A Visit to the Pet Shop

By K.D. Grace (Guest Blogger)

The Pet Shop is a modern retelling of Beauty and the Beast. In part, the theme of the story is our effort to understand the beast that lives within all of us, to tame it and make it acceptable to polite company. Of course in the taming of anything wild we run the risk of losing that wildness that compelled us to love it in the first place. The Pet Shop explores the effort to find a balance between the two.

I’ve always been fascinated with our animal nature, and I’ve often wondered how much of that nature is ancestral behaviours reasserting themselves and how much of it – especially from the standpoint of the human pet situation I’ve created in The Pet Shop, is simply a need to be loved and adored, and to be able to trust someone enough to give up control to them.

Beauty and the Beast and my retelling of it in The Pet Shop are both about seeing the true nature of a person, with all their flaws and neuroses, and loving them anyway. But ultimately the story is also about trusting enough to allow oneself to be loved, and believing that one is worthy of love, warts, blemishes and all.

An erotic novel by best-selling author K D Grace.

In appreciation for a job well done, STELLA JAMES 's boss sends her a pet – a human pet. The mischievous TINO comes straight from THE PET SHOP complete with a collar, a leash, and an erection. Stella soon discovers the pleasure of keeping Pets, especially this one, is extremely addicting.

Obsessed with Tino and with the reclusive philanthropist, VINCENT EVANSTON, who looks like Tino, but couldn’t be more different, Stella is drawn into the secret world of The Pet Shop. As her animal lust awakens, Stella must walk the thin line that separates the business of pleasure from the more dangerous business of the heart or suffer the consequences.

Excerpt

"YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS," O'Kelly said, nearly dropping the phone. "You can't really mean to give Stella James Tino for the whole weekend. Wouldn't a nice gift voucher from Selfridges be more appropriate?"

The Boss offered her a tolerant chuckle on the other end of the phone. "Didn't she tell you she thought an occasional shag wasn't too much to ask for doing such a demanding job?"

"Yes, but she was joking. I'm sure she never expected–"

"Well, she's right. It isn't too much to ask, is it? She's a very dedicated employee, and we've always done our best to reward dedicated employees, especially one with such promise, one that we have such plans for."

"Yes but–"

"Hasn't she met and surpassed our expectations since she's joined Strigida, and didn't we both agree she's exactly what we're looking for?"

"Yes, but–"

"She's not in a relationship, right?"

She rolled her eyes and glanced down at her watch. He was on a roll. Nothing for it now but to hear him out.

"No relationship, no family. Stella can afford to live in London because she has no life outside of work, all factors we took into account when we hired her. There's no arguing she doesn't have time for sex." He paused long enough for a quick breath. "Sorry to say that's the way of the world these days. All work and no play. Very sad. Very sad indeed."

"Yes, sir. It is sad, but, sir, Tino?"

"Yes. Tino."

"OK, maybe for a couple of hours, maybe. But surely not for the whole weekend."

"Yes, for the whole weekend, O'Kelly, from Friday night till Sunday evening. Every last second of it."

O"Kelly rubbed her forehead impatiently then rolled her shoulders to loosen the knots, which she could always count on the Boss to tighten. "It's not that the woman doesn't deserve a weekend of blow-your-brains-out sex. God knows she does, but ..."

"But what, O'Kelly? Get to the point."

O"Kelly squirmed uncomfortably in her seat. She found the whole thing a bit embarrassing, actually. "Well, sir, she's just so ..."

"So what?"

"She's just so tight laced, so prim and proper. I don't know – all business. I can't help but wonder if we've made a mistake, and even if we haven't, a weekend with Tino is just so hardcore at this stage, don't you think?" She straightened in her chair and brushed her skirt free of the few remaining crumbs from the sandwich she had wolfed for lunch. "I can't picture her being the kind who could appreciate or even be able to handle a weekend with Tino."

"Prim and proper? Really? You just told me she was joking about the company providing sex as a fringe benefit for its overworked employees. Doesn't sound very prim and proper to me. In fact she sounds like exactly the woman we've been looking for."

Sunday Snog: Tomorrow's Gifts

I'm back from my trip and ready to serve up your Sunday snog. This one's from Tomorrow's Gifts, a M/M holiday tale decorated with paranormal phenomena and BDSM.

Don't forget to visit Victoria Blisse, the inventor of the Sunday Snog, and savor the tasty kiss she has selected for your this Sunday!

“So, Michael. Have you been a good little boy?” Neil loomed over me, one hand against the wall on either side of my head. “Do you deserve the goodies that Santa’s brought for you?” Leaning forward, he trailed a wet tongue up my neck, from my open collar to just below my earlobe. When I squirmed in response, he flattened his pelvis against the lump growing in my jeans and fastened his mouth on mine. The fake beard got in the way. He ripped it off and resumed kissing me, while his hands slipped around me to cup my ass.

I loved the way Neil kissed, with his full body, investing his entire being into the process. I snuggled against his red felt jacket, allowing him to take possession of my mouth. His kisses were deep, wet, full of soul. They made me light-headed. They made me hard. I could taste the beer he had drunk at the party and the peppermint candy cane that we’d shared on the way home, but underneath there was the familiar flavour of Neil, my housemate, friend and lover.

I forced my hand between our bodies and fumbled at his zipper. “Oh, are you being a naughty little boy?” he breathed in my ear. “Santa will have to punish you.”

His words thrilled me. Oh, if only he would make good on his threats! I knew from experience that he was only teasing, though. But maybe tonight would be different. With the holiday high, the post-party buzz, maybe tonight he’d give me what I craved.

I wrenched his fly open and wriggled through the opening in his briefs until I had what I wanted – the silky sensation of his cock-skin under my fingers. My own cock throbbed as I stroked him, marvelling at the contrast between the rock-hard flesh underneath and the satin-smooth layer that enclosed it.

I wanted to sink to my knees and suck him, right there in the hallway. I wanted him to fuck my mouth until I gagged, then drown me in his come. Instead, he extricated my hand from his trousers and squeezed it affectionately. “Let’s go to bed, baby. Let’s get naked.”

America Patterson loves living on the edge. The intelligent Car Model engages in illegal street racing, knowing she's one of the best. Underneath her flawless facade lies a young woman in turmoil. When her new found hobby lands her in hot water, she finds she may be in over her head.

When Alejandro Escovedo is summoned home after his Mixed Martial Arts fight to find his best friend's sister in jail, he knows he must intervene. Their explosive past gives him all rights where she’s concerned. He’s determined to end her dare-devil ways by finding the trigger to her self-destructive behavior.

Excerpt- PG13

America ran her fingers over her baby—a white gloss GTO with black stripes. She had an hour to get to the site. Smoothing her hands over her car, she smiled and checked both the headlights and tail lights before she climbed in. Her pressure gauge ensured her tires were filled for optimum use. America’s mouth watered, thinking about the naughty game she played behind her family’s and employer’s backs. Nothing compared to winning over peers who’d raced innumerable times against her.

Her engine purred as she sat in the car, thinking about the winning bounty. Paying the twenty-large entry fee wouldn’t break her, not with what she made for modeling. The one hundred grand purse would enable her to buy more parts for her babies than she could alone on her salary. Her phone flashed. 2253 Industrial Highway warehouse district two. After responding, she flipped the switch on her BOSE stereo system and iPod to scroll down her playlist to pick a song. Damn, between Rap and Metal, she couldn’t decide. Thrumming her fingers on the wheel, she gave up and hit random. The sound of Disturbed filled the compact space. Amy slipped into her racing harness and eased her baby out of the private garage.

Twenty minutes later, she pulled up into the unsavory warehouse district, parked, and got out of her car. A quick scan of the crowd gave her an estimate of around two hundred-plus waiting for the event to start. Not everyone could race since it was by invite only. Reputation didn’t matter. The winner always received a summons back again to prove they could hold the title.

America knew she was well known for her modeling and her talent with her special babies. Her car housed the best NOS system and engine money could buy. And that took cold cash and haggling, two things America learned by years of experience. A signed original photo or two and a promise of tickets to her premiere shows gained her entry everywhere.

Jessica and Mandy waited by their cars. The trio of models traveled and played well together in and outside of the law. America grinned and made her way to her friends, her hips swaying in the itty bitty, micro, black and white plaid skirt with a black G-string underneath it. She knew the underside of her ass showed, but more than that, the combination of her tan displayed by six-inch stilettos made her legs look good. She adjusted her midriff top and linked her arm with Mandy.

“You prepared to lose again?” Amy teased.

“Like we’d race against you—we stopped losing to you months ago.” Jessica looked over Amy’s shoulder at the other drivers.

“We’ll bet on you.” Mandy elbowed Jessica in the ribs. “Pay attention.” She let her eyes fall on Amy’s choice of ride. Sweet! You brought the Mustang.”

“Like I was going to bring the Saleen.” Amy agreed that her baby was the perfect choice to race.

“Amy, you have what, like seventeen cars, right?” Jessica craned her neck around to catch a glimpse of one of the guys they ran with. Just then, Jayshaun approached them.

“Sweetness.” Jayshaun raked his eyes over her. “I need your entry fee.”

“My face is up here.” Amy ignored his lecherous gaze honed in on her breasts and slammed the money in his palm. “When’s the race?”

“Your heat is first. Afterward we’ll let the youngsters in.” He placed the money in a locked box and walked off.

America crossed her arms and winked at her girls. “Wish me good luck.” She got a kiss on the cheek from both girls and turned, sashaying to her car.

The deafening noise made it hard to concentrate. On the sidelines, the various ages of participants, family, and cliques all stood by with cameras, cell phones, and digital camcorders. She waved to the crowd of her peers, intent on publicizing the event via an underground link.

Amy kissed the hood of her car and raised it. She completed a quick check over her wires and engine. “My baby, let’s go win that green.” She shut the hood and tugged down her micro-mini skirt. The drag was a mile long with a two-barrel turnaround, the first one back to the starting point. If she took first place, she would run in a second race later in the day. Since she’d won the last four races straight, bookies bet on her being the sure winner.

Cars bumped everything from TI to Petey Pablo and Daddy Yankee. With a smirk on her face, America had to be different. She fired up and flipped on her system, which blared Rage Against The Machine’s “Killing In The Name Of.” As usual, she flipped off the driver next to her and brought her car to the starting point. The deafening crowd screamed and taunted in an effort to punk out the competition. She ignored them all and ran her hands over her special steering wheel, checking the NOS chambers. Full, the way she liked it. Her choice of song gained her the attention she aimed for. Who the fuck played metal at a showdown?

She did. The gun went off, and the filming began as she spun her tires and hit the accelerator, adrenalin flowing through her veins. Cool and collected, she shot down the strip toe-to-toe with the last driver that had almost tied her for a win. After coming close to tying, she’d modified her car by calling on favors. She didn’t stop to wonder if they’d made any. Glancing to her left to see who was next to her, she hit the accelerator again: 60, 90, 120 of pure metal. Slamming on the clutch, she shifted gears and passed two of her competitors and flew past the marker turning…drifting to head back in first place, hitting the NOS at the perfect time when only fifty yards remained. The finish line was closing in on her.

The steering wheel faltered when she lost traction. The cloud of smoke from burning rubber blinded her. America steered her car back and noticed two other GTO’s and a Honda coupe gaining on her.

Come on, baby, only a bit more to go.

Sparks ignited fear in her. The Mustang spun out of control. One tire flew off the car in the direction of the crowd. Amy would have screamed, but she knew her car was made for impact. There was no time to look for an alternate route. Her choice was to hit the building or run down the pedestrians and other cars. She aimed the car for the warehouse glass doors and slammed on the brakes.

The jarring collision shook her to the core. While the harness held her in place, the windshield caved in as the car crumbled, sealing her in as she slid farther into the building. Dust rained down with siding and broken wood until the car skidded to a halt. Blood trickled, leaving a wet trail down the side of her face and neck. The driver window splintered, spewing pieces of glass over her. In reflex she protected her face with her hands, trying to ignore the pain radiating through her body.

In the distance, she heard the up close wail of an ambulance or police. Either way, she knew she was screwed. The number one rule to racing—in the event of an accident—was to scatter like the wind and call 9-1-1. No doubt YouTube was already busy with the wreckage. Moaning, she wished she’d told her brother where she was going. Pain heightened to a blinding migraine. She touched her forehead and felt blood and a knot form. She looked down, saw glass over her, and smelled gas either from the car or from the building.

“Fuck me!” Darkness descended.

***

Antiseptic…sterile…death…the smells assailed her as she woke up. Amy raised her hand to feel her head and felt the tight pinch of handcuffs on her right hand. “Where am I?” She focused her blurry eyes until her vision cleared and saw a police officer sitting next to her.

“In the hospital for observation,” the uniformed officer answered.

“Why am I handcuffed?” she asked. Confusion clouded her judgment.

“You’ve been under doctor care for twenty-four hours. The EMT’s were able to rouse you while en route here. I read you your rights while transporting you in the ambulance. Do you remember why you were arrested?”

“No.” She paused to gather her thoughts. “My head hurts.”

“My name is Officer Blake. Do you know your name?” Officer Blake took out his pen and pad to take notes.

“America Patterson,” she answered.

“That’s not what the driver’s license identification card in your purse says. We’ll print you when we book you,” the officer stated and pulled out his radio.

“I’m going to jail?”

“Normally, people who vandalize private property, drive with reckless abandon, race illegally, and possess a fake identification card go to jail.”

America cringed. “Where’s my car?”

“Don’t you want to know if you harmed anyone?” he asked.

“I know I didn’t. I drove into the warehouse because I knew it was abandoned.” His rude tone annoyed her. She put her free hand to her head. “It hurts.”

“What’s left of your car is impounded for evidence. Lady—whatever your real name is—is there anyone you can call?”

“No…yes,” she said.

“Which is it, no or yes? You’ll need to be bailed out.”

“Where are my clothes?”

“What clothes? You had to be cut out of your car with the jaws of life. Your shredded clothing and broken heels are bagged for evidence, along with your purse.” He reached over and unlocked the cuff to free her hand then gave her his personal cell. “You’re damn lucky to be alive and relatively unharmed. Make the call. We’re leaving as soon as the Doc clears you.”

Amy heard the lecture in his voice. She took a deep breath and gulped back the fear of being escorted to a jail cell. She dialed her brother, Saint Vincent’s number.

“Hello,” a worried voice answered.

“Hi.” Amy sniffled.

“America, where are you?”

“Saint, I’m in big trouble.” Amy gripped the cell tightly to her ear. “I’m at Truman Memorial Hospital, about to be taken to jail.” She started to sob when reality dawned on her.

“Thank God, you’re alive. I’ve been going out of my mind since the link to the wreck was sent to my cell phone. Sit tight. We’ve been fielding police and the media, trying to protect your professional name. Sis—Alejandro demanded to be the one to handle the situation.”

“I’m sorry for scaring you.” Her brother and his team of misfits were all she had while growing up. Being named after their country of conception and locked in just how zany her family was, Saint Vincent got his name chopped in half to Saint. “Is this going to hurt your business?” She winced at the thought of seeing Alejandro again after so long. “No. Alejandro will make sure you have a smooth transaction. I’m forwarding him your info now. Sit still and relax. Can’t have the baby of the family locked up and forgotten.”

Her voice dropped an octave. “Can’t you come? I haven’t seen him since—”

“Ms., we’re ready to transport you to the police department,” Officer Blake interrupted.

“I gotta go.” Amy snapped the phone shut and handed it back to the officer. He was kind enough to leave, allowing her to change into the jumpsuit they’d sent for. She rapped and opened the door after toeing into the slip-on canvas shoes. “I’m ready.” Head dropped low; she allowed them to escort her to the jailhouse that was a ten-minute ride away.

Being booked took longer than she’d expected, and it mortified her. A nifty machine imprinted her fingerprints electronically after they took her mug shot. The issue with her identification became clear once she had a chance to speak and separate her professional identity from her personal one. When they finished processing her fingerprints and mug shot, she followed them to general population and looked at all the criminals. The door buzzed and opened, and she was ushered in. She cast a glance at the officer, who shook his head, locked the door, and turned his back.

I’m not a criminal.

***

An hour later, her savior appeared. Escorted by the correction officer, Alejandro Escovedo approached her. Her eyes locked on his bulging arms, the tattooed sleeves covering his tan flesh. She shivered, remembering how his skin felt under her fingers when she tricked him into fucking her. The clinking of the door opening snapped her out of her reverie. When she snuck a look his way, anger rolled off him in waves and had her backing up. Only when the officer took hold of her arm, propelling her out of the closed cell, did she make baby steps in leaving.

Me vuelves loca.” Alejandro handed her clothes. He gave her a few moments to change, and then followed the officer to the door leading them out of the building, using a secret passage to avoid the reporters out to get the top story of the week.

“Alejandro,” Amy spoke softly. The last time she’d seen the pissed off expression on his face was when he woke from a drunken night to find her in his bed. Best friends don’t sleep with their best friend’s baby sister. She remembered him screaming at her before he left for training.

He raised his hand up, forestalling her from speaking.

“No! You’ve been on your own too long.” Amy stepped into his embrace and wound her arms around his waist and then up his muscle-defined arms. “I didn’t mean to make you crazy. She slipped her palms up the inside of his shirt, splaying them over his chest, tracing his numerous tattoos like a blind man who read Braille.

Alejandro put his hand over hers and lowered his head down to her ear. “You play with fire.” He wove his fingers into her hair. “No doubt you’re remembering my cock taking away your gift, the feel of my fingers spearing into your pussy, bringing you pleasure.”

He nipped her lobe. “Do you remember how many times you came that night for me? I do—every single one, and how your tongue felt as it darted across my heated skin licking and tracing the lion tattoo across my back, the military one on my chest, and your mouth on my pierced cock.” He traced a finger across her lower lip and held her trembling body.

“You’ve avoided me since that night,” she accused and looked around the empty parking lot.

“Hmm, I’ve been out of the country working. You wanted attention; you got it. Not the way I would’ve liked.”

Alejandro took advantage of her parted mouth and speared his tongue into her mouth. Amy moaned, opening for his assault. She’d wanted this for the past year, ached for him to come home, and make her his again. Her senses spun. He tasted of darkness and danger. Heat pooled between her thighs to get them throbbing. She pressed closer, slid her arms from under his shirt up to his face, and cupped his cheeks in her hands.

When he stepped back with a sudden move, pinning her against his SUV, she shivered from the penetrating gaze. His jaw clenched as he smoothed down his shirt. She licked her bottom lip and laid her hands on his chest. “Want more?” He took her hand in his and pressed her palm to his erection. Amy treaded lightly with the trick question. If she said no, she’d be a liar, but if she said yes, he might very well fuck the wits out of her in his black tinted-window vehicle. “Yes.” She decided honesty was the best policy.

“Too bad. Bad girls don’t get fucked. Get in the vehicle. We’re going home, querida.”

The unspoken way he regarded her gave her insight: he’d come home to stay, and she’d have to work her way into his good graces. She schooled her features and scurried to her side of the vehicle. She’d find a way to appease his anger and fuel their need for one another.

Weekend at Wilderhope Manor

Today I'm featuring a new release by my good friend Lucy Felthouse. Weekend at Wilderhope Manor is a spooky, sexy F/F story - just in time for Halloween!

Blurb:

When Stephanie and Jenny go to a Murder Mystery Halloween weekend at Wilderhope Manor, they’re expecting fun and games. But following creaky floorboards, spooky noises and an alarming encounter in the Manor’s grounds, the girls begin to wonder if there’s more to Wilderhope Manor than meets the eye. As they find frequent comfort in one another’s arms – and their bed – will the girls discover what’s causing the bumps in the night, or will they run scared?

Excerpt:

The car trundled up the long driveway, the crunching of gravel beneath tyres the only sound as Stephanie and her girlfriend, Jenny, peered out of the windows at their surroundings.

Even at dusk the tree-lined driveway was impressive with perfectly maintained parkland, spanning for acres on either side of it. As Stephanie steered the Fiesta around a bend in the track, they both gasped. Their destination, Wilderhope Manor, had come into view and it was stunning. The Tudor style property was huge, with no less than three frontages visible from where they were. Chimneys with intricately built patterns jutted into the darkening sky, with tangles of ivy climbing parts of the manor, giving the place an appearance that was both beautiful and foreboding.

Presently, the driveway opened out into a gravelled area, which as far as Stephanie could tell, doubled as a car park for the weekend. Stephanie manoeuvred into a spot between two vehicles and killed the engine. As she turned to Jenny, she jumped, startled. Her girlfriend had leaned in close, making a scary face with her hands mimicking claws.

Are you ready to be scared out of your wits, young lady?” Jenny rasped, wiggling her eyebrows and fingers theatrically.

Stephanie shoved her playfully, laughing. “Come on, you silly cow. It’s a murder mystery weekend, not a monster hunt. There will be no ghosts, ghouls or vampires involved.”

Stephanie got out of the car and closed the door. She’d already popped open the boot and started unloading their bags before Jenny appeared alongside her, pouting petulantly.

But it’s Halloween tomorrow,” Jenny insisted. “Anything could happen. The veil between the living and dead will be at its thinnest, and this place is meant to be swarming with ghosts.”

If you say so, sweetheart,” she replied, rolling her eyes. She was used to Jenny’s crazy beliefs by now. “Grab your bags and let’s get inside. It’s cold. You got the tickets?”

Jenny nodded, brandishing her handbag in response. Jenny picked up her overnight bag as Stephanie slammed the boot lid before locking the car, then followed her toward the grand entrance to Wilderhope Manor.

* * *

A little while later, they were installed in their room. They’d each been handed a “Welcome Pack” by the staff member who had attended to them at Reception, which consisted of their itinerary and instructions for the weekend.

As they unpacked, she voiced one of the thoughts that had run through her head. “Have you ever noticed how places never bat an eye at two girls sharing a room, and yet, if it’s two guys, they automatically assume they’re gay?”

They’ll soon change their tune when they see your outfit for tonight!” Jenny replied, grinning cheekily at her. “It screams ‘lesbian’ with every stitch!”

Whatever do you mean, you saucy wench? Someone with girl parts dressing as a distinguished gentleman does not a lesbian make.”

True, but I wonder what it’ll do to you? Perhaps it’ll work in reverse and turn you straight!”

Full Disclosure

By Lee Benoit (Guest Blogger)

The second week in October includes National Coming Out Day. It’s an international observance despite the name. You can read about the history of NCOD pretty much anywhere, but the Human Rights Campaign has a particularly good description.

Since the earliest days of the gay rights movement, activists like Harvey Milk understood coming out as a political act. Even now, four decades in, the evidence is overwhelming that it’s really, really difficult for a person to remain homophobic when he or she knows a person who is lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or otherwise a member of a sexual minority.

But coming out is a personal act too. Disclosing such a big part of the truth of who you are is scary, even if you’re pretty certain you’ll be received with love and acceptance. It’s worth it, even when the cost is high. I’ve lost friends and I have relatives who don’t bother with my big queer self anymore. But I’ve been honest, and I’ve been brave. I’ve been a person my kids can be proud of (and they are -- you should see them at Pride events!). Coming out is usually worth the effort.

And it is an effort. For most of us, coming out is a process. The process is sometimes full of switchbacks and hairpin turns -- it’s seldom linear or logical. Moreover, the process is never complete. Every time I’m in a new setting or meet new people, especially settings or people I’ll be spending significant time with, I have coming-out decisions to make. In or out? Now or later?

I’m in my mid-forties now, and I started coming out to lovers more than twenty years ago. I was out to my students before I was out to my mom. I wasn’t out to my doctor until one thought to ask. And I wasn’t out at work until I took a tenure-track job in public higher education. Which brings me to another point: sometimes coming out isn’t about the person coming out.

I teach social sciences at an urban community college. Many of my students are LGBT youth (or not-so-youth) whose school and family experiences have been less than supportive. Some of my students are homeless, or living in group homes, or working so many hours in their efforts to remain independent that I have a hard time understanding how they maintain passing grades. More than one of these determined, hard-headed, damaged, brave students have told me that knowing someone like me, having a professor who’s out, makes a difference.

Some of my students (and indeed some of my colleagues) have never met a gay person or a trans person. I’ve run National Coming Out Day events at which more than one person asked, “What is coming out?” and then backed warily away from the information table when I explained. That kind of ignorance hurts my heart, but it’s not always the end of the story. So folks who think LGBT people are strange or wrong or other, I’m out for them too.

Not a lot of people I work with know I write fiction. But to me writing LGBT stories is one more way to be true to myself, and to honor the truths of those who’ve shared their lives and stories with me.

I usually try to mark National Coming Out Day by coming out -- exercising my voice, being visible, presenting my full self -- in a new venue. But I’m pretty well out all over these days, so I’m especially grateful to Lisabet for the invitation to share a guest post here at Beyond Romance.

So here goes: Hi there, Beyond Romance readers. My name is Lee Benoit, and I’m an out, proud bisexual.

Now, readers, do you have any coming out stories to share? Don’t forget, LGBT Allies are often faced with their own coming out dilemmas. I’m all ears!

Many thanks, Lisabet, for inviting me to visit here today! I look forward to continuing the conversation!

Cheers,

Lee xo

About me: Before dawn and after dark, I am a writer of queer fiction, some contemporary, some speculative, some historical. During the daylight hours I am a professor of sociology & anthropology. In the old days, I traveled the world doing field research. Nowadays, I live in the middle of a New England hayfield where being a two-spirit single parent provides more than enough excitement. I also paint watercolors, bake wild-yeast sourdough bread, rear guinea fowl, and share my bed with a pair of cats and an abjectly adoring hound-retriever mutt. Whenever I get itchy feet and miss the world of research and advocacy, I invent a new world in my head and take notes on what happens there.

The highs and lows, exhilaration and challenge of coming out in all its varieties may drive my fiction more than I think. My latest full-length release, SERVANT OF THE SEASONS, (Torquere Press) is the story of a post-apocalyptic world in which an ally loses almost everything in defense of his lesbian employees and then rebuilds his life around the discovery and exploration of his own same-sex attractions. I didn’t set out to write a story in which self-knowledge and self-disclosure were pivotal, but that’s the way it unfolded, and I’m pretty pleased with it!

Here’s a blurb: When architect Mèco is turfed -- ejected from his protected but autocratic Dome -- he finds himself adrift in a dying and dangerous land. With no choice but to scrape his survival from an abandoned farm, he tries to improve his prospects by acquiring an animal to pull his plow. What he ends up with instead are two slaves, a bonded pair of Novigi, a strange people Mèco's never heard of. As the land slowly awakens by their combined efforts, so does Mèco's sense of himself as a man and -- maybe -- a lover. But when their fragile home is threatened by brutal gangs of Salters, Mèco and his friends discover being servants of the seasons may not be enough to protect their new way of living and loving. They must become warriors.

Serpent's Kiss: Excerpt

From the first, Dr. Elena Navarro senses that the wounded man she discovers outside the gates of her rural clinic is not an ordinary mortal. With his chest ripped open, Jorge Pélikal still demonstrates unnatural strength and power.

Elena is irresistibly attracted to Jorge, although he warns her their coupling could open the gates of chaos. She and Jorge fall in love, despite his dire predictions. Gradually Elena comes to understand that Jorge is a supernatural player in a cosmic drama that will determine the fate of the earth and of mankind - and that even if he triumphs in his apocalyptic struggle with his nemesis, she may lose him forever.

"Doctora!" The voice rose out of the darkness - the voice of the man who had vanished that morning from a sealed room, leaving no trace but a brilliant, multi-hued feather. As if conjured by her thoughts, Jorge Pélikal emerged from the shadows. He waited at the foot of the steps, as though requesting her permission to ascend.

He looked far healthier than when she had seen him last. His step was firm and strong, with no indication that he was in pain. His hair cascaded over his shoulders, gleaming in the light of the rising moon. She could not see his face - he was still too distant - but she could smell him. Vanilla and wood-smoke - the same scents that were evoked by the mysterious token she had found under the bed.

He was dressed in rough-woven trousers and a peasant's cotton tunic, all in white.. His skin, in contrast, was a deep cocoa-brown.

Elena's heart rose into her throat. He was beautiful. He was dangerous - she sensed this - not because of what he might do, but because of who he was. But who exactly was he?

"Jorge! Why did you run away?" She gestured for him to join her on the porch. In an instant, he stood in front of her, a half-smile on his full lips.

He grasped her hands. His skin was cool now, and moist like the jungle night. His fever was gone, she thought gratefully. Joy bubbled up in her chest. She almost laughed. She had thought that she would never see him again.

"I had no choice. I was in grave danger. And by remaining in your clinic, I was placing you in danger."

"Moving when your chest has been ripped open and is held together by nothing more than a few feeble stitches wasn't exactly the safest thing to do," she scolded. "But I'm happy to see that you're so much better."

"Much better, thanks to you, Elena." He squeezed her hands. Desire raced through her, sharp, irrational, irresistible. "I'm sorry that I had to return and place you at risk once again. But I left something behind. Something important."

"I know. I have it, hidden safely away."

He searched her face, apparently trying to determine how much she knew about the feather. "Give it to me, then, and I'll leave you in peace."

"No."

"What?"

"No - I don't want you to go. I'll give you the feather, but only if you promise to spend the night with me." Listening to herself, Elena was appalled. What was she saying?

She had not planned this. She was keeping the feather for him and had honestly intended to return it. But now she wanted him, with a single-mindedness that drove out all reason. She would do anything to satisfy this uncharacteristic desire. She could not let him escape again.

He cupped her cheek in one of his strong brown hands. Elena nearly swooned.

"You don't know what you're asking, Elena. It's not possible."

"I know what I want. What I need. And I won't turn over the feather until you give it to me."

He removed his hand, leaving her mourning for his touch. "I could force you." His soft voice rang with power.

"Go ahead and try." Elena's words were defiant, but there were tears in her eyes.

"You don't understand what you ask. If we couple, you and I, we will open the gates of chaos." He hovered close, leaning over her, gazing into her eyes. His scent made her dizzy.

"I don't care. So be it."

His strong arms snaked around her body and pulled her to his chest. "So be it," he whispered. "As the gods will."

His mouth captured hers. He sucked away her breath, drained her of her strength. Then he swept his tongue across hers and everything flowed back - strength, breath, awareness, pleasure. She felt his tongue everywhere, on her aching nipples and in the liquid gap between her thighs, tickling the tender lobe of her ear, dancing in the hollow at the base of her throat. Yet she knew, with the tiny kernel of rationality that remained, that his lips had not left hers. This exquisite ballet of sensation was nothing more than an illusion.

Real or imagined, the fluttering tongues quickly carried her to the edge of release. "Please," she begged, sliding her mouth away from his. "I can't wait. Make love to me." He clutched her to him. His erection pressed into her belly like a lump of stone. "You want me, Jorge. Take me."
