Happy Wednesday!
My hook today comes from my paranormal polyamory novel Fangs, Fur and the Single Girl. I’ve recently been told that love triangles are one of the least popular romance tropes. Oh well... I don’t control the ideas the muse sends me!
This steamy, angsty novel is now available as an audiobook. One of these days I’ll get around to releasing it in print, too.
Meanwhile, if you leave a comment on this post, I will enter you in a drawing for a free copy of the ebook version!
Blurb
A tragically attractive vampire, a hunky wolf-man and a skeptical but susceptible career gal. What could possibly go wrong?
Bianca Sorenson understands obsession. Her phenomenally successful Vamp magazine feeds the popular fascination with the undead. The city is full of fanatics who want to believe vampires are real. Bianca knows that’s a fantasy. Then a blond, blue-eyed blood drinker walks into her office looking for a model’s job and turns her universe upside down. Jim Bush hasn’t been a vampire for long, but his terrible history and seductive hunger undermine Bianca’s single-minded ambition and her cherished self-control.
Trying to escape from Jim’s disturbing influence, she collides with a shaggy giant of a man whose mere presence inspires irresistible lust. When Zack Kane reveals that he’s a wolf shifter and claims Bianca as his mate, she finds herself on the horns of a supernatural dilemma. How can she resolve her feelings for her two mutually hostile lovers while defusing a city-wide conflict between the vampire clique and the werewolf pack?
Fans of Twilight: get ready for a wilder ride than you ever imagined!
The Hook
Please, let Jim be gone, she prayed silently, though she generally considered herself agnostic. One supernatural lover at a time was more than enough for her to manage.
But if there were any gods listening, they chose to ignore her. At the sound of the turning deadbolt, Jim bounded out from the bedroom, nude as when she’d left him.
“Bianca! Where have you been? I was so worried!”
He’d already gathered her into his arms and was nuzzling her hair when he noticed Zack out in the hall. His whole body stiffened, as though he’d been turned to marble. Something pricked her scalp. With a wordless hiss, he thrust her aside and took one step toward the open door, his lips curled back to expose vicious, snake-like fangs.
Zack snarled and sank into a crouch. A violet aura shimmered around his body. His hair whipped around his face as though caught in a hurricane. A beast-shaped shadow loomed behind him.
Sparks crackled up and down Bianca’s arms, stinging like a thousand tiny bees. A near-deafening buzz filled her ears. The air was so thick with menace, she could scarcely breathe. She wanted to run, but icy terror froze her in place. For the first time, she understood the danger she’d courted, letting these creatures into her life.
Jim’s naked form glowed like an opal, lit from within. His eyes were black holes in a skull-like face. All trace of the wholesome college boy had vanished. He looked ancient and implacable as death itself.
Zack was half-way to his wolf-form, still man-sized but covered with fur. His face had lengthened into a snout and saliva dripped from his toothy jaws. Fierce, irrational hate burned in his eyes.
In an instant, she saw, they’d attack one another.
She couldn’t let that happen.
She forced herself to step between them.
“Jim, please!” She spread her arms, palms facing them in the universal gesture of prohibition. “Zack! Calm down, both of you!”
The werewolf snarled and snapped at the air. The vampire reached for her, fingernails extended into razor-sharp claws.
She shrank away, but held her ground.
“This is ridiculous,” she chided. “Stop this right now. I thought you cared about me!”
Closer to human than his opponent, it was Jim spoke first. She could hardly hear him over the din of vibrating power. “Get out of my way! I’m going to finish off that vile thing once and for all.”
“This ‘vile thing’ saved me tonight,” she countered. “While you were moping here in my apartment, Zack fought off two would-be kidnappers.”
“Kidnappers?” The buzz receded into the background, and the otherworldly gleam faded from Jim’s flesh. “Who’d kidnap you, Bianca?”
“I have no idea. Zack cracked open one of their skulls, and tore the other one to shreds, so we might have some trouble finding out.”
“Grrr…”
“And as for you, you stubborn canine—give it up. You can see Jim’s not going to hurt me. Right now we need your human intelligence, not your animal strength.” Bianca held out a hand to the half-shifted giant, coaxing him closer. “Come inside now. You said you wanted to keep me safe, right.”
“Err—right.” Zack’s utterance still held something of a growl.
“Jim’s not my enemy, any more than you are. You’re wasting your time and energy fighting him.”
“But…”
Bianca rested her hands on her hips, trying to broadcast a confidence she definitely didn’t feel. “Look, you’re both here. You both chose to be here. I didn’t ask you. Fine. Be civil to one another or I’ll throw you out once and for all.”

I love her fierce attitude!
I love paranormal polyamory novels.
I hope it isn't true that love triangles are an unpopular trope because two of the books in my romantic comedy series feature love triangles. No fangs or fur though! Really great excerpt, Lisabet. Bianca is a tough cookie!
I just love your descriptions and visceral responses. This is gold: "The air was so thick with menace, she could scarcely breathe. She wanted to run, but icy terror froze her in place."
