Rough Weather cover

I just released the second book in my paranormal romance series Elemental Passions. So I thought I’d share an exclusive excerpt for today’s Book Hooks hop.

Want to read it for free? Leave me a comment with your email. I’m giving away two copies to randomly chosen visitors.

Furthermore, to introduce you to the series, I’ve dropped the price of the first book, Hot Spell, to only 99 cents. Get it while it’s – um – hot!

Destiny hides in the tempest’s heart

A fated encounter. A familiar stranger. A storm of passion. Can Ondine release her fear, surrender to Marut’s power, and claim her own?

Marine biologist Ondine Ambrose has always felt at home in the sea. Orphaned at birth and raised by her grandmother on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, she has never really questioned her extraordinary affinity for the watery world.

When she encounters an attractive but arrogant engineer on her private beach, surveying the site for a prospective off-shore wind farm, anger is her first reaction. A casual touch, however, transforms that emotion to incomprehensible, irresistible, terrifying lust.

Ebony-skinned Marut has his own talents—aside from his uncanny ability to swamp Ondine with desire. He can control the winds and summon storms. When he insists that they are both more than human, and that she is his destined mate, Ondine responds with skepticism. She tries to resist the charismatic Haitian, but ultimately she cannot deny the evidence of her senses—and her heart.

The Hook

Ondine sat back from the computer, massaging her aching temples. None of this constituted proof, of course. Cultures frequently borrowed myths from one another, transforming them to fit into their own belief system. Still, the consensus was impressive. Furthermore, her grandmother’s obvious concern with this particular legend suggested that it had personal relevance.

He would know—Marut, the engineer. Marut, who so obviously fit the traditional description of ebony-skinned Martewecane.

The slip of paper lay on the table where he’d left it, anchored by the sugar bowl. Swallowing her nervousness, she fished out her phone and entered the number.

Hello. Marut speaking.” His lilting tones were warm as Caribbean sun.

Ah…hello. This is Ondine.”

I’ve been waiting for you to call.”

Really? You’re awfully sure of yourself.”

Not of myself, pitit—of us. I knew it was only a matter of time before you began to understand.”

I don’t understand! Not anything at all!” She hated the edge of panic she heard in her own voice. “I… We need to talk, Marut.”

You’ve been doing some research, am I right? About yourself and your powers. You know now what you are. What we are.”

Yes. No. Oh, I don’t know. I’ve found the stories, the legends, yes. But they can’t be true. Can they?”

Do you have another explanation?”

Ondine couldn’t think of a reply. Closing her eyes, she imagined herself floating upon the night sea, bathed in silvery moonlight. The water buoyed her up, soothed her, washed away every pain and fear.

You need me, sweet. Let me come and comfort you.” The concern in his voice was real, but she heard the lust too, simmering under the surface.

Given the effect you have on me, I don’t think ‘comfort’ is the right term.”

I won’t touch you, I swear, not unless you ask me to.”

That’s the problem. I’m afraid I won’t be able to resist asking…”

And why is that a problem, Ondine? Even if you don’t believe the legends? I’d never hurt you. All I want is to give you pleasure, if you’ll just let me.”
