All’s fair in love and business.

Ruby Maxwell Chen, lovely and ruthless CEO of a huge British business empire, is used to getting her way. When she encounters the strangely charismatic American entrepreneur Rick Martell, though, she wonders if she hasn't finally met her match.

From the trendy clubs of London to the Hollywood Hills, Ruby and Rick compete for ownership of a strategic factory in Malaysia. Neither has any qualms about using sexual wiles to smooth the path to success. Neither anticipates that their mutual attraction will turn into something far more intense and difficult to control.

As their struggle for dominance escalates, they draw their employees and associates into their outrageous power games. The stakes could scarcely be higher, as Ruby and Rick play for the ultimate prize: a night of total physical surrender.

Well, Ruby. How did it go?”

I smile in a manner that I hope is neutral. “I’m not sure yet. I think I’m making progress. Baktar and I have another meeting tomorrow morning, if you don’t mind lending me your office again.” I’m not ready to parade my triumph before him. Not until it’s sealed with Baktar’s signature.

No problem. Make yourself at home. I don’t spend much time here lately. Most days, I’m out at the Etymologics plant in Burbank.” He seems relaxed and at ease with me. There’s no sense of tension or conflict in him. No sense of arousal, either. Frustration washes through me, sharpening my own desire.

He saunters over to the bookcase, pulls out one of the sailing books, and leafs through it. His movements are fluid and full of energy. I burn, wanting to reach for him, to feel those wiry arms around me, to feel that energy surge through me.

We’re at a critical phase in our design work,” he says finally. “I have little time for anything else. For instance, I never get a chance to sail anymore.”

You sail?” I ask, and cringe inwardly at the inanity of this response. Of course I knew about that, and his other hobbies, from his dossier as well as his bookshelves. Then I forgive myself. At the moment, it takes all my will to remain coherent.

Oh yes!” His face floods with joy. He looks younger. “I’ve got a thirty-six foot Eastern Star sailing yacht, sloop-rigged, down in Marina del Rey. She’s a sweet craft, let me tell you. But I haven’t had her out for more than six months.”

That’s a pity,” I murmur, desperately trying to hold up my end of the conversation.

Do you enjoy sailing?” Rick asks suddenly. “I’d expect that you’d love it. The speed bubbling through your blood like champagne. The wind tearing at your clothes. Maybe you’re just the excuse I need. If you’re interested, we could take her out on Saturday and make a run over to Catalina Island.”

I don’t know if I’ll still be here on Saturday.”
Oh?” He shoots a sharp look in my direction. “You expect to have Baktar in your pocket by then?”

Perhaps. In any case, I have meetings in Geneva in the middle of next week that I have to prepare for. You’re not my only business, you know. In fact, you’re just a minor distraction.”

I sound testy and annoyed. Rick laughs. “Lighten up, Ruby. You’re much less attractive when you’re bitchy.” A blush races across my cheeks. There’s nothing I can say.

Anyway, we can see about the sailing trip. The reason I’m came down was to ask if you wanted to come with me to Burbank, to my plant, this afternoon. I thought that you might find it interesting to see our operation.”

I’m both terrified and drawn to the notion: sitting beside him in the car, spending the afternoon together. “I had suggested to Margaret that she and I go walking on the beach this afternoon.” My voice has the tiniest quaver at the mention of my assistant.

Rick’s grin grows broader. “I’m sure that Margaret can amuse herself while we’re gone. Besides, we’ll probably be back well before sundown. You can take your walk then.”

I am tempted to take him up on his offer. I am curious about his company, naturally. After all, he might become a client if I succeed in buying the fab. And though it is agony to be in his presence, it’s a rather pleasant agony.

If I go with you, do you promise not to try any of your tricks?”

He looks at me with well-feigned innocence. “Tricks? What do you mean?”

You know very well what I mean. This is a business trip and you are a business associate. That’s all. That’s the way I want it.”

He searches my face, thoughtfully. “Is that really what you want, Ruby? Well, whatever you say. But if I make this promise, you have to promise something in return.”

My heart is pounding. What will he ask of me? “Yes, what is that?”

Promise me you’ll stop being so suspicious. That you’ll trust me, or at least give me the benefit of the doubt.”

I laugh at his earnestness. “I’ll give it a try. But you’ll have to prove yourself worthy of my trust.”

It’s a deal,” he says with a smile. “Let’s shake on it.” When his palm presses mine, the flames rise again. My vision blurs, my head swims. His presence is like a drug. I wonder, for the millionth time, what are the real terms of my bargain with Rick Martell.

The Real McCoy by Sabrina York

When Crystal Wilson gets roped into a wild, girls-only weekend at a rowdy “stud” ranch, the last thing she wants to do is tangle with a bunch of half-naked men pretending to be cowboys. But when she meets Ford McCoy, she can’t help but be attracted to his dark, dominant, gruff appeal.

What she doesn’t know is that Ford isn’t a stripper. He’s her friend’s overprotective brother, there to make sure his little sister doesn’t get into any trouble. She’s surprised at the passion that flares between them. In fact, what she has with Ford might just be what she’s been looking for all along.

It’s a pity the sexy rancher isn’t in the market for a city girl.

Excerpt

She shouldn’t have taken the shot.

For God’s sake, what had she been thinking? She’d been on a low-carb, low-calorie diet—with no alcohol—for a month. Not because Blaine had called her fat. That had nothing to do with it. She just wanted… She just wanted to do it for herself. Yeah.

It wasn’t like he was coming back or anything. And it wasn’t like she’d let him.

But it would be awesome to run into him somewhere, say the bank or the coffee shop or that bar on Grill Street, looking like a vixen. She only had ten pounds to go to hit vixen weight. It was a helluva ten pounds. They didn’t seem to want to budge.

And damn, she really wanted something to eat.

And damn, the tequila had hit her hard.

So hard she’d left the weekend kickoff party—although, to be honest, she’d wanted to leave since the pumping music and the grinding bodies and the strobing lights were starting to make her eyelid twitch. As down-home country as the bedrooms were at this ranch-slash-resort, they sure knew how to throw a bacchanal at night.

It was pleasanter out here behind the house, staring up at the stars and enjoying the kiss of a soft breeze. There were no sounds but the rustle of the leaves in the trees, the crickets and the occasional croak of a frog.

Her head hardly spun at all.

She leaned back and closed her eyes and imagined how amazing it would feel to be twenty-one again and interested in those kinds of men. To rub against a hard chest and feel his thickly muscled arms hold her close.

But none of those boys had ignited a flicker of interest in her. They’d all been rubbed smooth. Although several of them, and one in particular, had made it clear he wanted to dance for her.

It was a damn shame.

It would have been fun.

What kind of man would she want, if she wanted a man? Tall, for sure. Broad. Hard. Rough. Maybe a little wicked twinkle in his eye.

A door slammed to her right and her eyes flew open. She blinked as a man strode toward her through the shadows. Her heart lurched and the breath caught in her throat. Yes, her heart whispered. Yes. That was the kind of man she wanted.

He was big, and broad and roped with muscle. His stride was sure, determined and powerful. He wore boots that kicked up dust with every step, and chaps and even a Stetson. He had high cheekbones and a well-formed brow. His square chin was spattered with a dark shadow. His shirt was buttoned.

He looked like a real cowboy.

He looked like a man.

This guy could dance for her. No problem. She’d love to have him rub himself all over her—

His steps stalled as he caught sight of her.

Well, hey there, cowboy,” she purred. It was probably the tequila purring, but he didn’t seem to care. He peered into the shadows.

She did him the favor of moving into the light. She liked that his nostrils flared and his throat worked. He touched the brim of his hat. “Ma’am.”

Ooh. Ma’am.

Sexy. This stripper knew how to play a role.

You’re late,” she said.

He blinked. “Late?”

The party’s already started.” She sidled up to him—again, the tequila; normally she would never sidle up to anybody—and put her hand on his chest. The muscles rippled in response and something inside her rippled as well. It was probably her womb. Crying out for a visitor.

It had been a while, after all.

She leaned closer, against him, and it was good. She nestled her nose in his beautiful neck and took a whiff. And daham, he smelled sinful. Wicked. Alluring.

What is that fragrance?” she asked. She needed to know. Wanted to bathe in it.

He chuckled; the sound rumbled through her. “Soap.”

Mmm. Yummy.” She scudded her palm over his chest, his thick arms and down to his trim waist. He held steady as she explored, staring at her through insanely thick lashes. It should be illegal for a man to have lashes like that. His features were locked and hard. A muscle ticked in his cheek. “You’re hard,” she murmured. Oh, God, he was.

Yes, ma’am. I am.” This he said in a low purr, one that gave a sizzle of double entendre to the words.

Something cracked inside her. It was probably the remainder of her pickled restraint. He was the hottest man she’d ever seen, much less touched. His heat soaked into her and melted her, liquefied her.

She couldn’t stop her roving exploration and wouldn’t have anyway. Her hand drifted lower. His body tightened, his breath hitched as she reached his belt. And then she found him.

Her knees locked. Her pulse rocketed through her veins. Because Jesus God, he wasn’t just hard, he was rock hard.

Nice.” A whisper, all she could manage. She gave him a little pump.

He hissed in a breath and said through his teeth, “Yeah. Nice.” His hand came to her waist. He stroked her bare skin beneath the hem of her tee. His calluses scraped her sanity.

You are the most authentic of all of them,” she murmured, kissing his neck.

He grunted and pulled her closer, cupping her ass, measuring it with a squeeze. “Most authentic?”

Of all the strippers.”

He stilled for a moment and she sensed he was about to pull away, which she could not allow. He was far too delicious to give up. So she nibbled his chin. She loved the bristles of his stubble. And he tasted…like a man. More man than she’d ever had.

She released her hold on him and pressed her hips against his, wrapped herself around him, hooking her leg around his. The feel of his body, hot and hard, plastered against hers from chest to groin, made her mouth water.

He allowed it, but then he did pull back. But it wasn’t far, and it was so he could stare down at her face, so she didn’t mind. His breath washed over her and she had the sudden compulsion to taste his mouth. Not a need or a whim. A compulsion.

You think I’m the most authentic of all the strippers?” She had no idea why he was smiling, but she liked his smile. Especially the dent that appeared on his left cheek. Everything about him pushed each and every one of her buttons. They were rusty buttons, but he pushed them.

You are. You really do it better than any of them. You sure look like a real cowboy. Baby, you could rope and tie me…”

Sounds…interesting.”

She stroked his back, reveling in the bulge of his muscles as she made her way down to his ass, which she squeezed as well. “And you’re really well built.”

Thank you?”

For a stripper.”

Right.”

I wouldn’t mind if you gave me a lap dance at all.”

You…wouldn’t?”

Not at all.”

I’m…flattered.”

Would you like to?”

His brow arched. It was a striking, manly brow. “Like to?”

Give me a lap dance?”

You have no idea.”

She liked the tenor of his voice, despite the fact there was a laugh hidden in it. She raked her nails along the back of his neck and he shivered. So she walked her fingers into his hair, ignoring that she tipped his Stetson clean off.

God, his hair was soft. Dark curls. Silky and thick.

Their gazes locked. His smile faded. Tension hummed between them. Then she tugged his head down and took his lips.

Have you ever shouted at a book you were reading?

By Faith Ashlin (Guest Blogger)

Have you ever read a book that had you arguing with the characters? One where you can't stop yourself giving them advice? Not long ago I read a story that had me telling – or, much to my family's bemusement, shouting out loud – my opinion at the poor people in the pages. I even had to put the book down a couple of times because I'd reacted so strongly to it; stomping off in a huff until I'd calmed down and could start reading again.

It wasn't that I didn't like the book, oh no, I thoroughly enjoyed it and had fallen in love with the characters. The story had me so involved I couldn't stop thinking about it and I was neglecting all the important things that had to be done now, now, now, as well as staying up late, reading. I'd turned back into the naughty kid my mum scolded for reading under the covers with a torch. But I couldn't stop; I was living and breathing the story.

I was thinking about it at the supermarket, when hubby was telling me about his (boring) day at the office and in important meetings. Whenever I was forced to do other things I was tingling with anticipation to get back to it.

I absolutely love it when a book does that to me because it’s magical. Only this time, as well as loving the story, I was also cross with it – the story, not the author because causing a reaction like that meant they'd done their job really well.

My reaction to it is what kick-started me to write my new story A Slow Process of Understanding. I wanted to take the same situation and twist it my way, make the characters react the way I wanted them to. The book I'd read was a fantastic slave story but I kept getting annoyed, thinking, 'I wouldn’t react like he did. I’d be plotting my revenge!' or 'why did you do that? Why didn't you do...'

Now, I'll admit I can be a stroppy cow at times – just ask my hubby – but I can't imagine falling hopelessly in love with my owner, if I were a slave. I’d be seething with anger, no matter how carefully I had to hide it. Even if I were treated well, I’d still resent my owner and the power he had over me, especially, as in this case, I'd been free before becoming a slave.

I then started thinking about the mind-set of the owner. How would I feel/react if I’d been brought up in a society that accepted slavery? One where it was common place and unremarkable. I think it’s too easy to say I’d see how wrong it was and act differently. I’m sure that during Roman times people didn’t spend their days worrying about the morals of slavery – even if they were truly decent people. I think they would be more likely to simply accept it, the same way the whole society accepted it.

Attitudes change over time and place and I think it's too simple to ascribe our views to other circumstances. Recently there was a documentary on TV about television in the UK during the 1970's. The casual racism, sexism and homophobia were truly shocking and yet, often, back then, it was meant to be funny. It really was a different time.

Thinking about the slave story again, I realised that just because a character accepts being an owner doesn’t make him a bad person. He could be a really sweet guy who does what he thinks is the right thing, the good thing, in a situation that everyone else thinks is okay.

So, if the good-guy owner gets a slave, how would things work between them?

How would I react if I were the slave or the owner?

I can understand that owner and slave can become very close; but real, equal full-on love? No, I can’t see that. I think the power dynamic would be too unbalanced.

But I adore a happy ending so I was interested in how I could bring a couple together with that kind of awful, unequal dynamic at the start. I wanted them both to see things from the other's point of view, to really understand the situation so they could fall in the kind of deep, ever-lasting love that I dream of.

I thought that was a huge challenge but one I was eager to attempt. I’d have to change mind-sets, diffuse the anger and, somehow, bring them together in a loving, caring and, most importantly, equal relationship. Like I said, no easy task. I think the result is one of the best things I've ever written.

A Slow Process of Understanding by Faith Ashlin was released by Totally Bound on December 26th.

Blurb

How does a world that accepts slavery affect both master and slave? Can two people build a new life for themselves with a start like theirs?

It’s a world like this one except for the all-powerful State that’s very firmly in control and the fact that slavery is legal. Jimmy had never really thought about it or the fight for freedom going on around him. He was too busy enjoying his privileged life as an actor on a sci-fi show.

But what is he meant to do when he’s forced to permanently bond to a slave he doesn’t want just because he made one silly, drunken mistake? Does it change who he is, what he is?

Trouble is, Jimmy isn’t sure who he was to start with. He’d never thought about it.
And what about his slave, Nate? Can a slave force Jimmy into learning something about himself?

Excerpt
It’s not fucking fair,’ was all that kept going through Jimmy’s mind. Over and over on repeat. It wasn’t fucking fair—not fair he was here, not fair he’d be here for weeks, not fucking fair he was being forced to bond with some guy he didn’t even know. How could something like that ever be fair?
Okay, so maybe he’d stepped out of line and said things he shouldn’t, to people he shouldn’t. Said them long and loud. But he’d been drunk, and everyone knew he was an arsehole when he was drunk. He’d just kind of assumed they knew he was he was a friendly, didn’t-mean-it kind of arsehole.
And okay, maybe he had hit someone, but he hadn’t meant that either. He was the kind of drunk that did stupid things they wouldn’t normally—things they didn’t mean. Hit people they didn’t mean to. It wasn’t personal. He hadn’t known who the guy was. Just some random kid, who just happened to have a powerful mother.
Was it such a crime to get drunk and say things he shouldn’t, in front of people he shouldn’t? And hit people he shouldn’t?
Yeah, actually even he knew it was a crime, but shit, this was a hell of a punishment.
He was a good guy really, only the authorities hadn’t seen it like that, and now he was fucking stuck here. Even the minor celebrity that came with being on a TV show with plastic spaceships hadn’t bought him any leeway. But he should have known that, known what a hard, unforgiving bastard The State could be.
Now he had to pay for his stupidity. Nothing else to do now but suck it up and pay his dues.
But it might not be all bad. They’d told him he was going to be bonded with this guy—which was as near as damn it to fucking marriage—but the man would still be Jimmy’s slave. Jimmy would own him, be accountable and responsible for him. That was supposed to be part of his punishment. To teach him to be responsible, so in future, he’d act that way toward The State.
Owning a slave. That was a weird concept, but there could be positives.
He wasn’t about to treat a slave the way some people did. He’d seen it—at parties, around, hell, on the streets. Slaves bent over and fucked, passed around for anyone’s pleasure. Treated as slabs of meat. He wasn’t about to do anything like that. He’d be fair, protect him from the perverts. He’d be responsible, just like they wanted, even if it wasn’t fair.
They both knew the score, knew there’d have to be sex, but he knew how to treat a person right. Slaves were people, no matter what The State said. He’d take the free, no-strings sex as a bonus. But people, anyone, deserved to be treated right.
He might not have understood the freedom movement, but he could help one man live an easier life. He’d be doing his small part to make the world a more decent place. He’d be responsible and accept his punishment like a man. Once he got through prison.
That made him feel a little better about everything.
He just hoped the guy didn’t look like the tail end of a rhinoceros.
Two-and-a-half hours later, just as Jimmy was beginning to think that nothing would ever happen and that the silence would eat his brain away, his cell was unlocked. Three men held the door open for him, the first one pointing to the door. “It’s time,” he said.
Jimmy was led along numerous corridors, his hands sweating, his belly rolling every step of the way. He knew what was coming. He’d be all right, but still, shit. He rubbed his palms on the back of his jeans but the moisture was replaced as soon as he wiped it away.
On into a court room with more people, all the equipment laid out ready. Hell, this was real. This was really going to happen.
He was taken to the far end, stood in front of a lectern, then a court official murmured to him, “We just have to wait for your slave to be brought in. He needed medical treatment. He’ll be here shortly.”
Medical treatment?
Then the door at the back opened again, and Jimmy twisted round, straining to see as a group of people made their way forward. Two enormous men were half leading, half carrying a guy who was dragging one leg behind him. Jimmy’s eyes were drawn down to where the guy’s jeans had been raggedly cut open above his knee. His foot, ankle and lower leg were covered with a thick plaster cast, his bare toes sticking out—his bare, filthy toes. Jimmy wrinkled his nose in disgust as his gaze moved up. The rest of the guy was just as dirty, mud encrusted and grungy. His hair wasn’t much better, nor his face, but he sure wasn’t bad looking under the dirt.
Maybe this wouldn’t be as hard as it could have been.
Before Jimmy could take in anymore there was a commotion and the judge entered. His thick robes and stupid hat may have been over the top and melodramatic, but they had the right effect. They brought an air of seriousness—of things being out of his control and inevitable—and Jimmy felt himself start to shake.
Verdict has been passed,” the judge spoke solemnly, the majesty of the law behind every word. “I’m here to carry out sentence.” He studied Jimmy as a small hand-held machine was pushed in front of him. “Sign your name,” the judge instructed.
Taking the stylus that was thrust at him, Jimmy fought to keep his hand from shaking. He had to do this right, make his writing legible. This was important. This was permanent.
Permanent.
He exhaled hard, nostrils flaring, and wrote his name.
The judge nodded and turned to an official. “Bring the slave forward.” The guy with the cast was hauled forward, his right hand pushed onto the lectern, his fingers splayed. The machine was fitted into place over the back of his hand and a button pressed. He grunted and a flash of pain hit his face, but he quickly pulled himself together, standing as immobile as he could. The only sign of anything wrong was the way his chest heaved.
Permanent.
Second brand,” the judge ordered, and the guy’s face went blank.
One of the men who had brought him in now braced the slave on the side with the broken foot. The guy leaned in, gripping on with one hand. He had no choice if he didn’t want to fall over, as one of the other men undid his jeans pushing them and his underwear down his thighs. The man moved behind the slave, and Jimmy caught sight of pale freckled skin and a soft belly as his shirt was lifted and held up. Again the machine was brought forward and placed on his left hip, over the pubic bone. When the button was pressed this time, the grunt was deeper but more contained.
The slave’s shirt fell down as he was steadied on his feet and he was left to pull the rest of his clothes back into place himself. Someone pushed Jimmy next to him before they were both turned to face the lectern.
Now for the bonding,” the judge spoke to Jimmy. “You will own your slave but, as you are also to be bonded, you will have extra responsibilities, even more than in an equal marriage. Do you understand?”
Jimmy nodded.
Do you accept this bonding as the right and proper recompense to your benevolent State for your crimes?”
Jimmy knew better than to argue as his heart thumped against his chest. “I do.” They really were going to go all the way through with this.
Raise your hand.”
Jimmy held his hand out, palm upwards. His family would kill him.
The judge turned to the slave. “Do you accept?” No niceties or explanations but he had to be heard to say yes.
There was silence and Jimmy couldn’t stop himself glancing over. The slave stared straight ahead as he swallowed deep and hard. Then there was a huge hand on the back of his neck, fingers arching and pushing into the vulnerable tendons at the side. Pushing and pushing and…the veins were standing out either side of the fingers, and Jimmy thought he could see the blood held back, pumping just under the surface and… “Yes,” the guy said, and the clamp on his neck was lifted away.
Raise your hand.” The judge didn’t even look at him anymore—slaves weren’t worth the effort.
The guy lifted his hand, holding it palm down just over Jimmy’s. The court official moved forward and wrapped a leather cord round their combined hands, pushing them flesh to flesh as the judge enunciated carefully something frighteningly legal. Jimmy couldn’t hear it for the rushing of the blood in his ears.
You are now bonded,” the judge said, as the official tied the cord tightly. “You are now mates.” A beat pounded in Jimmy’s head, his mouth dried out and his belly clamped. His mum would cry for a month.
The judge was already getting up ready to leave. “Take them to their cell. Assessment in…” He consulted his book. “One month.”
Jimmy dropped his hand. The warm palm tied to his went with it. The implication of that hit him like a brick, and he thought he might just fall over. But the men who had brought them in were trying to usher them out. With a firm hand pressed to his back, Jimmy took a couple of steps forward and was almost immediately brought to a stop. He glanced round. The guy really was filthy but his eyes were…
I can’t walk properly,” his slave said quietly.
No, right. Of course you can’t.” Jimmy went to support him on the side of his injured leg but stopped, turned to the court official. “Do I help him? Am I allowed, seeing as he’s my slave?”
No, you’re not allowed to give aid or assistance to a slave. Let them do it.” The official nodded toward the men around them. Jimmy realized for the first time that they were slaves as well. On the back of their hands, instead of an individual’s signature, there was a State department’s stamp. They were owned by the state. One moved forward and caught Jimmy’s slave’s arm over his shoulder, taking his weight.
You can untie that now.” The official pointed to the cord. “But keep it. It’s another sign of ownership and bonding. Some people like to tie it round their slave’s neck.”
Jimmy’s fingers fumbled as he fought to undo the knots. He didn’t want to tie it anywhere. He stuffed it in his pocket as he followed the slaves out and down more corridors to a prison wing. They stopped outside a metal door with a number twenty-two on it, waiting as it was unlocked. Then it was opened and he was steered inside, his slave was brought in after him and dumped unceremoniously on the floor by the wall. The door was locked behind them.
The banging echoed inside Jimmy’s skull. His mum was going to make more noise than that when she found out.
Nothing else to do but make the best of it.
Well.” He walked forward, assessing the space. “I guess as prison cells go this could be worse.” The room was rectangular in shape, a small table and two chairs at one end, big bed at the other, a bank of windows along the short end. Off to one side was a door leading to a tiny bathroom. The whole place was scruffy. There were the scrapes and scratches of other occupants everywhere, but clean enough, functional and better than he’d expected. “What do you think?”
When there was no answer, he turned so he could see the man on the floor. “You okay?” Still no answer. “Hey, I asked you a question.”
The man had stretched out his injured leg and was rubbing above the plaster cast. He raised his eyes a little, licking at his bottom lip. “I’m sorry. I don’t know how this works.”
How what works?”
My being your slave. Do you really want to know what I think? If I’m okay?”
Jimmy stopped then, suddenly conscious of everything. There were rules for how to treat a slave. They were meant to be followed all the time, whether in private or public. It was his turn to lick at his lips as he turned in a circle, studying the room again in a completely different way. “You think they have a camera or some kind of microphone in here? That they’re watching what we do?”
Are you asking me? Am I meant to answer?” It was said softly, hesitantly.
The question had been more Jimmy thinking out loud than anything else but now he wanted to know. “Yes. How private do you think this place is?”
The man—Jimmy’s slave, and that idea still blew his mind—examined the place, ceiling, walls, fittings. Missing nothing. “There’s no camera, no mic I can see and no obvious place to hide one. But then, why would they bother hiding it?”
True. I guess we don’t have to watch ourselves all the time then, that’s one good thing. I think that…” Again he stopped, hands on hips as he stared down. “I can’t carry on like this. What’s your name?”
Nate,” the man said simply.
Nate, Nat, that’s nice. I’m Jimmy, Jimmy Stephens.” He stuck his arm out, ready to shake hands. Nate stared at it for a moment before holding out his own, palm down.
I know,” Nate said, looking at the back of his hand. Jimmy’s eyes were drawn to it as well. There, amid the raised, red, angry looking puffy skin, was his name, clearly visible in black, burnt-in lettering.
Permanent.

About Faith Ashlin

When Faith was clearing out her attic many years ago, she found a book she’d written as a ten-year-old. On rereading it she realised that it was the love story of two boys. Over the years her fascination with the image of beautiful young men, coiled together as they fell head over heels in love, became a passion for her.

Since that first innocent book—written in purple sparkly pen—she has written many stories, set in varied worlds, but always with two men finding their way to happiness.

Review Tuesday: Standish by Erastes

Standish by Erastes
Lethe Press, 2013

Historical settings have long been popular in the erotica and erotic romance genres. There are many potential advantages to using the Victorian era, the Regency period, medieval France or ancient Rome as the site for a sexy tale. Plot, character, and setting elements that would be difficult to justify in a contemporary story fit naturally in the past: corporal punishment, kidnapping, and slavery; ruined gentlewomen and debauched nobles; exotic costumes and accessible undergarments; romantically isolated castles and conveniently private carriages; candlelight instead of electricity; hand-penned missives, scented and wax-sealed, in lieu of email.

Many "historical" erotic novels, however, merely adopt the trappings of their chosen period while retaining a modern perspective. The attitudes and actions of the characters are not consistent with the mores and assumptions of the historical period.  Even the language is frequently contemporary, using modern conventions that eschew description and favor a third person limited-omniscient point of view, focused on one or two characters.

Standish, a homoerotic romance set in England in the Regency period (roughly 1800-1830), is the real thing, a genuine historical novel in which the characters are believable creatures of their era. In Regency England, buggery was a capital crime and duelling was an accepted method for settling disputes. Society was divided between a wealthy aristocracy renowned for its excesses, and a rabble of poor, uneducated commoners who lived in unbelievable squalor and misery. A fledgling middle class struggled to emulate the respectability and extravagance of the nobles. Position and reputation were supremely important. The world was a dangerous and uncertain place as Europe looked back fearfully on the bloody years of the French Revolution.

Standish is set against this background. It chronicles the relationship of Ambrose Standish, a bookish, sheltered former aristocrat fallen on difficult times, and Rafe Goshawk, wealthy, cynical, and highly susceptible to beautiful young men.

From the very first, Ambrose and Rafe are in implicit conflict over Standish, the elegant Dorset estate that should have been Ambrose's birthright. Rafe's grandfather won the estate from Ambrose's grandfather in a reputedly rigged card game; the elder Standish was later killed in a duel when he accused his opponent of cheating. Ambrose lives with his spinster sisters in a modest dwelling on the fringes of the Standish property, the main house always before him like an unachievable dream.

After living abroad or in London most of his life, Rafe decides to move to Standish with his young son Sebastien. Unaware of Ambrose's family history, Rafe hires Ambrose as a tutor. As soon as the worldly aristocrat sets eyes on the handsome young scholar, Rafe desires him, although Ambrose is cold and formal. Rafe's schemes of seduction are derailed when he suffers a serious fall and is bedridden for several weeks. Ambrose cares for the invalid Rafe, and gradually falls in love with him. Eventually Rafe recovers and realizes that Ambrose is more than simply a conquest, that he loves the man and that his passion is returned.

All this happens in the first dozen chapters. The novel continues in the typical mold of a romance, with obstacles and misunderstandings arising between the lovers, which at long last are resolved. The obstacles, however, are far from typical. Just as he is learning to enjoy the physical aspects of loving Rafe, Ambrose is brutally raped by one of Rafe's discarded paramours.  This sets off a chain of events that culminates in Ambrose narrowly escaping the gallows for buggery and being imprisoned in the notorious Newgate.   On one level, Standish is a classic romance. Rafe and Ambrose are truly and deeply in love; this is a conjunction of souls, not merely a physical dalliance. At the same time, it turns romance conventions on their heads. In this period, Rafe and Ambrose risk their lives if they love openly. Homosexual desire is a mortal sin; homosexual activity is a crime punishable by death.

The historical authenticity of this novel is enhanced by Erastes' stylistic choices. She writes in the third person omniscient, with extensive descriptions and passages of bridging narration or backstory that would be out of place in a contemporary novel, but which  fit the current tale perfectly.  Erastes is not Jane Austen, but I could almost believe that this book had been written in the period that it describes.

The minor characters add to the effect. The clergyman dedicated to educating slum children; his gentle and self-sacrificing sister; the dissolute soldier who is ruined by his infatuation with Rafe; the scheming Irish prisoner who controls the Newgate occupants through   bribes, threats and carnal favors; these characters are familiar figures from stories of the period.

The one aspect of the book that is likely not historically authentic is the sexual description. The sex scenes are much more graphic than anything one would be likely to find in a mainstream Regency novel, though they are less explicit than what one finds in contemporary gay erotica. Erastes doesn't mince words, but Rafe's and Ambrose's encounters tend to be sensual and intense rather than crude and raunchy.

I read a lot of erotica. For me, Standish was refreshingly different from the froth of recreational sex or the edgy post-modernism that characterize much of what I read.  It is a well-executed period piece with stimulating characters and a surprisingly unpredictable plot. Even though I knew that this was a romance novel that should end happily ever after, I wondered up until the very end whether Rafe and Ambrose really would manage to be reunited.

If you are the sort of person who gets impatient with description and annoyed with an author that tells a story rather than focusing solely on the action, you probably should skip Standish. On the other  hand, if you sometimes prefer the more leisurely pace of nineteenth century novels, and you're interested in gay male themes, then you will probably enjoy this book as much as I did.

Cover Reveal - Nasty Business

My BDSM romantic erotica novel Nasty Business is about to be re-released by Fireborn Publishing. The book was orphaned last year when I broke off with the publisher, and I'm really happy to have it available again.

Fireborn has done a great new cover, as you can see!

The book will be officially released Friday. I thought I'd whet your appetite with a blurb and excerpt.

All's fair in love and business.

Excerpt

"Bravo.” A soft, melodious male voice, and then the sound of applause. “I’m extremely impressed.”

I pull myself upright. Did someone dare to watch me and my medieval servitor?

I have just been finger-fucked to exhaustion, yet my first reaction is a wave of total, incomprehensible lust. Incomprehensible, because the man who stands between the parted curtains is not at all my type. He is short and wiry. His hair is scraggly and bit too long around his ears, and he has a dreadful, drooping black mustache. He wears nondescript jeans and a khaki shirt.

Somehow, though, he radiates sexuality. His aura is palpable, the air thick and sticky as syrup. He fixes me with his intense, dark eyes and grins. I feel like I am melting. I want to spread my legs wider, desperately offer him my swelling sex for him to use as he will.

I struggle with my impulses, close my legs decisively and try to stare him down. “I gather you were spying on me and my admirer.”

Indeed. A most entertaining and instructive tableau.” He enters the balcony space, letting the curtains close behind him, and picks up the flogger. The knotted thongs dangle an inch above my cleavage. “You seem to be quite an expert in the arts of discipline.”

Hardly,” I say, taking the whip from him, trying to take control of the interaction. “I am just beginning to explore the possibilities.

But,” I say, my eyes narrowing as I watch his reaction, “I do find myself quite sensitive to my partners’ desires to yield to my power.”

I could see that. You knew what he wanted, and you gave it to him.” He pauses, and searches my face. “But, do you know what I want?”

Truly, I have no idea. He seems fascinated by the flogger, but I sense only a hint of submission in him, a playful curiosity totally different from the aching need of my recent conquest.

His eyes play over my body in a leisurely fashion, appreciative, it seems, but not urgent. Surreptitiously, I glance at his fly: an appealing bulk there, but no indication of arousal.

I, on the other hand, am hornier than I have been in weeks. Maybe months. Or ever. My clit throbs like a sore tooth. I lean forward so that my breasts part invitingly, and lick my painted lips.

Tell me what you want,” I purr. “I’m feeling generous tonight, and just might grant your request.”

He leans toward me in answer, and grasps my chin. Strange electricity flows from his touch. My breasts ache. My cunt is on fire.

I want you to take me home with you,” he says with a cryptic smile. And then he kisses me.

I am not sentimental. I am not romantic, susceptible, easily mastered. But I swear, I could drown in this kiss.

His lips are smooth and full, his tongue demanding. He tastes of peppermint, and behind that, an aromatic trace of pipe tobacco. I smell his cologne, something clean, woodsy, Scandinavian.

I do not want to give in, and yet I do. I return his kiss, open my mouth wide to his probing. He senses my partial surrender and presses his advantage. He has slipped his hand inside my vest, now, and is pinching my nipple hard.

I love it. I am awash with lust. I am dying for him to take me. My sex is liquid, spilling over. My scent rises in the velvet-draped space. I know that I cannot hide my desire, but still I try.

You seem most enthusiastic,” I say, my voice surprisingly steady. “But why should I allow you into my personal space?”

Because you want to,” he says, deftly extricating my breast from its leather casing and planting a kiss on its tip. “And because you think that you will have more control on your home territory. As an interloper, I will necessarily be at a disadvantage.”

He is right. Many women would feel vulnerable, bringing a stranger into their home, but I am more confident on my own turf than in some unfamiliar locale. I am astonished by his perspicacity. Who is this man? He appears so ordinary and yet there is both physical attraction and psychological intrigue.

Let’s go, then,” I say, trying to take the offensive.

Just one moment,” he replies, and swallows me up in another one of those kisses. My resistance is even more feeble than before. After all, I tell myself, it is only a kiss.

This book sizzles! Get ready. I'll have a contest to win a copy the day of release!
