The Difference Between Loyalty and Obedience – #SciFi #SpaceOpera #NewRelease

One of the themes that repeatedly appears in my writing is the difference between loyalty and obedience.

At first glance, they look similar. Both involve cooperation. Both involve trust. Both can create strong relationships.

But they come from very different places.

Obedience is often rooted in authority. Someone follows because they are expected to. Because rules exist. Because consequences exist.

Loyalty is different. It’s voluntary.

It can’t be demanded, assigned or guaranteed by position, title, or power. A person must choose it.

I find that distinction fascinating because it creates such rich character relationships. Characters who obey might voluntarily comply. Characters who are loyal stay when it would be easier to leave.

Some stories focus on acquiring power. I'm more interested in what happens after power stops working. What remains when authority disappears? What keeps people together when there is no requirement to stay? When no outside force or influence binds you?

Those questions reveal character in ways that command never can.

In the Bringer of Chaos series, the strongest bonds emerge when Pietas discovers that loyalty earned freely is far more valuable than obedience obtained through force.

That's one of the central lessons explored throughout the series. The immortal ruler gradually learns the difference between those who simply do what they’re told, and those who, no matter how difficult the road, choose to remain at his side.

Through a novella and three novels, these characters change from enemies desperate for survival to friends who trust the other has his back. How that happens, and why, carries the entire story.
