First Kisses

By Angela Smith (Guest Blogger)

I love love. I believe in love. I love watching people fall in love and fight falling in love because it just doesn’t figure into their immediate plans, or they’ve been hurt before and don’t want to take that risk again. Most importantly, I love that love can last forever, as I am living proof and some members of my family are living proof.

What’s my favorite part of romance novels? You know … that first kiss. And I love watching that first kiss on the big screen after the building chemistry finally erupts. So I thought it’d be fun to talk about my all-time favorite movie kisses.

Spiderman. Hello? A kiss while hanging upside down? She removes his mask from his lips just enough to kiss him. And Peter Parker is kissing her, but she only thinks she’s kissing Spiderman. I find it intriguing that she isn’t tempted to just remove the mask and find out who he is, but I guess it’s the mystery of not knowing that keeps her from doing so.

And I can’t leave out The Amazing Spiderman. It’s probably even better how he grabs her and twirls her around with his web then tells her to shut up because all he can think about is his mouth on hers.

Top Gun! Okay, maybe her driving is a little reckless and if anyone actually did that in real life, it might not end too well, so I don’t recommend actually doing it. But how could you not fall in love with that first kiss?

The Notebook. Probably one of the most romantic stories ever. And the most romantic love scene. Enough said.

One that I can definitely watch over and over again is Crazy Stupid Love. How Hannah goes in the bar to find Jacob and … wow. The music, the setting, the scene, everything about that first kiss is sexy.

It might not be a kiss, but it’s a look. You know that special look that every woman craves, whether they like romance or not. The Parent Trap has a great first look, when Nick sees Elizabeth (when he sees her for the first time when he’s in the elevator and goes looking for her later) and actually falls into the swimming pool when he’s trying to get to her.

And ahh … Noah and Allie. Who makes a better couple? First, when Noah gets up on the Ferris wheel to get Allie to pay attention to him. And later, when Allie comes back to that special house and yes, he gives her that look.

Ok, so now I’ll mention Jacob and Bella in Twilight. That first curious look was kind of adorable, and definitely memorable.

Moments like these are what inspire me to write romance. Sometimes when I’m feeling particularly uncreative, I’ll watch movies to get my romantic groove back. Of course, I love reading romance, but it’s nice to watch and not have to think too hard.

So tell me: what is your favorite kiss moment? Leave a comment with your email address and I will enter you into a drawing to win Final Mend, which is the third and final book in my series.

Burn on the Western Slope is the first and for a limited time, that book is part of a 10-book romantic suspense bundle, called Racing Hearts: 10 thrilling suspense novels. These ten ebooks for only $.99 offer us ten first-kisses. Here’s an excerpt of the first kiss between Garret and Reagan in my novel, Burn on the Western Slope:

She glanced at him, then moved her gaze to the canyon. “Oh my God, look!” She dropped the thermos and grasped his arm, pointing in the direction of an elk. The animal glanced up, stared at them, and slowly wandered away. “How beautiful.”

Things couldn’t have gone more perfect if he’d been trying to seduce her. Which he wasn’t, exactly. “Yes, it is,” he said, studying her. The way her hair wisped out of her cap and curled the rest of the way down her shoulders, the way her eyes lit up with the beauty of the earth. He stroked a strand of her hair and brought it to his lips. “I’ve never seen anything more beautiful.”

She turned to him, her lips red and eyes dark. He cupped the back of her neck with his hand and claimed her mouth, tasting chocolate and mint. His stomach coiled in longing and pain as the silk of her tongue twined with his. He wanted her in his bed. Or her bed. Or any bed. Or right here in the snow. Hell, he didn’t care as long as he had her, and the sooner the better, before he had to take matters into his own hands, quite literally.

About Me

During my senior year in high school, I was dubbed most likely to write a novel because I always had my nose stuck in a book. Writing has been my dream ever since my mother read Brer Rabbit to my sister and me so often that we were able to recite it back to each other before actually learning to read.

I love reading about the adventure of love, and getting involved in the legal field developed my love of suspense. I believe the whole act of love is a mystery that most people have trouble resolving. In real life, there are many barriers to love. Falling in love, staying in love, building trust, blending families, and many other emotional walls we erect that might keep us from totally connecting.

Love always seems to have some type of mystery to weed through in order to get to the good stuff. I enjoy using these barriers in fiction and creating barriers for my characters to break through and discover love while learning something about themselves in the process.
While I don’t expect we’ll ever solve the mystery of love, I hope my novels will offer you entertainment while my characters fight to solve their love’s mystery.

Hi Angela,
Great post about that wonderful first kiss. My hand's down best kiss---and I keep the DVR tuned to it when I need inspiration in my own writing---is in The Lake House with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. I love the scene in the garden when Alex and Kate share their first dance which leads to that first kiss. The music, the way they look at each other----everything about that scene just grabs me.

A warm welcome to you, Angela! Sorry I couldn't visit earlier to say hello.

Looks like you've hooked my readers, though.

As for me, my favorite first kiss may well be the first time my husband and I kissed. We'd just finished dinner and we were out on the sidewalk, on a busy Boston street. Let me just say that he was a "full-body" kisser. Kind of took my breath away. I totally forgot we were in a public place!

The first time my husband kissed me, he had only met me twice and had come to a party at my house. Most of the guests had left and we were in the kitchen. He grabbed me forcefully, saying, "This probably won't ever work..." and kissed me. We made so much noise in my room that night that my brother and his friends had to keep turning the stereo up louder and louder! We've been married 30 years and have 4 kids. I guess it did work.

That kind of magic is what makes me keep writing romance. I'm living it, so I know it's real, if elusive.

But I have to add that anything with Keanu Reeves in it is a must-see for me. My family teases me because they usually dislike his movies. But I can't help that I think he's SOOO sexy! I even based one of my heroes on him, though I "disguised" him enough that only I know who he is! I even liked the 3rd Matrix movie, because seeing Keanu's naked butt was enough to satisfy me, despite the lack of plot and terrible execution. Sigh...

Congratulations on 30 years Fiona! And wow, that's a nice kiss. No wonder you write romance. You too, Lisabet. A great first kiss! And yes, there is something about Keanu...

The winner of Final Mend is bn100! This is the 3rd and final book in my standalone series. Thanks for stopping by, and I'll be in touch.
