's reaction plausible. I wish that Cheryl had been an equally realistic character, with both positive and negative traits, rather than a rival-from-hell stereotype.

This is a minor quibble, however. Overall, Swap is full of heat and humanity, an impressive debut from a new author.

Sunday Snog: Raw Silk

I'm off traveling this week, but that doesn't mean you have to go without your weekly Snog. Today I've got a scene for you from Raw Silk.  Thai nobleman Somtow Rajchitraprasong has invited Kate to join him in an excursion on an antique rice barge, up the Chao Phraya River to the ancient capital of Ayuthaya. The long, slow boat ride offers plenty of opportunity for sexual shenanigans.

Don't forget to check out the other snogs today, over at Snog Central (Victoria's place).

The roar of an unmuffled motor roused them from their embrace. A narrow boat with a high, sharp prow raced passed them, leaving the barge rocking gently in its wake. ‘A long-tail boat, as they are called,’ said Somtow. ‘A modern adaptation of the traditional dragon boats that plied the river in past centuries.’ He kissed her again, lightly. ‘Personally, I prefer a more leisurely pace.’

Katherine stood up and leaned on the gunwale, taking in the myriad sights of the river. Stretches of verdant jungle alternated with rickety-looking wooden houses, perched on stilts at the river's edge. Women in sarongs squatted on the porches of these shacks, doing laundry or cooking on charcoal braziers. The delicious smell of frying garlic came to her across the water.

She saw the slick heads of children, heard their shrill cries as they splashed each other. A flat-bottomed boat piled high with bananas passed their barge, propelled by a long pole in the hands of an elderly woman in a conical straw hat.

Then she caught sight of tiled roofs and gilded spires through the palm trees. It was a wat, a Buddhist temple, inaccessible except by water. A winding stairway led from the complex of buildings down to the shore. At water level sat a small pavilion, with the typical peaked roof and upturned eaves. Katherine saw a young man draped in orange robes seated there, pensively watching the river flow by. The monk looked up as they passed. Katherine felt an ache in her chest. His beautiful, serious face, lit by the late-morning sun, was too perfect.

Immersed in the scenes on the riverside, Katherine started when she felt Somtow's hands on her hips. She twisted around to look at him.

‘No,’ he said, ‘please, just stay the way you are.’ She obeyed, turning back the river and leaning her elbows on the railing. She felt her skirt being drawn up, until it was around her waist. Next, her knickers were pulled down until they were at her ankles.

‘Perhaps I should just stop wearing any underwear,’ Katherine remarked with a little laugh. Gregory's face flashed briefly in her mind's eye; she pushed the thought of him away.

‘Perhaps that would be a good idea,’ said Somtow, completely serious. He helped her step out of the garment.

‘Now, spread your legs a bit, Katherine.’

‘What about the young pilot, and the girl who brought us the fruit?’

‘They know better than to bother us,’ said Somtow. He was kneeling behind her. She felt his tongue, tracing a line up the inside of her thigh.

‘In any case,’ he said after a moment, ‘you would not really mind if they were watching, would you?’ He lingered in the crease where her thigh swelled into the fullness of her buttocks. Katherine let out an involuntary sigh, and opened her legs a little wider.

She did not answer his question. Her imagination, though, supplied an image of the pilot and the serving girl, peaking out of the cabin at her bare backside, liberally anointed with her lover's saliva. The thought brought a strange, forbidden thrill. She imagined the pilot, unbuttoning the girl's top, while guiding her hand to his swollen cock. Somtow could see right through her, she realised, writhing as he swept his tongue along the length of her sex.

He licked her in broad strokes, front to back, starting at her clit and moving smoothly to the spot where her aching pussy-lips came together again. She arched her back to give him better access, and closed her eyes, savoring the fantastic sensations he was giving her. She felt incredibly wet, from his saliva and her own juices. Sunlight reflected from the water danced on her closed eyelids. The low rumble of the barge's motor set up a sympathetic vibration in her limbs. She felt the roar of the engine deep within her cunt.

Then came a new, a different feeling, like an electric shock. Somtow reached the back of her sex, but instead of beginning a new cycle, he set his tongue to work on her anus.

His hands were on her cheeks, pulling them apart. He circled around the tight knot several times, then poked his tongue into the ring of muscle, probing and teasing.

Embarrassment swept over Katherine, that he should be exploring such a private spot. She almost asked him to stop. At the same time, she was unbelievably excited. Every time he delved into her hind hole, her cunt was seized with a new spasm of pleasure. She grasped her nipples, squeezing hard, and pushed her hips back, silently begging him to search her more deeply.

Anything for Love

“I would do anything for love .
I'll be there until the final act
I would do anything for love.
I'll take a vow and seal a pact”

- Lyrics by Jim Steinman, performed by Meatloaf on Bat Out of Hell: II

This song has always touched me. I was humming it the other day (it came out of the blue, triggered perhaps by some memory of passion) and I realized that the sentiment cuts to the heart of romance. Anything for love. Against love, all other powers eventually fail. All other considerations take second place. Culture, family, history, even mortality – in romance any barrier can be overcome for the sake of love.

Then I began thinking about BDSM (as I often do...) and understood that the notion had special poignancy in the world of power exchange. A true submissive will do anything for love – anything to prove her devotion to her master – no matter how painful or humiliating or challenging.

And that led me to thinking about my novella, The Understudy. Sarah is unable to stop herself from loving Geoff, even though he seems to belong to another woman. He invites her to surrender and she cannot help answering his call. She'll do anything to please him, even if it means risking her career – or her heart.

I knocked on his door precisely at midnight. This time Geoffrey answered in person.

He wore a robe of some shimmery material that looked like silk, twilight blue woven with patterns of gold. His feet were bare. His eyes were hungry.

Come in, little one,” he purred, stepping aside so that I could pass. “You’re very punctual. I gather you’ve learnt your lesson.”

Yes, sir.” I didn’t know what else to say. I stood in the middle of the room, eyes cast down and hands clasped in front of me like a schoolgirl about to recite. I couldn’t bear to look at him; I was sure I’d lose control and do something without his permission.

So you don’t want another spanking?” he laughed.

A wave of heat sizzled through me like summer lightning. I wanted his hands on my flesh—I didn’t care about the pain.

It’s your choice,” I whispered. “Spank me if you want to.”

Not tonight,” he replied. “For tonight, I have other ideas. Look at me, Sarah.”

I raised my head. He snared me with his eyes and wouldn’t release me. As usual under his scrutiny, my nipples tightened and my pussy wept. He seated himself on the sofa, still holding my gaze, and crossed one leg over the other.

Now strip.”

Shame overwhelmed me. I didn’t understand it. I’d been naked in his presence the night before last. He had explored my body, inside and out. Why was I blushing and sweating now?

I wanted to obey him, to please him. Truly I did. Yet I couldn’t move.

Sarah?” he queried, impatience evident in his voice. “Is there a problem?”

Suddenly I understood my reluctance. It was all about her. I knew that I couldn’t compete. I glanced around, searching for her photo, not seeing it anywhere. Perhaps it was in the bedroom, where he could fall asleep gazing upon her beauty…

Sarah!” His rebuke brought my eyes back to his. “If you’re not going to follow instructions, you might as well go back to your room.”

Oh no! Please don’t send me away. I’m sorry.”

I rushed to unbutton my blouse, not caring whether I was graceful or seductive. His scowl relaxed as I bared my breasts, my eager nipples all too obviously erect. His lips shaped themselves into a half-smile as I yanked off my skirt and tossed it away. That was all it took. I hadn’t worn a bra or panties for two days.

Good girl. Why did you hesitate?”

I—um—I didn’t know whether you’d like me. Whether I’d please you. My breasts are so small…”

Your breasts are just fine. Anyway, it’s not your place to worry about such things. When I tell you to do something, just do it. Don’t question, obey.”
