I’m excited to announce that next Monday, August 30th, I’ll be releasing a new, indie-published edition of my multi-genre erotic mashup romance Rajasthani Moon.

It took me forever to find cover images that I felt did the book justice. I’m pretty happy with the results, though. What do you think? Leave me a comment telling my your opinion and you could win a FREE copy before the book even hits the virtual shelves!

Rajasthani Moon: Steampunk Shifter BDSM Romance

52,600 words, six-plus flames!

Rajasthani Moon cover

Neither kink nor curse can stop a woman on a mission.

A bandit prince cursed into beast form under the full moon.

A brilliant but sadistic Rajah whose robotic sex toys mingle torture and delight.

A voluptuous spy on a mission from Her Majesty, tasked with discovering Rajasthan’s secrets.

She has never faced such a challenge.

When Rajasthan refuses to remit its taxes, the Queen calls on her most lethal and seductive secret agent, Cecily Harrowsmith. Cecily expects to have little difficulty persuading the rebellious Rajah to submit once more to the Empire. Instead, she is the one forced to submit – to endure unprecedented extremes of pleasure and pain.

Kidnapped by the ruler's half-brother Pratan and delivered into the hands of the handsome but depraved Rajah Amir, she soon finds herself fighting against her own lascivious nature as much as the schemes of her captors. Her sympathy for the moon-cursed wolf-man Pratan only complicates her situation. Cecily has never failed to complete an assignment, but now she risks betrayal by both her body and her heart.

Note: This book was previously published by Totally Bound. It has been re-edited, revised and updated for this release.

Suffering for my art? -- #AmWriting #Stereotypes #Erotica

Discarded Words

Image by Steve Johnson from Pixabay

There’s a popular belief that we writers are tortured souls. A bit of Googling will produce long lists of authors who committed suicide. Meanwhile, the process of writing is often portrayed as a painful, never-ending struggle to capture elusive ideas in the imperfect medium of language. Who is unfamiliar with the portrait of the author hunched over his scribbles in the chill hours between midnight and dawn, flanked by a smoldering cigarette on one side, the dregs of a whiskey on the other, the floor strewn the crumpled remains of discarded pages?

Aldous Huxley wrote: “Perhaps it's good for one to suffer. Can an artist do anything if he's happy? Would he ever want to do anything? What is art, after all, but a protest against the horrible inclemency of life?”

I really wonder about this stereotype, though. Most of the writers I know seem to be moderately stable and well-adjusted individuals. Of course they’re sometimes stressed by deadlines or frustrated by the difficulty of getting their ideas out of their heads and onto the page. Like me, though, they seem to write mostly for the joy of it, the thrill that comes from creating characters and their stories and sharing them with the world.

A snide reader might remark that erotica doesn’t count, because it’s not “art”. I’m not going to split hairs trying to specify what does and does not qualify for that label. That would be an endless argument (akin to the bottomless pit of distinguishing “erotica” from “porn”). I choose to categorize my work as art. I believe my tales reflect both creative inspiration and literary craft. The fact that I’m drawn to exploring the many varieties of desire, as opposed to other themes, is not relevant to either the quality or the value of what I create.

Do I sound defensive? It’s true that the world offers us erotica authors very little in the way of respect. But honestly, I don’t care most of the time. I love writing. I need to write, almost as much as I need to breathe. When I’m away from my WIP for too long, my spirit sags. I miss the magic of spinning fiction.

I’m proud of my writing, too. I’ve had a fair bit of success in my nearly seven decades. I have a lengthy professional resume. Still, my books (not listed on the official CV of course!) may well be my most prized personal accomplishments – even though most people in my life aren’t even aware they exist.

During the past month I haven’t been able to write, due to an injury. In some ways, that has been the most difficult part of the experience. When I couldn’t write – not just my WIP but also emails, blog posts, book reviews and critiques – I felt terribly cut off from my community of authors as well as from my creative self. I had to struggle to remember, and hold on to, the joy of being a writer.

Now I am finally starting to regain the ability for two-handed typing. I’m eager to get back to my poor, temporarily abandoned novel. Indeed, I wrote a page or so last weekend. Alas, this wasn’t easy. My right arm is healing, but typing tends to increase the pain quite a lot.

So at present, I am in fact temporarily suffering for my art. And I’m willing to do that, for now, in return for the excitement of feeling the story take shape and the satisfaction of seeing the words unfurl on the page.

Wulf Tales of the Chosen cover

Thank you for letting me hang out with your readers! I'm excited to have a re-release of Alitus, Tales of the Chosen. It's Book Two in the series, and happily for readers, Book One is permafree. Wulf is available on all retailers.

About Wulf - Tales of the Chosen

This book is permafree on all retailers. Grab Wulf and begin your journey...

With his career threatened and his life at risk, Wulf must seek help from the one man he swore he would never trust again, Luc Saint-Cyr, a.k.a. the Harbinger. An enigmatic man whose legendary power makes him the most feared person in the empire.

For the Harbinger, saving Wulf is a simple matter of asserting his will. Luc's ties to the Thieves' Guild grant him access anywhere. He can protect Wulf without difficulty.

Until Luc brings Wulf home for safekeeping, and discovers the real reason for the threats. Protecting Wulf has not only put his and Wulf's lives at risk, it's also risked the life of Luc's teenaged son.

This is beyond protection, now. To the Harbinger, this is personal...

Excerpt

Luc introduced Wulf to the captain, ordered dinner for the two of them, and then took Wulf to his private stateroom. It held a desk with a built-in bench seat and an oversized bed with a pull down mesh covering that protected sleepers during low gravity.

Finally alone with the man he'd craved all day, Luc shut and locked the door, and leaned against it.

Wulf ambled around, trailing his fingers across the built-in dresser. Dressed in conservative business clothes, he fit in the room as if he'd been born to be there. He sat on the end of the bed and gazed back at Luc with an appealing mix of shyness and come-hither seduction.

Luc shrugged out of his jacket. "Is the room cool enough for you?"

"Mmm hmm."

"Good." He started opening his shirt. "We'll begin with a shower."

Wulf blushed, as Luc expected he would.

"Time for you to tell me all about that fantasy you confessed to having."

He cleared his throat. "Nothing much to tell."

Luc chuckled. "Oh no. You're not getting out of it. I want every delicious detail."

Wulf crossed to him, and rested both hands on his chest. "We can do what you want first."

"Absolutely not." Bracing his feet wider apart, he drew Wulf between them and up against his body. "I want to hear what turns you on." He unfastened the top button of Wulf's white shirt. "I'm going to do everything to you that you dreamed about."

A small sound of pleasure left Wulf's mouth as he leaned up and kissed him. Luc drew him close, sliding down the planes of Wulf's firm body to his hard ass. He lifted his hands and held Wulf's face between them as he took his mouth in a drugging kiss. Lips still connected, he traded places with him and pushed Wulf up against the door.

Luc licked Wulf's mouth, sweeping his tongue inside to taste every part. He ripped open his lover's shirt, shoved it back off his shoulders and down his arms.

Wulf let it fall to the floor and reached over his head and pulled off the T-shirt.

"Don't move, Wulf. Let me look at you." All that tawny bared skin, his chest rising and falling... "You are luscious. Masculine. I love that about you." Luc ran his hands across Wulf's chest. His skin felt cool, the texture perfect, his muscles hard. "I never visualized you as smooth. In most of your modeling shots, you're not."

Wulf lifted his whiskey-colored gaze. "I shaved it the other night when I got drunk." He gave a half-hearted laugh. "I have no idea what possessed me to do such a thing."

"I'm glad you did. I like you this way. Keep it, love." He bent and ran his tongue across one brown nipple, smiling when Wulf shivered and tossed back his head. "You like that. Good. So do I." He swirled his tongue across it again.

As the battle rages... #HistoricalRomance #WWII #Giveaway @ChrisKarlsen1

The Ack Ack Girl cover
Blurb

It’s 1941 and the German war machine has defeated all of Europe except England. In an effort to force a surrender, the German Luftwaffe is bombing villages and cities the length of the country. As the battle rages, Britain is in desperate need to put more pilots in the air.

To free up more men a new unit is formed: The Ack Ack Girls. Teams of courageous young women will now fight in anti-aircraft stations. Excited to be part of the effort, Ava Armstrong has volunteered for one of the special teams. Her unit just happens to be located near an RAF airfield teaming with pilots. Sparks fly, and not just from artillery, when Ava crosses paths with the highly decorated and handsome Royal Airforce pilot, Chris Fairfield.

Excerpt

Ava put her new uniform bits away. Someone had left a flyer for a pub called the Two Roses in her stand. Skimming it as she headed toward the mess she ran into a solid body.

Have a care, watch where you walk. You nearly trod on my foot.”

Startled, Ava looked up into a square-jawed, dark-haired pilot with a dimpled chin, who could pass for Cary Grant’s younger brother. Distracted, apologizing escaped her.

I’d say I accept your apology had I received one.”

Sorry, I was reading this flyer.”

He eyed her up and down. “You’re part of the new anti-aircraft branch of the ATS.”

I am.”

He eyed the length of her again but this time a snort accompanied his comment. “I hope you can see planes better than tall men inches from you.”

The cheek of the man! She wasn’t about to let that comment slide. “Had you considered stepping out of the way when you saw me coming?”

No, why should I? I was in this spot first. You’re lucky I don’t ask the captain to have your lot stop to salute us.”

What cheek. Pardon me, I’m hungry and you’re boring.” Ava tucked the flyer into her jacket pocket and whispered, “Wanker” as she pushed past.

The wanker hummed White Cliffs of Dover and got in line behind her.

Lieutenant Fairfield, it’s good to see you here. Finally on the mend?” the blonde, ATS corporal serving the food asked the wanker in a sugary voice.

I still have the tail-end of the nasty pneumonia cough hanging on, but I believe I’ll be ready to return to my squadron this week.”

We might see you around before then. When we have a bit of time to ourselves, my friends and I go for a pint at the Two Roses pub in the village. Come by and I’ll buy you a pint.”

If they don’t send me off the same day as my orders come through, I’ll do that but I’ll buy.”

Ava made a note to ask what village they were near. No one had indicated so far and she was curious. She didn’t dare ask in front of the arrogant wanker Fairfield. He already thought her a clumsy goose. No need letting him think she was lost too.

She moved down the food line, pausing for a second trying to decide if she wanted the soupy mashed potatoes. Then a long, blue wool uniformed arm reached over her to take a roll, his tray clinking against hers.

Excuse my reach but you’re taking too long and I’m ravenous.”

You really are a wanker.”

You wound me.” He pressed his hand to his chest. “At least I’m not a dawdler.”

He walked away with his roll before she could offer a comeback.

She’s in love with a myth come to life... #ParanormalRomance #Guatemala #MFRWHooks

The Feathered Serpent god

Happy Wednesday and welcome to the Marketing for Romance Authors Book Hooks blog hop!

Today I’m featuring one of my earliest paranormal romances, my novella Serpent’s Kiss. When I wrote this book, way back in 2009, shifters were all the rage. (Well, I guess they still are...) With my usual contrariness, I wanted to create a truly different shape shifter character. My hero Jorge Pélikal is an incarnation of the Meso-American Feather Serpent god sometimes known as Quetzlcoatl.

Definitely different, right? ;^)

My heroine Dr. Elena Navarro runs a remote clinic in the Guatemalan highlands, trying to atone for her father’s tortures and murders of local people as the right hand man of a brutal dictator. She’s looking for peace, not love – but she is the destined mate of a nearly invincible god.

For today’s hook, I’m sharing the start of the book, where Jorge first stumbles into Elena’s life.

Blurb

She’s in love with a myth come to life

From the first, Dr. Elena Navarro senses that the mortally wounded man she discovers outside her rural clinic is no ordinary mortal. With his chest ripped open, Jorge Pélikal nevertheless demonstrates unnatural strength and power.

Elena is irresistibly attracted to Jorge, although he warns her their coupling could throw open the gates of chaos. As they grow closer, she comes to understand Jorge is a supernatural player in a cosmic drama that will determine the fate of the earth and of mankind – and that even if he triumphs in his apocalyptic struggle with his nemesis, she may lose him forever.

Reader Advisory: This book is not recommended for readers with a snake phobia.

The Hook

Help me…please…”

The moan was barely audible above the chatter of the birds greeting the dusk. Elena paused, key half-turned in the padlock, listening closely.

Por favor…”

This time, she could hear the pain in the man’s voice. The sound came from the mass of tangled vegetation framing the gate of the clinic. She stuck the lock in her jeans pocket and tried to part the curtain of lianas that cloaked the young fir tree. The tough vines resisted, but she finally managed to tear them apart, exposing a clearing created by the tree’s drooping branches.

He lay on his back on the damp ground, gasping for breath. A doctor first, Elena immediately noted the terrible wound that ripped across his chest. The rough trousers that were his only garment were black with blood.

She crawled into the concealed space and knelt beside him, examining the awful gash more closely. The flow had begun to clot, but if she moved him, the bleeding might start again.

Aye…” The man gave an inarticulate groan and struggled weakly to rise.

No! Stay still!” Elena spoke to him in Spanish, hoping he’d understand. “You mustn’t move. You’re seriously hurt. Stay here quietly. I’ll get some of the village men to carry you to the infirmary.”

He grabbed her shirt, holding her back. His strength was surprising. “No, please! Don’t bring anyone. No one must know…”

Then how will we get you inside?”

I–I can walk.”

With your chest torn open like that? And all the blood that you’ve lost?”

I can do it. I am strong, still.”

No, it’s impossible. Just wait. I’ll be back in five minutes.”

If you return with anyone else, I will be gone.” For the first time since she had heard his plea, Elena the woman took over from Elena the physician. She searched his face, noting the smooth, dusky skin, the high cheek bones, the proud Mayan nose, the full lips set in a stubborn line. His eyes gleamed in the shadows beneath the boughs, challenging her. A little chill ran up her spine. Who was this stranger, so badly hurt and yet so forceful? She didn’t doubt he would do as he said. She didn’t dare take responsibility for driving him away.

All right, then. At least let me bind up your chest to hold the edges of the wound together.” She shrugged off her long-sleeved shirt, trying to ignore the man’s dark eyes following her every move. She pushed away her momentary embarrassment. It didn’t matter that he saw her wearing nothing but a bra. She was a doctor, and his life was in danger.

Can you sit up? Careful, now. Take it slow.” She supported him with one arm around his shoulders as he worked his way into a sitting position. She could tell from the grim set of his mouth that he was in pain, but he made no sound.

Lean on me, and I’ll try to tie this around you.” He slumped against her, his right shoulder supported by her left. He was warm, clearly not in shock yet. That was good. In fact, his bare skin felt hot against hers—he was probably running a fever. Not so promising. She had to get him inside.

There was not much she could do. She gently positioned the back of her shirt against his chest, over the oozing tear in his flesh. Then she tied the arms of the shirt behind his back, tightly enough, she hoped, to apply some pressure. She couldn’t help noticing his solidly muscled torso. This was a man accustomed to hard labour. Yet there was something about his speech that made her doubt he was a peasant.

How does that feel? Is it painful?”

It’s better. Thank you.”

Don’t thank me yet. It’s twenty meters from here to the infirmary. How are we going to get you on your feet?”

I can do it. You back out of the clearing. I’ll follow.”

They couldn’t exit standing anyway. She decided to obey and worked her way between the vines, back onto the dirt path. As she watched anxiously, the stranger emerged on his hands and knees. Slowly, while she marveled at his strength, he brought himself into a crouch and finally, to his full height.

He was tall for a native, half a head taller than Elena, despite her Swedish mother and her affluent American upbringing. His long black hair was tangled and knotted, studded with leaves and clumps of dirt. She guessed that when it was clean it would reach halfway down his back. He was filthy and drenched with his own blood—Elena could see the jagged diagonal line where it was seeping through her white shirt—but still, he was magnificent. Regal.

A past far darker than she’d realized … #HistoricalFantasy #Romance #Scotland #Giveaway

The Secret of Drulea Cottage cover
Blurb

Briony Fairborn, a midwife in eighteenth-century Scotland, comes from a family shrouded in scandal. Left with only one friend after her mother’s death, she has little hope of gaining any others, let alone finding a husband. Instead, Briony tries to live a quiet life and avoid her neighbors’ ridicule as much as possible.

But things in Everton take a drastic turn when a storm brings foreigners to the village docks.

On the night Santiago Mendes arrives, he comes with a broken ship, a broken leg, and a broken spirit that Briony finds herself profoundly drawn to. Her scarred heart slowly starts to open, and although Briony suspects he may be hiding something, she cannot help but dream of the possibility of love.

That is, until another stranger appears in town, intent on repaying a childhood debt. A dangerously handsome stranger who shows Briony that she’s even more different than she could have imagined. And that her past is far darker than she realized.

Magic, romance, and political intrigue collide as the secrets surrounding one Scottish woman begin to unravel. Secrets that she may not be ready to face.

Excerpt

Screams drew Briony from her state of shock. They pierced the darkness as terribly as the lightning hitting the ground.

Except ’tis na just hitting the ground anymore! She gasped at the sight of flames rising from the town below. Her neighbors were flying through the streets in a panic, and Briony could see why: the tailor shop and the McGuffs’ house were alight!

Fergus! Briony forgot about Niall and charged down the hill with nary a care for her own well-being. All she could focus on was the thought of the little boy potentially trapped and scared. She reached the burning house and stepped inside. “Hello! Fergus?! Is anyone in here?”

Most of the fire was above her, hungrily swallowing the thatched roof. The smoke was so thick within the confined space that Briony struggled to breathe. Only a few licks of flame had reached the floor, and they were quickly spreading toward the McGuffs’ table.

H-Here!” came a voice. Whoever it belonged to was too hoarse to identify. Briony covered her mouth with her hand and made her way forward, edging around the blazing table.

Briony hastened into the back bedroom, her eyes flicking between the open window and two beds before landing on their target: Penelope McGuff. The woman was on the ground, facedown. The rest of the family was nowhere in sight.

Mistress McGuff!” Briony dropped to her knees and grabbed the woman’s hand, but Penelope didn’t stir.

CRASH!

You’re tempting me – #BDSM #EroticRomance #Giveaway

Held for the Stud cover

Blurb

A man determined to have his way. A woman in need of taming. The battle begins.

One look at the big, half-wild stallion and Asha vows to ride him. One look at the beautiful stranger sneaking toward his newly acquired stud and Banner vows to teach her that he’s in control.

Banner is a soldier, a man who has experienced little beyond weapons and war, but he and the men he’s responsible for need more than conflict. Otherwise they’ll lose what’s left of their humanity. He turns abandoned ranch land into an escape and offers it to battle-weary fighters.

Nothing will stand in his way, especially not the slight, determined woman who insists that only she can handle Koko. He won’t allow her to risk her life. When she disobeys, he disciplines her. Repeatedly.

Asha loathes the man who brought her, naked, to her knees, but her body isn’t listening.

Reader advisory: This book includes references to sexual harrassment, PTSD and war injury. There are elements of corporal punishment and dubious/ambiguous consent.

Excerpt

What I wouldn’t give to ride him.

His energy and power everywhere, me becoming part of him. Heat, endless heat. Wild all the way to his core. His body in absolute control. No fear or doubt. Potent.

Even with her heart’s jagged pace warning she might be having a stroke, Asha continued to stare at the prime example of maleness. She’d seen unwavering confidence before. Hell, she was pretty damn confident herself. But this…

Not wanting to miss a moment of this rare experience, she willed herself not to blink. The object of her admiration was far enough away that she doubted the stallion was aware of her, but even if he locked his dark eyes on her, she’d go on staring open-mouthed at him. She had no choice.

You don’t have to chase after them, she silently told the stud. Females will always do whatever they think it takes to convince you to breed with them. You can be selective. You assess and most times reject because you know there’ll always be another. Only the best will do.

Sweat pooled at the base of her throat while another kind of moisture soaked her panties’ crotch. From first glance she’d known she couldn’t be objective about him, but she hadn’t realized her reaction would be so primal.

She’d caress that sleek dark flesh, run her fingers through long, coarse hair, climb onto his back and ride him until there was nothing left of both of them.

As if reading her thoughts, the stallion stared at her, a front hoof furiously attacking the ground. He wasn’t quite coal black, but close, with a tail that swept the ground and a rich, thick mane. Do it, he seemed to say. Take the chance.

You’re tempting me.”

He whinnied, the sound sharp. His muscles repeatedly knotted as he continued his attack.

There’s a mare in heat somewhere, isn’t there? You sense her. Maybe you smell her.”

Barely aware of what she was doing, Asha jammed her hands in her jeans’ back pockets. The gesture tightened the fabric against her crotch and brought her attention back to herself. “Is that it? You’re primed for breeding? You can’t think of anything else. Hot blood runs through you all the time, keeping you keyed-up. You’d service an entire herd if they let you.”

Head high and thick neck arched, the stallion pranced closer. There was a wooden fence between them, but even if it hadn’t been there, she wouldn’t have shied away.

You don’t intimidate me. That’s because it’s possible I know more about how you’ll behave than you do. I respect you, but you need to do the same.”

The animal stopped and again beat at the ground. He shook his head, eyes showing more white now.

You want to run, don’t you? Gallop without this corral hemming you in. Work off some of that energy. Believe me, I get it.”

Head now cocked to the side, the stallion seemed to be considering her proclamation. She took him to be a little over sixteen hands high and probably thirteen hundred pounds, the majority of it muscle. The way his coat shone, people who didn’t know horses would assume he got a lot of grooming, but his hooves were ragged, his mane and tail tangled.

I’m guessing your coloring has a lot to do with why you were picked for stud service. At least I’m pretty sure that’s what’s going on. That’s why you aren’t out with the herd.”

Frowning, she fingered the lock on the corral door. She’d been looking for him since she’d ventured onto the mysterious place known as Escape, her attention initially drawn to whistles and thuds. Thanks to her career, she’d concluded she was listening to an agitated or aroused horse. The sounds and air of energy had drawn her magnet-like to this remote section of the acreage.

It probably doesn’t matter to you, but I’ve been listening to you for a while, feeling you in my muscles and bones, letting you command me.”

Command. Yes, that was what it had been. Like a starving woman with the scent of something on a barbeque filling her senses, she’d made the decision to let instinct have its way with her. She had no business being here, but who would run her off? At what she understood was over a hundred acres, chances were she was the only human on most of them. It hadn’t been called Escape for long. A lot of mystery surrounded who owned it. She figured farmers or ranchers acquired the land which was dotted with a couple of barns and a sprawling older house.

Not that she should give a damn.

Command.

Pushing her hair out of her eyes—someday, maybe, she’d figure out how to contain the auburn mass that reached the middle of her back—she gripped the top board and gave the stud her full attention. She wanted him, to own and ride him, to love him and earn his respect. She’d slip a rope around his muscled neck and guide him to a tree stump or boulder. Using his mane for leverage, she’d half haul and half boost herself onto him. She’d settle her crotch on his broad back and tighten her thighs against testosterone-filled muscles. She’d weave fingers made strong from a lifetime of physical labor into his mane, lean forward and whisper in his alert ears.

Run for me. Race the wind. Gather your legs under you and take us over the fence. Free both of us. Gallop until your lungs heave and I’m hoarse from screaming my delight.”

Her breath snagged, her cheeks burned and her muscles bunched in reaction to what she was certain the stallion was capable of. Her already charged pussy got into the act, muscles clamping down. Her nipples hardened and she gave up trying to close her mouth.

As if reading her thoughts, the stallion pranced even closer. He was all sexual energy, every inch of him leaving no doubt that he’d been created to excel at one task. She’d seen more stallions than most people, but there was something outstanding about this creature.

You’re making me crazy.”

She should ask herself if she really wanted to confide in the stallion, but right now it was too much effort. She started to drop to her knees in preparation for wriggling under the fence when a shiver of sensation along her spine stopped her. Was someone watching? Assessing and judging her? She looked left, right, behind her and as far into the distance as she could. She didn’t see anything worthy of alarm but she’d been in enough precarious situations that she knew better than to dismiss what her nerves were trying to tell her.

To hell with it! Touching the stallion was more important.

Breathing quickly, she wriggled under the fence. As she straightened, the stallion pranced back.

You can’t be afraid of me. I know it isn’t that. You just have trouble containing all that energy. God, but you’re magnificent. Devil and angel in one package.”

Talking took too much effort so she concentrated on wiping dirt off her jeans. Thinking she probably wouldn’t see anyone today, she hadn’t bothered with a bra, but then she rarely wore one. She was a C-cup, which meant people would notice, but bras weren’t worth the expense when being true to herself meant so much. Her untethered breasts and hard-as-hell nipples were clearly visible under the wear-softened cotton T-shirt.

If she were one for introspection this would be when she’d question why she’d decided to spend her day off exploring Escape. However, between being more than a little worn down from the long hike and her reaction to the stallion, she wasn’t sure she knew what she was thinking.

Do you know what the phrase sex appeal means?” she asked the stallion. “What a woman is trying to get a man to understand when she tells him she’s turned on? Going by my less-than-extensive experience, I’m not an expert when it comes to putting out the right vibes.”

She clamped down on a chuckle. Her suspicion that some man might have his eye on her right now had twisted her thinking a bit. So she wasn’t as experienced regarding the opposite sex as she’d like people to believe. That was her business and had nothing to do with the moment. If a man was watching, he could come to his own conclusion. It wasn’t as if she had to have anything to do with him.

She again slid her hands into her back pockets. Fabric tightened.

I don’t know if I’m going to sleep tonight. I’m also not sure I care. Damn, but you’re beautiful. One of a kind.” She paused as a surge of something hot ran through her. “Right now, I’d give anything to be a mare.”

As if agreeing with her, the big, black, glistening creature stretched out a densely muscled neck. Holding her breath, she dragged her right hand out of her pocket and extended it toward him. Warm, moist air caressed her fingers and sent a fresh frisson of excitement into her.

Will you let me ride you? I didn’t bring a bridle or saddle, but I’ve ridden bareback more times than otherwise. As for a bridle…”

The thought of pushing a metal bar between those white teeth made her shudder. She didn’t want to command him in any way. As long as she was astride him, he’d be in control. She’d trust him not to throw her, to know she preferred a canter over a trot and a gallop over everything else. Together they’d run like the proverbial wind and win every race.

The stud drew her fingers into his mouth. She embraced the moment.

I know you. I think in some regard I always have.”

Tears she didn’t know she had in her burned. Blinking repeatedly, she struggled not to let them loose. When they continued to threaten, she withdrew her damp hand and stroked his neck where muscles and veins pulsed. Maybe she could go from standing flat-footed to being astride him on will alone. She tightened a hand around the rough mane and crouched in preparation for springing. Nothing else mattered. In one or two seconds she’d—

Don’t even think it!”

About the Author

What prompts a mild-mannered mostly law abiding woman to write erotica and erotic romance, a lot revolving around BDSM and capture/bondage? Is it the complex issue of taking or giving up control?

Vonna Harper doesn't know and she has given up trying to find the answer. It's enough that many readers are drawn to what some call the dark side. All she asks is that readers understand she writes fiction--a brand of fiction she finds fascinating.

Vonna has lost count of the number of books, novellas, and short stories she's written. What she has no doubt of, it's a hell of a ride.
