Overcoming Writer’s Block  (#pnr #guestblog @katehillromance)

By Kate Hill (Guest Blogger)

It’s a great feeling when you’re working on a book and everything is flowing well. The characters are talking to you and to each other and the actual story is following the outline—or at least following it closely enough that you don’t need to rework major areas. Then something happens. Dialogue gets stilted and you realize the scene you’re working on doesn’t make sense. You have to fix the problem and get back on track. At times that’s easier said than done.

It’s inevitable that a writer will eventually experience some form of writer’s block. Sometimes it’s a shortage of ideas and other times it’s the inability to express ideas. I’d like to share my three favorite ways to overcome writer’s block and if you’d like, please share your favorites in the comments. It’s always good to know what helps someone else because it could be the nudge you need to push through your bout of writer’s block.

Method #1: Go for a walk or a run. Maybe it’s the fresh air or the change of scenery, but when I go for a walk or a run I almost always get a flow of writing ideas. I also feel better and more focused when I exercise. Feeling invigorated helps my creativity.

Method #2: Take a shower. I don’t know why, but I always get my best ideas in the shower. This method in particular helps me if I’m stuck on a scene. Sometimes when I’m sitting at the keyboard trying to write a tricky scene, nothing makes sense. As soon as I step under a warm flow of water in the shower, the scene magically plays in my mind and the problem is solved. The biggest issue with this method is trying to remember the details because I can’t type in the shower.

Method #3: Write something else. Sometimes the best way to overcome writer’s block is to put aside the story I’m working on and write another, even if it’s a piece of fan fiction that no one will ever read, except me. Working on something unrelated gets my creativity flowing. Once I’ve spent some time relaxing by writing a no-pressure story, I can return to my current work in progress with fresh enthusiasm. An added benefit to this method is the story you work on to help with your writer’s block might turn out to be one you pursue and the start of a new series.

These three methods have helped me overcome writer’s block. While working on my latest release, Captain’s Mercy, I used all three. My hero, Jonah, could be troublesome. He wasn’t the easiest man to deal with, for me and for the other characters in the book. It took quite a few jogs and showers to work out the details of his story. It was a lot of fun, though, and I hope readers enjoy his book as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Happy reading and happy writing!

Blurb:

Mercy Brown's life changes when she accepts a position as companion to the disabled sister of wealthy shipyard owner Jonah Barnes. She is instantly attracted to the rugged former sea captain, even if his brusque manner offends her. Mercy soon finds herself entangled in the quirky family's secrets.

From the first, Mercy is troubled by prowlers, disturbances from the attic, and unearthly howls on the property. After meeting several unusual household members, including a groundskeeper who works by night and the mischievous Maxwell Barnes, Mercy realizes she should flee while she can.

Pages from Mercy's first novel go missing and Jonah's domineering personality causes tension in the house. Only Mercy's fondness for her young companion, Faith Barnes, as well as her fascination with Jonah prevent her from leaving, but will her desire for him endanger her life?

Excerpt from Captain's Mercy

On their way downstairs, she asked, "What were you doing in the attic? I thought I heard howling up there a short time ago and then a crash."

"The wind, I'm sure. No doubt the crash you heard was Michaels. He tripped over an old trunk. He's up there now, making repairs on a window that was blown open by the storm. He's also trying to get rid of more unwanted guests of the flying rodent variety, so I remind you to stay away from the attic."

"Why do you suppose the pests keep coming back?"

"I'm not sure. My expertise is the sea. Ask me about whales and sharks and I could probably answer. Bats are another story."

"Do you still go to sea?" she asked, eager to keep her mind off the storm.

"Not as much as I used to."

"Do you miss it?"

"At times. I miss the straightforwardness of being at sea. The simplicity. Aboard ship, a man is valued more for what he knows than for his bloodlines."

"You don't have much use for polite society, do you?"

"As long as rich men keep buying my ships, I like it well enough."

"Is that why you partnered with Max?"

"Partly. Max is intelligent and good at business. He knows how to mingle with those kinds of people and put them at ease so they'll make the best deal."

"I see. The business world is all about using people."

"Precisely."

"It sounds very cutthroat and lonely to me."

"Maybe, but playing the game is better than being poor, isn't it? I know. I've been on that side of it too. Faith and Max don't remember like I do. They were young when we could barely make ends meet."

They had reached the library and he gestured for her to sit on the couch. He joined her, but kept a respectable distance.

"So you went to sea to take care of them. Do you ever regret it?"

"Not for an instant. There's nothing I wouldn't do for them. My only regret is what happened to Robert." Pain glistened in his dark eyes, taking her aback. He always seemed so strong, even cold at times. He rarely displayed any vulnerability.

Strangely, she wished to comfort him.

"I'm sure what happened to him was quite beyond your control."

"That's not the only thing, it seems." He stared deeply into her eyes and edged closer--so near that they almost touched.

"Mr. Barnes, please." She had intended the words to sound like a warning. Instead they came out like a plea.

At the next clap of thunder, she instinctively jumped and flung her arms around him. He held her snugly and while she knew she should pull away, she didn't want to. She felt safe and secure in his embrace, but it was more than that. The feel of his body, his heart beating against her cheek and his divinely masculine scent aroused her in a way she couldn't deny.

"Mercy," he murmured. When he covered her mouth in a possessive kiss, she didn't even try to stop him, but surrendered, just like Macie to Captain Bristle.

I'm part of Werewolf Week! (#werewolf #interview #eroticromance)

Kate Hill has been hosting a massive celebration of wolf shifters over at her blog Compelling Beasts. She invited my werewolf from Rajasthani Moon to come by and answer here questions. You'll find the interview, plus a thrilling excerpt featuring a werewolf attack, here:

She wouldn't let me post a picture of Pratan. Here's how I imagine him.

Wouldn't you fall in love with this guy?

The excerpt at Kate's focuses on shape shifting. If you're looking for something sexier, try this one...

Pratan lifted her off the horse. She cringed at the nasty slurping sound as her pussy and rear hole released the twin dildos. Both orifices felt loose and raw. Her shoulders and thighs ached from the strain of fighting off orgasms.

Cradling her in his arms, the bandit carried her to a low divan near one wall and laid her gently on the silken cushions. Despite the soft fabric, the stripes on her back flared into fresh anguish.

Thank you.” Her voice was hoarse and strange to her ears. “I don’t think I could have borne any more.”

What makes you think we’re finished?” he asked with a devilish grin. Nevertheless his touch was tender as he brushed her tangled hair off her forehead. Kneeling beside the couch, he turned her face to his.

Those eyes again. The eyes of a madman—a beast—a god. She wanted to look away, but his gaze held her fast, searching her mind, or so it seemed. An awful temptation seized her. She would tell him everything—about the parchment, about her mission… Perhaps then he would be merciful and let her rest.

Before she could act on the impulse, though, he leaned in to claim a kiss. Automatically, despite her sore muscles, she reached up to encircle him with her arms. His firm lips sealed hers, capturing her moans of new pleasure. Her battered cunny wept with new need. As he plundered her mouth like the brigand he was, Cecily could do nothing but surrender.

He tasted of spices, the remnants of their lavish repast. Hot musk rose from his sweat-slicked skin. She felt his knotted muscles bunch and twist under her fingers as he straddled her prone form, their mouths still locked. His rigid member prodded her pubis. Despite her exhaustion and pain, she wanted him. Arching her back, she struggled to align her cleft with his teasing cock. Her stretched quim had never felt so empty.

Pratan broke the kiss, chuckling. Now he gripped her wrists in his huge hands, trapping her against the upholstery. “I thought you’d had enough!”

Taking Your Dream Out Of The Trunk (#romance #guestblogger #dreams)

By Joyce Holmes (Guest Blogger)

That girl in English class, the one who started on her essay or reading assignment the day it was handed out? Yeah, that was me. A camera was never far from my fingertips either, and anyone walking the school halls was fair game to having their photo snapped for the yearbook. I had grand dreams of becoming a photojournalist. Then my parents moved a few days after my graduation, and at seventeen I was on my own, and all dreams were put on hold. I bounced around from place to place for a couple of years, married young, had three beautiful boys. "Me" became replaced with "Mom". For twenty-some years, I immersed myself in raising my kids. Nothing was more important. I still took photos, I still read whenever I could steal a moment, but writing not only took a backseat, it got shoved, huddled and neglected, in the trunk.

As my boys got older and became involved in sports, I started submitting write-ups of their games to the local paper and they always got printed. That small success fueled the fire kept on slow simmer for too many years. On my fortieth birthday, I sat myself down, as people tend to do, and asked what did I still want to achieve for "me"? I wanted to write a book. So I did. And it was terribly bad. But such an enjoyable experience. And the bug had bitten. I wrote another one, then another and another… I took classes, attended conferences, joined writing groups, and I began getting "good" rejection letters.

(I know, right? Total oxymoron.)

About that time, my life shifted gears again. With my children at an age where they no longer needed constant attention, my hubby and I began to travel. I found an entire world out there to explore and photograph, and digital photography made it so easy and fun. I stopped writing halfway through a story—just completely stopped writing. But if you have a true passion for something, it won't be denied. It took a few years, but I gradually found my way back to writing. I still haven't finished that abandoned story, but I will. Another of my stories called to me first. I edited it, brought it into the twenty-first century (my, how the world has changed in those few brief years), submitted it and, yay, it got published. Since then I’ve published three more books, and my most recent, Visual Effects, just came out this month.

I confess to being partial to wounded characters. I enjoy reading about them, and most of my stories feature them. Besides English, two of my favorite classes in school were Sociology and Psychology, and I blame my fascination with the human psyche for this compulsion to torment my characters.

Poor Drey Winston, my female character in Visual Effects, already carried a fair bit of baggage at the start of the story, but that didn’t stop me from putting her through the emotional wringer as the story progressed. I went a little lighter on Jesse Devlin. Just a little, though. When someone is handsome, talented and charming, I found it interesting to see how he’d handle adversity, so I threw some stuff at him along the way.

This is their story.

Drey Winston is a fierce competitor who enjoys challenging her mind and body. But when it comes to her heart—no one ever gets close enough to compete for it. Having grown up believing she was an unwanted burden to her parents, she prefers to keep her feelings well hidden. Just when her hard-fought goals are finally within reach, the audacious Jesse Devlin comes along to breach her carefully guarded defenses.

After a disastrous marriage early in life, Jesse Devlin prefers strings-free relationships. Confident and outgoing, he gets along well with women, but his natural charm can’t seem to penetrate Drey Winston’s aloofness. While attempting to win her over, he’s the one who ends up losing his heart.

Can this commitment-phobic bachelor convince the stubbornly independent woman he loves that his feelings—and hers—are the real deal?

Excerpt

Jesse leaned against a tree to draw in a few deep breaths. As he straightened, he plucked his ball cap off his head and wiped his forearm across his brow, then hooted a victory cheer. “Hard work’s over. Time for the reward.”

He dropped the cap onto the sand and emptied his pockets into it. Then he pulled his T-shirt over muscled shoulders, dropped it onto the sand on top of his cap, and made quick work of his footwear. Drey stared in disbelief as he beelined down the beach and ran straight into the low surf. When he was hip-deep in the water, he slipped smoothly beneath the surface. He reappeared several feet out and turned to wave.

Join me,” he called. “The water’s great.”

Not a chance. The ocean is cold in summer, I can only imagine how frigid it must be today.”

Wuss,” he scoffed and splashed water in her direction.

Shivers that had nothing to do with feeling chilly shot through Drey as she watched him emerge from the water a few minutes later. Rivulets ran down his chest, following the ridges and planes of his brawny body. Wet shorts clung to muscular thighs.

He ran his hands over his face and then shook himself like a playful pup. “You don’t know what you missed. Nothing like a dip in the salt chuck to get the heart pumping. Well, almost nothing.” He stalked deliberately up the beach toward her, and the look on his face made her back away, but she didn’t react fast enough. He caught her up in his arms, laughing at her shrieks of protest.

Lemme go, Jesse. You’re cold. Come on, Jesse, lemme go. You’re getting me all wet.”

That’s the whole idea. Get you wet and me warm.”

She gave him a firm push in the wrong direction as she sprinted down the beach. “Not if you can’t catch me,” she threw over her shoulder as she went.

I've learned a few things along the path to this place I now find myself. I've learned life is all about striking a balance. You don't necessarily have to give up one thing to enjoy another. And never give up on a dream, even if it has to ride in the trunk for a while first.

Review Tuesday: Gotta Have It edited by Rachel Kramer Bussell (#flashfiction #erotica #review)

Gotta Have It: 69 Stories of Sudden Sex
Edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel
Cleis, 2011

"He was already two knuckles deep into my cunt, so asking for his name was kind of pointless."

Thus begins Kathleen Bradean's wonderful contribution to Gotta Have It, entitled "A Good Stiff One". I start my review with Ms. Bradean's story not only because it's one of my favorites, but also because it captures the essence of Rachel Kramer Bussel's new collection of flash fiction - stories that turn on the heat from the very first sentence. The subtitle of this book is definitely appropriate. With no more than 1200 words available, these stories tend to race into the clinches, leaving both the characters and the reader a bit breathless.

The best tales in Gotta Have It , however, are more than just fast and furious sex scenes. I was extremely impressed by the depth and originality some of these authors managed to pack into a small package. Ms. Bradean's story is a case in point. It captures all the awkwardness, the inwardness, of fucking a stranger at a party - the lack of emotional connection even as you're being propelled into the sensual stratosphere, the judgments one can't help oneself from making.

Consider Carmel Lockyer's lesbian lust-fest, "Pink Satin Organza". "Here's the problem; Sonya isn't even my friend," the narrator begins, guilt-tripped into acting as a bridesmaid for her sister's best friend. The bride's stern aunt provides some rough consolation, though. By the middle of the tale, "Her red lipstick is being equally shared between her mouth and mine". The characters in this story could easily sustain a much longer piece. I'd love to see the narrator and the aunt at the next "fitting".

Gotta Have It offers considerable variety in orientation, kink, mood and even explicitness. There's the high octane collision between two women on the leather seats of a vintage Corvette in Evan Mora's "My Femme", the improbable but irresistible M/M butt-fuck at 35,000 feet in Mike Bruno's "The Copilot", the deserved punishment of the deliberately clumsy waiter in Sommer Marsden's "Laugh", and the unabashedly naughty exhibitionist in Jeremy Edwards' "No Blame, No Shame" ("Even the hum of the ice machine sounds libidinous.") Shanna Germain offers up an ironic woman Bible teacher in "Genesis" ("I don't hunt them down. They come to me."). D.L. King serves up a sizzling version of the stern librarian fantasy in "Punishment Befitting the Crime". In "Intersect", Burton Lawrence gives us a zero-G liaison between two space freighter captains that's constrained by physics to no more than seventeen minutes. "After Ten Years" by Christen Clifford masterfully conveys the complex joys and disappointments of sex after a decade of marriage. And Salome Wilde wins hands-down in the category of originality (or possibly bizarreness) with "Too Wondrous To Measure", about the love affair between a human woman and Godzilla. (I'm not kidding!)

Of course, given who I am, I was particularly drawn to some of the BDSM-themed stories. Mike Kimera's chilling "Need-Leash" manages to be arousing and disturbing with no actual sex at all. "My nipples stretch the silk the way my desire for you stretches my morals," says the nameless female narrator, only too aware of her own abasement. "Over His Shoulder" by Maximilian Lagos is a more light-hearted tale about the erotic power of the written word. Teresa Noelle Roberts' story, "Laughter in Hell", highlights the paradoxes in a power-exchange relationship. ("My cane still makes her wet and her laughter still makes me hard." Possibly my favorite BDSM tale was Valerie Alexander's "Don't Struggle", which gives us a peak into the thoughts of a manipulative but appreciative Dom. The insights in this story will stay with me. (I read it at least four times.)

Of course, with sixty nine stories, I can't begin to mention all the stories I enjoyed. This is a huge book - over three hundred fifty pages. Overall, Ms. Bussel has done a great job assembling work by both familiar and new authors. Having edited anthologies myself, I'm in awe of the amount of effort that must have been required, managing communications with sixty eight contributors. (The collection includes one of the editor's own stories as well.)

The depth and breadth of Gotta Have It means that there will be something here for every reader. If you're in the mood for a quickie, I highly recommend this book.

Sports Car Sex. (@josie_jax. #MMF #LGBT)

By Josie Jax (Guest Blogger)

What’s your hottest car-sex moment? I’m sure most of us have been there…in a cramped back seat with a lover, twisting like a pretzel, and making the most of every inch of car space.

As an author of erotic romances for over twelve years, I’ve written countless lovemaking scenes from vanilla missionary to…how shall I say…creative, sometimes acrobatic scenes.

During the editing process for authors, we go through first or second rounds, line editing, proofing, and so on. When my book was in the proofing stage, the proofer commented on Twitter about the first in my Tropical Duet series with Loose Id (Kabana Wild—book 1, now available; and Jamaica Wild—book 2, coming April 5). The proofer’s tweets:

OMgawd hyena laff while proofing Kabana Wild

And:

I will never look at a sports car in the same way again

There is a lot more #hotsex that follows the below scene in the book (and in the book as a whole), but heres a snippet of the sports-car lovemaking chapter to get your engine revving. ;) Now get mine revvingshare your hottest car-sex stories!

P.S. Jamaica Wild: Tropical Duet 2 by Josie Jax releases April 5, 2016.

Kabana Wild: Tropical Duet 1

Three people...three depraved plans...one inferno of scandalous pleasures.

Movie star Mitch Wulfrum is tired of deflecting the gay rumors buzzing around him. It's time for drastic measures to suppress them once and for all--even if it means marriage in name only to the first trophy wife he can get his hands on. And beautiful sugar-cane princess Kiona 'Alohi fits right into his plan.

Kiona can't believe her luck when she's presented with Mitch's proposition. Her overbearing father is dangling her trust fund over her head as an enticement to dump her oh-so-sexy, but oh-so-unsuitable lover, Nakolo. A bogus marriage to Mitch will net her everything she wants--money and love, even if she can only have Kol on the sly.

What she doesn't expect are the sexual sparks that fly between her and Mitch, or, when Kol catches them together, the heat that flares between the two men. One scandalously pleasurable encounter after another fans the flames of attraction, until they begin to dream that all three of them could have everything they ever wanted--and more than they ever expected.

An intricate, fragile web of lies and deceit are all that keep their wanton secrets from erupting into the public eye. Trouble is, one scheming photographer named Anjelee has already clicked the shutter that could ruin all their lives.

Excerpt

He thirsted for her as always, but how to get his final fill of her in this cramped little sports car?

Nakolo, the sunroof It was as if Pele whispered the solution in his ear.

Stand up,” he ordered.

S-stand up?”

You heard me. Stand up. Remove your shoes, plant a foot on each seat, and stand up so your top half is through the sunroof.”

Her mouth fell open, and a sound that resembled a wheeze tore from her throat. He watched as she blinked, scanned the inside of the car, and looked up through the sunroof. Nakolo knew the precise moment understanding dawned on her.

For a full thirty seconds, she stared deep into his eyes, her own tearing up. She finally understood his desperation and intense desire to have her, to reclaim what was his after seeing her with another man.

Kiona twisted, assuring the car remained in park, and removed her shoes. She reached for the sunroof’s edge and pulled herself to a standing position. She was a tall woman, and it was a small car, so with her feet placed as wide as she could get them on each front seat, the roof came to waist level.

She set her elbows and forearms on the roof and leaned on them. “I’m ready,” she whispered down to him.

He scooted forward and drew up her dress, stuffing the front hem beneath the garment’s waistband. And there it was, her jewel—his jewel. Nakolo’s mouth watered, and his balls throbbed, engorging like a balloon ready to pop.

Hemolele! Mmm, my love, you are so gorgeous, so”—he swiped his tongue up her slit, eliciting a scream from her—“delicious.”

The flavor of cream and faint salt burst in his mouth. Holy islands, she was wetter than the sea. He drew back and studied her toned thighs and the top of the V they held dear. Except for a small patch of dark curls above her clit, she always kept her pussy shaved for him so he could feel her silky lips on his tongue or encircling his shaft. The labia were smooth and naturally tanned, her nub pink and swollen, emerging at the top of her cleft like the early bloom of a hibiscus. God, what perfection!

Nakolo couldn’t delay any longer. He wrapped his arms around her hips and reached behind her. Sinking one finger into her dripping-wet puka, he closed his mouth over her swollen bud.

She screamed again, this time far louder. He heard her hands slap the roof and rejoiced when her voluptuous body spasmed in his arms, against his face. He flicked his tongue over her clitoris while gazing upward through the sunroof. She was like a siren of the sea. He watched as the Pacific winds blew inland, tossing her hair in a wild mass, her breasts perky mounds, her face contorted in ecstasy.

Her pelvis did a swiveling dance, abrading over his face. She growled, reaching for that pinnacle that always came so easily for her. Nakolo pumped his finger faster, adding another, then a third. She spread wider, accommodating him, coating his fingers with her stickiness. With his tongue, he thoroughly explored every fold, crease, and little bulge, knowing the time would come very soon when he would have to yank her down into the car and plunge himself into her.

She was almost there, he could tell by the stiffening of her dance and the animal mewls escaping from deep in her throat. But somewhere in the sexual blur of his mind, Nakolo heard the hum of a car engine. He whipped his head around to see a sleek Mercedes pull up behind Kiona’s car.

Goddamn it,” he swore when he saw none other than Mitch Wulfrum—the damn movie star—unfold himself from the driver’s seat and stride toward Kiona’s car.

Kiona’s windows were darkly tinted, so most likely Mitch couldn’t see Nakolo. If Mitch had spied Nakolo’s truck back at Jager’s house, he’d probably know Nakolo sat in her car. But if he hadn’t peered out the window at Nakolo’s boyish antics, Mitch wouldn’t know whose truck it was and might assume Kiona was alone and the truck abandoned.

Not knowing one way or the other added an edge of excitement to the unexpected situation. Nakolo’s loins simmered with reluctant fire. Did he want to be discovered or not?

As Mitch approached the driver’s side, Nakolo studied the strikingly handsome face, the tall, lean body…and the bulge in the jeans Mitch now wore. Nakolo swore under his breath. Why was it he found the sight of this man sauntering nearer so very arousing while Kol orally pleasured Kiona? Where had his anger gone? And why hadn’t he demanded an explanation from Kiona about her tryst with this man before Kol had dived right into satisfying his sexual urges?

Mitch, what are you—what are you doing here?” Kol heard Kiona choke out.
